Tips and insight into staying successful from local businesswomen.
Bonnie Terry understands just how hard and just how easy learning can be. The longtime Auburn residents self-started business, Bonnie Terry Learning, tackles the problems in the classroom that many kids face and teaches parents how they, too, can help their children. Ive lived just about every problem or taught just about every problem, Terry said. The mother of three has helped her children overcome problems with visual perception learning, noisy classrooms and auditory processing issues. She said shes very familiar with frustrated and tearful kids who are struggling to keep up. Terry herself had to overcome learning disabilities when she was in the third grade. As the youngest child, she said it was hard being the only one in the family who needed extra help. My self esteem was in the toilet, Terry said. Luckily my mom did what she needed to and it wasnt a problem. Terrys learning has never stopped. Whether it was coming up with games and books for her business or teaching herself new technology, Terry has continued to thrive. Ive learned how to embrace technology, Terry said. Terry said years ago using the computer was a bit of a foreign concept. Today, she has several successful YouTube videos online one has more than 100,000 views. She also conducts face-to-face lessons over the Internet with families all over the country as well as some that live in other countries. This is the way we live now, Terry said. If you want
Auburn resident Bonnie Terry has kept her business, Bonnie Terry Learning, of 20 years open by adapting to technology and making it easy and affordable for parents to use her tools and games. Terry is the Journals Businesswoman of the Year for 2011.

to survive and live in this economy, you do what you need to and you have to think how to make it affordable for parents. Terry not only has experience staying in business for 20 years, she also has her own tale of personal survival. About 10 years ago her husband of 27 years died unexpectedly. tion, he was injured on the job. He passed away five days later. The hardest thing to do was to go from the front door to the car, Terry said. It was hard get-
ting out of the house with horrific grief. Terry said her children and her business helped her survive through the fog of her grief the year or so following her husbands death. The only thing that made sense was I could work with a student, Terry said. The only thing that gave me any kind of joy was that I could help
someone. Today, Terry continues to relish in the joy of helping another. I love to hear those ah-ha moments, Terry said. Ive actually seen the bubble come out of kids heads. She added that its an even better feeling when parents share their success stories, such as their kid being named to the honor roll for the first time. When you get that kind of feedback, thats just huge, Terry said. Your heart just swells because youre so excited to make that kind of difference.

4. What is your favorite part of your job? Definitely the patients. The days when there are some difficulties about the business or we are facing a difficult situation I can go back and take care of a patient and I immediately feel better. There is a lot of gratification in helping others. We also have a wonderful staff and we want

Occupation: Owner and operator of Cruisers Car Wash.
When Jeanne Herron has a creative idea, the sky is the limit as far as implementing it now. Herron, who is the owner and operator of Cruisers Car Wash in Auburn, said she loves the autonomy of running her own business. You can take any of the natural gifts you have and you can implement them in your own business, Herron said. The former teacher and principal said that even means being able to help many worthwhile causes in the community. We say yes every time, whether its just giving them a couple car washes or a gift bas-
ket, Herron said. If you belong to a big corporate business, you wouldnt be able to just give that. You would have more control on you. In the four years since Herron and her husband, Steve, opened Cruisers, it has grown to include a certified detail shop, open seven days a week. Her children have each worked at the car wash at one point and Herron said she enjoys being able to hire a

isa Swisley was hoping to bring in new customers with a business different from Tango frozen yogurt. So she bought the burger restaurant Local Heroes, on High Street in Auburn, in February and re-opened it in March. I wanted to diversify my business a little bit here in town and I saw this as a business I saw a need for, and just wanted to bring a place to downtown that was affordable, Swisley said. We have a lot of nice restaurants. This is a little more affordable and casual. The journey to being a multiple-business owner has been a lot of work,
and comes with rewards and challenges, Swisley said. Its been crazy, a lot more than I had anticipated, she said. I guess the rewards are an additional customer that I havent seen at Tango. Challenges are just time for me and its a very different business than the yogurt shop. Swisley said it has been tough starting up a business while trying to make ends meet, but she encourages other businesswomen to keep going. I would say keep following your dreams, she said. Stick with it, keep looking for new ways to diversify your customer base. Bring people what they want.
Rachel Baxley, left, of Local Heroes, shows off a double bacon cheeseburger alongside Lisa Swisley, the restaurants owner. Swisley said her goal is to continue to make both Local Heroes and Tango frozen yogurt into gathering places.
Swisley said she is proud of what has been accomplished at Local Heroes so far. We have increased our business, she said. We
have a really good product, really good food, and are establishing our place in the community. I really want to build on our local heroes and I want to fill the walls with local heroes, from ath-
letes to military, just people who have done great things in or for our community. The businesses truly are a family affair, as Swisleys daughter and mother work at Tango and her husband, Bob, acts as her maintenance man when hes not working, Swisley said. The goal for Local Heroes and Tango are to continue to develop them into gathering places for the people of Auburn, and she is happy to be working with the people she is, Swisley said. I really appreciate the staff I have, she said. I couldnt be where I am at now if I didnt have the great people I have working for me.

WATSON: Finding ways for seniors to stay independent and in their homes is the goal
continued from page 5 envisioned growing up, but she wouldnt want to do anything else. I was pretty much in a different career plus being a mother and raising my kids, said Watson, who has lived in Auburn for 26 years. But then about 10 years ago my father was diagnosed with Alzheimers. I wish I knew then what I know now. When you are going through it, it is a long, difficult journey. It was a long, difficult journey for my entire family. As the disease progressed, Watson watched her fathers need for care accelerate. We went through all the steps: First having him do some adult day health care, then assisted
living, then skilled nursing, then hospice care, she said. Eventually he passed away. It made me realize that families need help on this journey. I felt like I learned so much. Watson knew she wanted to help families going through similar things. But at first she wasnt sure where to start. I got in touch with Candace Roeder at Seniors First, she said. I went to her, a good friend, and asked, What can I do? Roeder invited her to join the staff at Seniors First. Watson headed up the housing program to help seniors and families with placement into assisted living and care homes. From there, she went

on to become marketing director of Eskaton Lodge in Granite Bay, where she helped seniors find new homes in Eskaton. Her move to Always Best Care came shortly after she met franchise owner Doug Johnson. He had a similar background, where he had (worked in) a different career, Watson said. But when his dad had cancer and went through hos-
pice care, he saw how the people who assisted his dad were such angels. Johnson started Always Best Care in 2009 and was looking for someone to help him with the business. It just seemed like a natural thing for me to do, Watson said. As a longtime Auburn resident, (it was great) getting back into Auburn and helping him to grow his business and (assist-
ing) the seniors in the community. Always Best Cares niche is providing non-medical in-home care. That includes things from companion care, where were doing light housekeeping, helping with meal preparation and running errands to more personal care, which would include things like assistance with dressing, bathing, transferring and dementia care. Johnsons franchise in the nationwide company covers Auburn and Grass Valley, with the office in Auburn. In addition to Watson, the staff includes care coordinator Annie Mikal and 45 to 50 caregivers. The company is li-
censed and all of the caregivers receive criminal background checks and are bonded and insured by workers compensation, she said. The company also offers free assisted living placement service. For Watson, her favorite part of the job is being able to help seniors and their families come up with a solution for them to remain independent and in their own homes. So that gives the families peace of mind, she said. The Always Best Care office is moving. A grand opening at the new office will be held Nov. 1 at Creekside Plaza, 1478 Highway 49, near Luther Road.
