SAS EMPLOYEES ATTENDANCE/PUNCTUALITY EVALUATION RESULTS

I.

RATIONALE: This survey or evaluation is conducted to develop an understanding of the impact of poor or irregular attendance and punctuality on overall attainment of a school committed to excellence. It is also important not to dwell on negative statistics around attendance. While participants need to understand the issues and potential impact, we would like to emphasize that most employees come to work regularly and on time.

II.

OBJECTIVES OF THE SURVEY: 1. To consider the effect poor attendance or punctuality can have on quality service of employees. 2. To increase understanding of how absences or poor punctuality may develop. 3. To explore good practice in attendance management.

III.

RESPONDENTS PROFILE: This survey was administered to the St. Anthony School personnel whether they incurred absences or tardiness last school year. These are faculty, non-teaching personnel and administrators. There were 64 respondents from the 85 personnel invited to share their views.

IV.

INSTRUMENTS/ TECHNIQUES UTILIZED: The main instrument used in gathering the data was the questionnaire supplied by the RPD Office in collaboration with the HRM Office.

VI.

FINDINGS ON THE SURVEY CONDUCTED: On Tardiness:

a) On Question # 12 How many times did you get late last school year 2010-2011? Out of 64 respondents 30 said they never came late but 24 respondents incurred 1-5 times tardiness while 2 respondents incurred 11- 15 times tardiness and another one said that he/she came late 16-20 times.

b) On Question # 13 What were the reasons for your tardiness last school year? 19
respondents reasoned out that it is due to the transportation they are taking, while 11 employees mentioned personal sickness as their main reason for coming late, whereas others said they come late due to traffic and their kids who move slowly even if they woke up early. c) For Question # 14 Were you given a sanction for your tardiness? 34 respondents said they were not given any sanction but 5 were given sanctions. Sanctions given for 3 respondents were oral reprimand, another 3 were given written warnings and 3 more were given written reprimand while one respondent was given a suspension. d) For Question # 16 Did the sanction given improve you punctuality? 5 respondents said yes while 3 persons said it didnt made any change at all.

On Absences:
a) On Question # 17 Did you incur absences last school year 2010-2011? 40 respondents said yes while 22 said they had a perfect attendance. Of the 35 respondents who incurred absences main reason was personal sickness, while 17 reasoned out the family members sickness for their main reason and 7 said they were absent because of family obligation . b) Because of these absences three respondents were given oral reprimand whereas the other 42 respondents didnt receive any sanction. c) As for their answer on Question # 22 Did the sanction/s given to you improve you attendance? All three respondents said that the oral reprimand surely improved their attendance.

VII.

CONCLUSION: Based on the findings cited the following conclusions are drawn:
a) Tardiness of some employees stemmed from the means of transportation they take in coming to school. 40% reasoned out congested traffic and 23% said that they were late due to personal sickness, while 6.77% mentioned that their family members and family obligations are the reasons why they arrived late. b) It was also evident that 48 % of the respondents do not come late but 38% of those who do only arrived late for 1-5 times during the year and only 1.59% incurred more than 16 times tardiness. c) Furthermore, 30% of those who came late were given oral reprimand and 30% received written warnings. There was only one who was suspended due to his/ her tardiness. d) The 65% of the respondents who came late revealed that the sanction they received improved their attendance while 38% stated that it did not make any improvement.

e) On absences, 65% of the respondents did not incur any absences while there were only 35 % who did. f) 57.38% said that the reasons for their absence were personal sickness and 28% mentioned it was due to family members sickness, while 11% said they were absent due to family obligations.

g) Of those who were not able to go to work, 100% were given only oral reprimand and the sanction made them improved their attendance. VIII. SUGGESTIONS/ RECOMMENDATIONS:
a) It was gleaned from the survey that most of our employees dont come late and those who did usually reasoned out due to the transportation they take or due to traffic. It is then recommended that to avoid the traffic respondents are advised to manage their time wisely. Maybe they could leave their place earlier to avoid the traffic. It is also suggested that they may experiment on the manner they come to work. They may take other means of transportation that will make them arrive early on their place of work. b) From the conclusions arrived at, it can also be noted that positive recognition and positive reinforcement of appropriate behavior is likely to elicit continued positive behavior and good attendance. c) Where possible, we are trying to take a solution- focused approach so much so that respondents can reflect on what is already working for them and how they want to develop this, rather than on what is not working for them. So from their answers to the question on how to improve their punctuality in reporting to school they can now ponder on how to change their outlook on achieving regular attendance. d) Since regular attendance and good punctuality are fundamental from maximizing and achieving the best from our employees it is then further recommended that an increase in the cash incentives be provided so they will be more motivated to have perfect attendance.

COMMENTS/ SUGGESTIONS FROM THE RESPONDENTS

1. How can you improve your punctuality in reporting to school? Answers:
By maintaining and balancing my time By moving quickly, waking up early and observe time management Discipline and time management. I am requesting for a nine to six time because traffic flow is really bad in commonwealth and daily traffic is unpredictable. I can improve my punctuality in reporting to school by leaving home early. I can improve my punctuality in reporting to school by being conscious with my everyday task and think of my schedules ahead... I can improve my punctuality in reporting to school by leaving the house early. I can probably improve punctuality thru time management. However, there were instances last year that the transportation (LRT) that we used had encountered technical problems. And it was the only reason for tardiness. I should remind my children to move fast always Leaving the house early Magkaroon ng pagkakaisa sa skul para ma improve ang ating skul. Make things organized...

Sleep early and wake up early. (2x) The reasons for my tardiness most of the time concerns my children, when they are sick esp my youngest who is asthmatic whom i really have to attend to and not just leave the care to the yaya or any member of the family at home. Some would be pregnancy discomforts. I just hope and pray that we all be healthy so that it may not affect my punctuality in reporting to school. Time management (2x) To wake up early and be more organized at home and at school. Use alarm clock / go to bed early / go to school early Wake up early! (5x) Waking up and preparing early for school Waking up early and exerting more effort in coming to school on time!

2. How can you improve your attendance? Answers:

Absences are still covered by sick leave. Attendance is a must. By just taking care of my health. By keeping fit and healthy. By taking care of myself I can improve my attendance by trying my best to avoid sickness as much as possible. I can probably improve my attendance by keeping myself and my family members healthy. It is only and prime reason for my absences. I should take care of myself and my family. I will absent only for emergency reason I will be conscious with all my assigned tasks...take care of myself so i will not get sick... If i will ask permission from my superior it should be written affixed with the superior's signature. If only I can avoid being sick, why be absent? Make absences only for valid reasons Prioritize important schedules Pumasok ng maaga. Regular checkups for my health Stay healthy so you can be in school regularly Take care of myself. Make a self-routine.. Balance life Take care of your health. Take good care of my health. Take vitamins to avoid illness. Taking good care of myself, always drink vitamins and avoid stress! Time management Trying to be fit and always healthy.

3. What suggestions/comments can you give to the school administration to help you improve your attendance? Answers:
Be compassionate / understanding etc.. ( case to case basis only ) Give higher incentives to those have perfect attendance Give immediate warnings to those who incur absences without valid reasons and to the regular absentees I wake up early in the morning 2 hrs before the official time.

If possible to lessen the number of loads for tenured and probationary teacher to avoid absences, this will enable them to revive their strength and vitality. Also study the number of students per class (at least maximum of 35 students) If the absences are justifiable enough just give oral reprimand or warning however, if it is habitual and no evidences are being presented (e.g. medical certificate if the person had been confine) then call the attention of that particular person and have a conversation up-close and personal because some teachers are also like students (we have some problems that bothers or affect us). Increase the award for perfect attendance. A bigger amount is a sure factor to maintain a perfect attendance.Bottom of Form It's very rare that i be absent if not really of a valid reason. There would even be times when i have to sacrifice my family (leaving behind a family member who is sick, husband or kids) and report to school. I just hope that the administration will be more understanding to their employees, take time to talk and listen to the reasons why their attendance have drastically affected their work. I've been so grateful to the administrators for giving me lots of considerations when it comes to my absences, for i believe the reasons (personal and family members' sickness) are quite valid. Other than those mentioned reasons, i guess, i really am dedicated to my work. More incentives and benefits for the Faculty and non-teaching personnel for it adds motivation not to commit tardiness and absences Pumasok ng maaga.para di ka nahuhuli sa pagpasok. Return back the Coed in grade school because most teachers are having difficulty in managing the discipline of the children especially in boys. Teachers suffer from sore throat that leads to cough and related sickness. (This is my observation) Some schools adjusted/delayed their Monday schedules to avoid heavy traffic during these days. In this way, majority of the personnel can avoid tardiness if the official time in will be adjusted. The administrators should have come up a clear policy on working time of teachers. Official time should be well communicated to everyone. Administrators may see the loading of teachers as a factor that affect the attendance of teachers. Most of the time teachers contracted different illnesses due to overloading of work. Maybe the administrators could think of ways on how to help teachers fight stress in their day to day living.
