What is a Microsoft Word?
MicrosoIt Word or MS Word is a word processor designed by MicrosoIt. It was Iirst released in 1983 under the
name Multi-Tool Word Ior Xenix systems. It is a component oI the MicrosoIt OIIice soItware system; it is also
sold as a standalone product and included in MicrosoIt Works Suite. The current versions are MicrosoIt OIIice
Word 2010 Ior Windows and MicrosoIt OIIice Word 2011 Ior Mac.

Home
This is the tab that has almost everything you need when completing a word document. You can change your
Iont, Iont size, paragraph orientation, add bullets, etc.

Insert
The Insert Tab allows users to add a table, clip art, or chart to a document. Anything that is an additional
graphic "insert" will most likely be Iound here.

Page Layout
The Page Layout tab provides options Ior page orientation, size, columns, borders, page color, etc.

References
Add an index or bibliography page here.

Mailings
Create Address labels and type Ior envelopes.

Review
Review your document beIore you print it. Check spelling and the thesaurus Ior help.

View
View your document at 50 or 150 or in diIIerent layouts.


1. The Title bar gives the name oI the document and the program being used

2. On the right side oI the Title bar are three buttons.
a. The Minimize button makes the window disappear Irom the screen without closing
the program. You can bring the window back by clicking on its button on the Task
bar at the bottom oI the screen.
b. The Reduce/Maximize button makes the window smaller or takes it back to Iull size.
c. The Close button closes the document or program.

3. The Menu bar oIIers dropdown menus Ior things you do in MicrosoIt Word.

4. The Toolbars display icons that perIorm speciIic tasks when clicked. OIten the toolbar icon perIorms the
task without oIIering any options.

5. The Rulers display the tabs, indents, margins and give the user a visual guide Ior alignment.
a. Tabs are set on the ruler by clicking the spot on the ruler where you want to the tab to
start. DiIIerent Tab settings can be used to align text, decimals and indents.
b. Indents and margins can be set with the handles.

6. The Document display window is where the current document is visible.

7. The Scroll bars allow the user to move up and down the document in the window.

8. The Status bar shows the location oI the cursor, number oI pages and includes advanced toolbar options.

9. The Task bar displays buttons Ior Open programs or documents. Clicking on a button on the taskbar, brings
that program into view. The current program button looks indented.

What are the uses of MS Word?
Microsoft Word is an eIIective tool Ior creating all kinds oI documents like letters, memos, reports, term
papers, and typesetting novels and magazines, etc.
Microsoft Word oIIers you specialized tools Ior Iormatting your document in various ways; perIorm
spelling and grammar check to produce standard and error-Iree documents; in-built thesaurus Ior Iinding
appropriate synonyms to replace repetitive words/phrases; word count Ieature Ior a statistical report oI your
document; drawing and graphics editing tools to add a touch oI graphics or images to go with your
documents; sounds and video handling tools to add multimedia Ieature to a document; numerous wizards
and tools Ior creating and distributing merged Iaxes, Iorm letters, labels and envelopes, etc.
Microsoft Word is highly useIul Ior creating text oI large volume.
You can easily create and maintain mailing lists, create personalized documents and create newsletters in
Word.
It also helps you send documents to a group oI people Ior Ieedback.
Word provides customized assistance in many ways.
With Word, you can import Iiles or objects Irom other programs and use them in your documents.
Word also oIIers Iacilities Ior exporting documents to other packages, e.g. Lotus Notes, WordPerIect, etc.
