III. VAB-Line Digital Speaker System (DSS) Bus

III.1. VAB-Line DSS Bus - General Information
III.1.1. Bus Characteristics
The VAB-Line Digital Speaker System (DSS) Bus is a proprietary KLOTZ DIGITAL bus system with proprietary
KLOTZ DIGITAL bus format. The DSS Bus has the following functions:
• Distribution of electrical power to the DSS Bus modules
• Distribution of audio data to the DSS Bus modules (unidirectional data flow)
• Distribution of control data to and from the DSS Bus modules (bidirectional data exchange)

The installation of the VARIZONE VAB-Line DSS Bus components can be realized either via CAT5 or via
J-Y(ST)Y cables. Regardless which of these cable types is used for the installation of the DSS Bus components
the cable length should not exceed 200 m (660 ft) before one of the following DSS Bus components is installed:
• Repeater for data refresh
• Power Bridge for data and power refresh
Although the bus connection is electrically interrupted by the installation of a Repeater or Power Bridge, all
cable sections are part of one and the same DSS Bus, because the same audio and control data are exchanged
between the sections.

III.1.2. Data Exchange

The control and audio data exchange between the VARIZONE controller and the DSS Bus components can be
realized as follows:
• Via the 4 built-in DSS Bus RJ45 or Phoenix-type connectors on the rear panel of the VAB-Line VARIZONE

III.2.2. Additional Components - Data and Power Refresh

Long cables and the installation of many modules may cause the following situations on a VAB-Line DSS Bus:
• Due to a long cable connection the quality of the transferred signals has reduced that much that a data
refresh is necessary.
• The power on the DSS Bus is not sufficient for the supply of more modules. A power refresh is necessary if
more modules are to be installed.
The VARIZONE VAB-Line offers the following devices to refresh the DSS Bus data and to feed power into the
DSS Bus:
• Line Interface to feed in power
• Data Repeater to refresh the data
• Power Bridge to refresh the data and the power on the bus
The following sections provide examples of the installation of a Line Interface, a Data Repeater and a Power
Bridge.

III.2.21. Line Interface

NOTE!
DSS Buses coming from a VAB-Line DSS Interface Card do not carry any power. Therefore, a Line Interface
must be installed directly after the DSS Interface Card for power feed-in before DSS modules can be power-sup-

III.2.22. Repeater
Whenever the quality of the signals on a DSS Bus is insufficient but no additional power is needed at this point,
DSS Bus Repeaters are used. The use of Repeaters is required for the bridging of distances of more than 200 m (660 ft)*

III.2.23. Power Bridge

The VARIZONE system offers the Power Bridge in 2 different designs:
• As a Single Mode Power Bridge
• As a Split Mode Power Bridge
Single Mode Power Bridges are used if the DSS Bus is extended in 1 line as shown in the example below.
An example for the installation of Split Mode Power Bridges follows in the next example.

III.2.3. Additional Components - Line Manager

The VARIZONE Line Manager makes it possible to carry out the following:
• to monitor a 70 V / 100 V sound reinforcement system
• to interconnect a VARIZONE VAB-Line system and a 70 V / 100 V sound reinforcement system and monitor
the 70 V / 100 V sound reinforcement system

The picture below gives an example of the monitoring of a 70 V / 100 V sound reinforcement system with the

II.3. VAB-Line DSS Bus

III.3.1. Termination
Each bus section needs to be terminated on either side.
The beginning of the complete VAB-Line DSS Bus is automatically terminated at the DSS Bus outputs of the
VARIZONE controller respectively of the VAB-Line DSS Interface Card. The RJ45 connector outputs for the
CAT5 cabling variant are terminated with 100 Ω. The Phoenix-type outputs for the J-Y(ST)Y cabling variant are
terminated with 90 Ω. The end of the complete VAB-Line DSS Bus has to be terminated by the last module on
the bus.
If the DSS Bus consists of 2 or more sections all necessary terminations between the VAB-Line VARIZONE
controller and the last module on the complete DSS Bus are carried out by the installed Repeaters and Power
Bridges as follows:
• Repeater Termination at the DSS Bus input Previous bus section is terminated at the end
Termination at the DSS Bus output Next bus section is terminated at the beginning

• Single Mode Termination at the split line output Previous bus section is terminated at the end
Power Bridge Termination at the DSS Bus output Next bus section is terminated at the beginning

• Split Mode Termination at the DSS Bus output Next bus section is terminated at the beginning

NOTE!
The Split Mode Power Bridge has 1 input and 2 outputs functioning as follows:

The I-PAMs are terminated by means of removable 90 Ω or 100 Ω resistors. On a CAT5-cabled DSS Bus, the
last I-PAM needs to be terminated with 100 Ω. The last I-PAM on a J-Y(ST)Y-cabled DSS Bus requires a 90 Ω
termination.

NOTE!
The removable termination resistors are included in the delivery of both the VAB1 Controller and the Line Inter-
face as follows:
• RJ45 version: Four RJ45 connectors with 100 Ω termination, one connector per DSS Bus, to be
plugged in
• Screw terminal /
Phoenix-type version: Eight 90 Ω resistors, two resistors per DSS Bus, to be screwed in

III.3.2. CAT5 Cabling

III.3.21. Basic Components
The heart of the VARIZONE VAB-Line system is the VARIZONE VAB1 Controller. The VAB1 Controller offers 4
VAB-Line DSS Bus outputs used for the following:
• Transmission of audio data from the VARIZONE controller to the DSS Bus modules
• Exchange of control data between VARIZONE controller and DSS Bus modules
• Transmission of power from the VARIZONE controller to the DSS Bus modules

Another basic VAB-Line component is the I-PAM. The I-PAM is used to select audio signals from the DSS Bus,
process the signals if necessary and amplify them for transmission via speakers. Each I-PAM can be additionally
equipped with Volume Control and Channel Select Extensions.

The whole DSS Bus connection is realized via CAT5 cable with RJ45 connectors, starting at the female RJ45
connectors on the back of the VARIZONE controller labeled “DSS Bus 1-4”.

Following, the cabling details of the connection between a VAB-Line VARIZONE controller and an I-PAM
mounted to a loudspeaker are illustrated exemplarily on the basis of 1 DSS Bus. Actually, the specifications apply
for all available buses.

NOTE!
The DSS Bus installation of the Repeater, the Single Mode Power Bridge and the Split Mode Power Bridge is
carried out via the same docking station. The DSS Bus termination via this docking station is realized as follows:
• The DSS Bus output termination of the docking station is carried out automatically for all uses of the docking
station at the DSS output labeled “OUT DSS Bus”.
• The input termination is carried out by a male RJ45 connector with an integrated 100 Ω termination. The male
RJ45 connector with termination is plugged into the female RJ45 docking station connector labeled “OUT
DSS Bus to Split Power Bridge” by default.
If the docking station is meant to be used for the installation of a Split Mode Power Bridge no input termination
is needed and the male RJ45 connector with the integrated 100 Ω termination needs to be unplugged.

III.3.3. J-Y(ST)Y Cabling

III.3.31.

The whole DSS Bus connection is realized via J-Y(ST)Y cable with Phoenix-type connectors, starting at the
Phoenix-type DSS Bus connectors on the back of the VARIZONE controller labeled “DSS Bus 1-4”.

Following, the cabling details of the connection between a VAB-Line VARIZONE controller and an I-PAM
mounted to a loudspeaker are illustrated exemplarily on the basis of 1 DSS Bus. Actually, the specifications apply
for all available buses.

NOTE!
The DSS bus installation of the repeater, the single mode power bridge and the split mode power bridge is car-
ried out via the same docking station. The DSS bus termination via this docking station is realized as follows:
• The DSS bus output termination of the docking station is carried out automatically for all uses of the docking
station at the DSS output labeled “OUT DSS Bus”.
• The input termination is carried out via 2 resistors that are by default screwed into the pins 1 - 4 of the 9-pin
screw terminal on the docking station labeled “OUT DSS Bus to Split Power Bridge”.
If the docking station is meant to be used for the installation of a split mode power bridge no input termination
is needed and the 2 resistors have to be removed from the screw terminal on the docking station.

VARIZONE INSTALLATION GUIDE VAB-Line Paging Bus general information 72

IV. VAB-Line Paging Bus

IV.1. VAB-Line Paging Bus - General Information
IV.1.1. Bus Characteristics
The VAB-Line Paging Bus is an 1-CH analog audio and data communication bus, used to connect VARIZONE
VAB-Line Paging Stations to the VARIZONE VAB1 Controller. The VAB-Line Paging Bus has the following func-
tions:
• Distribution of electrical power to the VAB-Line Paging Stations
• Distribution of analog audio data from the VAB-Line Paging Station to the VAB1 Controller (unidirectional data
flow)
• Exchange of control data between the VAB-Line Paging Station and the VAB1 Controller (bidirectional data
exchange)
The installation of the VAB-Line Paging Station can be realized either via CAT5 or via J-Y(ST)Y cables. The
Paging Station is cabled via a standard wall panel with RJ45 sockets.
IV.1.2. Data Exchange
The audio and control data exchange between the VAB-Line controller and the VAB-Line Paging Stations is real-
ized via the VAB-Line Paging Interface Card VZ 3500x. The Paging Interface Card provides 4 RJ45 connectors
or 4 Phoenix-type screw terminals to carry out the bus cabling of the VAB-Line Paging Stations. In principle, the
VAB-Line Paging Stations are power supplied via the bus. The power is fed into the Paging Buses via the 4 input
connectors of the Paging Interface Card VZ 3500x.
IV.1.3. Order of Installation
Proceed as follows to install a VARIZONE VAB-Line Paging Bus:
1. Run the cables according to the cable installation plan.
2. Install all connectors according to the cable installation plan.
3. Use a standard network cable tester to test the cables for the following:
• Short circuit
• Continuity
• Polarity
4. Address all Paging Stations via the DIP switch on the back of the device.
5. Terminate the last Paging Station on the bus via the DIP switch.
6 Connect all Paging Stations to the tested cables according to the installation plan.
7. Power up the system.
8. Make sure that all Paging Stations are detected by the VAB1 Controller.

IV.3. VAB-Line Paging Bus

IV.3.1. Termination
Each VAB-Line Paging Bus needs to be terminated on either side. The beginning of the Paging Bus is automati-
cally terminated with 100 Ω by the Paging Interface Card. Depending on the way of bus cabling, the termination
at the end of the Paging Bus has to be carried out in one of the following ways:

If the bus cabling of the Paging Station is carried out directly at the Paging Station:
Via switch 3 of the 4-pole DIP switch of the last Paging Station on the bus as follows:

Switch no. Switch position Meaning

3 OFF The termination is switched off.
3 ON The termination is switched on.

If the bus cabling of the Paging Station is carried out via a standard connecting box with RJ45 connector

IV.3.22. External Power Supply of the Paging Stations

Basically, VAB-Line Paging Stations are meant for internal power supply via the Paging Bus. But specific combi-
nations of Paging Bus factors such as cable length and number of installed modules may necessitate the installa-
tion of an external 12 VDC - 24 VDC PSU.
The overall maximum allowable bus cable length is 1000 m / 3300 ft.
The maximum allowable number of Paging Stations per Paging Bus is 4.

The table below provides a survey of the Paging Bus restrictions with reference to the interdependencies
between cable length and number of installed Paging Stations.

VARIZONE INSTALLATION GUIDE Module Addressing VAB-Line DSS Bus 87

V. Addressing of VAB-Line Modules

V.1. DSS Bus
V.1.1. Address Assignment
Each DSS Bus component needs to be addressed on the bus. All bus components are arranged in the following
different address groups, offering 127 addresses per group:
• I-PAMs
Addresses are automatically assigned on the basis of the unique IDs as described in section IV.1.2. below.

NOTE!
Volume Control and Channel Select Extensions do not have to be addressed separately as they are addressed
via the I-PAM they are connected with.

• Power Bridges and Repeaters

Addresses 0 - 126, the addresses are assigned via the Handheld Programmer as described in section VII.2.5.
of this document.
• Other modules such as the Line Manager
In theory addresses 0 - 126, for the Line Manager 0 - 15; the Line Manager’s address is adjusted via a 16-posi-
tion rotary code switch as described in section V.1.4. below.

NOTE!
Although each DSS Bus offers in theory 127 Line Manager addresses, the actual maximum possible number of
Line Managers per DSS Bus is restricted to 16. This restriction results from the 16-position rotary code switch.

Each address must occur only once within a group.

The following illustrations provide examples for the addressing of modules on the VAB-Line DSS Bus.

V.1.2. Addressing of I-PAMs

Each I-PAM gets a unique ID in the form of a 7-place number, which is imprinted on the I-PAM’s mounting angle.
The I-PAM package includes a label providing two stickers with the unique ID. The stickers are designed to
simplify the assignment of I-PAM names to I-PAM unique IDs during the installation of the system. One of the
stickers is stuck on the loudspeaker the I-PAM is integrated in from the outside during installation. The second
sticker can - depending on the addressing procedure - either be stuck in an GUI-generated unique ID list or in the
cable plan.
Proceed as follows to address the I-PAMs:
A. I-PAM addressing procedure with a GUI generated unique ID list
1. Enter a name per I-PAM in the GUI (e.g. “Cafeteria”, “Computer room”, “Office” etc.)
2. Print a list with all I-PAM names that have been entered before. The list also provides an empty column
headed “Unique ID” and looks roughly as illustrated below:

I-PAM name Unique ID

Cafeteria

Computer room

...

3. Add the unique IDs of the installed I-PAMs to the list as follows:
• Take the list and the remaining I-PAMs stickers for all modules and go to the first installed I-PAM (e.g.
the I-PAM in the cafeteria). The loudspeaker the first I-PAM is integrated in is labeled with one of the two
added unique ID stickers from the outside.
• Take the remaining unique ID sticker for this I-PAM and stick it in the corresponding line of the empty
unique ID column of the list as exemplified below.

NOTE!
Instead of sticking in the unique ID sticker it is also possible to copy the unique ID number from the sticker
on the loudspeaker the I-PAM is integrated in as exemplified below.

4. Repeat the procedure for all installed I-PAMs one by one.

5. Take the complemented list back to the computer and proceed as follows:
- enter all unique IDs from the printed list on the list in the GUI
or
- scan all bar codes from the printed list (not possible with handwritten entries).

B. I-PAM addressing procedure with a cable plan

1. Stick the unique ID stickers in the cable plan as follows:
• Take the cable plan and the unique ID stickers of all I-PAMs and go to the first installed I-PAM. The
loudspeaker the I-PAM is integrated in is labeled with one of the two added unique ID stickers from the
outside.

VarizoneVab-LineInstallationGuideM080110 Specifications are subject to change without notice © KLOTZ DIGITAL 2008
VARIZONE INSTALLATION GUIDE Module Addressing VAB-Line DSS Bus 95

• Take the remaining unique ID for this I-PAM and stick it next to the corresponding I-PAM in the cable
plan.

NOTE!
Instead of sticking the unique ID sticker next to the corresponding I-PAM in the cable plan it is also
possible to make handwritten entries.

2. Repeat the procedure for all installed I-PAMs one by one.

3. Enter a name per I-PAM in the GUI (e.g. “Cafeteria”, “Computer room”, “Office” etc.)
4. Take the cable plan with the stuck or filled in unique IDs and proceed as follows:
- enter all unique IDs from the cable plan on the list in the GUI
or
- scan all bar codes from the cable plan (not possible with handwritten entries)

NOTE!
Independent from the addressing procedure, each I-PAM is automatically internally addressed as soon as
the unique ID is entered on the list in the GUI.

NOTE!
In case of exchange (e.g. for service purposes), the exchanged I-PAMs are addressed as follows:
• If only one I-PAM per bus is exchanged, the GUI carries out the entry of the unique ID of the
exchanged I-PAM automatically.
• If more than one I-PAM per bus is exchanged, the unique IDs of the exchanged I-PAMs must be
entered as described above.

V.1.3. Addressing of Power Bridges and Repeaters

The Power Bridges and Repeaters are addressed with the Handheld Programmer. A detailed description of the
carrying out of the module addressing with the Handheld Programmer is given in section VII.2.5. of this docu-
ment.

V.1.4. Addressing of Other Modules

The address of the VARIZONE Line Manager is adjusted via a 16-position rotary code switch on the back of the
device. Therefore, the maximum possible number of Line Managers on one and the same DSS Bus is 16.
Proceed as follows to address the Line Manager:
• Rotate the switch clockwise to increase the address number.
• Rotate the switch counterclockwise to decrease the address number.

VII.2. VAB-Line DSS Bus Use of the Handheld Programmer

VII.2.1. General Information on Cable Testing and Module Addressing
Cable testing with the Handheld Programmer
1. Each VAB-Line DSS Bus can be composed of one or several bus sections. A bus section is one of the follow-
ing interconnections:
• VAB1 Controller and DSS Repeater or Power Bridge
• Line Interface and Repeater or Power Bridge
• DSS Repeater and DSS Power Bridge
• Two DSS Power Bridges
• The interconnection between the end of the VAB-Line DSS Bus and any of the following VAB-Line
components:
• VAB1 Controller
• Line Interface
• Repeater
• Power Bridge
2. The beginning of each DSS Bus section has to be equipped with a test adapter before the Handheld Pro-
grammer can be connected. The beginning of a DSS Bus section is the bus cable end that has been discon-
nected from one of the following VAB-Line components:
• VAB1 Controller
• Line Interface
• Repeater
• Power Bridge
3. The installation and use of the Handheld Programmer on the VAB-Line DSS Bus is carried out in sections,
starting after the VAB1 Controller or, if existing, the Line Interface.
4. The cable testing is carried out by means of a test adapter. The following three test adapter types are included
in the delivery of the Handheld Programmer:
• Test adapter with RJ45 connector
• Test adapter with Phoenix-type connector
• Test adapter with screw terminal
If none of the included test adapters is suitable for the cable testing of a VAB1 system, the customer can take
the most suitable of the included adapters and modify it according to the system requirements.
