English I Honors Course Syllabus Ms.

Felton Room #105 Course Description This course will cover various forms of English communication, both oral and written. Literary analysis, genres and terminology will be studied in conjunction with the reading of plays, poetry, some short stories, novels, and classics. Students will also produce both written and oral communication. Writing will focus on constructed responses, simple five-paragraph essays, and outlining. Oral projects will include oral interpretation of literature and class discussion. The course will also include a grammar review focusing upon parts of speech and correct sentence structure. Course Objectives The students will be able to: read, comprehend, and evaluate various forms of written and spoken communication; write standard English for a variety of purposes and audiences; increase vocabulary identify parts of speech and parts of a sentence; read prose, poetry, and drama fluently; demonstrate the use of effective reading strategies to correctly interpret text; identify and analyze the use of literary elements such as character, plot, and setting, and literary devices such as figurative language and sound devices; identify the main ideas, supporting ideas, and details in non-fiction; develop a research plan and use electronic databases; use graphic organizers and outlines; deliver effective speeches; use effective methods of note-taking; use effective listening behaviors; and document sources using the MLA format Assignments This course will combine a variety of assignments such as: Summer reading project due first day of school Ongoing sustained silent reading in conjunction with journaling and literary circles Written assignments, including constructed responses, five-paragraph essays, and poetry Oral assignments, including short speeches, play readings, and poetry reading Assessments This course will combine a variety of assessments such as Digital portfolio that demonstrates the development of students work, including process reflections Projects, such as research Quizzes and tests

Required Supplies Students must bring the following supplies to every class: Pencils and pens with blue or black ink only Loose leaf notebook paper 1 binder w/ 5 dividers 1 pocket portfolios Composition Notebook Rules All school policies and rules will be observed as written in the student handbook. In addition to these policies, classroom guidelines for behavior that supports the learning of all must be observed. All who choose to remain in the classroom must Be respectful and supportive to both the teacher and classmates o No put-downs. o Listen when others speak o During class discussions, refrain from talking unless recognized by the teacher. Be Responsible. o Come to class with assignments completed. o Bring pens, pencils, paper to each and every class. o Complete any missed assignments in the appropriate window of time. Be and Active Learner: Participate. o Offer your ideas and opinions to others during discussion. o Provide positive feedback for peers. o Do your share during group tasks. Consequences Students who do not comply with school rules will receive the consequences specified in the handbook. Students who do not cooperate with the classroom guidelines for behavior will receive: One reminder One warning with a possible assignment. Conference with student and parents. Referral to the assistant principal for discipline. Policies Late Work Each assignment must be turned in at the beginning of the period on the date it is due. Those who have an absence will have their due date adjusted according to school policy. Absences due to school activities do not alter the due date. Late work will receive a deduction of points for each day late. Hall Passes

NO pass will be given during the first 15 minutes of class! Students are expected to take care of all personal needs between class periods. Any student who leaves the classroom must have a hall pass issued by the teacher.

Food and Drink Policies Food and drink purchased at school are permitted unless a problem arises. If changes to this policy need to be made I will go on class by class bases. Water in a closed container is permitted. Empty containers and wrappers must be placed in the trash before you leave. Grades Total points for assignments and the specific criteria for earning points will be communicated before each assignment. Letter grades will be assigned according to the percentage of total points earned in the following manner: A 96-100 A90-95 B+ 87-89 B 84-86 B80-83 C+ 77-79 C 74-76 C70-73 D+ 67-69 D 64-66 D60-63 *This grading scale is for your knowledge, but I do not anticipate anyone receiving any grade below a B-.
