ASSEMBLIES Assemblies this week will be led by Mrs Bonfield on the subject of Remembrance Day. Year 13 Tuesday 8th & Year 12 Thursday 10th November. INTERESTED IN STUDYING ABROAD? Amy Newnham from "Degrees Ahead" is coming in on Tuesday 29th November at 3pm to talk to any students interested in studying abroad for a degree. She will have information on all aspects of studying at universities from across the world. Please sign up for a place via the sheet on the careers board or see Julie Calder for more information. Subject-based workshops at Gonville and Caius College, University of Cambridge Applications are now open for our subject-based workshops at Gonville and Caius College, University of Cambridge. These workshops are intended to give the most able students a taste of university study at Cambridge, and will feature lectures, group work and the opportunity to meet current students and lecturers. They are intended primarily for students in Y12 who hope to apply to competitive universities, but they are also suitable for highly-motivated students in Y11. All workshops are free of charge, including lunch on the day. Friday 10 February 2012 - Uncovering the Past. Friday 17 February 2012 - New Research in the Sciences Friday 24 February 2012 - Technology in the 21st Century Friday 2 March 2012 - Literature and Language. Interested in an Accountancy Degree? VILLIERS PARK RESIDENTIAL COURSES We have received details of the following residential courses for gifted Year 12 students:Social & Forensic Psychology, Engineering: Electronic & Computational, The Language Learners Toolkit, Mathematics: Chaos or Clear Cut? Biology: Ecology and Evolution, English Lit: Exploring Shakespeare, Law. There is a cost involved and we are limited to one student per course. Please see Sam Stingemore for details. COURSEWORK DEADLINES A level Food research coursework deadline - Wednesday 16 November MUSIC BLOG This is where important information for both Y12 and Y13 is put and students should be checking it regularly! www.simonballemusicalevel.blogspot.com EX STUDENT NEWS We have received a letter from The Master of St Catherines College Oxford informing us that Peter Ibbetson has gained a first class honours degree in Biological Sciences. April Kelley has won first prize in a script writing competition. The play, that she wrote while a student at Simon Balle, is being performed at Arts Depot in Finchley on 4th, 5th, 10th & 11th November. Many congratulations to them both. Gothic Literature Lecture at the University of Hertfordshire An exciting opportunity has arisen to attend a lecture on Gothic fiction at the University of Hertfordshire on Wednesday 23rd November 2011. This is a fantastic chance to experience English teaching at undergraduate level. It will also support the material covered in the year 13 literature course. Further details of the trip have been given to students. Yr 12 Sociology Revision Conference Thursday December 1st. We had such excellent feedback from the Yr 13 students last term that we have decided to offer the Yr 12 sociologists a similar opportunity. 10 to finance office by Friday 11th. Mrs Adshead

FIRST XI FOOTBALL County league match v Mount Grace Wednesday 2nd November. Goals from Nathan Marvel and Olly Thompson secured a 2-2 draw.

CHRISTMAS FAIR On Friday 9th December after school for a few hours, we are going to be holding a Christmas Fair in the Sixth Form Common Room which is open to the whole school. We are looking for any sixth form students who have a small business or hobby; maybe making things they can sell e.g. cakes, DVDs, computer games, art work, etc. Please see Mrs Salt if you have any ideas. Also we are looking for some more students to help us with the organisation of this ambitious event, so please also contact Mrs Salt if you think you could manage it. Thanks! HALLOWEEN CAKE SALE The cake sale was a huge success and raised 82.93. Due to a slight hiccough the money will now be donated to UNICEF. Well done to everyone involved.
