The following guidelines are supplied to enable teachers to carry out valid and
consistent assessment using this internal assessment resource.

Context/setting:
Students are asked to discuss the theoretical application of health practices for
the management of a named health condition.

Conditions:

Students provide written answers to the questions under controlled classroom


conditions.

The task is intended to be completed in 2-3 hours (either over 2-3 class periods
or as part of an examination week programme). It is a resource based
assessment which means students may have a selection of resources with them
(see following).

Resource requirements:
Students’ own resources - these resources are prepared and collected prior
to the assessment, using both classroom and homework time.

It is expected that students will compile information from a range of sources as


appropriate and as available – print resources (media articles, books, pamphlets)
electronic information sources, interviews with providers of the health practice.

See resource materials sheet and instructions for its use in the task to help
authenticate student work.

Additional information:

• In preparation for the assessment, students need to compile information


about aspects of (at least) three health practices that are currently used
in New Zealand. The standard requires at least one western/scientised
practice and one complementary/alternative medicine (CAM) OR one type
of traditional medicine (TM). The third can be from either category.
• It is acknowledged that contemporary health practices are beginning to
blend aspects of western, traditional and complementary/alternative health
practices. Students need to base their investigations on information that
represents widely or commonly held understandings about the selected
practices.
• Students will also need access to the latest documentation on CAM/TM
from the World Health Organisation www.who.int and the New Zealand
Ministry of Health www.newhealth.govt.nz/maccah.htm.
The scope of each of the health practices is highly variable, so students
will need to be directed to a manageable aspect of each eg.
• One aspect of western medicine e.g. medicinal drugs, surgery,
change of life style, psychology/psychiatry etc

• One type of traditional/cultural medicine (TM) eg. Māori, Pacific


Nation, Chinese eAnd one type of complementary/alternative (CAM)
health practice e.g. naturopathy, homeopathy etc.

To guide students in their exploration of the three health practices,


they also need to select a named health condition that could be
treated or managed with each health practice. However, it will be
important to stress that the emphasis for the achievement standard is
on the health practices, not the named condition.

For this purpose, students will need to be guided towards selecting a


health condition that provides opportunity (ie. access to enough valid
information) to discuss at least three different health practices that
could be used to manage or treat the condition, (remembering that the
health practice must be currently available in New Zealand) eg.
• A named major type of cancer.
• Infertility.
• Birthing.
• Back pain.
• Depression, stress or other mental health condition.
• Heart disease or a circulatory disorder.
• A specific dietary disorder

Student Instruction Sheet

In this assessment you will be explaining a range of health practices


currently used in New Zealand and comparing the advantages and
disadvantages of these.

Preparation:
You will not be assessed on the preparation work, however it is essential
for the completion of the assessed task.

For the purpose of this assessment, “health practices” have been divided
into 2 categories
1. Western/scientised health practices.
2. Complementary/alternative medicine (CAM) and traditional medicine
(TM).

You need to select THREE health practices in total, including at least one
western practice and one CAM or TM.

To help you answer the questions, you will also select a named health
condition that could be treated or managed by each of your selected health
practices.

Check your selection with your teacher before you proceed.


You need to compile a file of information about your 3 chosen health practices
from a variety of information sources – these need to be both general articles
abut the health practice and ones specific to the health practice as applies to
your named health condition. These resources could include:
• print resources (media articles, books, pamphlets)
• electronic information sources, and
• interviews with providers of the health practice (if feasible, appropriate and
accessible).

all the resources you used in the assessment.

This is a written assessment that you will complete under test conditions during 3
class periods. You will use your file of information compiled in previous lessons to
help you complete the assessment.

long term effects
• Societal attitudes towards the practice, its acceptability, any
challenges or controversy surrounding it and which sectors these
attitudes are coming from.
• People’s right to choose the practice.
• Whether the practice is considered as part of public health
promotion initiatives.
• Other advantages and disadvantages particular to the selected
health practices not already listed.

A perceptive comparison of the advantages and disadvantages is one that


shows understanding of health education concepts, relevant to the selected
health practices – hauora, a socio-ecological perspective attitudes and values,
and health promotion. The evidence for this will be in the way you answer
Questions (a) and (b).

NB. Your answer can be written as two separate passages for Questions (a) and
(b) or, you may choose to combine the comparison with the explanation of the
advantages and disadvantages in the same answer. Either approach is
acceptable for this question.
