II B.Tech I Semester Supplementary Examinations, Nov/Dec 2011 PROBABILITY AND STATISTICS ( Common to Computer Science & Engineering, Information Technology and Computer Science & Systems Engineering) Time: 3 hours Max Marks: 80 Answer any FIVE Questions All Questions carry equal marks

1. (a) For any three arbitrary events A, B, C, prove that P(A B C ) = P (A) + P(B) + P (C ) P (A B ) P (B C) - P (C A ) + P(A B C ) (b) State and prove Bayes theorem. [8+8]

2. (a) A random variable X is dened as the sum of the numbers on the faces when two dice are thrown. Find the mean of X. (b) A continuous random variable has the probability density function, f (X) = Kxex if x 0, > 0 =0 otherwise Determine the constant K, nd mean and variance.

[8+8]

3. (a) The average number of phone calls/ minute coming into a switch board between 2 PM and 4 PM is 2.5. Determine the probability that during one particular minute there will be i. 4 or fewer ii. more than 6 calls (b) The marks obtained in Mathematics by 1000 students is normally distributed with mean 78% and standard deviation 11%. Determine i. how many students got marks above 90% ii. What was the highest mark obtained by the lowest 10% of the student. iii. Within what limits did the middle of 90% of the students lie. [8+8] 4. Assume that the heights of 3000 male students at a University are normally distributed with mean 68.0 inches and standard deviation 3.0 inches. If 80 samples consisting of 25 students each are obtained, what would be the mean and standard deviation of the resulting sample of means if sampling were done. (a) with replacement (b) with out replacement (c) How many samples would you expect to nd the mean i. between 66.8 and 68.3 ii. less than 66.4 inches. 5. (a) What is a Good Estimator, Explain its properties. 1 of 2 [16]

(b) What is an Unbiased Estimator. Explain positively and negatively biased estimators (c) What is estimation. Explain briey the two ways of estimation.

6. (a) Write the formula for testing the hypothesis concerning Two Means (b) Two types of new cars produced in India are tested for petrol mileage, one sample are consisting of 36 cars averaged 13 kmpl while the other sample consisting of 72 cars averaged 11.5 kmpl with population variances as 1 2 = 1.5 and 22 = 2.0 respectively. Test whether there is any signicance dierence in the petrol consumption of these two types of cars. (use = 0.01). [2+14] 7. (a) Write the properties of t - distribution (b) The manufacturer of a certain make of electric bulbs claims that his bulbs have a mean life of 25 months with a S.D of 5 months. A random sample of 6 such bulbs gave the following values. Life of months: 24, 26 30, 20, 20, 18. Can you regard the producers, claims to be valid at 1% level of signicance? [4+12] 8. At a corporate hospital, patients arrive at an average of 6 patients per hour. A Doctor attends the clinic. Some patients require only the repeat prescription, some come for minor check-up while some other require through inspection for the diagnosis. This takes the doctor six minutes per patient on the average. It can be assumed that arrivals follow Poisson Distribution and the doctors inspection time follows an exponential distribution. Determine. (a) The percent of times a patient can walk right inside the doctors cabin, without having to wait; (b) The average number of patients in the Hospital? [8+8]
