MATERIAL PLANNING: Material is imported or locally purchased in small quantities so that the capital is not blocked. GEOFMAN do not manufacture raw material by itself. They basically mix all the ingredients (raw materials) and make their products. DRUG PHARMA is their sister concern company which produces raw material and it also provides the raw material to GEOFMAN. In total there are only 5-6 companies in Pakistan who produce basic raw material by themselves. PHARMAGIN in Frontier is also one of them. Material is required according to the production planning therefore it should reach before production and the material planning is based on requirement and urgency. Then comes capacity and then the availability of materials. MRP system is used. PRODUCTION PLANNING STRATEGY Push System. Used in all types of production, but more benefits obtained in job shops. ROUGH CUT CAPACITY Production planning is made according to the budgeted requirements of market. In general every company prepares short term and long term budget i.e. the annual budget broken into months. According to monthly requirements, the order is being placed for the procurement of material. Lead period depends on the nature of material. They have to keep in mind the lead time before placing the order. Normally they have one shift per day i.e. 8 working hours but in case of emergencies i.e. floods, earthquakes etc they have 3 shifts per day.

PROCUREMENT Geofman Pharma does purchasing for local purchases and the other one is for imports. The procurement is done in two categories: General Purchases Raw material Purchases

GENERAL PURCHASES: General Purchases include routine items such as stationery, office equipments, transportations and other minor items which are not directly related with production activities. RAW MATERIAL PURCHASES: This includes each and every raw material that is required to make finished products. For local and imported material a company has to select the reliable suppliers. The main 3 factors for the reliability are consistent quality, cost/price, and delivery at fixed time. For local material the lead time is short and for the imported material lead time is longer at least 2-3 months. So the company has to place the order accordingly. Moreover, they have to select at least 2-3 suppliers for the material.

Branding: The importer can ask for their own brand name/ packaging pattern etc for a specific generic mentioned in our product list, Selected in accordance to the psychology and demographic values of the importing country. 3RD PARTY LOGISTICS A bid sheet is a low cost effective sheet in which there are quotations form different suppliers and on the bases of that low cost suppliers are selected comparing their LANDED COST. Then after getting the bid sheet orders are finalized and there is a request for an indenter. After the request of an indenter the bid sheet along with the approved indenter is send for approval to the finance department. They dont have direct suppliers. One of the indenter they consult is IRIS company. Indirect Distribution is all about distributing through appointed distributors, Here, the concept of Third-party logistics (3PL) comes into play.

An indenter is a local supplier or the middle party, we also call them as an agent who gives information to the manufacturer and tells then to arrange the material. MANUFACTURING:
The production or manufacturing starts after warehousing and checking of raw materials. Material is released after checking until that it is kept in Quarantine. GEOFMAN has a semi automatic process. It means half of the work is done by machine sand half of the work is done manually. There are different steps in manufacturing of pharmaceutical products. For e.g. granulation process which generally takes 1 day to complete. In Filling process 10,000 bottles are filled in 1 shift i.e. 8 hours.

WARE HOUSING FINISHED GOODS WAREHOUSES (WAREHOUSING): After manufacturing and released by quality control department, the products are transferred to finished goods warehouses. The finished goods warehouse dispatches it to different distributors, chemists, hospitals, govt. institutions and armed forces according to the requirements. CAPACITY OF WAREHOUSES: GEOFMAN has 3 warehouses: 1. raw material warehouse. 2. packaging warehouse. 3. finished goods warehouse. RAW MATERIAL AND PACKAGING WAREHOUSE: It covers an area of almost 2000 sq. yards. They have the racking system in raw material and packaging warehouse so that the material inventory can be kept properly and systematically. FINISHED GOODS WAREHOUSE: It covers an area of almost 5000 sq. yards. Finished goods warehouse has the capacity to keep the stock of almost 1-1.5 months. They dont have any racking system in their finished goods warehouse and the finished goods are kept on palates on the platform.

Basically its a local company but it imports and exports outside internationally also. There are some recommendations, we give to GEOFMAN PHARMACEUTICAL COMPANY are: 1. There is no proper supply chain management system or any separate department which handles the distribution of products. They do the logistics service themselves. Now a days, the strong supply chain system is very important for achieving the leading position in the market. Its necessary to develop and maintain the supply chain management system as it brings the upgradation in the performance of the company. 2. GEOFMAN PHARMACEUTICAL faces a major problem i.e. even if the prices of raw material increases, the company is not allowed to increase the price of their finished products because the products are registered with the Ministry of Health, Pakistan and it does not allow the company to increase the price of the registered product, so the company has to bear the financial loss. So for that reason they should build up a suitable communication network with the Ministry of Health, Pakistan.
