Hobbies: Contra dance. Terry said its similar to square dancing and participants switch partners every dance. You end up smiling all night and its a lot of fun. For more: Visit bonnieterrylearning.com or call (530) 888-7160.

Bonnie Terry understands just how hard and just how easy learning can be. The longtime Auburn residents self-started business, Bonnie Terry Learning, tackles the problems in the classroom that many kids face and teaches parents how they, too, can help their children. Ive lived just about every problem or taught just about every problem, Terry said. The mother of three has helped her children overcome problems with visual perception learning, noisy classrooms and auditory processing issues. She said shes very familiar with frustrated and tearful kids who are struggling to keep up. Terry herself had to overcome learning disabilities when she was in the third grade. As the youngest child, she said it was hard being the only one in the family who needed extra help. My self esteem was in the toilet, Terry said. Luckily my mom did what she needed to and it wasnt a problem. Terrys learning has never stopped. Whether it was coming up with games and books for her business or teaching herself new technology, Terry has continued to thrive. Ive learned how to embrace technology, Terry said. Terry said years ago using the computer was a bit of a foreign concept. Today, she has several successful YouTube videos online one has more than 100,000 views. She also conducts face-to-face lessons over the Internet with families all over the country as well as some that live in other countries. This is the way we live now, Terry said. If you want

to survive and live in this economy, you do what you need to and you have to think how to make it affordable for parents. Terry not only has experience staying in business for 20 years, she also has her own tale of personal survival. About 10 years ago her husband of 27 years died unexpectedly. tion, he was injured on the job. He passed away five days later. The hardest thing to do was to go from the front door to the car, Terry said. It was hard get-

ting out of the house with horrific grief. Terry said her children and her business helped her survive through the fog of her grief the year or so following her husbands death. The only thing that made sense was I could work with a student, Terry said. The only thing that gave me any kind of joy was that I could help

someone. Today, Terry continues to relish in the joy of helping another. I love to hear those ah-ha moments, Terry said. Ive actually seen the bubble come out of kids heads. She added that its an even better feeling when parents share their success stories, such as their kid being named to the honor roll for the first time. When you get that kind of feedback, thats just huge, Terry said. Your heart just swells because youre so excited to make that kind of difference.

Passion for patients invigorates Boeyes career

1. What are your biggest challenges and successes? Surviving as an independent practice when medicine has evolved to more of a corporate environment is a challenge we face. The biggest successes have been able to successfully manage an independent medical practice and get the rewards that come with that. Another success is that I have been able to be a professional woman, a mother and the athlete I enjoy being. 2. What advice would you give to women interested in your field? To be a nurse you need to have a caring attitude and need to be someone who is very particular about accuracy. You have a lot of responsibility, but at the same time you have to love your patients.

FIVE QUESTIONS WITH MARGIE BOEYE

Occupation: R.N. & CEO of Sierra Doctors Medical Group, Inc. Education: I have an associate of science (degree) in nursing, where I became an R.N., and then did my management training at Saint Joseph Medical Center in Burbank. I also did my mobile intensive care nurse training at Saint Joseph Medical Center through University of Southern California. Years of experience: 40. Best piece of advice I ever received: Every day is a new day.

Registered nurse Margie Boeye sits at a desk in Sierra Doctors Medical Group, Inc. in Auburn. Boeye and her husband, John, a medical doctor, opened the doors to their practice in 1984.
3. How do you balance career and family? Well, my children are grown now, but we had three small children when we first opened and it was difficult. As a mom and a professional woman you have two jobs and you have to be good at both of them.

4. What is your favorite part of your job? Definitely the patients. The days when there are some difficulties about the business or we are facing a difficult situation I can go back and take care of a patient and I immediately feel better. There is a lot of gratification in helping others. We also have a wonderful staff and we want

them to feel a part of our practice. 5. What do you do for fun? I have horses and right now I am learning dressage with a Friesian that was given to me by my husband. I have other horses besides him. I love animals and to garden. And of course, I love my grandchildren.

Local Heroes owner sees expanding business

BY BRIDGET JONES

isa Swisley was hoping to bring in new customers with a business different from Tango frozen yogurt. So she bought the burger restaurant Local Heroes, on High Street in Auburn, in February and re-opened it in March. I wanted to diversify my business a little bit here in town and I saw this as a business I saw a need for, and just wanted to bring a place to downtown that was affordable, Swisley said. We have a lot of nice restaurants. This is a little more affordable and casual. The journey to being a multiple-business owner has been a lot of work,

and comes with rewards and challenges, Swisley said. Its been crazy, a lot more than I had anticipated, she said. I guess the rewards are an additional customer that I havent seen at Tango. Challenges are just time for me and its a very different business than the yogurt shop. Swisley said it has been tough starting up a business while trying to make ends meet, but she encourages other businesswomen to keep going. I would say keep following your dreams, she said. Stick with it, keep looking for new ways to diversify your customer base. Bring people what they want.

Rachel Baxley, left, of Local Heroes, shows off a double bacon cheeseburger alongside Lisa Swisley, the restaurants owner. Swisley said her goal is to continue to make both Local Heroes and Tango frozen yogurt into gathering places.
Swisley said she is proud of what has been accomplished at Local Heroes so far. We have increased our business, she said. We

have a really good product, really good food, and are establishing our place in the community. I really want to build on our local heroes and I want to fill the walls with local heroes, from ath-

letes to military, just people who have done great things in or for our community. The businesses truly are a family affair, as Swisleys daughter and mother work at Tango and her husband, Bob, acts as her maintenance man when hes not working, Swisley said. The goal for Local Heroes and Tango are to continue to develop them into gathering places for the people of Auburn, and she is happy to be working with the people she is, Swisley said. I really appreciate the staff I have, she said. I couldnt be where I am at now if I didnt have the great people I have working for me.

a little different perspective...

My favorite thing to say about Ropers Jewelers is that I couldnt feel more connected if my own name was on the front door, and thats the truth! In the seventeen years that Ive worked for Ropers Ive seen many changes: from the price of gold to the way we market our jewelry and services, even the customers themselves. There is, however, one thing that hasnt changed in those seventeen years (or the 38 before that) and that is our attitude toward our clients and our community. One of the best parts of being part of the Ropers Jewelers family is the connection to the community that inevitably comes with the job. Its a pleasant aspect that I couldnt have dreamed of when I started down this path. As I have recently been promoted to the position of General Manager of both Ropers Jewelers locations I am experiencing that connection in new ways and I welcome the experiences that the coming years with Ropers will bring.

1. What are your biggest challenges and successes? Our biggest success at Echo Valley Ranch, Inc. is what we have accomplished in the last few years. We have taken a small mom and pop shop and built it into one of the largest feed stores in Northern California. We have employed over 30 employees consistently for over five years and will continue to do so. We are proud that our competent work force is mostly under 25 years of age with backgrounds in the agriculture industry. Since we are open seven days a week, my biggest challenge is scheduling deliveries and employees on the 10-hour days and weekends. 2. What advice would you give to women inter-

TOYOTAS & HONDAS
I hired Stacy Pedersen in August 1996 as office help/support for my fast growing auto specialty shop. Although her first assigned duties where rather simple, she was constantly asking for more assignments, all of which were always completed with amazing energy. Shortly after her first anniversary I was at the point of needing another service adviser. After talking with Stacy about the position, I asked if she was interested. Her answer being what I had expected, her old position was fill the following week and she was off and running. The thing that makes Stacy so special is that she does a job that is primarily a position that men hold in the automotive business. A person who advises you on repair and maintenance of your automotive transportation is almost always a male. Although there are always women in various positions in the automotive repair shops and in dealerships, youll be hard pressed to find one in a service adviser/manager position. Stacys daily routine, and this is just daily, consists of scheduling customer appointments in the computer, receiving customers, consulting with the technicians on needed repairs, constructing repair options with parts and labor estimates, consulting with owners about repair options, ordering needed parts, quality control of completed work, and finally delivering the completed automobile to the customer. Stacy wears many hats at my business and you will rarely find her with down time. Not only has Stacy become a Certified ASE Service Consultant, she has been able to fill the shoes in a position that usually is a mans job, she has also obtained the respect of my male customer base who now dont question her judgement on recommended repairs or maintenance. Stacy has also been well received by my female customer base by being able to explain needed repairs to them in a way they understand. Besides excelling in her job, Stacy is very active in the community. It would be strange to attend a community event and not see her there. For several years she lead our Relay For Life Team Wrenching For A Cure, she is immediate Past President of Auburn Daybreak Rotary, she attends each Chamber Of Commerce mixer, she attends the Hwy. 49 Business meetings, and the Auburn Airport Park Business Association meetings. We all begin to wonder if she has time to rest, but you can always expect to see her energy and her smile when you see her. Stacys dedication has lead to some news that not many know, she has been a Managing Partner in The Master Technicians, Inc. for the past three years. She is humble, so you may have to congratulate her. Someday she will have total control of the daily operations of this business. Stacy has accomplished MORE than just being a Woman In Business, she has become accepted in a guys job and doing not only a great job, but a fantastic job!

WATSON: Finding ways for seniors to stay independent and in their homes is the goal
continued from page 5 envisioned growing up, but she wouldnt want to do anything else. I was pretty much in a different career plus being a mother and raising my kids, said Watson, who has lived in Auburn for 26 years. But then about 10 years ago my father was diagnosed with Alzheimers. I wish I knew then what I know now. When you are going through it, it is a long, difficult journey. It was a long, difficult journey for my entire family. As the disease progressed, Watson watched her fathers need for care accelerate. We went through all the steps: First having him do some adult day health care, then assisted
living, then skilled nursing, then hospice care, she said. Eventually he passed away. It made me realize that families need help on this journey. I felt like I learned so much. Watson knew she wanted to help families going through similar things. But at first she wasnt sure where to start. I got in touch with Candace Roeder at Seniors First, she said. I went to her, a good friend, and asked, What can I do? Roeder invited her to join the staff at Seniors First. Watson headed up the housing program to help seniors and families with placement into assisted living and care homes. From there, she went

on to become marketing director of Eskaton Lodge in Granite Bay, where she helped seniors find new homes in Eskaton. Her move to Always Best Care came shortly after she met franchise owner Doug Johnson. He had a similar background, where he had (worked in) a different career, Watson said. But when his dad had cancer and went through hos-

pice care, he saw how the people who assisted his dad were such angels. Johnson started Always Best Care in 2009 and was looking for someone to help him with the business. It just seemed like a natural thing for me to do, Watson said. As a longtime Auburn resident, (it was great) getting back into Auburn and helping him to grow his business and (assist-

ing) the seniors in the community. Always Best Cares niche is providing non-medical in-home care. That includes things from companion care, where were doing light housekeeping, helping with meal preparation and running errands to more personal care, which would include things like assistance with dressing, bathing, transferring and dementia care. Johnsons franchise in the nationwide company covers Auburn and Grass Valley, with the office in Auburn. In addition to Watson, the staff includes care coordinator Annie Mikal and 45 to 50 caregivers. The company is li-

censed and all of the caregivers receive criminal background checks and are bonded and insured by workers compensation, she said. The company also offers free assisted living placement service. For Watson, her favorite part of the job is being able to help seniors and their families come up with a solution for them to remain independent and in their own homes. So that gives the families peace of mind, she said. The Always Best Care office is moving. A grand opening at the new office will be held Nov. 1 at Creekside Plaza, 1478 Highway 49, near Luther Road.

Her skill set is far beyond average for someone her age. She has taught me how to become a better listener, an absolutely essential quality especially for our seniors. I am blessed to have them both. ~Doug Johnson Owner Non-medical In-home Care and Assisted Living Placement

Bothello finds satisfaction in being a daymaker

1. What are your biggest challenges and successes? I have been successful at surrounding myself with people whose skills and abilities complement and offset mine; a lot of people have been a part of the Artistic team. It can be a challenge to find those who share the same level of passion and commitment, because they then contribute to the overall success of the Artistic team. Those with PASS-I-ON will pass on their love of this industry in how they treat their guests. I have been blessed with 47 years in this industry, and for the past 37 I have strived to give back.
