I/ INTRODUCTION
1.1What is managing inIormation systems (MIS)

ollowing S.Sadagopan (2004), MIS is a computer-based systems providing Ilexible
access and quick data to exact such a deIinition will match with any individual,
proIessional organizations and country system oI inIormation country or the globe.
Clearly, organization system oI inIormation - those relating to activities, planning and
controlling an enterprise - is the elementary reIerred Ior the organizations system oI
inIormation that are generally great, sophistication, structures, automation developing and
vast oI commercial value.

Input: entering data into the inIormation system, seizure or assembling oI raw data Irom
inside the organisation or Irom its extraneous environments to handle in an inIormation
system.
Process: changing and manipulating the data in the inIormation system. The transition,
manipulate, and analyze oI input material into a Iorm is more signiIicant to humans.
utput: getting inIormation out oI the inIormation system, the dispersion oI inIormation
processing Ior people who will utilize it or to the activities Ior which it will be used.
1.2The purpose of information systems

According to Thomson (2009), people need inIormation Ior various reasons and in many
diIIerent ways. They can look Ior inIormation to entertain and enlightened by watching TV,
movies, Internet browsing, listen to the radio, and read newspapers, magazines, and books. In
the business, but, people and organizations search Ior and using inIormation essential to
making decisions and to resolve problems are nearly linked practises that Iorm the basics oI
every success company.
Nowadays, inIormation systems have helped many companies development. One oI these
companies is United Parcel Service (UPS). We will analysis how inIormation system helped
UPS achieve a competitive advantage and suggest some recommendations UPS should be
addressed.
II/ UNITED PARCEL SERVICE (UPS)
2.1 Introduction:

ames E. Casey established UPS in 1907 and is the largest land and air package-dispersion
company in the world. It is a world-wide enterprise, the ninth largest airline oI the world with
over 425,000 staII 93,000 vehicles.
One oI the most important advances oI UPS technologies was the development the
electronics oI all packages on land in 1992 and started the UPS.com website. Several years
later was made available to on wireless equipment making UPS monitor and transit time
easier to enter. The way it works is a tracking number is automatically assigned to the order,
and then people can then enter and use this number to Iind out where their shipment is and
also when they should expect to receive it. By implementing this technology, customers Ieel
more conIident about their order and have a Ieeling better when they can look Iorward to
their delivery instead oI playing the waiting game.
UPS has come such a long way since the development in 1907. The enlargement oI
location and most important technology has helped them become top leader in the delivery.
UPS will continue to grow and succeed as they make progress every day.
2.1 The input, processing, and output of United Parcel Service`s package tracking
systems?
irst and Ioremost, handheld computing devices called Delivery InIormation Acquisition
Device (DIAD) identiIied as an input device used by UPS Ior their packages tracking
systems. Input device will automatically capture customer`s signature together with pick-up,
delivery, and timecards inIormation. DIAD drivers then put adapter on UPS trucks adapter,
the inIormation is then transIerred to UPS computers networks Ior storages and processing by
the computer main UPS in Mahwahh, New errsey, and Alphareta, Georgiana.
Since then, inIormations can be entered all over the world to provide evident oI deliveries to
customer queries. Secondly, Bar-Code equipment and determine an input part because it
helps to scan UPS shipping label inIormation on packages and then put into a central
computer. Customer services representatives can check the status oI any packages oI
computer soItware related to the central computer Irom desktop linked to the central
computer and can respond to immediate requests Irom customers. Customers oI UPS can use
their own computer or wireless devices (pager and cell phone) to access this inIormation Irom
the company`s website .
Following Ravikala & Marcia Robinson (2004), visibility oI the process meant to provide
business customers have access to accurate timely inIormation on order status, product
pricing, and product visibility. Providing visibility to products and services helps create
additional demand. With the UPS tracking system is providing progress visibility. Customers
can use the internet to track air and ground parcels anytime, anywhere, anyplace. UPS have
changed customers` expectations so that Ilawless delivery is now considered the norm, not
the exception. A portion oI the changes in attitudes comes Irom how customers now view the
business oI overnight package delivery. Complex inIormation system allows shipper to call
anytime oI the day or night and to know exactly where their package are. Within minute oI
deliveries, transportation can tell customer not only when but also that the package was
delivered.
Inputs: The input consists oI packages inIormation, the signature oI customers, pick-up,
deliveries, timecard data, current locations (while on the way), payments, and customer
headway document.
Processing: The data is transIerred to a central computer and stored Ior recall. The data is
also reorganized in order to they can be monitored by customers accounts, date, drivers, and
other criteria such as the merger oI orders Ior Iinal delivery oI the package eIIectively.
utputs: The output consists oI receiving and delivery time, location while on the road, and
package receiver. The outputs also consist oI diIIerent statement, such as all packets Ior a
particular account or a motorist or speciIic itinerary, as well as brieI report Ior management.
2.2 The technologies was used by United Parcel Service .
InIormation Technology has helped UPS rebuild itselI and continue to grow. UPS invested
heavily in InIormation Systems Technology to make its business more eIIicient and
customer-oriented. It uses an array inIormation technologies including bar-codes scanning
system. Wireless networks, large mainIrame computers, hand held computers, the Internet,
and many diIIerent pieces oI soItware Ior its operations. Customer can use the website to
arrange UPS delivery and pay the shipment to credit card or account number oI UPS. Anyone
with a package to ship can access the UPS website to track packages, calculate shipping rates,
check delivery routes, decide time in transits and schedule a pick up. The data collected at the
UPS website are transIerred to the central computer and then back to the customers aIter
processing. UPS also provides tools that enable customer such Cisco System to embed UPS
Iunction such as tracking and cost calculation, into their own website so that they can track
shipment without visiting the UPS website.
Technologies included laptop (DIADs), barcode scanners, cable and wireless media
networks, desktop computers, computer centre oI the UPS, hosting storage technology to
provide data packets, in the UPS package monitoring soItware, and varies greatly bits oI
soItware to enter the internet and various parts oI soItware to monitoring packets, calculation
costs, maintain customers account and logistics management.
The Web serves as the platIorm Ior new types oI inIormation systems such as Web-based
tracking system oI their packets. Via using oI DIADs, UPS drivers automatically take
customer`s signature together with pick up, delivery, and time card inIormation. The
inIormation systems oI UPS use this data to monitor the packets during they are being
shipped. The result is a system oI inIormation solution to business challenge to provide a high
quality service at low prices in the Iace oI competition attached.
United Parcel Service has used strategy likely Ior over ninety years. Its strategy is to oIIer the
'best service and lowest rates. One oI the most obvious aspects sides oI technologies is the
possibility oI customers to monitor packets oI his/her through the UPS Website. But,
technologies also enable data to easily running throughout UPS and help streamlined the
working process at UPS. So, the technology described scenario allows UPS to be more
competitive, eIIective, and earn proIits. Cultural oI the UPS has been Iocusing on putting
customer service Iirst. Philosophy oI this company could clearly be Iound in the monitoring
system oI their package.
&PS online tools:
Enhanced 1racking : powerIul tool Ior tracking shipments Irom e-commerce website oI the
shipper using a other that enables shipment tracking Irom the shipper`s E-commerce site
using a purchase order or other reIerence number, thereby improving customer service and
improve the competitive point oI the UPS. UPS customers can to determine where the
package is in transit, thus providing better customer services, and thus supporting oI the UPS.
&PS Signature 1racking, allows customers to track package and obtain prooI when
shipment is complete. Customer receives the digital signatures oI the recipient along with
providing personal address, the proceeds (iI appropriate), and providing reIerences. The
systems allow UPS customer instantly get an oIIicial evidence oI delivery when necessary.
The systems can also improve cash Ilow due to shorter billing cycle while allowing better
customer`s services and inIormation to customers oI the business oI customer oI UPS oI
UPS. Evidence oI delivery is known immediately, and so the payment can be received earlier.
&PS nline 1ools, available in both HTML and XML Iormat, are easily integrated and
downloadable Irom the site oI the UPS. The XML standard creates condition transportation
Iunctions integration into customers systems oI UPS, thereby providing strengthen Ilexible
and ability to mass customization capabilities.

UPS shipping solution
&PS WorldShip, is exclusive soItware that enables the good owners to handle all activities oI
transporting Irom their own computer. rom creating a trademark, create export inIormation,
and certiIy address inIormation, and WorldShip can get customers to 'managing their journey
Irom origins to destination- and back iI needed!
&PS CampusShip, is more user-based security web transport system that allows the transport
packets Irom any internet computer access Ior the perIormance oI the UPS`s mission-related
shipments. This web based tool can be used wherever in the organization that require
minimum training and maintenance
WLAA And Bluetooth

UPS invested in its network at the corporate oIIice and distribution centre in 2000 plus. The
company uses a wireless local area network (WLAN) based on the 802.11b standard and
MicrosoIt CE native support Ior wireless. UPS cooperated with Symbol Technologies Inc.,
the company provided the DIAD IV, to provide wireless solutions on the web-page. More
than 15,000 access points will be required by the WLAN. Wireless connection is more cost
eIIective than traditional wired LANs particular the number oI twisted pair cables it will do to
all the network oI a large distribution centre oI the UPS. Wireless LANs allows the use oI
wireless scanners and readers that are deployed on Iork trucks, pallet jacks and hand the
package processing throughout the enterprise (MobileinIo.com, 2002). UPS will begin using
Bluetooth enabled cordless wireless scanner ring on the hand oI a card sorting machine
package.
III/ CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION

Three major Iactors make the environment the UPS e-commerce: inIrastructure, data
and e-commerce soItware monopoly. These Iactors, together producing an electronic trading
system strong supports the business strategy (mission) oI the company. UPS continuously
investing in new technology to improve operations and meets its strategy, to be the leading
provider oI package and document in the US and around the world. Committed to using
technology to improve services delivery and implementation oI business opportunity leads to
believe that the UPS package will be governed by and document supply service Ior many
years.
UPS was very successIul in apply technologies in business, keep up with
technological advance so that increase competitive advantage with competition and survive
as a business. UPS also has used technology to their advantage to maintain their leadership
in small-package delivery services. However, the technology is more and more change, so
they need to update and upgrade up-to-date inIormation. And, below is some
recommendation Ior it.
Recommendation
To make better decisions, UPS can quickly enter up-to-date inIormation. Via using
inIormation technology, UPS has made the business more eIIiciently.
UPS is the advantage oI decades oI proIessional management oI the distribution network Ior
it global logistics management and supply chain management Ior other Iirms. It creates a
UPS supply chain solutions division that provide the standard service package Ior companies
to register at a Iraction oI what it will cost to build their own system and inIrastructures. UPS
systems was able to solve the design and supply chain management, mail services, customs
brokerage, transport multimodal, and Iinancial services in addition to the logistics services.
UPS maintains a leading company that provide small packages by the InIormation System is
being deployed by UPS. II the system is not available, UPS will not able to keep it millions oI
customers.
O UPS need to improve their data systems. Adding things that could speciIy where
exactly packages were supposed to go.
O UPS need invest more voice recognition technology allow many customers call by the
same time.
O Self-service: To better serve customer, UPS need to increase security Ior Website
package tracking, which is internet providing better service to customers at a lower
cost per transaction to the seller. Other online application read email, providing more
timely Ieedback to customers. (Hoisein Bidgoli, 2004, the internet encyclopaedia
volume 1, ohn Wiley& Sons, inc, Canada). Technology is more and more change. So
UPS need to spend money to change equipment and inIrastructure to catch advance
technology in the world and improve business.
O Wireless/ WLAAS: UPS need to upgrade high-speed wireless local area net work
(WLANS).
O Some UPS`s customer complaint that the systems oI UPS are slow and the staII are
not helpIul, lack oI skill customer services. UPS need to have plan to training Ior IT
staII, who can use more technologies Ior create more new services and Iaster. Because
technology always change, so UPS need Periodically organize training courses Ior
proIessional skills Ior team staIIs about the ability to perIorm technical work with
modern technologies, available conduct perIormance when exposed to customers. At
the same time, planning younger staII has elected oIIicials capacity to intensive
training in the areas oI core business, new services to build a contingent oI skilled
proIessionals, as the core oI human resources in Iuture.
O Shipping: Some customer complaint that they never received their package or
received it in the damaged status. The lost shipment happened because oI wrong
address or some reasons. But that means UPS was not strict in control package. So
UPS need to increase goods manage and improve the quality oI protected goods,
minimize damaged goods when shipping to the customers.
O The supervisor oI USP needs to care so long as the staII Iinished their work on time.
A Iew customers oI UPS said that UPS didn`t delivery on right date. So UPS need to
improve their policy and ensure that the driver delivery package to customers on time
and on date.
O Security: Accessing the UPS website to track the process oI package delivery, and
pay in online, the password will be required. However, UPS need to protect customer
avoid hacker by increasing network security.
