Abbreviation: CADD TECH 3 Effective Date: JULY 1, 2000

SUMMARY: Under general supervision, performs computer aided drafting and design (CADD) work of considerable difficulty and performs related work as required.

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES: This is the advanced working level class in the CADD Technician series. Employees use CADD software and equipment to prepare complex construction plans for structures and roadway projects or to produce complex mapping products. This class differs from CADD Technician 2 in that an incumbent of the latter performs less technical and complex CADD duties. This class differs from CADD Technician 4 in that an incumbent of the latter leads and assists in the supervision of a CADD drafting squad or supervises a small group of subordinate CADD Technicians performing mapping duties. EXAMPLES OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES 1. Prepares digital drawings and maps for counties, cities, highway route locations, and special projects with CADD equipment and programs; produces plans electronically; maintains CADD files; enters alignments, grades, structural details, and other project parameters into CADD program; sets up scanning and/or digitizing equipment; assists new employees with preparing digital drawings and maps; learns to link graphical mapping elements and attribute data for the GIS. 2. Performs calculations for construction projects; converts scales; performs geometric and trigonometric calculations that include elevations, dimensions, alignments, right-of-ways, grades, volumes, areas, lengths, and weights; calculates horizontal and vertical dimensions; locates and computes sizes of right-of-ways; performs calculations to determine map layouts, sizes, scales and linear ratios between geographic features; computes estimates of material quantities necessary to complete a job. 3. Evaluates resource data; analyses and interprets various sources of data including TRIMS, GIS, property maps, inventory data, inspection reports, ordinances, memorandums, guidelines, design notes and specifications; compiles data for CADD system; inputs data into system; conducts GPS post processing of data. 4. Designs complex digital projects incorporating principles, specifications, and accuracy standards for roadway/structures and mapping design; confers with upper level staff to determine design modifications; enters editing information into computer; produces graphic representations of design for review and approval by upper level staff.

5. Performs basic symbolization and patterning of computer generated graphic elements to properly depict the feature definition and/or type for various map features; performs mathematical calculations to determine the appropriate map layout, map size and scale, and linear ratios between various types of text, symbols, and geographic features. 6. May collect, code, prepare, enter, and perform quality control on data to be tagged and entered into spatial data layers in a GIS used in the production of mapping projects. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Education and Experience: Graduation from an accredited college or university with an associate's degree in Architectural Engineering Technology, Computer Drafting and Design, Civil Engineering Technology, Environmental Technology, or Geography. Substitution of Experience for Education: Qualifying CADD experience in topographical mapping or roadway/structural planning, design, and/or drafting may substitute for the required education to a maximum of two years (e.g., experience equivalent to one year of full-time work in one or a combination of the above listed fields may substitute for one year of the required education). OR One year of experience as a CADD Technician 2 with the State of Tennessee.
