PLANNING ACTION.

By Hjh Hazrina (06P0158)

Introduction.
One of the problems that have been identified from the project is regarding the
spending behaviour of the people. From the survey done it is clear that the common
problems that the people in Brunei are facing is on overspending on luxury item and what
they do if they do not use it anymore. Based on this finding, one of the solutions is to
spend less and so one of the desirable changes that can be done is to make people spend
less through increasing the community’s awareness regarding the less fortunate.
Therefore, in doing so there are several steps that needed to be done before this change
can eventually be achieved.

Steps required to achieve the desirable change:

Step 1: Contacting Charitable Organization.

The first step is to contact any charitable organization established in Brunei in
order to find out whether there is any place or centre where the donated things can be
collected other than donation in a form of money. This is because there is not much
exposure may it being government or non-government organizations which are doing
this. In doing so, within the next two weeks I will choose one well established local
charitable organization such as the “Dana Pengiran Muda Mahkota” and try to contact the
officer in-charged as well as trying to search in the internet in order to retrieve more
information regarding the matter.

Step 2: Putting up Advertisement.

Second step that can be done to increase the community awareness regarding the
less fortunate is through advertisement since it is the most effective way to convey one’s
message to the people. Firstly, is by writing in the “Opinion Page” of Borneo Bulletin
regarding the problem. Next is to distribute flyers or putting up posters regarding the how
and where to donate starting from within the campus itself. This can be done in two

1
weeks time and the resources are from the local newspaper such as Borneo Bulletin as
well as meeting up the person in-charged or the authority asking for permission before
putting up the advertisement.

Step 3: Collecting the donation.

The next step is through donation where rather than spending on luxury items and
disposing it unnecessarily, the people can donate it to charity. There should be an
exposure on what, where, why and how to do so since not much information is available.
Therefore, the third step is to make people to donate something and then collecting and
sorting it out before sending it to the charitable organization. While dropping or donating
their belongings, at the same time it is in a hope that people will be more aware of the
less fortunate and make them realize that rather than spending a lot of money on
unnecessary things they can use their money for a good cause. For the project, the first
proposed collecting point will be within the campus itself, within the group members and
their family and relatives. This will be carried out hopefully within the next two weeks.

Step 4: Educating the people.

The last step is to educate the community by concentrating on the younger people.
This is because this age group makes up the largest consumer group in Brunei. One way
in making the young people to be more aware is by making them to help in the
community service project such as helping to collect and gather the donated things within
their immediate surrounding such as their homes and schools. By making them directly
participating in the community activities, it help these young people to better understand
the impact of their actions. For this step, several schools will be chosen and contacted
within the next two weeks in order to ask them to participate in this project.

Above mentioned are all the required steps that can be done in order to achieve
the desirable changes in solving the problem of overspending that is through increasing
the awareness of the community regarding the less fortunate. Although some of the steps
might not solve the problem directly, but it is hope that it will eventually lessen the

problem of overspending and making people more aware of the consequences of their
action.
