edition of the WHS e-sports newsletter. I The 2012

hope you all enjoyed the 1st edition and congratulations to the Sports Prefects for getting this up and running. group will now be able to continue on with this. This year over 59% of the school has been involved in 41 sports activities. Thats over 1000 students who have participated in sports from Aerobics to Waka Ama. This was evident at the Sports Awards. Big congratulations goes out to all the awards winners. What a great event this was and was attended by more than 260 people. Some of the major awards and photos are included in this edition (see page 3 and 4). The summer codes are going well and we increased numbers here too. Best of luck to the Athletics team that is now only 4 weeks away from the NZSS Champs in Wellington. Best of luck also goes to all the Year 13 students who are moving on from WHS. I hope you continue with all your sporting activities. Have a great summer, keep active, keep fit and enjoy all the great sporting that has to facilities Wanganui offer.

HOCKEY
The 1st XI Boys Hockey team played in the First Division Rankin Cup in Invercargill during NZ Secondary School Tournament week. They are now ranked 4 th overall which is the best ever result for WHS. Congratulations to the team, coach and managers for a tremendous result. The girls hockey team played in Levin for the Kate Trolove Cup. They placed 7 th overall, an improvement on last year. Outstanding players were Kara Jurgens and Aleisha Rainey.

RUGBY
The 1st XV went to Feilding Agricultural High School to defend the Mark Ranby Trophy. The team went through undefeated on the first 2 days being convincing winners over Taradale High School (63-0), Freyberg High School (36-5), Feilding Agricultural High School (24-7) and Tawa College (10-8). The final was a closely fought contest with Tawa avenging their earlier loss to WHS coming out victors in a closely fought match. The WHS Under 15 Rugby team went down to St Pats Silverstream to contest the Lower North Island Hurricanes Tournament. After round robin play on the first two days WHS went on to the semi-final against Wainiomata High School. After 70 minutes of tough Rugby the score was tied, the final result was decided on a count back where WHS won due to greater points for and against. The plate final was between WHS and Naenae College which saw the score at half time 19 points to 8 to Naenae College. After a strong 2nd half the boys from Wanganui fought back to a tight loss 18-19. This was a very entertaining final to cap off a great tournament. Players of note were Captain, Te Atuarere Albert, Ihi Patea, Stephen Perofeta and Joe Edwards.

BASKETBALL
The Junior Boys played in New Plymouth and placed 9th in their tournament. The Senior boys placed 8th overall. Outstanding players from both squads included: Matthew Ashworth, Akira Masters, Kyran Bennett, Ihi Patea and Te Atuarere Albert. The Senior Girls played in the Lower North Island Tournament in Porirua and placed 9 th overall. Outstanding performances from Siobhan Wooding, Roimata Blackburn and Tanisha Houltham.

NETBALL
The Senior A team played in the Lower North Island Tournament and ended up 2 nd in their section. A tough crossover draw saw them play the eventual winners, going down by 7 goals (the closest margin they experienced all week). Ashley Murphy was named in the Tournament team. An outstanding achievement for a Year 11 student.

FOOTBALL
The Boys Football team was joint top of group with Burnside High School and Havelock North High School and missed out on goal difference. The girls 1st XI finished 10th from 24 teams in Tournament Week which was held in Wanganui. Led by Captain Katie Scorringe they finished the 8 competitive games with some fantastic results. The team won 4 games, drew 1 and lost 3. Notable victories came against Onslow College (1-0), Carmel (4-1), Queen Margaret (1-0) and Iona (1-0). Welcome additions to the team, adding a bit of European flair, have been Sandra Lechner and Maike Tesch from Germany.

BADMINTON
The Boys Badminton team finished 11th in the country. The Girls Badminton team finished 9th in the country. This years tournament was held in Hamilton.

The challenge was set, the cup was made and a game was organised with The Webb Alice Cup on offer. Due to the Rugby World Cup the Wanganui Rugby season was a short one and the 2nds were frustrated about this. So the 2nds challenged the 1sts to a game to be held on the last day of term 3. The 1sts, almost guaranteed a win, decided to mix up their pack, with forwards and backs swapping roles. Uniforms were found kind of - with 1sts playing in colts yellow and 2nds playing in mufti jerseys.

Kick off came and the 1sts answered with two quick tries in the first 10 minutes (conversions were missed). The 2nds replied with a try from a driving maul from a line out with 17 men on the field 1sts replied with a try by Kyran Bennett within 2 minutes of kick off against a 23 man strong 2nds team. 1sts were being killed in the ruck but somehow kept crossing the try line. Half time came with a review from the very co-operative ref who limited the 2nds numbers to just 17 on the field at any one time but by playing with mufti jerseys it was hard to count the numbers so it quickly reverted back to 20+ on the field. Second half loomed, some dodgy plays were set up by both teams out to have fun and the game recommenced. One such botched move from the 2nds turned into a 95 metre try from the firsts back line. With a stacked team the 2nds couldnt break that 1sts try line a second time while the 1sts continued to cross the 2nds. Final score 49 7 to the 1sts.

Wanganui High School has a proud tradition of rugby in its past. 2011 has proved to be no different. This year WHS rugby teams grew dramatically to 10 teams who were playing in Wanganui and in the Manawatu region. The 1st XV played in the Manawatu competition and did very well this year. They improved on their 2010 result of making the semi final, to this year winning the Premier 1b competition. The team consisted of a mixture of year levels from Year 10 to Year 13.

It was a good afternoon for the boys involved and the spectators seemed to enjoy it too. It was a great way for the Year 13s to finish off their High School rugby careers and was a good end of term send off for everyone involved. Hopefully this becomes a tradition now that a cup is on offer!

Director of Rugby /1st XV Coach How many teams does W.H.S have playing for them this year? 10 What were there results like? Great!! Being Coach of the 1st XV, what was your greatest achievement? Winning the final. What was the competition like for the teams paying for W.H.S around Wanganui? Mixed. Biggest regret throughout the season? Broken arms and legs. How does W.H.S rugby look for the future years? Great.

The Friday came along with beautiful weather to match and it was a long wait until the 3:30 kick off. Lots of banter was traded between the boys and new targets were aligned. The final bell went, the field was set and the boys kitted up, many for the last time playing for Wanganui High School. Rolling subs were organised with the ref, Glen Collins, and it was decided to play 25 minute halves.

2011 was a big year for Netball, with many girls returning from last season to play again and also many keen Yearr 9s started their Netball careers at WHS. We also went away to the Lower North Island

Secondary Schools tournament during Tournament Week in August. It was a long week and after 9 hard games we came a respectable 11th place. It was an amazing week in WellingAll the teams play in the Secondary ton with the weather holding out for the week making it easier and more enjoyable to play. Schools competition on a Saturday afternoon, starting in May and running through to September. The Senior A1s had an awesome season, with the highlight being winning the Wanganui Premier Competition. It had been a long season and all our hard work had finally paid off! The final of Prem was a nail-biter against defending champions Kaierau. We had lots of students and teachers from school come and support us. This was so up-lifting and encouraging for us out on the court. We managed to hold Kaierau out at the end, winning 49-47!!! We also won the Smith Memorial Trophy for Best All Round Team in Wanganui which was a huge achievement.

close game which they pulled away to win. The Junior A2s also had a great season, beating the Senior B2s 17-16 to win the Secondary Schools 2 Grade. The Junior E1s also won their grade, the Secondary Schools 5 Grade, beating the Junior D2s 21-11. The Junior A1s headed away to the Western Junior Tournament in Palmerston North in August. They did really well, coming 2nd overall, just losing to local school Tu Toa in the final. In this tournament Sammy Murphy made the Year 9 Tournament Team and Kelera Kurayabaki making the Year 10 Tournament Team. They also participated in the Central 6 Tournament, beating five other teams to win overall. A great year for the young team who have built steadily over the season!
