Mission Statement
To increase the intellectual depth of the Nation by collecting, preserving, and nourishing the heritage, culture, language, literature and the archaeological & anthropological artefacts of the Liberation War and contemporary period.

Impact of Strategic Objectives on Poverty Reduction and Womens Advancement
Increasing the Nations intellectual depth through the promotion and development of native culture Impact on Poverty Reduction: To promote local culture, cultural academies are being established and expanded at the district and upazila levels. Also, local culture is being preserved, expanded and, cultural and economic activities are being run under the Bangladesh Folk Arts and Crafts Foundation. As a result a large number of poor men and women are getting opportunities to learn and practice culture and arts. Construction, renovation and development of cultural centers are creating employment opportunities for the poor. Impact on Womens Advancement: A large number of poor men and women are getting opportunities to learn and practice culture and arts at cultural centres at the district and upazila levels as these are being established, preserved and expanded. Development programs for local culture are being undertaken by the Bangladesh Folk Arts and Crafts Foundation. These are helping the women to enrich their cultural life.

Increasing the Nations intellectual depth through upholding age old heritage, history, religious beliefs and spirits Impact on Poverty Reduction: Various activities have been undertaken and implemented to protect and preserve archaeological sites and monuments in order to attract tourists. These efforts are providing the poor with financial benefits by creating earning opportunities. Impact on Womens Advancement: There is no direct impact.

Increasing the Nations intellectual depth by promoting reading habits among the people Impact on Poverty Reduction: The Department of Public Libraries is making efforts to establish, expand and develop libraries in districts and upazilas. Through building these infrastructures, employment opportunities for the poor are being created. Students and poor people are also getting free education from these libraries. Impact on Womens Advancement: Women are participating in developing the infrastructures of public and private libraries, and thus, employment opportunities for them are being created. These libraries are also used by women, adding to their intellectual capabilities.

Priority Spending Areas/Programmes


Priority Spending Areas/Programmes Establishment, expansion and development of libraries New libraries will be established and the existing libraries will be modernized at the district and upazila levels to expand reading habits and learning opportunities for the mass. In addition, modern and standard reference centres for students and researchers are also needed. Therefore, this sector has been given the top priority. Strategic Objectives Promoting reading habits among the people

2. Promotion of native arts and culture Events at the national and international levels, trainings and workshops will be arranged. These will make the cultural arena dynamic and ensure development and promotion of arts and culture. 3. Preservation of history, heritage and the native culture Expert reports will be published to identify and preserve all archaeological sites, surveys will be conducted to assess cultural assets, and trainings will be arranged. Also museums will be established at the archaeological sites, existing museums will be developed with focus on regions. Therefore, this sector has been given priority. Preservation and development of Bangla and Tribal languages: Priority has been given to celebrate International Mother Language Day on 21 February for upholding the spirit of the Language Movement; to award Ekushe Podok for significant contributions in the fields of arts, literature and society. Priority has also been given to create opportunities for conducting research on the local dialects as well as other related languages in the development of Bangla. Copyright protection for creative works: For the protection and expansion of creative works, attempts will be made to establish a network of copyright protection in all divisional headquarters by enacting the Copyright Act, 2000 and expanding the jurisdiction of the copyright office established under this Act. Priority has been given to organize seminars and training programs regularly to build awareness about international contracts.

Secretariat
Recent Achievements: The programme to celebrate the 150 birth anniversary of Rabindranath Tagore has been undertaken. Every year Ekushe Podok is awarded and International Mother Language Day on 21 February is celebrated. Also birth and death anniversaries of Nazrul, Michael Madhusudan, Lalon Shah, Jashimuddin were observed and carnivals were arranged. Cultural exchanges were performed through the cultural exchange programs - our cultural teams went abroad and foreign cultural missions visited Bangladesh. Also, the Copyright Act 2009 and the Anthropological Races Cultural Institute Act 2010 have been enacted. Department of Archaeology
Recent Achievements: At the time of excavations at Monirampur, in the Jessore district in 2007-08, debris st nd of the foundation of a Jain temple, assumed to be built between the 1 and 2 century was found. 14 excavations were undertaken at the site of Lalbagh Fort. During those excavations, objects found were: debris of earthen lid, lamps, terracotta slabs, terracotta tiles, rusted iron balls. During 2008-09, from the south side of the tomb at the Mahasthan Gar a brick soling road and debris of a temple of the Gupta era were found. Apart from these, a statue of meditated Buddha made of soft rock and two bronze statues were found from the Shalbon Bihar of Comilla. During 2010-11 at Monirampur of Jessore district, broken st nd parts of stone statues of 1 and 2 century and various other artefacts were found. Excavations of Lalbagh fort revealed the existence of pre-Moghul habitation. At the site of Bhudist Monastery at Paharpur parts of earthen wares, debris of terracotta slabs, stone balls and at Mohasthan Gar of Bogra brick soling road, debris of a temple, a stone statue of meditated Buddha and two bronze statues were found. Directorate of Archives and Libraries


Recent Achievements: The National Archives building has been built. One laboratory has been established for the collection and preservation of rare records in scientific methods. Arrangement has been made in that lab to preserve the records digitally. Digital photo-copy machines and a map copier have been installed to provide reference services to readers and researchers. Recently, 40,000 documents/records have been collected and have been kept in CDs after scanning. The bibliography of 2009-10 has been completed. Due to introduction of ISBN number, the National Library is now able to collect new publications regularly.

Recent Achievements: During the last three years, by establishing public libraries at the district level, around 13.4 million readers were given reading and reference facilities. Bangladesh Shilpokala Academy


Recent achievements: At the 14 Biennial Asian Fine Arts Exhibition Bangladesh-2010, 271 fine arts of 150 artists from 27 countries were displayed. During the 17th Young Artists Exhibition in 2010, 177 fine arts of 156 artists were displayed. 900 artists received higher trainings on music, dance, drama, musical instruments and recitation in workshops at the Shilpokala Academy and the district Shilpokala Academies. At the Folk Drama Week Festival at Shilpokala Academy 60 Folk Dance Groups from far- flung areas of the country took part and 6 prominent Folk Dance Artists and researchers were honoured.

Nazrul Institute
Recent achievements: During the last three years, the Nazrul Institute has published 32 books, 4 books on Nazruls songs, one Nazruls work translated into English and 3 research papers, and published 6 research books on Nazrul in Bangla. Among these publications Rag Darshan in Nazrul Sangieet, The Nazrul Songs Omnibus and the Britisj Raj and the rebel poet Nazrul have played a very significant role in introducing Nazrul to other countries. Besides these, 1250 songs, dramas, short Dramas, recitations have been transferred to CDs for future research. So far, 147 students received training on Nazruls songs and recitations. During the last three years, to spread the practice of Nazruls songs using correct lyrics and tune, Nazruls Music Authenticity Council authenticated musical notations of 38 songs in 19 meetings and published those in books. Recent Achievements: During the last three years, 3.90 million visitors entered the Museum. During the same period, nine competitions on hand writing and painting were arranged. Three new galleries and 4 foreign (Korean, Iranian, Swiss and Chinese) corners were installed. Also, 6 special displays were organized and 2 books and 4 catalogues were published. During last three years 153 mementos were collected. Recently at gallery no 38, 39, 40, the correct history of our Freedom Fight has been depicted. Bangladesh Folk Arts and Crafts Foundation


Recent achievements: Due to the implementation of various development activities, the number of visitors to the Bangladesh Folk Arts and Crafts Foundation has increased to a great extent. During 2009-10, a total of 6,66,900 people visited the Foundation. Three craftsmen have been selected for medals. The development work of quarters for third class staff , public toilets, land development and parking space has been completed. Recently, the Foundation has published 3 books. Recent achievements: These institutes are working hard to project the Old and rich cultural heritage of tribal people. Tasks undertaken by these institutes are- publication of books and collected works on literature; teaching of tribal languages; translating tribal manuscripts into Bangla; recording tribal songs and music. Under the Museum and Library sections of these institutes various tribal items, old coins, traditional clothes, ornaments, arts, crafts, paintings and musical instruments were collected, and burned clay monuments/models on the tribal lifestyle were constructed.
