COURSE TITLE: Physics

HVS CURRICULUM MAP 2005-06

OVERVIEW
SKILLS

TEACHER: Abby Kelso

COURSE DESCRIPTION Semester 1: This semester covered three topics: Forces, Pressure, Forces Acting in Different Directions. Students investigated these topics in pairs by designing and conducting scientific investigations. In these investigations they made measurements, compiled and organized data, analyzed results, and communicated their conclusions in their notebooks and to the class. Students were encouraged to ask questions and work together. They were evaluated through labs, participation, homework, essays and tests.

Plan and conduct a scientific investigation to test a hypothesis. Evaluate accuracy and reproducibility of data. Distinguish between variable and control parameters. Construct appropriate graphs from data. Apply and manipulate simple mathematic relationships to determine a missing quantity in a mathematic expression. Distinguish between linear and nonlinear relationships on a graph of data. Recognize the slope of the linear graph as the constant in the relationship y=kx and apply this principle in interpreting graphs constructed from data. Maintain an organized lab notebook. Clearly communicate scientific information in oral and written form. Select and use appropriate tools and technology to perform tests, collect data, analyze relationships, and display data. Identify and communicate sources of unavoidable experimental error. Identify possible reasons for inconsistent results, such as sources of error or uncontrolled conditions. Formulate explanations by using logic and evidence. Recognize the usefulness and limitations of models and theories as scientific representations of reality. Recognize the issues of statistical variability and the need for controlled tests. Know that when an observation does not agree with an accepted scientific theory, the observation is sometimes mistaken or fraudulent and that the theory is sometimes wrong. Semester 2: This semester covered four topics:Waves, Heating and Cooling, Potential Energy and Kinetic Energy Distance, Time, and Speed. Students investigated these topics in pairs by designing and conducting scientific investigations. In these investigations they made measurements, compiled and organized data, analyzed results, and communicated their conclusions in their notebooks and to the class. Students were encouraged to ask questions and work together. At the end of the term students completed an independent research project and presented their results at the schools Science Fair. They were evaluated through labs, participation, homework, essays, tests, and their science fair project.
See Semester 1 Special emphasis this term was placed on students designing and conducting their own science fair project.
