Best of breed technologies

The recorder is designed from the ground-up to support the life-size, ultra high definition video streams with spatial audio by utilizing world class technologies from companies like Intel, Microsoft and Sun.

Recording mechanism
CARIN recording system is placed at the Cisco TelePresence room and the recording component of the system is connected to a monitor port or tap on the network in order to record point-to-point sessions. CARIN recorder is able to record multipoint communication as well when placing it at the Cisco TelePresence MultiPoint Switch. CARIN call recording offers the following advantages: Robust technology, applied in the industry for many years Does not rely on any additional resources or increase network traffic Optimized for high-volume traffic Does not interfere with the original call; in case of any problem with the recording engine, the call and users phone experience remains untouched and unchanged Supports multi-site configurations in a very cost effective way Extremely easy content creation by dialing in the recorder from any TelePresence room Enables real-time streaming support CARIN records Cisco TelePresence calls into a proprietary file format (Carin Media Format - CMFX), which preserves the original content. No decoding or transcoding is applied during the recording in order to provide the highest reliability for the capturing and storing the content in the highest resolution.

CARIN for Cisco TelePresence

The CARIN recording solution consists of two major components: CARIN Local Recorder high-end recording module optimized for packet based call recording with several storage management options CARIN Central Controller provides various centralized functions like: a database server, a web server, centralized management, transcoding and storage in a CARIN system The CARIN Cisco TelePresence recording system is designed to support various configuration options. In the simplest configuration the above mentioned components are installed on a single server. Due to the large amount of processing it takes to support transcoding video files into lower resolutions, it is recommended to install the Local Recorder and Central Controller on separate hardware servers so the recording service remains uninterrupted. The other key driver behind separating the system components is to provide multi-site capabilities to the recording infrastructure. A Central Controller is able to act as a central components for each Local Recorder (deployed locally in the TelePresence rooms), and provides the flexibility to grow with the needs of the enterprise.

Storage
CARIN records Cisco TelePresence calls in a proprietary media file format (CMFX) and later it allows for the transcoding of the files to the popular Windows Media Video (WMV) format. The system provides the codec for playing back CMFX files also, but in order to share the files to larger audience or the original HD resolution is not required, the WMV format can be a good choice. The transcoding parameters can be customized based on the requirements and offers a wide range of allowable resolutions and bitrates. The following table summarizes the required disk space for storing the Cisco TelePresence recording in its original (CMFX) and in transcoded (WMV) formats: Recording scenario Bandwidth on the network [Mbps]1
15 5.5

Storage disk space requirement for CMFX [GByte]

13.18 / hour 4.83 / hour

Storage disk space requirement for WMV [GByte]2

0.44 / hour 0.16 / hour

In addition to the file format management, the CARIN recording system offers archiving functions, which enable users to store media files in alternative locations or on different media, allowing files to be saved for the longer terms.

The calculations above are based on maximum bandwidth required by the Cisco TelePresence system including the auxiliary audio and video ports, burst and network layer overheads. 2 WMV transcoding profile is configurable, the calculations above based on the default profile, which is optimized for CTP3000 and CTP1000: CTP3000 settings: Video settings - resolution: 1024, bandwidth: 1 Mbps, codec: WMV V8 Audio settings - resolution: 48 KHz, Stereo, bandwidth: 63 Kbps, codec: WMA 9.2 CTP1000 settings: Video settings - resolution: 1024, bandwidth: 384 Kbps, codec: WMV V8 Audio settings - resolution: 48 KHz, Stereo, bandwidth: 63 Kbps, codec: WMA 9.2

User Interface
The CARIN system provides an intuitive and function-rich interface for everyone: from simple users, to supervisors, to system administrators. Recorded calls can be searched for and played back at any time and from any location connected to the corporate network in a secure, and audited way, by using the web based user interface. Calls can be searched for and filtered based on any data that is stored in the call detail records, like call start/end date/time, calling party number and name, called party number and name and user defined comments. The CARIN system also includes predefined search lists like My calls, Userscalls, Important Calls, etc. In addition, all types of search queries can be saved and used at a later time. The CARIN Node Manager allows centralized management of the CARIN distributed components (CCs and LRs). All management tasks (e.g. changing configuration settings, monitoring key sever and OS parameters) can be performed through the application utilizing secure communication channels (SSL).

When CARIN CC and LR components are installed on a single server, the transcoding process may overload the server and can cause recording interruption. Because of this, transcoding is not enabled during any recording. 4 The required hard disk size greatly depends on the configuration. 5 CARIN ships with Microsoft SQL 2005 Server Express Edition, which is limited to 2 millions call records and does not support high availability configurations.
