Proposed Host Country Australia Home Institution or Organisation Mehran University College of Engineering and Technology Home Institution or Organisation Country Pakistan Proposed Start Date 01/03/2012 Summary of Proposal This would involve developing test rig consisting of Multi-fuel Combustor (MFC) reactor equipped with all the required accessories/analyzers having the ability to conduct experiments under different operating conditions involving temperature, pressure change and different ratio of feed (coal and biomass). Co-gasification involves emission of small particles (fly ash) which need to be captured using cyclone or barrier filter (depending upon particle size range), may be of consideration. In Proposed work the feedstock/fuel and ash samples of low rank coal (lignite) blended with agricultural residues produced in fluidized bed facility would be characterized by mineralogical, chemical and morphological analysis methods. Studies have been done on examination of such processes by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray diffraction (EDX) etc. Chemical composition of resulted deposits and emissivity would be measured by FTIR emission spectroscopy. Online analysis of synthetic gas would be carried out along with sample for laboratory analysis. ASTM standards would be My interest towards the utilization of renewable alternatives of fossil fuels was developed during undergraduate studies where I choose final year design project titled, Energy recovery from municipal solid waste. I continued working in this area and did my masters in Environmental and Energy Engineering. Pakistan have large coal reserves (195 billion tones Gt) and abundant biomass resources. But despite of all this healthy potential, skillful manpower remains the biggest challenge. I think this is high time for the development of the processing dealing with clean power generation from these indigenous resources. These will not only fulfill the energy demand but also will be a step forward for green society. I am very much interested to investigate an effective gasification process for the co-utilization of coal & biomass. Proposed End Date 01/03/2016

Program Supporting Statement

Please provide details of your proposed study, research or professional development, including the personal and professional benefits you expect to gain from your Endeavour Award. The purpose of this study is to investigate the thermal behavior of fluidized bed when utilizing agricultural biomass materials as co-fuel substituting lignite, determine the slagging/fouling, and bed agglomeration tendency of these, at conditions relevant to the fluidized bed combustion under varying parameters and varying bed materials. The study will provide a clear understanding of the influence of different minerals in low rank coal & biomass on combustion processes, as well as in the evaluation of the co-firing applications of fuels for power production. Fuel combinations on commercial scale with undesired characteristics will be avoided by using the data attained from the influence of the mixtures on the properties of the final ash materials. I am very much interested to investigate an effective gasification process for the co-utilization of coal & biomass for district heating and electricity generation.Endeavor Award will help me in further enhancing and streamline my research ability. With a strong background of chemical engineering and specialization in environmental engineering, I am determined to pursue doctorial studies in this area, not only to add value in my academic performance as a teacher but to serve my country in a better way as a researcher. Please provide details of how your proposed study, research or professional development will benefit your home and host countries, including potential for ongoing linkages. The study will help in utilizing the large coal reserves (195 billion tones Gt) in Pakistan for sustainable development of the countrys energy resources. In addition to that, being an agricultural country, Pakistan produces copious amounts of biomass in the form of crop residue and animal waste, such as baggase, risk husk and animal dung. Currently major portion of this energy source is utilized in conventional inefficient domestic heating. . These resources, if properly exploited, can bring down countrys energy gap. The study will address the Technical Problems, like high percentage of sulfur and ash in coal needs to be addressed. Similarly, plans of collection, proper handling and combustion/ gasification of biomass are yet studied. This is high time for the development of the processing dealing with clean power generation from these indigenous resources. These will not only fulfill the energy demand but also will be a step forward for green society. On the completion of my doctorial studies, I will liaise between COMSATS and CURTIN to establish research collaboration. The host country being rich in coal and biomass reserves will be equally benefitted from the newly developed process. Please provide details of your participation in community service activities outside of your regular studies and/or employment that provides a benefit to your nation and/or your community. During Pakistan earthquake 2005 and flood 2010, i actively partcipitaed in funds raising. Being the permanent resident of Muzaffarbad (the most effected area of earth quake 2005), i remained there for a month and helped the victims.

I serve an academic institution in my country. I have chosen this career to enhance my skills as professional researcher and getting PhD is the first step towards my goals. I have strong academic background. I was awarded with Scholarship for masters studies from my home institute tenable at university of Sheffield. I got distinction in MSc Environmental & Energy Engineering and was ranked in top 5, in a total class number of 41. My MSc. Thesis was Small Scale Production of Biodiesel from Waste Cooking Oils. After my MSc degree, I got actively involved in a research group named Biomass conversion Research centre (BCRC) in my institute. I have presented two international conference papers one of them is accepted for international journals publication in the field of renewable energy. I am in continuous contact with my proposed supervisor. We have discussed the potential project and were mutually agreed. Having masters degree from international institute makes me more compatible. After my PhD, I plan to return to my country and serve as a researcher. My aim is to establish myself as professional researcher and do research which would be globally effective.
