A.8.8 Describe and analyze the ways in which people in different regions of the world interact with their physical environments through vocational and recreational activities B.8.10 Analyze examples of conflict, cooperation, and interdependence among groups, societies, or nations A.8.9 Describe how buildings and their decoration reflect cultural values and ideas, providing examples such as cave paintings, pyramids, sacred cities, castles, and cathedrals Instructional Objectives: The student will be able to identify the dynasties present during ancient China. Students will be able to explain different characteristics of Ancient China, such as religion, life style and inventions. Target (Characteristics of a High Performance Classroom): Cultural Responsiveness: Teachers know the divers racial, ethnic, socio-economic and cultural backgrounds of their students and embed this knowledge throughout the curriculum to foster high levels of student learning. Assessment: The students will write a letter or diary entry as if they were a student present in Ancient China. They will focus on the way boys and girls were treated and include factual information that they will learn when reading this section for homework. Materials Needed: Powerpoint Over head projector Pen or Pencil Paper Total Time Needed: One Class Period Procedures: Introduction: Prior to the warm up I will just give the students a timeline for what we will be doing in class today. I am going to basically prep them for the class so they know what to expect. At this time I will also hand out the note sheet for the Ancient China lecture. Steps for instruction: Warm Up:

What do you know about Ancient China? What do you want to learn about Ancient China As part of the warm up I will ask the students to tell me their background knowledge on Ancient China. I am basically just trying to see if they have any prior knowledge and if they dont then I want to know what they would be interested in learning. After the warm up I want to expose the students to some Chinese culture. In order to do this I am going to teach them how to write hi in Chinese. Lecture: During this part of the lesson I will go over the different aspect of Ancient China. I will have a PowerPoint for the students to look at when I am giving the lecture. The students will be able to follow along with the note sheets and will have opportunities to ask questions throughout the lectures. Information provided in lecture: 1. Dynasties a. Ancient China was ruled by many emperors. The earliest emperors were most likely the Shang family. b. When an emperor died, his son took over. 2. Ancient Dynasty Timeline 3. The Great Wall of China 4. Religions In Ancient China a. There were three main types of religion in Ancient China: Buddhism, Daoism, and Confucianism. b. Chinese people also worshipped their ancestors. 5. After Death Ritual a. In ancient times, people used to cover the bodies of the dead with brushwood and clay and leave it in the familys home. i. They left utensils filled with food near the corpse. b. They thought the spirit of the dead would re-enter the body and would need food. Food items, which would not perish soon were kept beside the dead body. 6. Boys in Ancient China a. Boys, especially if they were the eldest, became head of the household, and his siblings then brought their families to live with him. b. Boys were considered as superior to girls, and, as head of the household, they were expected to keep up religious sacrifices to their family ancestors. c. A boy was expected to marry as soon as he was of age. 7. Girls in Ancient China a. Girls didn't have very nice lives, as wherever they went they had to obey all males. b. They first had to obey their father, then their husband, and finally their eldest son. c. Women had practically no power back then and they weren't allowed to own any property. 8. Family Traditions a. The names of the Ancient Chinese reflected the importance of their family.

b. The last name was always written first, and the first name last, and this is still the custom today. 9. Chinese Astrology: a. Based on the traditional astronomy and calendars. b. The zodiac of twelve animal signs represents twelve different types of personality. 10. Ancient Chinese Fashion a. A two-piece outfit consisting of a long tunic-usually belted or sashed, and over it was a jacket. b. Shoes also played an important role in fashion for the Chinese, for it separated them from barbarians whom went barefooted. 11. Inventions a. The Ancient Chinese created things like the seismograph, mechanical clock, compass, and bicycle chain hundreds or maybe even thousands of years before the Europeans. b. Gunpowder was another substance invented by the Chinese, although back then they only used it for fireworks.

Closure: I will bring the class back together as a group and ask them to share what they learned about the Ancient China. Then I will conclude by asking them to fully read the sections on Ancient China for their homework. They will also be assigned to take the information they learned in the lecture and combine it with what they learn in the reading to write a diary or letter as if they were living during this time period. I want them to be as creative as possible when doing this letter.
