A Christmas Carol
Introduction
A Christmas Carol is a simple story but a challenging text, especially for young learners, ESOL students and reluctant readers. The first task will be to enthuse classes for the reading task to come lesson aims Objectives 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. Provide an overall introduction to the story and encourage students to believe that they can tackle the text. Establish the following key elements of Christmas Carol The character of Scrooge. Establish his relationship with Marley, Fred and Bob Cratchit Time & Place: Early-Victorian London/Christmas etc. Social Themes; the poor laws, population surplus, social responsibility

Warm-up/Before Reading
6. 7. 8. Play clip from the opening of A Muppet Christmas Carol. Write down three words they think best describe Scrooge. Introduce Before Reading Worksheet or activity. Read opening description of Scrooge. Complete BR activity to establish the pre-ghost character of Scrooge.
