The wisdom of age

She is 94 years young. I met her when she was 59 and I was in my 30s. Her husband performed our wedding. He was the juvenile judge in the county where I worked with incarcerated youth, and I have been searching for them for several years. I found her three months ago in Colorado. When her Mike died four years ago, her kids moved her there to be close to them. After our first phone call, I received an email from her. She said, I am scraping myself off the ceiling since your call because I am so high with joy. No one could have said it better. She wanted to know if I used Skype. This woman is 94, mind you. She briefly mentions TIAs and hospital stays, but focuses on humor, family and a bit of how lonely she is without Mike. When I told her that my husband, Bill, died, she responded, Half of your heart is missing, isnt it, Mary? There is a huge hole. I know just how you feel. She does know. I hope to get to Colorado to visit her soon and when I told her that, she said, We shall sit up to the wee hours of the morning talking. You can stay with me; I have a guest room. If we could all grow old the way Helen has, the world would be much better off. She has always had a great sense of humor, cared deeply about everyone, been an avid reader and remains that way. This, in spite of losing a teenage son years ago, all her close friends and her beloved Mike. Nothing defeats her. What a treat it was to hear her voice and see her face (on Skype). Having friends makes life worth living. A good friend To FRIEDEL-HUNT, Pg. 4B

Nicolet hires learning service coordinator

Students at Nicolet College will have greater access to service learning opportunities thanks to the new AmeriCorps/VISTA coordinator working out of the Rhinelander campus. Chris Meier began work this fall in the new Nicolet Area Technical College Center for Community Engagement which is designed to connect students with area community groups for service learning projects. My focus now is learning about the needs of the many different community groups in the North Woods and then matching these needs with service learning projects for Nicolet students, Meier said. Many courses at Nicolet have service learning requirements where students engage in meaningful civic projects that present students with significant learning opportunities. The students benefit by learning new skills and expanding their knowledge about a given subject, the community groups benefit by getting assistance with projects, and our communities benefit as a whole from the work completed by these partnerships, Meier explained. He went on to add that only certain projects qualify, with the key component being that the project must offer the opportunity for student learning. Meiers position is funded through the AmeriCorps VISTA/Wisconsin Campus Compact. Prior to beginning his coordinator position, Meier was a junior high and high school English teacher for 24 years, including 16 years in the Phelps School District. For more information, contact Meier at (715) 365-4462, 1(800) 544-3039, ext. 4462, or cmeier@nicoletcollege.edu. His office is located in room 110 of the Learning Resources Center on the Rhinelander campus.

Pines middle school to participate in Month of the Young Adolescent

October is Month of the Young Adolescent, an annual international collaborative effort of education, health and youth-oriented organizations. Initiated by National Middle School Association, Month of the Young Adolescent brings together a wide range of organizations to focus on the needs of this age group. Northland Pines Middle School (NPMS) will celebrate to draw attention to the needs of 10- to 15-year-olds and the ways people may support those youngsters. Month of the Young Adolescent was created to bring about greater awareness of four key concepts that will help young adolescents reach their potential: the importance of parents being knowledgeable about young adolescents and being actively involved in their lives; the understanding that healthy bodies plus healthy minds equal healthy young adolescents; the realization that the education young adolescents experience during this formative period of life will, in large measure, determine the future for all citizens; and the knowledge that every young adolescent should have the opportunity to pursue his or her dreams and aspirations, and post-secondary education should be a possibility for all. NPMS will host a number of events during October to emphasize the importance of supporting students as an investment in the community. Jacqueline Coghlan, middle school principal, stated that young adolescents are reaching out to become their own person, to achieve independence, and to set their own direction. Yet, its also a time when they need support and encouragement from adults who care about them, including parents, family members, educators, employers, mentors and anyone in the community who comes in contact with them. The young adolescents with whom we work and live on a daily basis deserve our best efforts if each is to have the chance to become all he or she can and should be. Together, we can make a difference . . . to insure a bright future for all young adolescents, she concluded. The following activities are planned for October at NPMS: monthly recognition assemblies for students in each grade level; Oct. 18, sixth-grade parent visitation. Parents may attend classes with their son or daughter to experience what goes on in the classroom; Oct. 18, Parent Teacher School Association meeting in Room 434 at 4 p.m. in the middle school, all parents and students may attend and help plan activities for the middle school students; Oct. 19, seventh-grade parent visitation. Parents may attend classes with their son or daughter to see what a day in the life of a middleschooler is like; Oct. 20, eighth-grade parent visitation. Parents may join their son or daughter to participate in the daily activities at the middle school; Oct. 21, middle school dance sponsored by the Student Council; Oct. 24, Cookie Dough Fundraiser kickoff; and Oct. 24-28, Red Ribbon Week. The middle school is always in need of adults who could serve as concerned and caring mentors, coaches, lunchroom supervisors and guest speakers in the classroom. Anyone who has a talent or interest that they would be willing to share with the students at Northland Pines Middle School may call the school office at (715) 4796479.

This November the YMCA will offer the program as a preview to the 12-week Fit For Life contest slated for February. The program will kick off the Fall 2 Session which begins Oct. 31 and will run to Dec. 17. is a gift an anam cara (soul friend), a family of choice. My friend is a mentor, she always has been. She and I had a mutual friend who died several years ago. Margaret was a therapist where I worked. Our supervisor told me once that he would gladly pay her just to stand in the main hall of our multiservice treatment center and report what she senses each day. That is how intuitive Margaret was. Her office was a mess and she was always late for everything. That was a joke around the center. But she radiated kindness and skill. If I was stuck on how to deal with a kid, I went to her. These two women strong, educated leaders did their masters degrees in the early 40s. They were my teachers as a young therapist. I believe I learned as much from them as I did in graduate school. Margaret is gone and Helen is in Gods waiting room as my mom used to call her senior residence but I am a better person for having both of them for friends. Between the two of them and my own Mom, I am one blessed woman. Mary Friedel-Hunt, MA LCSW, is a freelance writer and psychotherapist in the Madison area. Demmer to host discussion of documentary Prohibition

The Demmer Library in Three Lakes will host an informal discussion of the documentary Prohibition Wednesday, Oct. 12, at 6:30 p.m. Prohibition is a three-part, five-and-one-half hour documentary film series directed by Ken Burns and Lynn Novick that tells the story of the rise, rule and fall of the 18th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution and the era it encompassed. The culmination of nearly a century of activism, prohibition was intended to improve the lives of all Americans and protect individuals, families and society at large from the effects of alcohol abuse. But the enshrining of a faith-driven moral code in the Constitution paradoxically caused millions of Americans to rethink their definition of morality. The film raises questions about means and ends, individual rights and responsibilities and the proper role of government. For more information, contact the Demmer Library at (715) 546-3391.

The St. Germain yard waste facility open days have been changed from the previously announced days of Friday and Saturday. The facility, which is located on Juve Road, will be open only Saturdays from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. until Nov. 5. Also new this year is a $2 charge to be paid at the time of the drop-off. Supervisor Fred Radtke explained that the $2 charge is for any size drop-off load. The facility is open only for residents of St. Germain. No contractor items will be allowed. Items that can be dropped off are grass clippings, pine needles, brush, small branches and logs. Items should not have dirt or ground attached because it interferes with the shredder machinery which is used to create compost. Items not accepted are hay that is used for animal bedding, stumps, lumber and household items.
