Peace and all good! In todays Gospel from Matthew (22:1521)Jesusisengagedinadebatewithhisopponents, who try to trick Him into showing disloyalty either to the state(Caesar)ortotheirreligion(God.)Jesus,particularlyin theGospelofMatthew,isnotafraidtotakeonhisadversar iesortoavoidaddressinghotbuttonissueseveninacoun try under Roman military occupation. He declares authoritatively and convincingly that one ought to show appropriaterespectforbothcivilandreligiousauthoritybe causeonehasobligationstoboth.Frustrated,unabletowin theargument,hisopponentsleavethescene. TheissuethatthePhariseesraisedisonethatthefollow ersofJesushavehadtodealwiththroughoutthepasttwo millennia.AsChristians,wearenecessarilydualcitizens:we arecitizensoftheworldwelivein,andwearealsocitizens of the Kingdom of God that Jesus came to proclaim and to reveal.Soweareboundtotrytonegotiatethetensionsthat this dual citizenship may present. Good Christians make good citizens. That is, when we are expected to pay our taxes,obeyjustlaws,andcontributetothecommongoodof thecountryinwhichwelive.Insituationswherehumanlaws significantly conflict with the commandments of God, how ever,weareexpectedtoobeyGodsprecepts,evenwhenit meanspayingapriceintermsofourowncomfortandwell being. AsRomanCatholicChristians,wehaveexperiencedinour ownhistorytheeffectsofprejudiceanddiscrimination.Itis onlyinrecentdecades,forexample,thataCatholic(JohnF. Kennedy) was considered sufficiently loyal to be elected President. Since then, the walls of prejudice have basically fallenandreligiousaffiliationisbyandlargenolongercon sideredabarriertoholdingpublicofficeintheUnitedStates. However, there have been and still are other areas in whichChristiansliveintensionwiththestate.Wearecalled toaddresstheimportantmoralquestionsofourtime,apply ing the principles of our Christian faith. It is the witness of theChristianchurches,afterall,whichhadahugeeffecton the withdrawal of legally sanctioned racial discrimination in the Civil Rights movement. Christians have also been in volvedalthoughnotalwaysunitedinissuesrangingfrom abortiontoimmigrationtomilitarypoliciesandcapitalpun ishment. InrecentaddressesbeforetheparliamentsofbothBritain and Germany, Pope Benedict XVI himself has explicitly ex pressed the relevance of applying Christian values to con temporary public life. Drawing on Catholic teaching regard ingrespectforCreation,concernforthepoor,andthedan gersofenvironmentaldegradation,hesaid:Politicsmustbe astrivingforjustice,andhenceithastoestablishthefunda mentalpreconditionsforpeace.Asindividuals,inourevery day lives, we too are called to witness to the possibility of realandlastingpeacethroughourwordsbutmostimpor tantlythroughourexample.

Overthepastseveralweeks,Ivehadthechancetopar ticipateinthemeetingofseveralgroupsofheartcorepa rishionerspeople very much involved in and devoted to serviceinourparishfamily.InmymeetingwiththeSpanish speakingcatechistsofourReligiousEducationprogram,Ive listenedasteachersreflectedontheirconcernsforthechil drenandyoungpeopleinourcommunity:Howcanwepass on the treasure of our Catholic Christian faith to the next generationespecially when the youth are exposed to so many distractions and temptations? The leaders of the nearly 30 Small Christian Communities (SCC groups) simi larlyponderedonthewaysinwhichwecangettheWord out to invite and involve more parishioners into deeper participation in parish life. Finally, some 75 parishioners gatheredattheTownHallmeetingintheSerraCenterlast Sunday, led by the members of the Parish Advisory Board and Parish Finance Council. Again, the questions emerge: Where and how are we being led by the Spirit to be one mission at the Missionthe welcoming presence of Jesus Christ in the North County? How can we better assist the unemployedandthehomelessinourcommunity?Howcan wegetthefinancialresourcestoprovideservicesandkeep on the lights? Were all on the same page: weve got the strugglesandtheLordhastheplan! Some people have been asking me about our Discernment Group, whichmeets monthly at the Mission.We are a group of menwhoareintheprocessoflookingatwhatGodmightbeask ingofusnowandinthefuture.Togetherweareendeavoringto discernwhatitisGodmayhaveinmind.Itsabitofariskreally Godoftenhasasurpriseortwoinstoreifwedigdeepenough!!
