Better Learning through Engagement, Networking, and Development

Welcome to BLEND 2011 This years theme is From Knowledgeable to Knowledge-able: Building New Learning Environments for New Media Environments. In our rapidly changing world, it is clear that our students communicate, learn, and interact in various environments simultaneously. This has tremendous implications for how we know, learn, think, and teach in higher education. It is important that we understand how to leverage the new media ecology to support student learning. This years conference creates professional development opportunities for learning, networking, and sharing among educators from both the higher education and K-12 sectors. Our keynote, Dr. Michael Wesch shares his research and insights into the new media ecology many of our students are engaged in. Additionally, we have a great lineup of presenters sharing best practices and experience of integrating technology in online and face-to-face instruction. We are excited about your participation in and contribution to this years meeting. Henrietta Siemens, Ph.D. BLEND Conference Chair

Enhance Your Productivity: Try Dropbox & Diigo Jeanne Janzen Media/Tools/Web 2.0 AIH 112 (lab) Two free apps that give you access to easy-to-use productivity tools. DropBox gives you 2GB of free storage on a secure website, which means you can access your files from anywhere from any computer. You can choose to collaborate with others by sharing a particular file(s) with them or keep your items private. Diigo allows you to organize any websites, articles or YouTubes into a searchable web library. You can highlight items, add sticky notes, and make your own categories for ordering your web findings. Both tools are amazingly well worth checking into!

Strategies for Using Facebook to Create Community Breck Harris Higher Learning NOH 125 Social media tools like Facebook are growing tremendously both in size and global importance as a new and evolving form of human social communication. In this session, the presenter will discuss effective strategies used to create community with 115 Fresno Pacific University adult degree completion student alumni using the social media tool Facebook. Insights will also be discussed related to what types of information is best shared by faculty on their facebook page when your facebook friends include former adult students. Participants will have the opportunity to view the presenters Facebook home page and wall as these strategies are discussed. Engaging Techne & Psyche: Developing Creative Learning Cultures Peggy Avakian Higher Education NOH 127 As scholars and practitioners in our innovative and rapidly changing world, we are called to tend to the often tenuous relationship between techne and psyche. When reimagining and developing creative learning cultures, we must see how the dance between techne and psyche presents multiple challenges and opportunities. This presentation addresses three key learning objectives: 1) Participants will explore sociotechnical and cultural shifts in education that affect techne and psyche; 2) Participants will discover specific methods to bring techne and psyche into dialogue; and 3) Participants will see and learn various strategies to engage symbolic representation toward developing creative learning cultures.

Incorporate this Web Based Learning Tool into Your Curriculum Robert Leitgeb Media/Tools/Web 2.0 Ashley Auditorium Offered through FPU for several years, recently upgraded tracking tool puts a new twist on this excellent online training service. Now you are able to assign technology tracks to your course curriculum, manage and assign technology assessments, and much more. Use of Mediative Questions in Transforming Student Response Online David Derby Higher Education NOH 125 One of the challenges faced by many of us who teach online is the structuring of our questions in forums, journals, and/or written assignments to provoke deeper and different levels of complexity of thinking. Embedded in questions that are asked in a face to face situations are certain phrasing, tonal, and visual cues that signal and invite behavior or thinking processes. Online, these cues are generally absent when giving instructions leading to a prompt where we would like our students to perform, think, and/or share with each other. Becoming mindful and intentional about using meditative questions that transform our students thinking and perspective is a skill and an art that may help overcome this challenge. In this session a more deliberate use of language and syntax to construct questions in ways that mediate desired mental processes for students will be examined. Participants in this session will be introduced to a framework for creating meditative questions and then practice the process with each other in a constructivist environment. Finally, sharing and discussion of the process will help participants articulate their understanding as they leave with a practical, hands-on tool to make a difference in more fully engaging our online students.

Some specific topics covered will be organizing email, setting up rules, creating distribution lists, using tasks, scheduling meetings, booking conference rooms, using mobile devices with Microsoft Exchange, and accessing your account via the web. We will wrap things up with a time of questions and answers. Learning, Technology, & The Amazing Brain Maryam Torbati Higher Education NOH 125 Learning, Technology and the Amazing Brain (brain facts, technology facts, learning facts, and the latest research in a stimulating PowerPoint show) Research shows that the best learning occurs when learners are engaged, interested, and fascinated by what they are learning, and furthermore learning transpires when teachers can capitalize on the visual, pattern-seeking nature of the human brain so that information may be transferred into long-term memory. Come learn how technology & brain research can be incorporated into your instruction in ways that make learning more exciting and brain compatible. Using Online Tools to Manage Your Many Responsibilities Lorin Lachs Media/Tools/Web 2.0 NOH 127 Sometimes the sheer volume of tasks for which educators are responsible can become overwhelming. The upshot of this is either a) increased stress, b) forgetfulness, or c) both. Online tools and Web 2.0 technologies can be of enormous value in managing these seemingly never-ending responsibilities. The presenter will discuss a few of his personal favorite tools that are incredibly helpful, easy to use, and - best of all - free. He will also share tricks and tips for adapting and personalizing these tools for your own needs.

Using Screen-Capturing Technology for Teaching & Learning: Jing Rebecca McMillen Media/Tools/Web 2.0 NOH 127 University faculty and staff spend a varying amount of time daily communicating with current and prospective students, staff, and faculty. In recent years, traditional methods of communication have given way to email, text messages, tweets, Facebook posts, video messaging and screen capture. However, are these forms of communication effective and efficient in a university setting? This presentation overviews Jing, a free and simple screen-shot and screencast platform designed to make communication fast, easy, and effective. Jing enables users to incorporate screencasts and screen shots into email which can then be used for a variety of common university functions, such as recruitment, online learning/courses, academic advising, and commenting on students homework. Participants in this session will view a live demonstration of Jing, have an opportunity to use the program, and learn how to incorporate it as best practices in their courses, advising, and everyday academic life.
