PLEASE INDICATE BELOW WHICH ENDEAVOUR AWARD YOU ARE APPLYING FOR e.g. (Endeavour Research Fellowship.) Name of Award 2012 - Endeavour Postgraduate Award (PhD) What type of study/activity do you want to undertake: DCD - PhD by Research Proposed Field of Study/Research Chemical Engineering Proposed Host Institution/Organisation 1. Curtin University (Curtin): WA 2. 3. Proposed Host Country Australia Home Institution or Organisation Mehran University College of Engineering and Technology Home Institution or Organisation Country Pakistan Proposed Start Date 01/03/2012 Summary of Proposal This would involve developing test rig consisting of Multi-fuel Combustor (MFC) reactor equipped with all the required accessories/analyzers having the ability to conduct experiments under different operating conditions involving temperature, pressure change and different ratio of feed (coal and biomass). Co-gasification involves emission of small particles (fly ash) which need to be captured using cyclone or barrier filter (depending upon particle size range), may be of consideration. In Proposed work the feedstock/fuel and ash samples of low rank coal (lignite) blended with agricultural residues produced in fluidized bed facility would be characterized by mineralogical, chemical and morphological analysis methods. Studies have been done on examination of such processes by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray diffraction (EDX) etc. Chemical composition of resulted deposits and emissivity would be measured by FTIR emission spectroscopy. Online analysis of synthetic gas would be carried out along with sample for laboratory analysis. ASTM standards would be My interest towards the utilization of renewable alternatives of fossil fuels was developed during undergraduate studies where I choose final year design project titled, Energy recovery from municipal solid waste. I continued working in this area and did my masters in Environmental and Energy Engineering. Pakistan have large coal reserves (195 billion tones Gt) and abundant biomass resources. But despite of all this healthy potential, skillful manpower remains the biggest challenge. I think this is high time for the development of the processing dealing with clean power generation from these indigenous resources. These will not only fulfill the energy demand but also will be a step forward for green society. I am very much interested to investigate an effective gasification process for the co-utilization of coal & biomass. Proposed End Date 01/03/2016

I serve an academic institution in my country. I have chosen this career to enhance my skills as professional researcher and getting PhD is the first step towards my goals. I have strong academic background. I was awarded with Scholarship for masters studies from my home institute tenable at university of Sheffield. I got distinction in MSc Environmental & Energy Engineering and was ranked in top 5, in a total class number of 41. My MSc. Thesis was Small Scale Production of Biodiesel from Waste Cooking Oils. After my MSc degree, I got actively involved in a research group named Biomass conversion Research centre (BCRC) in my institute. I have presented two international conference papers one of them is accepted for international journals publication in the field of renewable energy. I am in continuous contact with my proposed supervisor. We have discussed the potential project and were mutually agreed. Having masters degree from international institute makes me more compatible. After my PhD, I plan to return to my country and serve as a researcher. My aim is to establish myself as professional researcher and do research which would be globally effective.
