: Enabling Student Success

Project learning places students into a practical setting where they learn collaboration, critical thinking, written and oral communication, and the values of the work ethic, while meeting state or national .content standards Role of the teacher in project learning

6 1-Essential Question

Create an authentic, engaging, open-ended question that poses a problem or situation that has meaning and relevance for the students. Use realworld subject matter that causes the students to feel that they are making an impact by answering the question.

2-Project Design

Identify standards-based activities that support the essential question, and involve the students in the project design, causing them to develop a sense of project ownership. Identify what is known about the problem and what needs to be known. Design a
3

plan to address the problem. .

3-Work Plan

Create a work breakdown of the project identifying the tasks and milestones of the project, and a timeline for completing the project components. Set benchmarks for the students to help them perceive .their time limits and better manage their time
4-Project Management

Guide students in performing the project work. Mentor the students in working collaboratively. Oversee student activities and provide structure .and feedback as necessary
5-Culminating Products

Culminating products are the presentations, papers, exhibits, or models that are completed during the project. Culminating products demonstrate a blend of knowledge and skills about a variety of topics. Often, these products are presented to audiences .outside the classroom
6-Assessment

Project learning requires a variety of assessments tied to the content standards, skills, and higherorder thinking outcomes of the project. Use multiple indicators of performance to give students with different strengths the opportunity to succeed in the .project
7-Evaluation

Schedule time at the end of the project for students to discuss, analyze and reflect on what they learned during the project. Have the students reflect on the essential question, the content they learned, and .the process and outcomes of the project

Role of the Teacher in Project Learning

Project learning encourages participatory learning and a shared experience between the teacher and their students and of equal importance, between the students and their peers .The project learning environment requires teachers to move from the front of the classroom to the center of students discussions, where they can effectively act as a learning guide .and facilitator Technology and Project Learning
Examples of Internet Research

1 Research information about a subject 2 Download useful files, software or

documents 3 Communicate with experts, students and teachers 4 Store files or website bookmarks

5 Access multimedia sources such as

videos, music and Photos
Setting Boundaries For Internet Research

When conducting projects that require Internet research, you should set boundaries for your students to guide them towards the most useful information in a timely manner. It is important to make sure your students are searching for Credible sources of information and not wasting time on sites those are invalid upon closer inspection. You should also steer your students away from websites that may be inappropriate for their age or .ability level Integrating Technology With Thinkquest Here are just some of the ways that you can use ThinkQuest Projects to incorporate technology into your learning :project
6

Participate in cross- school learning projects that facilitate cultural exchange, encouraging students to communicate using the Messages tool and interactive Message .Boards Upload and download a variety of files including documents, multimedia, images, and .video Use interactive tools such as Debates and Votes that encourage collaboration and .critical thinking Co-author WebPages to publish project work,
7

collaborate on activities and express .ideas

Teach valuable online research skills by

searching for projects by educational subjects of interest. Collaborative Online Projects
In the past collaborative multi-school, multiclassroom online projects .
The Project Learning Cycle

Project Learning Cycle Phases

Define-1
In the Define phase, project topics, outcomes, scope, links to curricula, strategies and assessment
8

approaches are considered and .documented The overall project shape, journey and goals form with sufficient definition to enable subsequent phases to proceed with clarity and .defined boundaries

Plan-2
In the Plan phase, the project is broken down into manageable pieces. Project roles are assigned and a timeline is planned for the project. You take into consideration factors that affect the timing of project activities such as limited resource availability, class schedules and holidays and adjust the plan accordingly. The plan allows you to .track progress through the project

Do-3
In the Do phase the learning project is launched and conducted with students. The products resulting from the students work are collected for assessment. Typically there is an event or
9

presentation in which the students demonstrate their final product or products. The Do phase ends with a celebration of the successful .conclusion of the project

Review-4
In the Review phase teachers and students reflect on and evaluate the recently completed learning project. Reflection and evaluation are critical in assessing the success of the project and improvements that can be made in future. Assessment and grading are also .completed during this phase

Manage-5
The Manage phase is central to all other phases in the project learning cycle. Most activities in this phase span the duration of the project. The Manage phase includes process management, preparation prior to launch, facilitation, progress monitoring, re-planning
10

.and conflict management
