843228 Orweli Bridge - construction Van Loenen, J; Telford, S last Civ Engr Proc V74, Nov 1983, P779-804 The 1287m long Orwell Bridge over the River Orwell, Ipswich, Suffolk, UK, comprises a viaduct over dry land, a central main span and a further viaduct built over mud flats in the intertidal range. Construction details are given for the foundations and substructure: cast-in-place bored piles in chalk of variable nature, heavily reinforced concrete pile caps constructed under cover of dewatering systems or within cofferdams and two 40m high twin stalk piers. 843229 Analysis and design of a large raft foundation in Baghdad Hooper, J A last Civ Eagr Proc V74, Nov 1983, P837-869 A combined museum and monument is under construction in Baghdad, Iraq, which is, with the exception of the monument, entirely below ground level. The structural layout and applied loading are asymmetric and the circular concrete raft, overlying interbedded clay and sand strata, is 150m in diameter with a thickness varying between 1.3m and 2.3m. Results are given of a sensitivity study of computed raft behaviour based on the theory of an elastic raft in frictionless contact with the surface of a layered soil continuum. These include the effects of superstructure stiffness, flexural cracking, raft separation and local yield of the soil. The procedure used to check the raft design is also described. 843230 Behaviour of a bridge abutment foundation on Keuper marl during and after construction Marsland, A; Butcher, A P; Taffs, F H lnst Civ Eagr Proc V74, Nov 1983, P917-944 Investigations in connection with the M56 motorway, Cheshire, UK, were carried out at the site of a single span concrete bridge on reinforced concrete slab bases founded on well weathered Keuper marl. Large-diameter deep in-situ plate loading tests and pressuremeter tests gave details of bearing pressures, pore water pressures and settlements at and below foundation level during and after construction. The distribution of pressures across the base differed significantly from that estimated. Most of the settlement of the bridge foundation occurred during construction and the actual overall value of l 0mm was very close to the 11mm estimated using moduli determined from in situ tests. It was concluded that shallow mass foundations are adequate for bridge construction on weathered Keuper marl. 843231 Vibration of a homogeneous half-space of arbitrary Poisson's ratio interrupted by a frictionless plane Awojobi, A O int J Num Anal Meth Geomech VS, N1, Jan-Feb 1984, P4555 Presents an exact expression for the Hankel transform of the surface displacement of a rigid circular body performing harmonic vertical vibrations on a homogeneous elastic halfspace of arbitrary Poisson's ratio interrupted at some depth by a frictionless horizontal plane. It is established that: the Poisson's ratio effect is linear; the frictionless plane has a negligible secondary effect and surface shear modulus dominates the vibrations on elastic media. 843232 New subgrnde model applied to mat foundations Horvath, J S J Geotech Engng Div ASCE VI09, NGTI2, Dec 1983, P1567-1587 A critical summary of several commonly used methods for analysing mat foundations under static loading is presented. A new method based on Reissner's concept of a simplified elastic continuum is introduced. This new model is found to show much better agreement with exact theory of elasticity solutions than the commonly used Winkler modulus of subgrade reaction model. 843233 Modulus of subgrnde reaction: new perspective. Technical note Horvath, J S J Geotech Engng Div ASCE VI09, NGT12, Dec 1983, P1591-1596 A new method of interpreting the modulus of subgrade reaction, K, from the Winkler subgrade model is presented. This is based on the simplified continuum procedure using the theory of elasticity. The new mathematical model derived is called the Winkler-Type Simplified Continuum. 843234 Horizontal response of piles in layered soils Gazetas, G; Dobry, R J Geoteeh Engng Div ASCE VllO, NGTI, Jan 1984, P20-40 A procedure is developed for estimating the lateral dynamic stiffness and damping of flexible piles embedded in arbitrarily layered soil deposits. The pile deflection profile for a static force is determined. Material and radiation damping due to waves emanating at different depths from the pile-soil interface are taken into account. The overall equivalent damping at the top of the pile is then obtained as a function of frequency by means of a suitable energy relationship. The method is applied to study the dynamic behaviour of three different piles. 40 refs. 843235 Vertical stress formulas for triangular loading. Technical note Jarquio, R; Jarquio, V J Geotech Eagag Div ASCE VIIO, NGT1, Jan 1984, P73-78 Exact equations for a rectangular area loaded by a triangular load are derived by integrating the Boussinesq equation for a point load. The vertical stress is then derived using the principle of superposition and Steinbrenner's equations for uniform surface load. The equations are simplified and then applied to the embankment loading problem. 843236 Deformation analysis for periodically layered soil Rowe, R K; Booker, J R J Geotech Engng Div ASCE VIlO, NGT2, Feb 1984, P217230 The analysis presented is used to determine the deformation of a periodically layered half space subjected to a uniform circular applied pressure. Consideration is given to centre settlement, edge settlement and horizontal displacement at the edge. The validity of two approximate approaches which represent the deposit as a single homogeneous layer are evaluated. It is shown that these simple approaches will suffice for a wide range of conditions, and parametric solutions are provided for certain situations where simple approaches are not appropriate. 843237 Rubber bearings save St. Michael's Parkinson, J New Civ Eagr N576, 9 Feb 1984, P20-21
