CAN MINORITIES BE RACIST

It has been found that racial minorities in the United States have spent their lifetimes in a society that has traditionally valued whites over them and they are also likely to believe in the superiority of whites. Besides, its also worth nothing that in response to living in a racially stratified society, people of color sometimes complain about whites. Even when minorities are actually prejudiced against whites, they lack the institutional power to adversely affect whites lives.

INTERNALIZED RACISM

Internalized racism happens when a minority believes that whites are superior. This is because some minorities grew up in diverse communities where racial differences were appreciated; others felt rejected due to their skin color. For some minorities, the incentive to turn racism inward occurs when they see whites receiving privileges denied to people of color. Besides, minorities suffering from internalized racism, for example, may loathe the physical characteristics that make them racially distinct such as skin color, hair texture or eye shape. Others may stereotype those from their racial group and refuse to associate with them. Some of them may outright identify as white. Overall, minorities suffering from internalized racism buy into the notion that whites are superior to people of color. On the other hand, internalized racism can also be explain in such phenomenon which occurs when victims of racism turn racist attitudes and actions in against themselves or their racial/ethnic group, through coercion or conditioning.

HORIZONTAL RACISM

Horizontal racism shows the results of people of targeted racial groups such as Blacks, Latinos / Hispanics, Asians, Native who believe, act on or enforce the dominant (White) system of racist discrimination and oppression. Besides, this racism can happen between members of the same racial group. For example, an Asian person tells another Asian who is wearing a Sari to dress like an "American" or a Latino person tells another Latino to stop speaking Spanish. On the other hand, horizontal racism can also occur between members of different but targeted racial groups. For an example, Latinos believes stereotypes about Native Americans or Blacks do not want Asians to move into predominantly Black neighborhoods.

TYPES OF RACISM

There are four types of racism. The first type is Historical racism. This racism is based on lineage and common decent. It identifies a population with a common origin in history, but not a population with a fixed biological character. Besides that, historical racism used to define nation states in Europe as well as expressed through national symbols, such as Nazi eagle, Aryan cross. Moreover, it believed in superiority of some nations over others. The second type of racism is Scientific racism. It believes that we can all be characterized by race with certain physical traits, such as brain size, sloping forehead. Furthermore, there is a hierarchy of races in this racism. There are some races that have to civilize and socialize others providing a justification for colonialism such as colonialism in 1400s. The third type of racism is Institutional racism.
