AIM To design, build and fly a remote controlled electric motor powered aircraft that should take off

from a runway strip, completes 2 laps between 2 check points, drop a load, and land within a specified arena. ARENA (Refer to arena layout) The aircraft is to be flight tested in an open field. The runway is of a total length of 18m and width of 2m. The qualification line is 7m from the end of the runway. The aircraft has to cross this line to qualify for the round. The track consists of 2 checkpoints; A and B, separated by a distance of 150m from each other. The distance between checkpoints A and the runway is 15m. Then there are 2 sets of pole of 3m length and 6m apart from each other. The distance between first set of pole and checkpoint B is 15m. Thereafter there is a region X of Diameter 5m (see figure) situated 20 m from the last pole. There will be a spot of 9m * 2m marked on the runway. The plane is to touch down precisely in this area. The farther the touchdown, the lesser they gained credit. To give the participants an idea of wind conditions at the venue, a windsock will be mounted in the arena. The competition will be in an open area and there might be some variations in wind conditions. RULES AND REGULATIONS Team Size: Maximum of 5 General Rules: 1. The participants are required to bring their complete kits to IIT Kharagpur. 2. A pair of receiver and transmitter (Rx and Tx) will be provided by organizers, on prior request of the participants. The Tx-Rx pair has 4 channels. It can be used to control a maximum of 3 servo motors. Participants who wish to use Rx and Tx provided by us, will have to make provision for this receiver on their aircrafts. The participants can bring their own set of receiver and transmitter if they want. 3. All teams must be present before the commencement of the event. Teams will be disqualified if they do not turn up during the slot allotted to them.

4. Maximum Team size of 5 per team. 5. The teams must adhere to the spirit of healthy competition. The teams must not damage the opponent's aircraft in any way. Judges reserve the exclusive rights to disqualify any team indulging in misbehaviour. 6. The aircraft would be checked for its safety before the commencement of the event and would be discarded if found unsafe for other participants and spectators. 7. The organizers reserve all rights to change any or all of the above rules. Change in any rule, if any, will be highlighted on the website. 8. 9. All rounds of Laws of motion will be held at IIT Kharagpur during Kshitij. Judges decisions on any matter will be considered final.

THE TASK Participant has to launch the aircraft from a specified Runway Strip: 1. The Runway is of a total length of 18m and width of 2m. There will be spot of 5m * 2m marked on the runway. 2. The aircraft should take-off from a strip. 3. Participant has to accommodate a load in the aircraft before take-off. The load to be attached and subsequently dropped by the aircraft will be a 4*4*4 cc box that would weigh about 20g. 4. After take-off aircraft has to complete 2 laps between checkpoints A and B separated apart by a distance of 150m. ( 1 lap = A B - A ) 5. Then aircraft should pass through two vertical poles of height 3m, placed 6m apart. The aircraft must pass at a height less than that of the poles. However there will be no rod or rope to indicate this level (to avoid accidents). 6. Then it has to drop a load in the dropping zone. 7. After successful dropping of the load it will take a turn and come back to landing zone. 8. A run will be considered complete if the aircraft crosses the runway strip, completes the task along the way and lands in the landing zone. 9. A perfect spot (9m * 2m) landing will be given special credits in scoring (see judging criteria). 10. The time of flight for a run is defined as the time taken by the aircraft to finish the tasks given, reach the finish line and land. 11. The timer will start from the moment the aircraft takes off and goes airborne. 12. The timer will stop only when the aircraft finally comes to a halt after landing. 13. Each team will be given 2 runs and the better of the 2 will be considered for the calculation of

points. 14. In each round, a second attempt to take-off will be allowed if the aircraft did not cross the qualification line in the first attempt and has not suffered from any major damages. No more than 2 such attempts to take-off shall be granted. 15. Once airborne, the aircraft has to cross the qualification line and stay airborne until landing. The load attached to the aircraft is to be dropped in specified regions. 16. The aircraft has to come in for landing within 5 minutes of take off. If participant fails to complete the task in 5 minutes then points will be deducted from their scores. 17. Landing should be inside the specified region for gaining points. 18. The aircraft will be judged on the basis of time of flight, accuracy in dropping, landing, weight and dimensions of the aircraft. AIRCRAFT SPECIFICATION 1. An aircraft (model) is defined as a powered aircraft if it experiences exactly 4 forces during flight, namely lift, drag and weight (due to gravity) and thrust. Note: Parachutes and Para aircrafts do not qualify as aircrafts since they do not have lift. Also airships which contain gases lighter than air are not considered as aircrafts and hence will not be allowed. 2. Although there are no constraints on size and weight of the aircraft, it is advisable to keep the wingspan less than 1.75 meter and weight less than 900 grams. 3. The aircraft should be motor powered. Use of IC (Internal combustion) engine is not allowed. 4. The voltage of the battery used should not be more than 12V. 5. It is advisable to include a good landing gear system in the design and construction phase of your aircraft. Remember, taking-off and landing are very important phases of this competition. 6. The participants are free to use any materials of their choice. However the use of Balsa wood, Styrofoam or Sun Board is advisable. Balsa wood is light and easy to handle and to fabricate, hence is a good choice. 7. Participating teams are not allowed to use any electronic system that may augment the stability and control of the aircraft, like gyroscopes in an auto-pilot. For the purposes of the competition, no electronic performance enhancement should be used. Remember, the competition is a test of the design, construction and flight performance of your aircraft. 8. Participants must make all parts of the aircrafts themselves. Usage of Ready-to-Fly (RTF) and Almost-Ready-to-Fly (ARF) kits are strictly prohibited. However, the kit comprising of unassembled cut-pieces of balsa wood is allowed since it requires skilled work to be done upon it and one can assemble it to his or her advantage. Also use of readymade actuators/motors, remote controls is allowed. Note: Any team violating the above rule will be disqualified immediately.

9. The aircraft should be a single object before its launch. However a part of aircraft is allowed to detach during the load dropping process. 10. The point where the load comes to rest finally is the point of landing. This position is considered for measuring distance of the load. LOAD SPECIFICATION 1. The load to be attached and subsequently dropped by the aircraft will be a 4*4*4 cc cube. 2. It would weigh less than 20g. JUDGING PARAMETERS: The teams will be judged on the basis of the following parameters: 1. Load Attached: A load will be considered attached if it is carried beyond a line, 10 meters ahead of the take-off strip. Points (P) will be awarded accordingly. 2. Level Flying: After takeoff aircraft must complete 2 laps between the two checkpoints A and B. Points (F) will be awarded accordingly. 3. Dive in air: After completing the 2 laps aircraft must pass through two vertical poles at a height of less than or equal to 3m. Points (A) will be awarded accordingly 4. Drop: Points will be awarded for drop (D) only if the load is dropped after clearing the height barriers. 5. Spot landing: The aircraft has to land as close as possible to the indicated landing strip irrespective of any other parameter being fulfilled or not. Points (S) will be awarded according to region of landing. 6. Time of Flight: It is the time (t) from when the aircraft goes airborne to the time when it lands and comes to a complete halt. Points (T) will be deducted for teams exceeding the flight time of 4 minutes. MARKING SCHEME: P = 40 =0 F = 40 =0 = 40 =0 On crossing line with load attached Otherwise If aircraft completes 2 laps Otherwise If Aircraft pass through the two poles at the specified height Otherwise

D S T

= 40 = 40 = 40 d = t 300 =0

For dropping the load in a specified region If aircraft lands in the specified area Here d is the dist of aircraft from the specified area of landing When t is greater than 300 secs. Otherwise

Total Score: P + F + A + D + S - T OTHER PARAMETERS: Number of aircrafts per team is not fixed. A team can field more than one aircraft. Size and weight of the aircraft is not restricted. Participant will be allowed for a maximum of 2 runs. Best of the 2 runs will be considered for the final score. The runs would not be consecutive and the participants will be given time to make any small changes to the aircraft if required. ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA: 1. The entries are restricted to the student currently pursuing education in a recognized institute. 2. The participants may be asked to furnish supporting documents at any later stage to prove the aforementioned condition. 3. Students from different colleges can form a single team. 4. Each team can contain a maximum of five participants.
