Based on the authors' unique accounting, the New York Metropolitan Statistical Area that covers
southern New York and Northern New Jersey has nearly 620,000 technology workers. That is more
than twice the number of such workers in Silicon Valley.

By contrast, Popular Science magazine in 2005 rated New York 39th among high-tech cities.

The new study looked at more than 180 companies that rely heavily on technology. It also
recommends creating an Office of Science and Technology Enterprises within the mayor's office and
starting a "branding" effort to attract talent and financing for startups.

Russell Hancock, chief executive of Joint Venture: Silicon Valley Network, a nonprofit regional

York's high-tech sector.

"Place still matters," he said. "What's in the Silicon Valley is a critical mass, just this dense, fibrous
network of innovators, of technology people bumping into each other like molecules in a gas."

JMC Job Search Tips (Simple Things pt 60…)

Fall Search Campaign
Popular perception is that the Labor Day holiday heralds the end of summer and the
beginning of autumn or fall even though technically the new season begins this year on
September 23. That being said, it’s important to adhere to the notion that “perception is
reality” because you want to be a part of the mix when employers are hiring. This is
considered one of the prime hiring times as both organizations and job seekers are very
active. One of the principal reasons has to do with the school schedule. Once the young
ones are back formally engaged in the educational process, there’s more time available to
devote to hiring and job search activities. In other words, the workplace resumes a more
regular schedule which results in a more productive focus around these selected tasks. So
hopefully, you spent your summer, polishing up your message, your networking skills, and
your communications package that you can now put into full effect. You’ll need to because
the same rule applies to your competition, other job seekers. They now have more time to
devote to their search efforts and there will be more of them actively looking. Unlike you
however they won’t have had the added advantage of developing and honing their search
tools so the ball is firmly in your court…
