Man: OK, well this job requires a lot of travel and knowledge of the world. Have you traveled to many places? Katie: Yes, I have. Ive been all over Asia. Phil: Ive been to Asia and South America. Man: Katie, where have you been in Asia? Katie: Well, Ive been a few times: once to China, once to Thailand, and twice to Japan. Man: Youve never been to Korea? Katie: No, I havent. Phil: I have. And Ive been to China, Japan, and Singapore. Man: What about South America? Have you been to Peru? Phil: Ive never been to Peru, but I lived in Chile for a summer when I was in high school. From there I traveled to Brazil. Man: Now, our show is a little crazy, so its important for you to know how to do different kinds of things. Have you ever driven a sports car? Katie: A sports car? Um, no, I havent. Phil: I have. Man: Have your ever sung karaoke? Katie: Yes, I went to a lot of karaoke bars in Japan. Phil: Uhno. I dont like karaoke. Man: Have you eaten many different kinds of food? Phil: No, not really. Katie: Yes, Ive tried many exotic foods, mostly in Thailand. I love Japanese food, too. Man: Have you ever been on a camping trip in the mountains? Katie: Yes, I hiked in China for three days, and Ive been camping here in the U.S. Phil: Uh, no, Ive never been camping. Man: And have you ever ridden an elephant? Katie: Yes, in Thailand! Phil: Well, no. Im, uh, afraid of elephants. Man: OK, thats all, Katie and Phil. Thank you for your time. Present Perfect I (past events)

We use the Present Perfect to say that an action happened at an unspecified time before now. The exact time is not important. We CANT use the Present Perfect with specific time expressions such as: yesterday, last week, at that moment, etc. In this case we have to use the simple past. The Present Perfect indicates past events too, however it is used when the action is important and no the time. Take a look at the examples: - Ive been all over Asia. --- Present Perfect (this happened and it doesnt matter when) - I went all over Asia last month --- Simple Past (it is important to mention when it happened) - Susy has eaten all different kinds of food you can imagine --- Present Perfect (the important thing to mention is the experience, no when it happened). - Susy ate too much past at lunch today, thats why shes not feeling well. --- Simple Past (the time here is important to be mentioned). So, one of the uses of the present perfect is: to express past, but when time is not mentioned. = Look at how we form a sentence in the present perfect tense: I, you, we, they + have + participle of main verb. Example: I / you / Dad and I / Our neighbors have ridden not only horses, but camels and elephants too. He, she, it + has + participle of main verb. Example: Brian / Laura / The dog has gone up the stairs very quickly. = have and has are just auxiliary verbs, so they are not translated. The verb after then (which is in the past participle) is translated in the past tense. = It is possible to use the contracted form: Have = `ve / has = `s

Examples: -Weve planned all the details of our trip. - Megs driven up to there, not her husband. In negative sentences we use: HAVE NOT or HAVENT + Past participle of main verb. HAS NOT or HASNT + Past participle of main verb. Examples: - Marie hasnt bought the tickets there. - Our relatives havent called us before coming. Considering HAVE and HAS are just auxiliary verbs, they are used in the short answers. Examples: - Have the students done the homework? - Yes, they have / No, they havent. - Has Jessica brought the food? - Yes, she has / No, she hasnt. To ask questions the auxiliary verbs HAVE and HAS are placed before the subject. Examples: - Have the boys showed up? - Has he sung my favorite song? Exercise 4 Complete the following sentences using the present perfect form of the verb (HAVE / HAS + past participle). - Has (He, She e It) a. My wife and I have eaten at that restaurant before. (to eat) b. She says she has been in Alaska twice. (to be) c. The weather has turned cold, dont you think. (to turn) d. The teacher has assigned more than ten pages of homework. (to assign) e. Go over the next sentences taken from the first exercise: - Ive never been to Peru. - Have you ever driven a sports car? Some words are generally used with the present perfect tense because in a way they make clear the importance of the action which is being discussed and not the time of it. NEVER, EVER and ALREADY are the most common ones. NEVER is used in sentences which convey a negative meaning, EVER in interrogative sentences and ALREADY in affirmative sentences. Observe the example: Jimmy: Have you ever ridden a camel, Bia? Bia: A camel? No, Ive never had that opportunity. But, you know, Ive already done exciting things as well.

Jimmy: Such what? Bia: Well, Ive already fed a lion. Believe it? Jimmy: This is insane! Bia: Id say it was thrilling. Important: NEVER, EVER, and ALREADY are always placed between the auxiliary verb (HAS/ HAVE) and the main verb. I love being self-employed. Ive been to about forty countries and Ive stayed in some of the worlds best hotels. Ive written travel articles about lots of amazing places two weeks ago I went to Mexico and last month I spent five days in Barbados, in the Caribbean. But Ive never been to Australia. Id love to go there one day, when I have time but for a holiday, not for work!

Weve had lots of other jobs. Three years ago Guy was a teacher and I worked in an office. But rather be self-employed and we love having our own restaurant. Weve met some really interesting people last year the Prime Minister had dinner here! But its very hard work and Guy and I have never had a holiday together. We might go to Miami next year Guy hasnt been to the USA before.

Read the text about Lochness. Loch Ness Loch Ness is a lake between the Scottish towns of Inverness and Fort Augustus. The word loch is Scottish for lake. Loch Ness is about 37 km long and extremely deep, the deepest part is 226 m. Loch Ness is famous for its friendly monster, Nessie. Most people think that this is only a legend, but every year tourists from all over the world come to Loch Ness and hope that they will see the monster.
