Victoria notes that graduate school is difficult and rewarding work. She indicated that receiving a full assistantship helped a lot. I credit the McNair Scholars Program for introducing the idea of graduate school to me, she says. And showing me that it is attainable. She is enjoying life in Auburn, Alabama - citing Auburns big campus and friendly faculty as benefits to her new life. She also encourages current Scholars and all Bloomfield College students with these words of advice: Work very hard and dont be afraid to ask for help especially in approaching faculty and administrators for guidance.

Journalists come together to share best practices:

The 2010 Society of Professional Journalists 3-day Convention
Rosa Salamea (Broadcast Journalism) and Amira Onibudo (Broadcast Journalism) attended the 2010 Society of Professional Journalists Conference in Las Vegas, where they met professionals and students from the field of journalism. They learned about new technologies and concepts. They had the opportunity to explore a newsroom on a tour of a KLAS TV Channel 8, where they received tips for success from professional journalists. I discovered that news gathering and proper delivery are great qualities to acquire but these are only secondary to editing, shooting, and mastering digital audio. In addition, I realized that it is important to use data as a reporter so that objectivity can be maintained and provide some context to a story. - says Rosa Salamea who describes the Conference as an opportunity of a lifetime. At the Journalism Expo, our McNair Scholars were able to speak with recruiters from various graduate schools. Amira met a professor from Ball State University who referred her to two professors from Penn State University. From making this connection at the conference, Amira is currently set to conduct summer research with Professor Shyam Sundars Media Lab at Penn State. Rosa and Amira were also inspired upon their return to campus and started a news blog. Check them out at www.ibloomnews.weebly.com.

Graduate School Fairs: Peek Into Your Future!

McNair Scholars understand the importance of attending Graduate School Fairs. They can directly meet recruiters and faculty from schools of their interest as well as discover new schools they had not considered before. Meeting recruiters in person has many advantages. For instance, questions can be answered on the spot, advice can be provided easily, and important contacts can be made. Recruiters and faculty often take the names of students and follow-up about important dates, deadlines, and fellowship opportunities. Students give out business cards provided by the McNair Program.

The Graduate School Fair had more than 30 graduate programs that provided a wealth of information. The Conference Banquet featured Dr. Gabrielle Foreman, Professor of English, who encouraged excellence in scholarship and research.

Day two began with a general session on preservation of global cultural heritage and continued with the poster session - in which McNair Scholars had the opportunity to present their research posters. Fabienne Saturne displayed her poster presentation, Temperature and nutrient-dependent regulation of fatty acids in Candida albicans during this session. After the research portion of the program, all the participants went to the UDEL arts museum where they were introduced to various collections. The museum visits were hosted by the curator of African American Art and the Director of UDEL University Museum. The closing ceremony featured Laurin Parker, doctoral candidate at UDEL, who recounted her transition from being an undergraduate student to admission in graduate school.

Hard work pays off:

Laquisha Coley, recipient of a MassMutual Multi-Cultural Scholarship
Laquisha Coley (Business Administration) received the Hispanic Scholarship Fund Award administered by Mass Mutual Financial Group in September. She was awarded $5000 which will enable her to finish her studies at Bloomfield College and continue her preparation for applying to graduate school Laquisha says that apart from her high GPA, the three essays she submitted were extremely important components that determined her winning proposal. She wrote about heritage, community service and her future endeavors for advancing her academic career. Participation in the McNair Scholars Program helped her immensely. She would like to thank McNair Program Staff for identifying the right scholarship for her and advising her throughout the process.
