CUNY is undergoing arguably the largest recruitment drive, with about 800 faculty hires this year.

But it takes more than financial incentives to lure academics here. NYU is engaging in what its
president, John Sexton, describes as "cluster hiring" and helping high-profile academics in areas like
math and science put together dream teams for their departments. The strategy is paying off. So far,
NYU has hired more than 150 of 250 full-time professors as part of a five-year hiring plan for the
Faculty of Arts and Sciences. "The people we are trying to recruit understand the value of being part
of a webbed team with a common enterprise," he says.
COOPERATIVE EFFORT
To make the city even more attractive to academics from out of town, New York area universities
came together to form the Metro New York/Southern Connecticut Higher Education Recruitment
Consortium in February. The group's Web site, www.mnyscherc.org, advertises job openings at
all the campuses around town so that professors' spouses, who are often also academics, can find
jobs in the city. It's one of the rare instances of cooperation among the schools when it comes to
attracting academic talent to the region.

Credit-crisis firings spread on Wall St.

Aaron Elstein
Two months into the credit crunch of 2007, a barrage of pink slips is appearing on Wall Street as the
crisis spreads from mortgage-related units into mainstream businesses such as mergers and debt
offerings.
Only weeks after financial-sector employment in the city hit levels not seen since the technology-
stock bubble, investment banks have switched into firing mode and have halted most job searches.
Bankers in structured finance and mortgages will be hit the hardest: A third of all staffers could be
sacked in coming months as securities firms pare expenses to match the rapid decline in revenues.
"The question is, who is not laying off people?" says Gustavo Dolfino, president of The WhiteRock
Group, a Manhattan-based executive search firm that specializes in financial services.
Lehman Brothers is leading the retreat. Last month, it closed its subprime mortgage unit--California-
based BNC Mortgage--and laid off more than 2,000 employees, most of whom were based outside of
the city. Bear Stearns has eliminated 240 mortgage-related posts, and CIT Group recently said it
would cut 550 such positions.
Job losses are beginning to show up locally as well. In August, Royal Bank of Scotland sacked seven
New York staffers in its collateralized debt obligation business. Meanwhile, the co-heads of credit
trading at Citigroup were let go amid a reorganization of the unit.
Even support staffers in stable areas, such as information technology, are feeling the pinch. UBS let
go about 200 back-office employees in its wealth management division in Weehawken, N.J., shortly
before Labor Day, a spokesman confirms.
The toll is likely to mount quickly. Standard & Poor's warned recently that investment banks' revenues
could well be halved in the second half of this year.

2
Issuance of new debt instruments of all sorts fell by a third over the summer, with J.P. Morgan Chase
and Bank of America posting especially steep drops of more than 50%, according to research firm
Dealogic.
In particular, junk bond sales practically fell off a cliff, with volumes dropping 77% in August. That
same month, issuance of subprime mortgage-related securities tumbled 92%.
10,000 job losses?
As a result, at least 10,000 Wall Streeters of all stripes could lose their jobs by year's end, according
to estimates from Manhattan recruiting and consulting firm Options Group.
"The people who run the investment banks are taking hard looks, and if they decide a particular
business isn't coming back, they won't waste time before letting people go," says Raphael Soifer,
chairman of Soifer Consulting and a former securities industry analyst at Brown Brothers Harriman.
Meanwhile, firms including UBS, Merrill Lynch, Lehman and Deutsche Bank have all greatly scaled
back their searches for new employees.
"The firms we work with are shutting down work and calling off searches, and doing so across the
board," says Rik Kopelan, managing partner at recruiting firm Capstone Partnership.
A spokesman at UBS says the bank is "carefully looking at how we fill currently vacant positions" and
has recently instituted "more rigorous approval requirements."
A Merrill spokeswoman declined to comment.
Officials at Lehman and Deutsche Bank didn't respond to a request for comment.
Years of big gains
The cutbacks follow years of gains for Wall Street. Investment banks expanded their head count by
an average of 17% in the past 12 months, according to Bank of America research. Lehman and Bear
Stearns both increased staff by more than 20%. Deutsche Bank grew its staff rolls by 26%.
After the implosion of the tech bubble, Wall Street slashed 33,000 jobs in the city within a year,
according to the Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association. The extent of the cuts this
time will depend on how quickly the credit markets can recover.
2 FINANCIAL HOT SPOTS
Securities firms may be cutting back on hiring, but hedge funds and private equity firms continue to
add staffers, though the total numbers are relatively small.
"The management fees and the fact that investor money is locked up--sometimes for years--means
these firms are less exposed to the market's ups and downs," says Adam Zoia, who is managing
partner at recruiting firm Glocap Search.
Another bright spot: China.
"If you speak three words of Mandarin and two words of Cantonese and have some connection to
mainland China CFOs and a financial services background, you can write your own ticket," points out
recruiter Gustavo Dolfino. "The major investment banks are going to be doing a lot of hiring in Asia."

Mixed Signals
One of the truest and most ironic statements ever put forth is, “The only thing that’s
constant is change” which is based on Greek philosopher, Heraclitus’ “Nothing endures but
change”. This is especially applicable in the world of job search. Companies are
constantly revising, evolving, modifying their plans in every facet of business including
staffing. Therefore even though there may be mixed signals in the ether about some of
your target companies regarding hiring because of other information about their plans to
reorganize, restructure, right-size, divest, or whatever flavor of spin-word being used at the
moment; if you’ve identified the right position for you inside that organization, there’s no
reason to abandon your efforts to secure it. Just take a step back, re-evaluate your info,
and proceed with caution…
