Student Legislative Council Meetings

SLC 69/18 October 25th, 2011 SLC passed a new Terms of Reference binding on clubs committee. The decision to enshrine these terms as an SLC resolution was made to ensure enhanced accountability regarding committee processes & actions. Council discussed the Academic Policy feedback that was compiled from responses from each faculty rep, SU survey, and Project Next data. SLC 69/17 October 18th, 2011 Susan Judd attended council to explain the Quality Money & Council Improvement Fund processes. Information I would share at Haskayne Presidents Circle on the 26th. Council discussed, and signed, the SLC accountability agreement, drafted at SLC retreat in September. SLC discussed the lack of silent study spaces on campus and the use of library spaces and facility. I requested that Tom Hickerson address council on the issue so that we may pass details on to our constituents Council approved, and I voted for, an excusal motion for one of the engineering reps so that he could write an exam. SLC 69/16 October 11th, 2011 SLC had an extended discussion regarding the SLC accountability agreement. I suggested some amendments, which were considered with the document coming back to council on the 18th. SLC 69/15 October 4th, 2011 Council approved an excusal motion for Science Rep. Jack Siu A presentation was given to council regarding technology use on campus. The University will be seeking student feedback on a number of issues including changes to the email system etc.

2. Faculty Work (and connecting with constituents) Gauntlet Interview I met with a writer with the Gauntlet who was working on an article about the new Haskayne Finance Trading Lab. I provided the writer with background, details, and contact information for other important stakeholders.

The article became the cover for the following issue of the Gauntlet. Positive press for the Haskayne School of Business.

3. Committee Work Clubs Committee (October 18th, 2011) Clubs committee approved special event funding applications for one event from AMIO and two events from FMG. I heavily supported all three applications as these events provide substantial value to Haskayne Students both in the clubs, and students at large. Haskayne Student Levy Committee Placed a call out for funding applications, with those applications coming in early in the month. These applications were passed on to the Chair of the HSLC Alexandre Ste. Marie. Met with Alexandre on the 25th to discuss the go forward The allocation meeting for the 2011-12 disbursement will be the week of November 14th. 4. Other Presidents Circle (October 26th, 2011) Discussed the structure of the Haskayne clubs organization, currently known as AMSO. Had a presentation from Brent Snider on how these structures work at other business schools. Explained Quality Money & the Campus Improvement Fund and noted that, while I have my own projects to propose, I am open to hearing of the projects of others. Outlined some of the key learnings from my consultation with club presidents regarding Academic feedback. These are far too lengthy to share here, but I would be happy to share a summary on request. Noted that the SU is looking for Student at Large members for a number of committees and encouraged club presidents to let their members know that they should apply. Followed up the meeting with a long, very detailed, email explaining many of the issues that I summarized here. Clubs Leadership SUmmit Attended the 2011 Clubs Leadership summit as both President of the Strategic Management Association and as SU Haskayne Representative. This proved a valuable opportunity to network with some business students who I had not yet had the chance to meet. Haskayne Dean Review Dr. Leonard Waverman is currently asking for a one year renewal as Dean of the Haskayne School of Business. While I do not sit on this committee, I have had the opportunity to express feedback to a number of committee members directly regarding the issue.

The committee has now made a recommendation, which is pending a decision from UofC President Dr. Elizabeth Cannon. Goals

5.

Status of October Goal (if applicable). Further engaging existing Haskayne students by taking an active role in student clubs and initiatives This was achieved this month through accepting a role as an unofficial student academic coach with the Haskayne JDC West MIS case competition team. I also worked with a number of Haskayne clubs, and attended a long Presidents Circle meeting. My goals for November are: Building Haskayne CIF & Quality Money applications o Haskayne Undergraduate Lounge o Haskayne Student Clubs Trailer Working toward a new Haskayne Levy o Partnership with CUS and support of every Haskayne club is a necessity for this to work The steps to be taken to achieve these goals are: CIF/Quality Money o Working with student partners, as well as Haskayne administration to establish cost needs and potential club/admin partnerships o Engaging CUS as a partner in the planning process New Haskayne Student Levy (NHSL) o Conducting a stakeholder analysis to ensure that the new levy reflects the needs and concerns of all students and student organizations in the Haskayne School. o Encouraging Haskayne administration to be a partner o Working with the SU to draft those needs into a Terms of Reference & a referendum question (long term)
