ever greater importance. Management development programmes play a significant part in this, not least at National Institute of Retail Management, where imparting Educational programmes specifically oriented to the retail sector have been established. We claim to be one of the first such educational centres in India catering specifically to the post-experience needs of retailers. Before we talk about the last 3 years diversions let's take a look at the emerging sectors in retailing today. Retailing, one of the largest sectors in the global economy, is going through a transition phase not only in India but the world over. For a long time, the corner grocery store was the only choice available to the consumer, especially in the urban areas. This is slowly giving way to international formats of retailing. The traditional food and grocery segment has seen the emergence of supermarkets/grocery chains (Food World, Nilgiris, Apna Bazaar), convenience stores (Convenio, HP Speedmart) and fast-food chains. It is the non-food segment, however that foray has been made into a variety of new sectors. These include lifestyle/fashion segments (Shoppers' Stop, Globus, LifeStyle, Westside), apparel/accessories (Pantaloon, Levis, Reebok), books/music/gifts (Archies, MusicWorld, Crosswords, Landmark), appliances and consumer durables (Viveks, Jainsons, Vasant & Co.), drugs and pharmacy (Health and Glow, Apollo). Retailing in more developed countries is a big business and better organized than what in India. According to a report published by McKinsey & Co. along with the Confederation of the Indian Industry the global retail business is a worth a staggering US$ 6.6 trillion. In the developed world, most of it is accounted for by the organized retail sector. NIRM's focus on the non retail sector now over a period of last 3 years has brought in a significant change within. We are now catering even to the FMCG, Consumer durables, Telecommunication, Mass Media, IT, Banking, Insurance, automobile etc, at large. The education industry other than the retail sector is equally or even moir booming and it is important for the country's economic and social development. India is one of the largest education and training markets in the world with an estimated student population of 400 million. Based on current and future manpower requirements of various sectors there is a huge demand supply gap in the education space. India's youth accounts for over 50 percent of its population with 367 universities and 18,000 colleges with half a million teachers and about 11 million students on the rolls. India can reap huge returns from this demographic advantage. NIRM's constant contribution towards the growth as a private institute has created awareness about programs we offer. The education market in India is assessed to be between USD 40bn to 50bn. There is a big employability issue among the educated youth especially graduates. According to a recent report, only 30% of all engineers, 25% of all finance and accounting professionals, and 20% of the general graduates from colleges and
universities are employable. More than half India's billion plus population is below the age of 25. But about 45% of its work force of about 400 million people is illiterate and another 40% comprises school dropouts as stated in a recent report. Where in a billion populated country only talent is not sufficient, higher education on parallel side have gained tremendous amount of respectability and acceptance in the market. Demand for graduates over the next five years is likely to be 13.8 million. But with only 13.2 million students graduating over the same period, India will face a shortfall of 600,000 graduates. There will be a shortfall of 3. There will be a shortfall of 3.1 million employable people by 2010 leading to a severe problem if the issue isn't tackled at the grassroots level. In most case, NIRM's motto is to ensure that every single individual that we reach to should realise that problem is not knowledge, but ability to communicate and implement that knowledge. There are two possible approaches self development and professional mentoring. People can read newspapers, books etc to improve skills or enrol in vocational training programs. Successful entrepreneurs are those who innovate, plan strategically, hold the risk bearing ability and stand strong against all stumbling blocks and transform them into stepping stones by bringing sweeping changes and revolutionizing business processes. The art of self study and further implementation will only enable one to achieve smart goals in a smart way. Globalization Education and HR development Knowledge is the driving force in the rapidly changing globalised economy and society. Quantity and quality of specialized human resources determine their competence in the global market. Emergence of knowledge as driving factor results in both challenges and opportunities. It is well known that the growth of the global economy has increased oppor tunities for those countr ies with good levels of education. Globalization has a multi-dimensional impact on the system of education. It promotes new tools & techniques in this area like E-learning, Flexible learning, Distance Education Programs and Overseas training. Globalization will mean many different things for education. In the near future, it will mean a more competitive and deregulated educational system modelled after free market but with more pressure on it to assure that the next generation of workers are prepared for some amorphous 'job market of 21st century. Though the enrolment has been increasing in absolute terms, only 7 per cent of the population in the age group 17 to 24 attended higher educational institutions in India, as against 92 per cent of the eligible age-group population attending higher educational institutions in USA, 52 per cent in UK and 45 per cent in Japan. Competitiveness is frequent topic of conversation these days among managers and government officials and in the news media. We define competitiveness as the relative standing of one competitor against other competitors. Competitiveness is like the
gamer of musical chairs: There are a finite number of places to sit, and some are more desirable than others. Education has come full circle. India today, certainly looks poised to regain the glory from the bygone eras of Nalanda and Taxashilla. NIRM believes in creating leaders, revolutionary thinkers in the business world. The wish list that one might want from NIRM may be endless. But as a bench mark NIRM will strive to provide a system that will incorporate the state-of-the-art education experience aimed at strengthening the conceptual, technical and human skills of the managers that emerge from the institute. The overall experience will be futuristic with features of intelligence, common sense brilliant IQ building that will be cumulative effect of Technology with knowledge partners from across the globe.
