12,000 miles away, but well
be your 16th man tomorrow
CAROLYN HITT
newsdesk@walesonline.co.uk
Dear Sam
& the boys,
T
his is to wish you the very best
of luck. But do you even need
it? The dictionary says that luck
is good fortune which occurs beyond
ones control.
But it seems to me all the good
fortune that has come Waless way in
this World Cup has occurred precisely
becauseyouandyour team-mates have
been in control. From the minute you
froze your extremeties off in those
fiendish Polish fridges you knew that
sheer sinew-stretching graft would
bring you to the semi-finals of the
World Cup rather than being smiled
upon by fortune.
Throughout your thrilling campaign
youve proved that playing with pan-
ache and power, style and strength and
endlessly putting your bodies on the
line brings rewards rather than the rub
of the green.
The ambassadorial teamculture that
has beenthe envy of other nations is no
fluke either. Youve formalised the nat-
ural chemistry between players by cre-
ating a choir. Youve bonded through
self-discipline, imposing your own
curfews and sensible drinking limits.
And when you faced the pressure of
the World Cup quarter-final you knew
that the intensity of your preparation
ensuredyouhadleft nothingtochance.
Sam, your inspiring words underlined
the sacrifices the players made and
would have to make to reach for the
prize.
Weve worked harder than any oth-
er teamtoget here, yousaid. We have
not gone through the pain of the train-
ing camps in Poland and everything
else to fail now. We dont want to be
going home on Monday because were
not done yet. So when we get back in
here, just make sure theres nothing left
in the tank, that you give every last
drop because that is what its going to
take.
Someone once said: Luck is what
youhaveleft over after yougive100per
cent. Well we know you have already
given 100 per cent and will do so
tomorrow in the biggest game in 130
years of Welsh rugby history.
So we are sending whats left over
all the luck in the world. Fromthe kids
who are wearing the red jersey to
school today tothe lady pensioner who
left Aberystwyth at 6.30am yesterday
morning to snap up a ticket for the
MillenniumStadiums big screen, every
last Welsh fan is rooting for you with
every fibre of their being.
We may be 12,000 miles away but
when the anthem resounds around
Welsh living rooms, pubs, rugby clubs
and the 50,000 fans in your home
ground well sing it with such fervour
you might just hear it in Auckland.
Well be with Jamie on every thun-
derous charge throughthe Frenchmid-
field, well be under every high ball
Leigh gathers, well sidestep with
Shane and sprint with George.
Well hit the deck with Dan as he
snaffles those turnovers. Well be on
Tobys shoulder when he gallops
through the gain line. And well kick
everypenaltythat Hookysends soaring
through the posts.
Well scrumdown with Adam, tackle
withGethinandleapinthe lineout with
Alun Wyn. Well pace the box with
Warren, rant at every dubious decision
from Rolland and laugh at Lievre-
monts funny little spiv moustache.
Well be with you from kick-off to
final whistle. From the land of your
fathers to the land of the long white
cloud, well be your 16th man Sam.
So good luck Wales but if you play
as brilliantly as we know you can you
might not even need it.
Yours in sport
Carolyn

Please dont stop Shane now,
CERI GOULD
ceri.gould@walesonline.co.uk
D
ONT stop us, pleaded
Shane Williams this week.
Im having such a good
time. Im having a ball.
But Im not going to lie to you. I
felt for him. There he is, having the
time of his life in NewZealand, with
the mouthwatering prospect of
hanging uphis boots as a WorldCup
champion. But the poor dab is 34.
Or, as many sports journalists de-
scribe it, the grand old age of 34.
And that means he has little in
common with his younger
team-mates.
Theres skill, of course, and en-
thusiasm, and, despite his longevity,
speed and strength. (Honestly,
youdthinktheaveragelifespanof a
Welshman these days was equal to
that of an England players vow of
abstinence).
But, as Shane himself confessed,
I just dont get their music.
George North, you see is 19.
Shane is 34. Has George ever heard
of a Walkman let alone had one in
his 1980s Christmas stocking?
Heck, Im only a tinsy-winsy bit
older than Shane and I remember
having Now Thats What I Call Mu-
sic for my birthday. Now Thats
What I Call Music Full stop.
Where is it up to these days Now
Thats What I Call Music #141?
And so, while I wish all our boys
the most gigantic boogie-beat of
luck, this message is aimed at little
Shane inparticular. Its anextra-spe-
cial one. Its agoodluckcompilation
tape. Ive written For Shane: Rugby
World Cup 2011, Just Do It on the
side in blue biro.
Track number one is Hello by
Lionel Richie. Substitute the me for
the World Cup and it makes perfect
sense. (Certainly much more than
that dreadful blind girl video ever
did.
Avideo, for the benefit of George
North and the youngsters, is what
artists used to film to accompany
their song which they tried to get
into the top 10. You had to buy the
single ina shopand... Ohwell, never
mind.)
Over to you Lionel, Is it me (the
World Cup) youre looking for, I can
see it in your eyes, I can see it in
your smile, youre all Ive ever
wanted and your arms are open
wide...
Track Two is obvious but no less
a goodie for that. Its Europe and
their tub-thumper, Final Count-
down. Wales v France, the final
countdown. Could it be more per-
fect? Heck, with his hairstyle, Adam
Jones could even be a band mem-
ber.
TrackThreeis KennyLoggins and
his grizzly Danger Zone. After all,
who knows which French teamwill
turn up?
Track Four is Diana Ross and her
Chain Reaction.
Thats in homage to our defence
which has been absolutely im-
mense. And the bodies we get to the
breakdown is breathtaking, not to
mention the recycling. Yes, were
talking about love, love, love. Were
talking about love.
But Ive decided to end with one
that isnt strictly 80s after I re-
membered that 1987 wasnt such a
good omen after all. But, if you
invert the seven and the eight you
end up with the perfect Shane and
co, tub-thumper. Its Queen, 1978.
And its Dont Stop Me Now.
Now I know the boys have been
practising their singing, so if Sam
wants to use it as a choral al-
ternative for his pre-match
team-talk on Saturday then thats
alright by me. (As long as Queen are
not too offended with this one-off
mangling of their amazing lyrics.)
Over to you Sam. And readers,
just try NOT to sing along.
Today, were gonna have ourselves a real good time
I feel alive and the World Cups turning inside out Yeah!
Its floating around, so grab it please
And dont lets stop now, dont stop us
Cos Im having a good time, having a good time
Lukes a shooting star leaping through the skies
Like a dragon defying the laws of gravity
Shanes a racing car passing by like Lady Godiva
Scotts gonna go go go and theres no stopping Leigh
Mikes burning through the tries Yeah!
Huw Bennetts the bees
And with North we can reach far and wide
Jamies travling at the speed of light
Gats wanna make a supersonic man out of you
Dont stop us now were having such a good time
When we dont have the ball, dont stop us now
Fans well show you a good time, just see us with the ball
Dont stop us now (Cos were having a good time)
Dont stop us now (Yes were having a good time)
Wales dont want to stop at all
Geths a rocket ship on his way to France
On a collision course
Adams a satellite, your scrums out of control
Hook our sexy 10 is ready to offload
Like Jon and Alun Wyn hes gonna
Oh oh oh oh oh expose
Were burning through the tries, Yeah,
Well beat the French by degrees
Tobys here to say au revoir, good night
Im poaching at the speed of light
I wanna make supersonic men out of you
Dont stop us now, were forming such a good line
Not even Shaun has to bawl, dont stop us now
If we just bide our time then Ill steal us some ball
Dont stop us now (Cos Im having a good time)
Dont stop us now (Yes Im having a good time)
Wales dont want to stop at all...
(Repeat to fade after 80 minutes. Then press eject France.)
GOOD LUCK COMPILATION: I can see it in your eyes, I can see it in your smile...
Shane, the extra-special one, prepares for a semi-final boogie

The teams success to date has
been put down in no small part to
the discipline of them starting a
choir. Here song masters reveal
why its so helpful to sing from
the same song sheet
OPPOSITE IS MY WALES
VERSION OF QUEENS
CLASSIC ANTHEM... SORRY!
Tim Rhys-Evans,
founder of award-
winning Cardiff-based
choir Only Men Aloud,
is not surprised that
the Welsh rugby
players have been
bonding during singing
sessions. He believes
that singing and rugby
are very similar.
With rugby, you get
15 different positions
with one aim to get
the ball from one side
of the pitch to
another. In a choir, you
get different sections
singing different parts
but with one aim a
good performance.
Im delighted to
hear the Welsh rugby
players have been
singing together as
well as being a great
bonding experience, it
releases endorphins
into the brain and
increases oxygen.
Tenor Wynne Evans,
famous for starring in
the Go Compare ads,
says singing in a group
is a great way to bond.
It encourages people
to listen to each other,
says the 39-year-old,
who lives in Cardiff. It
sends positive messages
to the brain and
encourages team
spirit.
Top tunes for
tomorrows game will
include the
spine-tingling Mae
Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau,
a bit of Delilah, while
the Millennium
Stadium is sure to
burst with a powerful
blast or two of Bread
of Heaven.
It may also, however,
resound with whats
become known as the
unofficial Wales Rugby
World Cup anthem.
The wittily re-written
Sloop John B as
performed by Mark
Berridge and the Sloop
Dogg choir is a You
Tube sensation.

includes several saucy
lines. Weve produced

RHODRI MORGAN
On our chances against France tomorrow... and beyond
We wont stuff
Les Bleus but
we should win
I
was in Brussels on Monday and
took advantage of being on
French-speaking soil to buy the
French sports newspaper LEquipe to
see what they made of the prospects
for the France-Wales semi-final.
LEquipe is an institution in French
sport. There is no equivalent in Britain,
a daily newspaper devoted entirely to
sport.
What shocked me was that they
were discounting Wales chances al-
together. They just looked at the
win-loss record between France and
Wales over the past 10 years, Wales
having just the two wins in the Grand
Slams of 2005 and 2008 and that was it
really. Wales have no chance.
Essentially that is the same mistake
that Ireland made. They went on and
on about being 9-3 ahead in the last 12
meetings between the two Celtic cous-
ins and Ireland exuded confidence that
they had the measure of Wales.
That over-confidence is the only ex-
planation possible for the contradic-
tion in the Irish team selection of
picking OGara at outside-half but not
going for goal when they got penalties
inside the Welsh 22.
If youre not going to go for the three
points, Jonny Sexton should have been
at 10 for Ireland and OGara could have
come on for the last 20 minutes, if the
game was very close and a drop goal
was needed.
France will be undone if they make
the same mistake and under-estimate
just how strong and fit this new style
Welsh team is now. Mind you, we will
have to up our game another five or 10
per cent to get to the final. France just
love their Tortue, the rolling maul off
the line-out. France love their fancy
back-line moves but they adore their
hard scrummaging props and the driv-
ing maul operators even more because
that is what sets upthe fancy stuff from
the backs.
Adam Jones and Gethin Jenkins
were fantastic against the much
vaunted Irish scrum but they will have
to up it again tomorrow. We gave away
toomany penalties. We spent toomuch
time in our own 22. Our defence was
superb but we dont want to make
things difficult for ourselves.
I suppose I would have preferred to
be facing England in the semi because
they are more predictable.
France are all over the shop as a
squad. The players are in open re-
bellion against Marc Lievremont, the
coach. TheyhavebeenplayingBMinus
rugby, then they found their A game.
They suddenly found the sparkle, in-
spired by Harinordoquy.
The great Basque No.8 is not much
heavier than Mervyn Davies was, back
in the 1970s. Hes am amazing athlete,
great intheline-out andveryfast off the
back of the scrum. Is he as fast as Toby
Faletau? We will find out tomorrow.
Dimitri Yachvili was their other in-
spiration, legs like a chicken but a kick
like a mule and the heart of a lion, as
indeed you would expect from the
grandson of a soldier in the Red Army
who took part in the heroic defence of
Stalingrad in World War II.
Can Mike Phillips snuff him out? He
produced one of his very special Big
Games for Wales last Saturday and he
needs to do it again.
My prediction? We wont stuff them
but wewill beat them. Theprofessional
era in rugby has been difficult for
Wales. Wejust tookalongtimetoadapt
to the new fitness culture required to
compete. To get to the top, rugby
players havetobeprofessional athletes
now.
The most successful athletes like
Colin Jackson barely, if ever, touch
alcohol. Colin did 1,000 press-ups and
1,000 sit-ups every day without fail
before any hurdling training. Dai
Greene probably does the same.
At long last we now have a team of
supremely fit truly professional ath-
letes, who are also talented rugby
players. Wales do seemto be the fittest
team in the World Cup. That is why
they will go all the way.
Rhodri
W
elcoming the world to
Wales and so help define
Wales as a nationhas been
our ambition at the Welsh Rugby
Union for the past five years.
This weekend the eyes of the
world will be firmly fixed upon an
extraordinary squad of players, sup-
ported by a very special group of
coaches and back room staff all
intent on delivering for us all.
This class of 2011 is establishing
and affirming the values of a modern
Wales. Youth, creativity and entre-
preneurial flair is backed up by
toughness, discipline and dedica-
tion.
Their achievements on the field at
this Rugby World Cup has been
complementedbytheir behaviour off
the field, marked by charm, courtesy
and a generosity of spirit.
Everyone in Wales should be
proudof our newambassadors. They
are to a man, role models for todays
modern rugby player, professional
sports man and woman and to the
youth of our nation. When Wales
takes to the field tomorrow at Eden
Park, a world renowned temple of
rugby, many people across our coun-
try deserve to stand tall.
Village rugby clubs packed to the
brim will rightly claim their sons
down in the Land of the Long White
Cloud. School teachers from north
tosouth, east towest will recount the
early playing days of our team in
red.
Our four regions, our Premiership,
our academies and everyone in-
volved in age grade and seven-a-side
rugby should rightly share in this
special moment. TheMillenniumSta-
dium will be full to the brim on
Saturday of the best rugby fans inthe
world coming together in one great
collective community.
And the mothers, fathers, family
and friends of this great team will no
doubt struggle to hold back a tear
and clear a lump in the throat when
the strains of Mae hen wlad fyn
hadau echo around the world.
Wales is in a good place today. We
are in safe hands. Our future has
never been so exciting and the
present never so memorable. Come
on Wales!

... Six quid for a pint,
A grand for the flight,
With Sam our captain well take the cup home!
So hoist up the John B Sail,
See how the main sail sails,
Call for the captain ashore take the cup home,
Well take the cup home,
Well take the cup home,
With Sam our captain,
Well take the cup home!
Martin Johnsons a bitter man,
Without Clive he has no plan,
He always bitches and moans like a true pom,
Hes losing his hair,
But we dont care,

The First Minister of Wales
We mean business...
on and off the field
A
few weeks ago a place in
the semi-final would have
seemed like a good out-
come. I was fortunate enough to
be at our first game, against South
Africa, and that was when I began
to believe we could go a long way
in this tournament.
The teams achievement has
been magnificent. Its been a
marathon effort to get to the last
four andthewholenationis proud
of them. The rugby squad are
great ambassadors for our coun-
try on and off the field.
In these economic times the
teamis raisingthewholecountrys
spirits and they epitomise the best
of Wales hard work, determ-
ination, skill, flair and passion.
I met the squad during my visit
to New Zealand and have kept in
touch since. It would be foolish to
underestimate the French; on
their day theyre capable of beat-
ing anyone. But based on the
evidence of our own eyes, so can
we and I am absolutely confident
the boys will do themselves, and
all of us, proud.
First and foremost I ama Wales
rugby fan, but let me say
something as a First Minister. This
isnt just about sport. Its a
once-in-a-generation opportunity
for Wales on an international
stage. Its giving us attention
around the world that money just
couldnt buy.
Although its difficult to make
direct links between international
profile and investment into Wales,
its only common sense that the
more people around the world
who take note of Wales the easier
it is for us to sell ourselves in a
competitive environment. As a
result of reaching the semi-final
and of how weve played, media,
opinion formers and lovers of
sport all around the globe are
talking enthusiastically and pos-
itively about Wales. This can only
help our wider marketing efforts
and makes it easier for us to push
at open doors.
My message to the world is
clear. Wales is a small country but
can compete with the best. Our
rugby team exhibit our chief vir-
tues thorough preparation, skill
and competitiveness. Wales is a
great country to live, to study and
do business in. Come and see for
yourself the richness of our
culture and the beauty of our
environment. See for yourself the
support we offer business and
trading partners. Wales is open for
business.
Im proud of the squad and all
theyve done to show our country
at its best.
I have sent Warren Gatland and
the boys my best wishes for the
game and on this, I know that I
speak for the whole nation.

Welsh Beauty:
the wristband
version...
ITS an image that put the Hollywood
movie, American Beauty, at the top of the
charts when it was released but weve
given it a more Celtic twist covering our
model with Come on Wales wristbands.
The success of our charity wristbands has
been overwhelming. Its fair to say the
Welsh public has covered themselves in
glory with the way theyve snapped up the
1 bands, all of the proceeds for which, go
to Welsh cancer charity Tenovus.
Here model and Miss Wales runner-up
Sophie Hall, 20, from Abercarn, Caerphilly,
has helped recreate the famous rose-petal
scene, from the award-winning 1999 film
American Beauty starring Kevin Spacey.
Instead of rose petals shes adorned in our
wristbands. Tenovus has turned this picture
into posters which are on display in their
South Wales shops.
You can still get your hands on a
wristband which are also worn by our
boys in New Zealand as a reminder of the
fantastic support from home by visiting
www.comeonwales.co.uk. Theyre also on
sale at all of Tenovuss Welsh stores and
will be on sale tomorrow at the Millennium
Stadium.

Two of our first XV of Welsh bloggers Seb Barrett and Kumari
Tilakawardane from our fans site comeonwales.co.uk deliver
their verdicts on tomorrows crunch game
Sebposts:
I BELIEVE the Irish are a
better side than the French.
This doesnt guarantee a win
for Wales tomorrow, but do I
expect one? Yes. These arent
simply the words of a cocky fan
whose side has made it to the
semi-finals, against all apparent
odds. The proof is in the pud-
ding, after all, so let us eat cake
(to blend my sayings).
In terms of personnel,
France are in many ways a
similar side to Ireland: a back-
bone of veterans, along with a
sprinkling of youth. They too
have a plethora of Heineken
Cup winners in their midst
(something the Irish made
much noise about before com-
ing unstuck against us). Grand
Slams havent been alien to
them in recent years either.
The world seems to be in
agreement that Wales are play-
ing the better rugby of the two
sides. Admittedly, this accolade
counts for nothing if we dont
beat the French tomorrow, but
in all honesty, Ive never felt
such confidence in a Welsh
side. Ask yourself if you have.
The past tells us that France
are dangerous. Only slightly
more impressive than Napo-
leons victory in the Battle of
Austerlitz in 1805 was Jean
Claude-Skrelas teams defeat of
the All Blacks in the 1999 World
Cup.
Heres hoping Saturday will
bear more resemblance to
Frances involvement in the
First Indochina War: surrender
to a marauding red army.
Something tells me Google
Translate hasnt quite gotten to
the ominous stage where it can
interpret the finer nuances of
the French language, but heres
some of the humorous musings
it regurgitated from a recent
LEquipe article entitled Welsh
Insanity: Opposed to the XV
Leek semi-finals, the Blues will
have to contain the fury of the
Welsh. Since the start of the
championships, players Warren
Gatland offer the most com-
plete game and unpredictable.
I think theyre complimenting
the XV Leek in there some-
where, because they go on to
quote Dimitri Yachvili as saying,
somewhat mysteriously: [The
Welsh] feel really confident,
even in their heads.
Thejournalist, Vincent Father-
Lahaille, details the need for Les
Bleus to escape Wales mad-
ness. Pot-kettle-black, Vin-
cent!
Then again, it might say more
Irelands Stephen Ferris is dumped by Wales Sam Warburton, left Seb posts, Wales can do the
same against the French
Using the likes of George North has been a masterstroke by Gatland, posts Kumari
Tilakawardane
about my need to learn French
and rely less on Google Trans-
late than any hypocrisy on his
part.
Now, if only we can get a
harder title than the Leek XV.
Kumariposts:
There can be no doubting that
Wales are the in-form team go-
ing into the semi-finals. Wales
have consistently played the
best rugby and arguably have
played the most exciting
games.
The young average age of
Wales squadhas clearlyworked
to their advantage.
True, it could have gone
either way.
But it ended up being a mas-
terstroke by Gatland, imple-
menting the likes of Priestland,
Faletau and North.
Its a well known clich that
size doesnt matter when play-
ing rugby.
It should be a similar logic
when applying age to the game.
Sam Warburton has all the at-
tributes necessary to be a
hugely successful captain hes
at the top of his game, widely
lauded as one of the best 7s in
the world.
Hes got a commendable at-
titude when it comes to com-
mitment tothe game rather than
alcohol; hes clearly got the loy-
altyof his players... sowhyis the
fact hes a young and inex-
perienced 23-year-old the first
thing on peoples lips when dis-
cussing him?
In essence, I wouldnt say
Warren Gatland has picked a
young team. Id say hes picked
an outstanding team who have
shownthis everystepof theway
in RWC 2011.
The quarter-final victory
against Ireland merely demon-
strated that the talented bunch
can perform under pressure.
Wales go into tomorrows
clash with the fluid French
brimming with well-earned con-
fidence.
Every one of those young-
sters has come of age.

Kim Nicholas You can win
the cup and bring it home to
Wales. When you are on form
you are unstoppable just like in
2003 and 2007 Grand Slams.
Have the belief and keep going!
I predicted youd win the Grand
Slams and predicted youd do
it this time too so I am not
surprised youve done so well
so far. Stick together and just
win it! When the Welsh rugby
team do well the whole of
Wales feels good. Give Wales
the feel good factor!! Just win
it! You deserve it and its the
best chance youve had. Good
luck were all rooting for you
and are so proud.
Kerry Davies: Well done

example to rugby players
everywhere. We know you can
go all the way, but win or lose
you make us proud to be
Welsh.
Dominic Rogers: Hey
guys! I aint been following you
much since I moved to Canada
four years ago, but Ive been
looking recently and youre
doing great. I really hope you
guys make it past France and
into the finals. Even if you
dont, Wales is the best rugby
team ever!
Debbie Owen: Good luck
boys the whole of Wales is
with you. As always, you are
making us so very proud to be
Welsh. Whatever the score on
Sat the whole touring party has
been fantastic you are our
heroes. Cmon Wales.
Steve Breeze: Like George
Im a Gog but you boys have
united the nation. No fear boys,
you can do this. Ireland were
the biggest hurdle, rack the
points up against France and
they will go to pieces. Never
felt so proud.
David Holmes: Thanks for
a FANTASTIC World Cup. Good
luck for the France game. Keep
doing what you are doing its
brilliant. Hopefully see you in
Auckland for the final.
Michael Moore: I want to
tell a story of a group of lads
who made remarkable history
by lifting their whole country. A
country of rolling hills, slender
valleys, distinctive coastlines
and a people so passionate
about their rugby that their
tears form emerald lakes that
shimmer incandescently. One
could argue that these lads are
the finest group of rugby
players to play for their
country. They train like the
hunting panther, they are alert
as the scorpion, they form
cohesion like the dolphins,
they move like the cheetah,
they defend their territory like
the mountain wolf, their vision
is like the eagle, they are as
cunning as the fox and they
fight like the lion. They
achieved great success due to
their prowess, but they know
there is much more to come.
They know that the ultimate
goal is at hand, a prize that
would change their lives
forever and bring lasting joy to
a proud nation. The key would
be an element of calm, an
element of survival and an
element of hope. Their proud
nation thinks this is a reality
and is behind them 100%.
Best of luck as you thoroughly
deserve it!
Tony Coward: Well done

Former
students
chasing
cup glory
NEATH Port Talbot College
(NPTC) continues to be a
breeding ground for sporting
success after five former
students were selected to
represent Wales at the Rugby
World Cup in New Zealand.
James Hook, Aled Brew,
Craig Mitchell and Tavis Knoyle,
who all studied BTEC National
Diploma in Sport at the College,
together with Paul James, who
studied Auto Mechanics, are
part of the squad.
Geraint Jones, director of
Sport and Public Services, said:
The college, celebrating its
80th birthday this year, would
like to wish the Welsh squad
and, in particular, the five
players every success this
weekend against France.
We have a proud tradition
at NPTC of delivering sporting
success and have excellent
facilities to match. In fact, we
have recently opened our new
6m sports complex at the
Llandarcy Academy of Sport
and Learning, he added.
The facility includes a
national standard hard court
sports hall and climbing wall
together with classrooms, along
with an indoor bounding track.
Outside, there is a Multi Use
Games Area and an IRB
standard 3G artificial pitch. Its
been built on land next to the
existing Llandarcy Academy of
Sport and Learning.
The whole site is operated
by Llandarcy Park Ltd , now a
wholly owned subsidiary of
