From its earliest patented designs and operating systems, Franchi embraced the philosophy of providing new products for new needsa concept thats driven the company from its beginning. More than 60 years ago Franchi began manufacturing the long-recoil 48 AL, hailed as an innovation in shotgun technology, and the ultimate refinement of long-recoil autoloaders. The next development was in the direction of gas-operated semi-autos, and the current modernization trend includes the incorporation of the Inertia Driven system to drive the latest generation of Franchi semi-automatic shotguns. The Franchi semi-autos remain the choice of many discerning wingshooters for their lightning-fast handling qualities and superior feel. Technology Inertia Driven is the heart of the Franchi family of semi-automatic firearms and relies

upon one of the basic laws of physics: The Law of Inertia, which states that an object at rest will remain at rest. The object, in the Inertia Driven system, is the free-floating bolt. All the other gun parts are fixed in place. Between the free-floating bolt and the rotary locking head is a short, very stiff inertia spring. When the gun is fired all of the fixed-parts of the gun are propelled rearward by the guns recoil. The bolt briefly holds its position as the fixed parts move to the rear around it, causing the inertia spring to compress. As the shot charge leaves the barrel and the rearward force of the gun diminishes, the compressed inertia spring throws the bolt rearward with sufficient force to unlock the rotating bolt head, eject the spent shell and re-cock the hammer. The recoil spring then returns the bolt, which travels forward picking up and chambering another shell and locking the rotating head back into place. The bolt weight and inertia spring power are sufficient to cycle everything from 23/4" target loads to heavy 3" magnums.

Step 1 ChAMBerIng
As the bolt assembly moves into battery, the locking head pin moves along a curved track in the bolt body to rotate the steel bolt head into engagement with the steel barrel extension.

Step 2 FIrIng
When the gun fires every part of the shotgun except the bolt body moves rearward. The curved track in the bolt body, which is moving forward relative to the rest of the gun, presses against the locking head pin, turning the bolt head even tighter into the barrel extension. A shell is allowed to exit from the magazine.

Step 3 reCOIL
Near the end of the recoil cycle, chamber pressure drops to a safe level and the guns rearward motion slows. The heavy inertia spring then thrusts the bolt assembly rearward, unlocking the rotating bolt head, extracting the spent shell from the chamber and pulling it against the ejector.

Step 4 ejeCTIOn
As the empty shell exits the receiver, the energy of the moving bolt assembly recocks the hammer and compresses the recoil spring on the magazine tube. The recoil spring then thrusts the bolt assembly forward, lifting the oncoming shell into position and chambering a fresh cartridge. The gun is ready to fire againin a fraction of a second!

The Franchi 720 is a reliable and strong waterfowl gun because of a rotating bolt head that's at the heart of the operating system. The bolt head locks like a vault into the barrel extension. With lock-up achieved in that way, the receiver of the 720 waterfowl gun can be manufactured from a super-light alloy. As a result, the 720s weight is just 5.8 pounds.

A recoiling barrel is the sure sign of a long-recoil autoloader design. On firing, bolt and barrel travel rearward together. As pressure inside the barrel drops, they unlock and the barrel returns forward under spring pressure. The bolt follows, picking up a fresh shell on its way. When it returns to battery, another shot can be fired immediately.

The craftsmanship of generations of Italian gunsmiths has inspired the Veloce SP over/under shotguns classic side-plate design. The receiver is precision machined from special lightweight alloy and nickel-plated. It is embellished with fine, high relief scroll engraving set off by gold-embellished game birds. The Veloce SP is fitted with AA-Grade oil-finished, figured walnut stock and fore-end with 28-line-per-inch, fine line checkering.

The traditional walnut butt-plate is adorned with an intricate basket weave pattern. The plate is affixed to the stock with machine screws in steel escutcheons and anchors that protect the fine wood.

The tang and trigger guard are fully engraved and the action opens by a filigreed top-break lever to reveal a fully jeweled monobloc.

The Veloce SP showcases traditional side-plate design. On the left plate, gold relief pheasants take flight above grass-covered hills, surrounded by deep, relief-engraved scrollwork. On the right side, scrollwork surrounds gold embellished waterfowl.

The name Fenice evokes the concept of the ultimate progression of the gunmakers art. The World Class Fenice 20- and 28-gauges from Franchi are built around the time-tested 48 AL design. The Fenices high-polish, chrome-plated bolt is contained in a nickel-plated lightweight alloy receiver featuring fine scroll engraving and generous gold game scene inlays. The Fenice is fitted with an oil-finished stock of AA-Grade, highly figured European walnut.

The Fenice features a gold-plated trigger and a cross-bolt safety positioned at the rear of the trigger guard.
