CIVIL ENGINEERING TECHNOLOGIST

DESCRIPTION:
Assist Civil Engineers in the research, design, construction, inspection, maintenance and coordination of projects. Typical projects include roads, sanitary and storm servicing infrastructure, and water supply systems. They estimate costs, prepare specs for materials and delivery and equipment needed. Productivity, quality, inspections of civil engineering works, nished works are all monitored.

Duties:
Develop engineering designs and drawings from preliminary concepts and sketches Prepare construction specications, cost and material estimates, project schedules and reports Supervise data collection, conducting eld surveys, inspections or technical investigations of infrastructure systems, buildings and structures. Conduct or supervise inspection and testing of construction materials

SKILLs:
Ability to work as a team, communicating technical information in an organized manner Good oral and communication skills Ability to work within a timeline and deal with unexpected situations effectively

Completion of a three year college program in civil engineering technology or a closely related discipline Certication in civil engineering technology or in a related led is available through provincial associations of engineering/applied science technologists and technicians and may be required for some positions

SALARY: $31,000 to $51,000

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION:
In the Civil Engineering Technology diploma program you gain a balanced education in civil engineering theory, combined with practical work in laboratories and in the eld. Specialization takes place through a third-year major project. You become familiar with the structural properties of timber, steel, masonry and concrete and study the design of roads, water distribution and sewage and drainage systems. The major business aspects of civil engineering are also covered, as are technical communications skills.

THE FOLLOWING ARE 3 SIMPLE WAYS OF GETTING STARTED IN THE CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY:

You can begin by applying for a job directly in the Civil Construction Industry. Once you begin working with a Construction Company or Contractor you will quickly gain the necessary skills needed to advance yourself through in-house, work-as-you-learn training. You can enrol in a University, Community College or a Private Technical School to study and prepare yourself for a Career in Civil Construction. All of this information may be found through our website. You can get started through an apprenticeship program by combining on the job training with technical in-class training gaining experience and increased responsibility. You can work in the industry, get paid and work towards earning credits.
