Dear Educator, On behalf of MIT, I would like to thank you sincerely for your efforts and service through education. My staff and I read every letter sent in by teachers from across the planet, and we know for a fact that your comments are instrumental in helping us to create an amazing freshman class. You will likely have many recommendation requests sitting on your desk, and wed like to make this one as painless as possible. I ask that you complete the questions on the Evaluator Information Page and write a summative letter addressing the questions listed below. In my experience, the most helpful letters contain anecdotes and personal experiences, rather than a listing of a students achievements. I would like to encourage you to address the following questions in your summative letter: A. Describe the quality of the applicants intellect and academic work. Please comment on the students originality of thought, ability to grasp difficult concepts, and willingness to take risks, and go beyond the normal classroom experience. Please provide specific examples. B. Please comment on the applicants personality and social skills. How would you describe the applicants ability to interact with teachers? With peers? C. Please provide information regarding the applicants community, school, or background that would better place the applicants successes or challenges into context for us. D. How might you characterize this applicants resilience, or style of coping with disappointment, failure, or adversity? Please provide specific examples, when possible. E. What will you remember most about this student? If you have already drafted a letter, no worries! However, I would appreciate any MIT-specific comments you might have, which you can write in the blank space on the bottom of the Evaluator Information Page. Please be sure to include the applicants name on any attached pages, and keep a copy for your records. Again, many, many thanks for your words and your time. Best wishes,
