Sciences - Advisor Discussion Guide


College of Pharmacy & Health Sciences

The CPHS advising program seeks to support the mission of Drake University and the Health Sciences program in the provision of a student-centered learning environment. The CPHS advising program personnel include the faculty advisor and the Office of Academic and Student Affairs. Through this team, students have multiple sources of information to address the Drake Curriculum and the CPHS curricular objectives.

Academic Advising Roles


Student
Initiate conversation with faculty advisor Access degree audit to verify correct records, contact the Office of Academic and Student Affairs if there are discrepancies Be familiar with policies/procedures and take responsibility for deadlines. If unsure, ask Office of Academic and Student Affairs staff Take an active role in the development of the advising process Maintain and update the individual education plan Research career options and graduate/professional admission processes Seek out opportunities for involvement, leadership, and professional development

Faculty Advisor
Help students adapt to the college environment Assist in the development of the students education plan by providing input and feedback Encourage discussions about the appropriateness of their chosen career track and the career options within the profession Assist students in identifying opportunities for professional skill development Make appropriate referrals to university student services offices when academic or personal difficulties arise

Office of Academic and Student Affairs


Answer questions regarding registration, credit completion, program requirements, Drake Curriculum, course transfer process, and study abroad opportunities Coordinate the registration process, verify appropriate registration of courses Review/approve educational plan waivers and transfer credit requests Update degree audits with regard to substitutions, waivers, and transfer courses Coordinate and communicate opportunities for internships, study abroad, research, and post-graduate study Serve as a resource for additional degree opportunities, such as minors and concentrations
