Appendix

to the 2007 Programme Regulations for the

Master Programme in Electrical Engineering and Information Technology (ETIT)

approved by the Rector on 27 February 2008

___________________________________________________________________

1. University degrees which qualify for admission to the ETIT Master

programme without any further study requirements
(Ref: Art. 21, Para. 1, Lit. a and Art. 23 of the Programme Regulations)

Persons holding a Bachelor degree that corresponds to at least 180 ECTS

credits, or an equivalent degree in the discipline of Electrical Engineering and
Information Technology from one of the universities listed below are admitted to
the ETIT Master programme without having to fulfil any further study
requirements:
– ETH Zurich
– ETH Lausanne
– Imperial College London
– Technical University Delft
– RWTH Aachen
– Grandes Ecoles d’Ingénieurs de Paris (Paris Tech)
Other university degrees are being clarified.

2. Knowledge required to gain admission to the ETIT Master

programme (requirement profile)
(Ref: Art. 21, Para. 1, Lit. b of the Programme Regulations)

2.1 To gain admission to the ETIT Master programme, applicants must have basic
and subject-specific knowledge and practical experience that are equivalent in
content, scope and quality to the knowledge imparted during the ETH Zurich
ETIT Bachelor programme.
The scientific requirement profile defined in Item 2.3 must be fulfilled to gain
admission to the programme and serves as a guideline for applicants whose
previous education does not come under Item 1 of this Appendix.
The requirement profile is based on knowledge and practical experience
imparted during the ETH Zurich ETIT Bachelor programme and corresponds to
a total of 126 credits, i.e. 70% of the study performances required for the
corresponding Bachelor degree. This also includes the relevant methodological,
scientific way of thinking.

1
2.2 The Admissions Committee evaluates to what extent the applicants’ previous
education corresponds to the requirement profile (individual evaluation of
dossiers). Any lacking knowledge and practical experience must be
compensated for by fulfilling additional requirements. In addition, the following
also applies:
a. Admission to the ETIT Master programme is not possible, if:
1) the additional requirements amount to more than 60 credits, or
2) the additional requirements comprise more than 24 credits for Part I of
the requirement profile (basic subjects I). This restriction does not
apply for graduates from a University of Applied Sciences.
b. If the additional requirements are not completely fulfilled, admission to the
ETIT Master Programme is revoked.

2.3 The requirement profile is divided into the following three parts:

Part 1: Basic Subjects I (72 credits)

Part 1 comprises 72 credits and includesbasic knowledge of the fields of
Mathematics, Physics, Electrical Engineering and Information Technology, and
Computer Science. This knowledge constitutes the mandatory essential basis
for the Master programme. Courses previously attended by the applicants are
evaluated according to the content of the courses listed below since they impart
the basic knowledge required. The credits allocated are a benchmark for the
scope of the course(s). Information on the content of the individual courses is
listed in the course catalogue (www.courses.ethz.ch).

– Analysis II 7 credits
– Analysis III 4 credits
– Complex Analysis 5 credits
– Linear Algebra 4 credits
– Discrete Mathematics 4 credits
– Probability and Statistics 4 credits
– Physics II 7 credits
– Network and Circuits II 7 credits
– Signal and System Theory I and II 9 credits
– Fields and Components I and II 9 credits
– Two core subjects from one of the 12 credits
majors of the third year Bachelor
programme

2
Part 2: Basic Subjects II (36 credits)
Part 2 comprises 36 credits and consists of courses that mainly qualify for the
ETIT Master programme, but only partly correspond to the content of the ETIT
Bachelor programme. This concerns the basic subject courses from the first and
second year of the ETIT Bachelor programme if these courses have not already
been listed under Part I of the requirement profile.

Part 3: Major Subjects (18 credits)

Part 3 comprises 18 credits. Such courses should mainly show areas relating to
the major to be studied during the ETIT Master programme. In this respect,
courses for subjects from the different majors offered during the third year of the
ETIT Bachelor programme are considered.

3. Bachelor Degrees or Diplomas in Electrical Engineering and

Information Technology from a University of Applied Sciences
(Ref: Art. 21, Para. 1, Lit. c of the Programme Regulations)

Holders of a Bachelor degree or diploma in Electrical Engineering and

Information Technology from a University of Applied Sciences can be admitted
to the ETH Zurich ETIT Master programme under the condition that they fulfil
additional requirements to compensate for any lack of knowledge.
Graduates from a University of Applied Sciences can only fulfil the requirement
profile specified under Item 2.3 by carrying out additional requirements usually
amounting to 60 credits.
Admission to the ETIT Master programme is not possible, if the additional
requirements amount to more than 60 credits.

4. Direct enrolment for the ETIT Master programme for students of the
ETH Zurich ETIT Bachelor programme
(Ref: Art. 22, Para. 2 of the Programme Regulations)

Students following the ETH Zurich ETIT Bachelor programme can directly enrol
for the ETIT Master programme when:
a. they only have to acquire a maximum of 30 credits for the Bachelor
degree, and
b. they have passed the first year exam and all the examination blocks.
