SAVE THE KOALA!

Koala’s aren’t bears. They are called koala bears because the koala looks like a teddy bear.
The koala is related to the kangaroo. The koala’s young is called a cub, it drinks milk from
the mother. The koala can look cuddly but it has very sharp teeth and claws.

Koalas are white and grey. They have big ears and noses. The mother has a pouch. The
koala is a very furry animal. The koala is very small when it’s just born. After a month a
cub is 1 cm long. Only one cub is born at a time. Koalas are born in the summer. The
koala cub stays in the mother’s pouch for 5 months. It’s blind when it’s born.

Koalas live for 20 years or more. The koala can run as fast as a rabbit. They sleep for up
to 19 hours a day. The koala can only live in one place in the world- in the east of
Australia. They live and sleep in eucalyptus trees. It’s hot, light, and dry there. The koalas’
territory is getting smaller because people are cutting down trees and making farms on
them. The koala only eats eucalyptus leaves and it eats so many leaves that it smells like
the leaves. The koala hops from tree to tree and climbs trees to get the leaves. It uses its
claws to get food.

Koalas are endangered because people hunted them for their fur. Today there are 2000 to
8000 koalas in the wild. But now it’s against the law to kill the koala. The koala does not
have very many enemies.
