Donations to Warm The Children, a program to provide winter clothing to qualified families and sponsored by the Vilas County NewsReview, have been steadily coming in and now reached approximately $22,557 almost halfway toward its goal of $50,000, according to News-Review Publisher Kurt Krueger. Because the program has been in effect these past 15 seasons, local parents are aware it exists and have hopes to obtain warm clothing for their children, commented program coordinator Sharina Adams. We know winter is well on its way since last weeks snowstorm; it is my hope that it made our readers more aware of the need and that they will donate to the program, Adams continued. Every cent received goes to purchase warm winter clothing for area children. Salvation Army campaign slated to begin this Friday

The Salvation Army in Vilas County announced the launch of its annual Christmas campaign this Friday, Nov. 18, to help raise money for those in need who often remain overlooked during the holidays and all year long. Organizers said this years campaign theme, Hope Wanted, will draw attention to the continuing hardships men, women and children face in the wake of the ongoing economic struggle. Many families are drained by waning unemployment benefits, high costs of living and lack of jobs. Theyre not just looking for help, theyre looking for hope, said Kettle Coordinator Joe Eisle. The Salvation Armys timehonored Christmas campaign will include the highly visible red kettles at Trigs, Nelsons Ace Hardware, Pamida, Roundys Pick n Save and Walgreens. Bell ringing will also take place in the St. Germain, Sayner and Land O Lakes areas. The Salvation Army in Vilas County hopes to raise $35,000 to help sustain the programs and services that help needy people in their daily struggle for survival. A silent weekend
The room was silent in spite of the 200 people in it. Lunch was also silent. The voice of the leader as she instructed us about meditation techniques and the philosophy behind it was the only sound I heard for two days. I started meditating about 35 years ago, but when my husband, Bill, was so sick, I found myself struggling for time as I took care of him and abandoned my practice, for the most part, when I needed it most. I regret that. This past weekend, determined to get back into my habit of meditating each day, at least once if not more often, I attended a mindfulness retreat on the UWMadison campus. Author and instructor Sharon Salzburg, a down-to-earth and humorous teacher, led us in meditation while Cheri Maples, a retired Madison police officer and founder of the Center for Mindfulness and Justice, taught us about the philosophy behind mindfulness and justice. I came home from two days of being instead of do, do, doing calm and refreshed, and plan to do another three-day retreat in January. The being and doing element of the weekend was important. So was a deeper awareness of the importance of our intentions, of lovingkindness, and more. Yes, these are all elements of Buddhism, but the room was filled with people from a variety of spiritual and religious backgrounds, meditation being one of the common denominators of them all. Students compete in poster contests

Area elementary and middle school students recently participated in the 2011 Conservation Awareness Poster Contest at the local, regional and state levels. Students designed posters around the 2011 conservation awareness theme of Forests For People More Than You Can Imagine! The county level contest was sponsored by Vilas County Land Conservation and Olson Memorial Library. Criteria for poster judging included relevance to the conservation theme, originality, neatness, readability and accuracy of the conservation message. The 2011 poster judges were Mariquita Sheehan of Vilas County, Sherri Buller from Trees For Tomorrow, and local artist Kristen Beyer. I want to thank the three poster judges who ranked more than 60 finalist posters at the library. Judging is hard work because there are so many great artists, said Carolyn Scholl, Vilas County conservationist and contest coordinator. All student finalists at the local level were invited to attend an art reception and awards ceremony recently held at Olson Memorial Library in Eagle River. Poster entries were divided into three age divisions, consistent with the national level contest: elementary division (grades two to three); middle division (four to six grades), and junior division (grades seven to nine). Third-place winner in the elementary division was Rowan Klaver. Avery Adamovich took second place and Anna Peterson-Kristek placed first. It was a close race in the middle division, but the thirdplace winner was Joseph Misina, second place went to Isabelle Valeria and the firstplace winner was Megan Scholl. Winners in the junior grade division were Lucas Giebal, who took third place, second place went to Jenna Paez and first place went to Kerri Seyfert. First-place winners from the county poster contest then moved on to the Regional contest held in Wausau Oct. 27. The regional contest included conservation poster winners from 10 other counties in the north central region of Wisconsin. Scholls poster placed first in the Regional middle division contest and moved to the State contest held Saturday, Nov. 5, in Waupaca. At the end of the day, Scholls poster took second overall at the State competition in the middle grade division. The theme for the 2012 Conservation Awareness Poster Contest will be Soil to Spoon. Food program set at Head Start

The Family and Child Learning Centers of Northeast Wisconsin Inc. has announced the sponsorship of Child and Adult Care Food Program at Eagle River Head Start and Rhinelander Head Start. Regulations require that sponsors annually make available to the media a public release announcing the availability of free meals to all enrolled children without regard to race, color, national origin, sex, age or disability. The Child and Adult Care Food Program receives funding from the U.S. Department of Agriculture and is administered by the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction. The program provides financial assistance to childcare centers so that nutritious meals can be integrated with nonresidential child-care services. The goal of the program is to improve the diets of young children and increase the opportunity for children to eat a variety of nutritious foods.

Branson concert took audience back to simpler time

The Three Lakes School/ Community Arts Association recently presented Branson on the Road at the Three Lakes High School auditorium. The show was the third of four performances of the assoevening. Horton, the only woman who ever played lead guitar for Johnny Cash, assumed the lead guitar role during the Johnny Cash medley. You could feel the energy level rise as she played lead for Capps, who did a fine job mimicking the classic Cash vocal style. Other highlights of the evening included an original rendition of Orange Blossom Special and a step back in time with music of the Carter family, featuring their trademark song, Wildwood Flower. Branson on the Road also offered an appropriate salute to the veterans in the audience, recognizing individual branches of the military as they played their songs. The performance gave the audience a great mixture of Hee Haw humor and classic country western music that, for a few hours, pleasantly took the audience back to a simpler time. Jim Kuchenbecker is a fan of classic country western music, the choir director at Christ Lutheran Church in Eagle River and principal of Sugar Camp Elementary School.

When I put it aside to care for Bill, I missed it and would find myself turning to it, but not as regularly as I once did. Mindfulness is about awareness of the moment. One can do mindfulness practices while doing the dishes by hand and just focusing on what one is doing. One can practice it while walking and, in fact, we did a lot of mindful walking this past weekend. If you had gotten off the elevator at the right moment, you would have seen 200 people walking the halls in total silence, focused on their walking or focused on the sounds

they heard or just on what they saw. It is about being in the moment. When we live our lives that way, we make better decisions. We respond, rather than react to people and events, and we are more peaceful and, yes, happy. I recommend Sharons book, Real Happiness: The Power of Meditation, to anyone who wishes to explore this way of being peaceful. It is down to earth and practical. Nicolet program to focus on green construction
Nicolet Area Technical Colleges new architectural technology program classes will begin in January. The program was designed to give students traditional building trades skills along with significant knowledge about how to incorporate green building practices and materials into residential home design and construction. Increasingly people who are building new homes or remodeling want to incorporate energy-saving and other environmentally sustainable features in their homes, said Nicolet College President Elizabeth Burmaster. Graduates from the architectural technology program will provide local construction contractors with a greater ability to provide these services which, in turn, will help these businesses be successful, she added. The two-year associate degree is comprised of 23 classes that include traditional construction courses as well as green-oriented offerings such as building green residential, alternative energy overview, and principles of sustainability. Green construction is a clear trend in the industry, said Jeff Labs, architectural technology and building trades instructor at Nicolet. Students who graduate from the program will have multiple skills with a new technology. This will give them a definite advantage in landing that first job after college and advancing in the field as they get more experience. Occupations for graduates include residential designer, architectural technician, draftsperson, project manager and building inspector. The Oneida County Veterans Service Office said they are often asked whether or not a veteran can get hearing aids through the Veterans Affairs (VA). According to the service office, a veteran must be in the VA health-care system before being considered for hearing aids. Guidelines for eligibility include service-connected hearing loss or ear-related disease, including tinnitus, rated at 0%; any service-connected disability rated 10% or higher; a former prisoner of war; a Purple Heart recipient; or a recipient of a VA pension with housebound or aid and attendance benefits. Hearing loss that resulted from a disease or another medical condition for which

the veteran is receiving care or services from the VA or which resulted from treatment of that condition, such as stroke, traumatic brain injury, diabetes, multiple sclerosis or significant functional or cognitive impairment evidenced by deficiencies in the ability to perform activities of daily living may also be included. Anyone who thinks they may be eligible for hearing aids must see their VA primary-care provider. If the provider believes the criteria have been met, the provider will do a consultation for an audiogram. According to the sponsors of the event, Sugar Camp is a community which honors its Polish heritage and the Polish Square Fun Run/Walk was born out of this pride. The Northwoods Alliance for Temporary Housing Inc. (NATH) Frederick Place homeless shelter was one of two nonprofit organizations in the community which received proceeds from this community event and was presented with $1,000. These funds will help pay operating expenses for the 16bed shelter, such as food, utilities, insurance, case management, supplies and staff salaries. NATH representatives expressed their appreciation to participants and sponsors of the event. NATH asked businesses, organizations, families and individuals to partner with them during November in honor of National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week, to help shelter those experiencing homelessness in the North Woods. VFW blood drive donors can win a Mini for a month

The Eagle River Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) will host a community blood drive Tuesday, Nov. 22, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the VFW, located at 418 W. Pine St. in Eagle River. Residents of Eagle River and the surrounding area are welcome to participate. When a patient needs blood at Ministry Eagle River Memorial Hospital, it is supplied by the Community Blood Center, said Jan Hadsell at the blood center. Were so grateful to the dedicated blood donors in communities like Eagle River. These generous people help ensure that area hospitals receive a steady, ample supply of blood for their hospital patients, she said. Anyone 21 and older who donates at this blood drive or other blood drives between Nov. 21 and Dec. 5 can enter a drawing to win the use of a Mini Cooper for 30 days from Bergstrom Mini of the Fox Valley. Bergstrom Mini of the Fox Valley and the Community Blood Center are partnering for the Mini Cooper drawing to encourage blood donations near Thanksgiving, a time when blood donations usually decrease. Blood donors must be at least 17 years old (16 with parental permission), weigh at least 110 pounds, be in general good health, and take a photo identification to the blood drive. Walk-in donors are welcome, but scheduling an appointment keeps the total time required for a donation to less than an hour, according to the blood center.

Gardeners volunteer work recognized

The Vilas County UWExtension office has announced that 16 master gardeners have met or exceeded their requirements of 24 hours of volunteer hours and 10 hours of continuing education. The gardeners are Laurel Anderson, Jean Haack,M a r y Ann Lambrecht, Mary Stys, Anne Appel, Karen Hahn, Bill Lamon, Peri Tennikait, Shirley Egan, Kay Hershberger, Cora Mollen, Mary Anna Thornton, Patrick Goggin, Debra Ketchum-Jircik, Cathy Palmer and Karen Young. Some of the gardeners received recognition for reaching cumulative volunteer service including: Anderson and Ketchum-Jircik, 500 hours; and Mollen, 750 hours. Authority: This ordinance is adopted pursuant to the authority granted town boards under s. 60.44(2), Wis. Stats. which allows for the adoption of an alternative claim procedure for approving financial claims against the town which are in the nature of bills and vouchers. Section 2. Funds are available under the town budget to pay the bill or voucher. 2. The item or service covered by the bill or voucher has been duly authorized. 3. The item or service covered by the bill or voucher has been supplied or rendered in conformity with the authorization. 4. The claim appears to be a valid claim against the town. The town clerk may require submission of proof to determine compliance with the conditions under (1-4), prior to approval. For example, the clerk may require verification of quantity, quality, etc. by another town official or employee. After determining that the above conditions have been met, the clerk shall indicate approval of the claim by placing his or her signature on the bill. Upon approval of a bill or voucher under this procedure, the clerk shall prepare and sign a check and have it countersigned by the town treasurer and the town chairperson, pursuant to s. 66.0607, Wis. Stat. The treasurer shall then mail or deliver the completed checks to the appropriate parties. At least monthly, the town clerk shall file with the town board a written list of claims approved pursuant to this ordinance. The list shall include the date paid, name of claimant, and amount. Used book sale set at Demmer

The Friends of Demmer Library will hold its monthly used book sale Saturday, Nov. 26, from 9 a.m. to noon in the lower level of the library. The holiday sale will feature bargains on selected romance novels, large print hardbacks and childrens books, which will be sold 10 for $1. Harvest Dinner planned Nov. 19

The Womens Fellowship of the Three Lakes Union Congregational United Church of Christ will hold its annual Harvest Dinner Nov. 19 at the church. The menu will consist of turkey (both white and dark meat) with all the trimmings, roll, pie and a beverage. The cost will be $9 for adults and $4 for children ages 3 to 11. Festival of Lights set at Cy Williams

The Three Lakes Area Chamber of Commerce and Welcome Center and the Business Chain will host the Festival of Lights Friday, Nov. 25, at Cy Williams Park. New this year will be an old-fashioned lighting ceremony of a natural 45-foot tree. Youths can take wish lists, as Santa and Mrs. Claus will arrive by fire truck at 5:15 p.m. The countdown to the lighting will begin at 5:30 p.m. The event will feature free coffee, hot chocolate and cookies. School District honors veterans

Phelps School District celebrated Veterans Day last Friday with a program that included keynote speaker Sigurd Hjemvick and the presentation of colors by American Legion Post 548 and Auxiliary. Under the direction of music instructor Karen Bouma, the sixth- through 12th-grade choir sang The Star-Spangled Banner, the handbell choir played America the Beautiful, Phelps student Emma Korinek sang The Battle Hymn of the Republic, and student Jackie Samuelson played taps. Afterward, veterans and community members were invited to have lunch with school faculty and students. The Veterans Day program was organized by Phelps teacher Alex Sjogren.

After the service, Phelps kindergarten student Paul Myszka thanked veteran George Schofield with a handshake.

Historical museum to feature vintage telephone display

The Phelps Historical Museum has announced it will feature a temporary display of vintage telephones, which will be shown Fridays and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. through Jan. 1, 2012. The phones on display will range from the first wallmounted phone put into circulation after Alexander Graham Bells invention in 1876 through the current-day cell phone. Northwoods Childrens Museum loaned the display to the Phelps Historical Museum temporarily. The phones will eventually be used in the childrens museum. Bob Paquet and Ed Weise are working on the vintage telephones. Paquet, whose career spanned 43 years, began working with Michigan Bell and eventually retired from Rhinelander Telephone Co. Weise began his 30-year career in the industry with Illinois Bell. He then worked with Wisconsin Telephone Co. until his retirement. Phelps chamber announces 2012 board of directors

The Phelps Chamber of Commerce recently announced its 2012 board of directors at its annual meeting at Sunrise Lodge. After dinner and guest presentations, elections were held for the four board openings. Marti Primich was re-elected president, Debbie Vold was elected treasurer and Shelly Ray and Colin Crawford were elected and appointed as board members. Of the existing members not up for re-election, Tuckey Requa is vice president, Jeanne Brown is secretary and John Huza is a board member. In addition to the elections, the chamber held a vote on pictures submitted by local photographers for new winter banners. Three pictures from local photographer and newly appointed board member Ray were selected. Womans club announces Christmas Fest raffle winners

The Plum Lake Womans Club reported that its Christmas Fest was a huge success this year. Drawings were held for several raffles. The raffle winners and their prizes were Geri Shambo of St. Germain, filled basket; Helen Froelich of Sayner, lighted wreath; and Mary Ashauer of Lac du Flambeau, ceramic house. Club members Froelich and Arlene Dreyfus donated the raffle prizes. The big winner of the day was Jo Daniel of Sayner, who took home the Plum Lake Womans Club Block Party 7 quilt. Proceeds from the fest will be used to support town volunteer and charitable organizations. Next years fest will be held Saturday, Nov. 10. There are a few remaining Block Party 8 challenge packets available for $10 each at the Plum Lake Library, Karens Quilt Corner in Eagle River or Traditions in Sayner. A purse class will be taught by members Jan DeWitt and Marilyn Misina Friday, Nov. 18, from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. at the Plum Lake Town Hall. The board will review the 2012 budget and the impact donations by community organizations have on the upcoming budget. Local organizations that have made recent contributions are St. Germain Lions Club, Sayner-St. Germain Fish & Wildlife Club, St. Germain PrimeTimers, St. Germain Womens Service Club and the Plum Lake Womans Club. Funding from the Lions Club will be used for largeprint titles and audiobooks. Fish & Wildlife Club funding is set aside for North Woods nature and Wisconsin titles. Donations from the St. Germain Womens Service Club and the Plum Lake Womans Club will be used for childrens materials, programs, and quilting and craft resources. The PrimeTimers donation has been earmarked for the elevator/lift project that will provide accessibility to the basement area of the library. The library has a copy of the book A Camp on Plum Lake: The All American World of the Oldest Summer Camp West of the Alleghenies, by Tim Bachmann. The book is a pictorial history of Camp Highlands, the boys camp on Plum Lake, from 1904-59. It includes information about Warwich Woods, the former girls camp on Plum Lake, and life on the three islands on Plum Lake. The book is available for inlibrary viewing only.

Land O Lakes announces Santa weekend activities

Land O Lakes will begin the holiday season with its Santa Comes to Town Celebration. The annual event will be held Thanksgiving weekend, Friday and Saturday, Nov. 25 and 26. Participants can join the elves at Land O Lakes Public Library Friday for a Christmas program presented by Karen and her helpers from 11 a.m. to noon. Following the program, Santa Claus will fly to Land O Lakes Airport in a small private plane. Attendees should plan to be at the airport before 1 p.m. to greet Santa when he lands. A horse-drawn wagon ride will wait at the airport to take Santa and everyone else to the town Christmas tree, on the lot located across from the library on Highway B which is the Santa Village. Santa will perform the 1:15 p.m. tree-lighting ceremony, which will be followed by cookies, hot chocolate, visits with Santa, Christmas caroling and horse-drawn wagon rides throughout the afternoon. Santas elves will have gift bags for the children. Saturdays events will include Breakfast with Santa at Gateway Lodge Restaurant from 8 to 11 a.m. Reservations for the breakfast may be made but are not required. Church to hold service Nov. 23

Hope Lutheran Church will host a Thanksgiving Festival worship service Wednesday, Nov. 23, at 5:30 p.m. at the church, located at 1756 Highway 45 N. in Land O Lakes. The churchs pastor, the Rev. Gary Albert, said the public is welcome to attend the service.

Church plans Harvest Dinner

The Outreach Committee at Ely Memorial United Church of Christ in Land O Lakes has planned its annual Harvest Dinner Sunday, Nov. 20, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the church. The menu will feature a festive gourmet meal of Hungarian venison goulash, spaetzle, sauerkraut, cranberry sauce, dinner rolls, beverages and assorted desserts. Carryouts also will be available.
