10 Tips For Organic Ant ControI

Posted on April 29th, 2008 by James
We have a bit of an ant problem in the garden, well in
the backyard in general. hate just grabbing the nearest
pesticide and spraying the whole backyard. including the
garden. We are trying to be organic here!
So in the past week or so we have been searching the "intra-
webs for the organic answer to ant control and have found
some quite interesting ways to get rid of ants. All of these are
organic, so if you are looking for the same thing read on
below. The tips below should keep ants from having a party on
your plants.
10 Ways To KiII Ants. OrganicaIIy
1. Baking soda is poisonous to ants, spinkle it around your plants to ensure ants will stay away.
2. Flour & Baby Powder will keep ants from reaching your plants, ants will not cross the powder
so circle your plants with it.
3. You can use coffee grounds, chili powder, cinnamon, peppermint or black pepper. All deter
ants and if you pour coffee grounds directly on an anthill, they will eat the coffee grounds and
implode.
4. Grits, instant rice & cream of wheat can be sprinkled around plants. The ant will eat a piece of
whichever you sprinkle, drink water and the grain expands and kills the ant.
5. Fill a spray bottle with 1 part vinegar and 1 part water and spray on plants. The acid in vinegar
will kills ants.
6. Mix together one-third cup of molasses, six tablespoons of sugar, and six tablespoons of
active dry yeast into a smooth paste. Use the mixture to coat strips of cardboard. Keep out of
reach of pets and small children. You can leave mixture on a saucer outside anthill and they'll eat
it and die!
7. Fold contact paper in half, with the sticky side out and make a circle around base of plant. The
ants get stuck on the paper problem solved.
8. Cut off the bottom of a paper cup and cut a slit up the side of the cup and coat outside with
vaseline and place around base of plant. You can also use packing tape.
9. Mix one cup of borax, two-thirds a cup sugar and one cup water. Dip cotton balls in the
solution and place in areas near your anthill Ants will leave the plants alone and ingest the sweet
mixture. The borax kills the ants.
10. Diatomaceous Earth is a commonly sold organic pesticide that will destroy the insects outer
skeletons, causing the pests to die from dehydration.

That is quite a collection of organic solutions. might try some of them. We have what believe to
be a huge colony of tiny ants under and all around the driveway. Working in the flowers beside
the driveway is tricky. We get bitten. Thanks for posting those tricks.

understand that ants can be a problem, great that people want a healthy alternative to rid them!
Shame people find killing them acceptable-(or even laughable). f we just use a healthy
alternative to send them on their way- is not that better for everyone and every-ant concerned?

Thanks for the great tips. 'll try some of these soonest for the non-fire ants we've got. live in TX
where fire ants are a PROBLEM. We've had good success with a product we got at our local pro-
organic nursery called "Come and Get t. ts a bait, and it can be spread all over or just around
the mounds. The very large mounds take a while, a few applications. 've got one stubborn
mound that we are dealing with. 'm trying beneficial nematodes for that. Also they are good for
grubs, fleas and whiteflies. 'm hoping with the bait nematode combo to get rid of this massive
mound of fire ants. 'm interested, has anyone tried the Diatomaceous Earth? Happy Gardening!

Answer: No, the fire ants we have the most problem with here in Texas are an invasive species
from South America (Brazil if remember correctly) that were brought over accidentally in
shipping container. They eat the native plants and drive out the native fire ants which are a food
source for many native species. ts better for everyone (except the invading ants) if we can get
rid of them.

Kill them all and let God sort it out!!
Well, actually it is impossible to do that, just like it would be impossible to kill all the people on
this planet that want to kill westerners. Yes, 'm talking about slamic extremists. The other
Muslims just want to take over using our laws and laws that they want to be passed to enable
them to do it sooner.
Then of course we could treat ants like some humans in the past have treated sects of people.
Lets just gas them or starve them to death.
Seriously all of the natural remedys listed here will work to some degree. But if you really want to
rid your plantation of ants.you will have to resort to better living through chemistry.
Or you can just put up with them and doctor the bites on your kids and/or keep them in your
house. Just remember tho, if you don't control them, they will be in your house living with you.

We have huge ant problem but noticed one day when using this natural furniture polish around
the window panes that the ants completely disappeared. The furniture polish contains three
ingredients: olive oil, orange oil and an emulsifier. now use this stuff everywhere in the house
where ants appear. They won't go near the stuff. asked our professional insect control person
about this and he said its the orange oil.toxic to ants. The company we use also deals in
organic ant control products but they use a highly concentrated rosemary oil. Anyway, 've rid my
house of these little black pests by mistake. Hope this helps you guys. bought the natural
furniture polish at Whole Foods.

Hi! 'm new to this forum & have been reviewing your readers' comments on the best way/s to kill
ants organically. 'm going to read further, as we have a growing ant problem in out garden, too,
but want to make a comment on one posting.

Thanks for these garden tips. will deffinetly try some of these. might be stating the obvious but
'll add it anyway. t my not be a sure thing but it's worth a try: for indoor ants, if you remove what
they are attracted to they will just go away with out having to kill any of them. For example: if they

6

are eating the bread in your bread box, put the bread in your fridge. Put food in air tight
containers and clean the crumbs out of cabinets and off counter tops and floors. put garbage in
an air tight can. With in a few hours, they all go back to where they came from. f they are
comming in to use your sink on a hot day though, this could be harder. Plugging up the hole they
are coming in through only sometimes works.

had tried all those remedies now they are starting from the bottom. How do keep the ants from

30. Metoo // Mar 12, 2010 at 7:42 am
Borax placed on top or near a nest works wonders. The ants haul it down into the nest and it kills
them. However, the best sure fire way to get rid of ants is to get ducks! Chicken like to eat ants
too, but ducks will walk down an ant line eating every one they find.
31. Lynn // Mar 27, 2010 at 5:18 pm
haven't used chili powder for ants, but mixing chili powder or cayenne pepper with birdseed
discourages the tree rats (squirrels) from dining.

Does anyone know if it makes a difference whether the coffee grounds need to be completely dry
prior to application? just applied today's grounds that were still very moist from the press and
realized that the expansion method might not work if the grounds are wet.

How Lo KIII AnLs WILI GrILs & MoIusses
O

O

O

O Print this article
Grits are often cited as a home remedy that can kill ants by causing them to explode, dehydrate
or starve. n reality, grits alone won't do anything to ants except feed them. f you want to use
grits and molasses to kill ants, you need to add a poison like boric acid (borax). Even then, you
may find more luck using another food source in your bait, such as peanut butter or sugar. t all
depends on what type of ants you are trying to get rid of.
Difficulty:

Moderately Easy
Instructions
Things Youll Need
O cup grILs
O Lsp. moIusses
O ndex curds
O Lsp. borux or borIc ucId
1.
4 1
Mix a quarter cup grits with 1 tsp. molasses.
4 2
Test the food by placing a small amount on index cards in places where you have been ants.
Wait a few hours. f no ants are attracted to the bait, try using other food materials until you find
one that entices them. Other substances you can also use include honey, apple jelly, peanut
butter, ground pet food, bacon grease or corn syrup.
4 3
Add half a tsp. of borax or boric acid to the food. According to W.S. Cranshaw, a Colorado State
University Extension entomologist, good ant baits are between 5 percent to 10 percent (by
weight) boric acid and 90 percent to 95 percent ant food.
4 4
Place small portions of the bait on index cards in places where you have seen ants. Place the
cards out of reach from pets and small children. Store unused ant bait in an airtight container in a
cool, dry place.

12

4 3
Wait for ant bait to work. t can take three to four weeks before the entire ant colony is killed. f no
sign of improvement is seen after one week, remix the bait using more boric acid. f you see
dead ants near the ant bait, use less boric acid in your bait.
4 6
Replace ant bait after two to three weeks or if it has been consumed.
4 7
Continue baiting ants for at least a month or until no more ants are seen

How to kiII ants
by Rex Trulove
People are often acquainted with swarming ants, and wage a personal war against them when
they are found within the house or even in the yard. Killing them can be uppermost in their minds.
t is best to keep in mind whether the intention is to kill ants, or to kill an ant nest.
Ants can be a huge problem; in the yard, in the home and in the garden. Some, like the harvester
ant, are mostly just annoying pests, and they are harmless. Others like the carpenter ant and the
fire ant are much more serious. Carpenter ants can destroy the wood a house is made of, and
fire ants can cause a painful, and at times deadly, sting or bite.
Traits
t is important to understand that what works to kill ants quite well with one species doesn't
necessarily work with another. Most of the common pest ants, though, have a few traits in
general that make it much easier to control them.
For instance, all three kinds of ants mentioned have a distinct liking for things that are sweet.
This leads to a couple fairly easy methods of killing them.
One of the easiest ways is to mix baker's yeast with molasses in a bottle cap and to place it
where the ants can get to it. t should be put where pets can get to it, however, as it can also be
harmful for the pets.
The yeast and the sugars in the molasses combine and begin to ferment. However, the reaction
is slow because of the properties of molasses. The ants ingest this and take it back to the hive or
hill. Usually, it ends up being fed to the queen and other members of the nest.
Here's the thing, though: Fermentation of sugar, in this case that contained in the molasses,
results in the creation and expulsion of carbon dioxide. This reaction between yeast and sugar is
what makes bread rise, and it is what makes a person burp when they drink beer or pop too
quickly. Ants can't burp. So the buildup of the carbon dioxide kills them. f the queen is killed, the
nest dies. (Unlike bees, ants can't just feed special food to larvae to produce new queens.)
Myths
Some people believe that they can kill an ant nest by pouring boiling water over the nest.
Granted, this will kill exposed ants. However, the nests are often extensive in depth and breadth.
Since water cools rapidly when it comes into contact with a substance such as soil, most of the
ants survive and it is unlikely that the hot water will reach the protected queen. Many people try it
and can be dismayed when the nest continues to thrive.
Gasoline or diesel will also kill ants quickly. The same problem exists, though. Most ants survive
and the queen is seldom touched. Using solvents like these have other unwanted effects. They
also kill nearby vegetation and can end up in the water supply, tainting the water people drink.
Large amounts of these fluids can have a long lasting and detrimental affect on a lot more than
the ants.
nsecticides
There are many insecticides on the market that will kill ants. How well they work is a matter of
opinion, and they have the same problems as mentioned. They can end up in the water supply

13

and poison anyone drinking the water, they leave residues that can last for years and they can
kill helpful insects as well as ants, and they can harm other creatures as well.
The queen
The key to wiping out the ants is to kill the queen. Once the queen is dead, the colony can no
longer survive, and it will die out. Without the egg factory, the ant nest is doomed. This is true of
both ground dwelling ants and those that take up residence in the home. The reason the
molasses and yeast works is because it gets to the queen. When she is dead, the rest in that
nest will soon follow. The lifetime of a queen can often be measured in years, while the lifetime of
the workers is more often measured in weeks or months.
t should be remembered that killing a few ants, or even deterring them, is much different than
killing the source, the nest. Even household ammonia will kill an ant, however few people want to
use it to kill all the ants in a nest. Some queen ants are capable of laying 10,000 eggs a year. A
spray bottle with ammonia isn't going to make much of a dent in the population. To stop an
infestation, the queen needs to be irradicated.
Killing ants isn't a trick, though it also isn't easy for long term results. Many things will kill them,
including commercial sprays. However if you want to kill a nest, the goal is to get to the queen.
Spraying poisons isn't an good option. Too many other animals and plants will suffer. t is
perhaps better to think of deterring and discouraging them rather than about how to kill them,
though in some instances, the latter is preferable to the former.
