Outpatient Hysteroscopy Here a camera is passed into the womb under local anaesthetic to diagnose & treat minor problems such as polyps, or the womb lining can be destroyed to improve heavy periods Outpatient Colposcopy To diagnose, treat and follow up patients with abnormal cervical smears. Rapid Access We have a complete diagnostic service for gynaecological cancers that meets national targets. Emergency Gynaecology A 24 hr walk-in emergency service is provided in a dedicated assessment bay located within the gynaecology ward (H Ward). This works in close partnership with the Early Pregnancy Assessment Unit. You do not need to be referred by your GP but we ask you to see your GP first if possible and only use this service for emergencies.

An Introduction for Patients

MATERNITY UNIT
This modern department is located within the new Women and Childrens Unit opened in 2004. It is very much patient orientated with spacious and friendly surroundings. The number of women booking with us has steadily increased since opening and currently we look after 3,000 deliveries per year. We hope to achieve capacity of 3,500 over the next year or two. Maternity care is provided mainly at Ormskirk Hospital, ideally located centrally within West Lancashire with excellent access for the surrounding areas. Clinics are also held at Southport Hospital for the convenience of the local population. Services Provided Care can be provided either at the hospital or in the community and if suitable it can be led completely by midwives Complete care from early pregnancy until after your baby is born Antenatal and postnatal community care Early Bird appointments for pre-booking information and advice Dedicated ultrasound service Screening for Downs Syndrome & other genetic disorders Patient education, parent craft and antenatal & aquanatal classes, tours of the unit Smoking Cessation Support Delivery at home (when appropriate) Water-birth facility 24 hour epidural service Breastfeeding support Newborn Hearing Screening Full backup of a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit Pre-pregnancy advice service Midwife allocated to Childrens Centres Interpreter Service Single rooms with en-suite (subject to availability) A fully equipped labour ward with a dedicated maternity theatre Baby Tagging & Restricted Access Systems for complete security Other Facilities Early Pregnancy Assessment Unit This is a special clinic run by highly trained staff to investigate and treat problems promptly in early pregnancy. You may be referred by your GP or directly contact the unit for advice. Pregnancy Assessment Unit Problems in later pregnancy can be managed as an outpatient avoiding unnecessary admission to the hospital. Joint Medical / Obstetric Clinic This clinic looks after women with additional medical problems such as diabetes. Fetal Medicine Clinic Providing state-of-the-art ultrasound scanning, CVS and amniocentesis. If a concern about your baby arises during pregnancy, it can be fully investigated at this clinic. Private Care Private Obstetric care, Nuchal Translucency scans and 4D-Baby scans by arrangement. Tours of the unit These are held every Saturday at 2.00 pm and last about an hour. There is no need to make an appointment but its best to call 01695 656919 just in case it is very busy.

GYNAECOLOGY
A comprehensive range of services is offered in the dedicated Gynaecology outpatient suite at Ormskirk Hospital. The staff are dedicated and friendly and the atmosphere relaxed and welcoming. Clinics are also held at Southport Hospital for general gynaecological conditions and for the investigation & treatment of urinary problems. The team of consultants provide extensive experience for all gynaecological conditions. Services Provided General Gynaecology Menopause problems Bleeding after the menopause Heavy or painful periods Family Planning including vasectomy service Pregnancy Counselling Recurrent Miscarriage Clinic Joint Dermatology/Gynaecology Clinic Dedicated gynaecology ultrasound Specialist Services Infertility Unit This provides a full range of investigations and treatments for the infertile couple. Tests for hormone levels, ovulation, fallopian tube damage and sperm counts can be performed. A full comprehensive range of treatments is available.
