Bios and Abstracts

Presentation One Title: Common European Framework of Reference CEFR: Impact on ESOL in the UAE and the MENA Region This workshop will give an overall view of what the CEFR is and its impact on ESL learning and instruction. The workshop will also explore the CEFR banding and ranges from A1 to C2. Participants will leave workshop with CEFR materials, knowledge, and links to understanding CEFR banding. Presenter: Sandra Zaher Sandra Zaher is currently the Chair of Foundations at ACS HCT. Presentation Two Title: Getting Published Many educational institutions in the region are currently seeking local and international accreditation. As a result, they are trying to enhance the profile of their faculty by quantifying their publishing record. As well as fulfilling institutional requirements, getting published can be one of the most professionally satisfying ways for teachers and leaders to be heard and impact their communities of practice. This session will give aspiring authors some information on how to get published in TESOL Arabias conference proceedings, book publications, and Perspectives, TESOL Arabias peer-reviewed journal which is now available on EBSCOHost. EBSCOHost is an international research database which most college and university libraries around the world have subscriptions to for the purpose of academic research. Presenters will acquire some knowledge of APA format, the standard format for most research that is published in the social sciences. Presenter: Melanie Gobert Melanie Gobert, Ed.D., is the co-editor of TESOL Arabias Perspectives. She has published in TESOL Arabia publications on writing, independent learning, and assessment. Shes also published on writing, reading and vocabulary learning in the HCT (UAE) Press, Peter Lang, and Sasbadi-MELTA ELT, Malaysia. She is currently on the faculty at Abu Dhabi Mens College Presentation Three Title: Vocabulary Extensions in the Monitored Classroom Some ESP teachers find themselves in a classroom that is closely monitored. This presentation tries to help colleagues cope with the heavily watched classroom, by expanding teacher independence in her or his classroom. The methodology used was vocabulary acquisition. Lately many teachers find they must rapidly progress in vocabulary. New textbooks at the tertiary level are more aggressive in their goals. Dr. Norbert Schmitt estimates 6,000 new word families must be learned by intermediate students. This is in addition to three thousand learned as beginners.

Cloze vocabulary exercises were found effective. Used as review, the extensions were vocabulary in context. Students had to wrestle with only eight or nine word choices given for each possible selection. They worked on their handouts, reinforcing learning retention. In addition, authorities who came through the open door saw students involved. The teacher was seen as an authority, expanding knowledge. Presenter: William Schmidt William Schmidt has taught for many years, eleven in an out of a military college. Closed circuit cameras are watched by command. He found teacher value and professionalism can be maintained by TESOL connections, and by exploring new research for his or her classrooms. Presentation Four Title: The role of memory in language learning and language acquisition The presentation will look at the role of memory in language learning and language acquisition by shedding the light on some psycholinguistic approaches and on some of Krashens views on L2 learning. It will also explore exercises and activities that help the memory work well in the processes of teaching and learning. The presenter will touch upon the matter of drills and their significance and relevance in language teaching. The presentation will make room for discussion and contribution from the audience. Presenter: Micheline Habib Micheline Habib is a writer and a childrens books writer. She has recently published a phonics educational series in English. She is currently working on publishing other books that teach maths and science concepts to early years learners in addition to a phonics series in Arabic. Micheline holds a degree in English literature, Linguistics and the Methodology of Teaching. She has been an ESL/EFL trainer for 15 years. She has taught different levels at school and university.
