| BIOGRAPHY
Arts; the medium I chose to express myself. Deciding to pursue in Architecture did not come as a surprise for me, given the fact that Ive been channeling my emotions in arts ever since I can remember. It started with colouring & doodling as most would as a child, which then lead to sketching, painting, writing, & even photography. Architecture was something I could see myself doing without losing my personal perspectives while making a living out of what I enjoy doing. This portfolio consists of a compilation of my works throughout my 3 year Diploma in Architectural course at ALFA College, along with some of my other artworks that Ive done.

+ Visual Communication + Basic Deisgn: Form & Spaces Residential + Architectural Studio 01: Watch Tower Compact Living Family Home- Bungalow

| VISUAL COMMUNICATION
One of the earliest & most important subjects to learn is Visual Communication. This is important as communication, in general, is essential in Architecture when it comes to presenting ones work & ideas. I have learnt that the impact of a good visual communication could produce in better understanding of a design when presenting to others as purely verbal communication may not necessarily deliver the ideas. In this class, we were taught the basics of sketching, from the right way to hold a pencil, to lineweights and hatchings for effects. Besides that, we also learnt how to draw in proportion & in the correct perspectives.

| BASIC DESIGN: Form & Spaces

The message behind Basic Design was to get a grip of Architectural design basics such as focal point, symmetry, repetition, rhythm, etc. By using cardboard boxes, 30mm x 30mm x 30mm in dimension each, different forms & spaces could be made up by rearranging & putting these cubes together. The challenge in this project was that different tasks were given at different stages. Starting by creating a form, then came in colours and textures to enhance a certain element of design such as repetition. At the end, even an imaginary site was created specially for the form created. Human figures to the correct scale were also used in this project to get a better understanding of scale & proportion, also the effect it creates in different spaces.

The Watch Tower Design Project was one of the first site related, to scale design done by the first years. In this project, students get to choose their own site, whether by the sea side, on the hills or even at camp sites, which will then determine its function of the watch tower itself. As for me, Ive chosen to design a watch tower on a hill, looking towards a scenic landscape of the nature. Materials were limited to timber/bamboo.

To further understand the ergonomics of human to its built surroundings, the Compact Living Project was to challenge and give opportunity to students to show their understanding by designing a compact home, for an individual. The form of the compact home was free to be designed, having said that, the following rooms/spaces are required in it,: Living Room, Bedroom, Kitchen, Toilet, Dining Room, & Study Area. The maximum floor area of the compact home is 12meters square.

For the final project of Year 1 design, students were given the task to design a family home, bungalow, at a specified site. The site for this project was at Lorong Maarof, Bangsar. The challenge of this project was that the site was situated on a slope, among the other existing residential bungalows. Ive chosen to designed a tropical style architecture bungalow in this project to suit the Malaysian climate, having long overhangs, North-South oriented building to minimize heat, & a large pitch roof. A green roof was also included in this design, this not only replaces the greens used to build the bungalow, but also provides extra outdoor spaces for the family.

Mobility + portability. The goal was to design a mobile shop for the chosen brand that has to be able to be pull apart and put together at various sites. Lomography is a kind of carefree photography that links colours, youth, fun & a productive hobby together. Lomography not only celebrates the randomly beautiful photographs produced, but also sells LomoCameras. Thus, the challenge was to design in relation with photography & the fun of Lomography itself.

Students were asked to choose an existing shoplot from Kelana Jaya & redesign its faade with the intention of reinventing its image in order for better business purposes. The shop that Ive chosen was Nasi Lemak Cikgu, a local restaurant, selling authentic local cuisine. Thus, my case study for this project was the traditional Malay house as it carries elements of a local and traditional feel that is suitable for the theme of this restaurant.

With the given site at Jalan Semangat, Petaling Jaya, students were required to design a car showroom for a particular brand. Bavarian Motor Works, or BMW was my choice. BMW is a German automobile, motorcycle and engine manufacturing company founded in 1916. The logo represents white propeller blades against a blue sky. It reflects the origins of BMW as a manufacturer of the military aircraft engines. BMW is also one of the first to have taken measures to reduce the impact the company has on the environment, producing hybrid/ environmental friendly vehicles. The challenge was to design a showroom that would enhance the showcase of these luxury vehicles, at the same time ensuring that the architecture translates its brand, while being sustainable.

The key to understanding what the people need in an urban area is to feel and revive an old, abandoned urban site. Although the target of this project was just to give students a minimum taste of what urban revival is about, the understanding of what is required & lacking of an urban site was fully studied under this project. The site was located at Masjid Jamek, the people around this area are mostly of working adults. Surrounded by tall office buildings, this site is in need of more greens, excitement & life other than work.

Students were required to relate this project to the previous design, which was Mobile Retreat. In this project, students were asked to design a Temporary Stage Structure for various performers at Dataran Merdeka. Thus, The materials used, Rollable Solar Panel Films, in the previous project was repeated here as to link both projects. Other materials were added such as ETFE as roof/shade & steel structures for support.

i. Urban Research Studies Students were asked to work together in a group and were required to explore and study the given site, Kampung Attap, Kuala Lumpur, in all aspects. Students were to produce a full analysis regarding the site, whether of its strength or weaknesses, its advantages or disadvantages to its citizens. This is done in order for the students to fully understand the urban development and how it affects its surroundings.

ii. New Proposed Master Plan This is the follow up to the students full analysis on the site from The Urban Research Studies. At this stage, students were expected to come up with solutions to address the issues that were found on site, and to further enhance the potential of the site. All these new proposals were developed by taking in consideration of its surrounding, as the idea of an urban development is to relate the site to its context.

The new master plan is designed to make Kampung Attap a better place to live in and to visit. This is done by keeping and enhancing its strengths, and solving its weaknesses. Individual Project -Green Art Centre The final step to this assignment is for students to each select one newly proposed building from the New Proposed Master Plan, to study deeper into the particular site and to come up with a design development, individually. This process requires students to start with their personal concept and ideas, followed by a suitable design and completed with working drawings.

Urban Revival

PROJECT GOAL:

Making art the tool to catalyze people with the environment, teaching them methods to a sustainable lifestyle. Due to the fact that sustainability is a balance between social, economy and the environment, the goal is to also promote equality amongst the community, eliminating discriminations.

CONCEPT:

Nothing, Anything; Something, Everything.

DESIGN GOAL:
To design a living example of a sustainable building, in order to further motivate and nurture the practice of ecofriendly activities. To design a place that is friendly and welcoming to the public, eliminating social hierarchy, bringing people together to appreciate sustainable art with the objective of equality. Although this building is designed with a humble approach, there is a need to design for an iconic element in order to portray its image as an art centre.

| Archustic Workshop 2010 Competition

The Solar Spine Mobile
The task was to design a mobile retreat for street performer(s), for performance, personal work space & rest. The entire structure is flexible in design and in creating various spaces. Most importantly, it may be dismantled & assembled very conveniently.

| Short Semester Group Project

A study trip was held at one of the historical towns- Georgetown, Penang.

Architectural students from ALFA were group together to come out with a full study on the town & few of its heritage

ALFA COLLEGEs Christian Fellowship (ACCF) has its monthly programmes. Programmes were planned according to each month, and every month has its own theme.

The Spin; online based shopping site. Founded by my friend & I, we speciallize in handmade items such as laptop sleeves, iPad sleeves, mobile cases, stationary cases, passport cases etc.

| POSTSCRIPT
My journey as an Architectural student so far has taught me more than I could ask for. It had definitely changed my perspectives on design; & designers. One would think that design is as simply as the designer wishes. However, it is not necessarily true as to design is to serve; the society, the surrounding & the individual. & so it applies to Architecture. In other words, studying Architecture has widen my horizon in more ways than I could imagine. A special thanks to my dedicated lecturers at ALFA for their constant teachings, advisings, encouragements & nurture my design works.
