1.0 INTRODUCTION

Trade union is formed to protect and promote the interest of their members. Their primary function is to protect the interest of the workers against discrimination and unfair Labour practices. In their working life employees do get dissatisfied with various aspects of working may be with the attitudes of the manager policy of the company working condition and behaviour of the colleagues. Trade unions are formed for the representation of employees in the organization. According to Indian trade union act 1926 A trade union is a combination of whether temporary or permanent formed primarily for the purpose of regulating the relations between the workmen and employer or between workmen and workmen or employer and employer or for imposing restrictive conditions on the conduct of any federation of two or many trade union. According to flandes and cleggre the main objective of a trade unions are Defining and improving the wages and conditions of the work. Raising the status of the workers as the citizen of the industry and of society. Extending the areas of social control of the nations economic life and participating in that control. Trade union represent individual workers, negotiate with the employer, safeguard the interest of the employee also provide Education and training to the employees. provide legal assistance to the employees. Financial discounts. work for the welfare of the workers. The existence of strong and recognized union is a prerequisite to industrial peace decision taken through the process of collective bargaining and negotiation between employers and union are more influential. Trade unions plays an important role and are helpful in effective communication between employees and management they provide the

advice and support to ensure that the difference of opinion do not turn into major conflicts. The central function of trade union is to represent people at work, they play a vital role in protecting there interests. Trade union help in accelerating pace of economic development in many ways as follow: By helping in recruitment and selection of workers. By inculcating discipline among the workforce. By enabling settlement of industrial dispute in a rational manner. By helping in social adjustment. Incorporate a sense of corporate social responsibility in workers (C.B.Mamoria).1 TRADE UNION IN INDIA At present there are 12 central trade union organizations in India as:AITUC BMS CITU HMKP HMS IFFTU INTUC NFITU NLO TUCC UTUC UTUC All India Trade Union Congress. Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh. Centre of Indian Trade Union. Hind Mazdoor kisan panchayat. Hind Mazdoor Sabha. Indian Federation of Free Trade Unions. Indian Trade Union Congress. National Front of Indian Trade Union. National Labour organization. Trade Union Coordination Centre. United Trade Union Congress. United Trade Union Congress (Lenin Saroni).

Actually in 1900 to 1946 many unions formed under the guidance of M.K.Gandhi this union federation into industrial union known as Textile Labour Association in 1920. In this year the first national trade union organization AITUC was established. In 1926 trade union law came up with the efforts of N.M.Joshi that became operative from 1927. (C.B.Mamoria, Dr.Satish Mamoria, S.V.Gankar).1

BASIC TERMS OF THE PROPOSED RESEARCH STUDY

Trade union: - It is any combination whether temporary or permanent formed primarily for the purpose of regulating the industrial relations (C.B.Mamoria).1 According to Dale Yoder A trade union is a continuous association of wage earners for the purpose of maintaining or improving the condition of their working lives. (C.B.Mamoria).1 Role: - An expected behavior associated with a particular position or status in a group or organization (dictionary.com). Function: - It means an activity of the person or institution in relation to the purpose for which they exist (dictionary.com). 3.0 A BRIEF SKETCH OF BANK OF BARODA

Bank of Baroda was established in 1908 it was founded by Maharaja Sayaji Rao Gaekwad it was started with the paid up capital of RS 10 lakhs. Presently it has a network of 2884 branches across India. It has 72 branches in 25 countries. Bank of Baroda is a provider of banking service. It operates in four segment treasury, corporate banking, retail banking, and other banking operations.

The banks e-business department provides a range of alternate delivery channel (ADC) such as ATM, internet banking, real time gross settlement, phone banking, and internet payment gateway. In addition it also provides services as depository service, cash management, non residence Indians services and sale of gold coins. The corporate office of Bank of Baroda is located at Mandvi (Baroda). Its regional office is at sayajigunj (Baroda).

Our mission statement

During the fiscal year ended March 31 2011 BOB opened seven branches including one for its overseas subsidiaries. Bank of Baroda has a profile of near 39313 employees presently employed at Baroda city its total income noted during the year ended March 2011 was RS 246951.016 million and net profit was RS 42416.797 million.

Structure of trade union In Bank of Baroda three unions are at force 1. AIBOBOA (All India Bank of Baroda Officers Association) Registered under trade union act 1926 affiliated to INTUC and INBOC. 2. Bank of Baroda Employees Association affiliated with AIBEA (All India Bank Employees Association). It has membership of 7.20 lakhs members. It is a major union in whole banking sector. Bank of Baroda Karmachari Sangh affiliated under All India Bank of Baroda Employees Federation affiliated under national conference of bank employees. It is affiliated with union network international. This union has 800 members at Baroda. It is one of the well known unions for sole bargaining in bank of Baroda. (http:// www.bankofbaroda.co.in)

REVIEW OF LITERATURE

Trade unions are a major components of the system of modern industrial relation in any nation each having in their constitution their own set of objectives or goals to achieve. DANKERT (1948) in the book titled contemporary unionism described that A trade union is an organisation formed by the workers to protect their interest and improve their working condition among other goals. It is a continuous association of the wage earner for the purpose of maintaining and improving their conditions. 2 PIYALI GHOSE SHEFALI NANDAN AND ASHISH GUPTA In Asian academy of management journal vol 14 printed in January 2009 described the research study on The changing roles of trade union in India by Piyali Ghosh, Shefali Nandan and Ashish Gupta. They have described about the effects of trade union on quality of work life of workers present as National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) at Uchchar plant located at Uttar Pradesh of India.

The main objectives of the study were: To review changing pattern of trade union in the capitalist world. The Impact of changes on the industrial relation. To study the role of trade union at NTPC in enhancing quality of work life. Research Methodology used by them to collect information was Structured personal interviews conducted with chairpersons and union members at NTPC plant and other secondary data was collected through manuals, annual report, monthly newsletters and other companys publications. In the study any statistical tools were not used as data were of qualitative in nature. From their research they conclude that union at NTPC play an active role In maintaining good industrial relation and are also involved in Improving QWL of employees. (http://www.icmrindia.org/case studiesindia.htm) DIPAK MALIK 1989 the book titled Indian trade unionism in developmental perspective published by common wealth publishers New Delhi India. In the first edition of 1989 described about the role of trade union in a developing role of economy and its role in developed society as representation of class interest. The objective of the study by Dipak Malik was to assess particularly the socio-ideological role of trade union and working class especially INTIC and AITUC and other roles as collective bargaining, class interest, defender co-builders of the new policy and political economy.(Dipak Malik 1989).3 DR. JASPAL SINGH in the book named Indias Trade Union Leaders published in 1980 by National Publishing House New Delhi it is translated from the theses of Dr Jaspal Singh completed under supervision of Rene Koenig at university of Collogue (west Germany), the book described the rise of trade union in India and factors that plays and important role in formation of trade union. Trade union leaders are considered as the agents of social changes the main objective of study was to study the social background and personal qualities of the trade union leaders the process of recruitment and training, their functioning and relationship with the members, government, political parties, employers and society at large. RATIONAL OF THE PROPOSED RESEARCH STUDY

The proposed research study will focus on the views of the managers and the union members about the union present at Bank of Baroda and its role and functioning in bank. 6.0 SCOPE AND COVERAGE OF THE PROPOSED RESEARCH STUDY

The project work will attempt to focus on evaluation and reporting of views of selected respondents of union in Bank of Baroda located at Baroda city. 7.0 1.

OBJECTIVES OF THE PROPOSED RESEARCH STUDY To review the objectives of trade union at Bank of Baroda. To know the views of union members towards the activities of the trade union. To determine the effectiveness of the functions performed by Trade union of Bank of Baroda. To view the effects of union activities on management of Bank of Baroda. RESEARCH METHODOLOGY 8.1 RESEARCH DESIGN Research design of the proposed project work considering its rationale, objectives and scope and coverage will be descriptive in nature. 8.2 SOURCES OF INFORMATION 8.2.1 Secondary Data The secondary data will be obtained from web sites, research articles, research papers, books, research journals, magazines, and other published as well as non published literature on the topic of proposed research study.

The primary data will be obtained from the selected respondents from Bank of Baroda located at Baroda. 8.3 RESEARCH INTRUMENT Structured non disguised questionnaire will be used as the research instrument by the researcher for the purpose of the proposed research study. 8.4 SAMPLING DECISIONS 8.4.1 Representative Sample The primary data will be obtained from selected union members and staff members of the Bank of Baroda at Baroda city. 8.4.2 Sampling Frame The details regarding staff members for the project work will be collected from the circular and register of the Bank of Baroda at Baroda city. 8.4.3 Sample Size Appropriate sample size will be put up to use for the purpose of obtaining primary data considering the objectives as well as scope and coverage of the proposed research study. 8.4.4 Sampling Design And Methods Non probability sampling design based on convenient sampling methods will be used for the purpose of the project work. 8.4.5 Sampling Media For the research study personal interview will be the sampling media.

DATA ANYLYSIS AND DATA INTERPRETATION

As the project work is in the nature of descriptive type it will involved the complete picture of members and staff opinion about trade union its role and function its pros and cons and their effects on the Bank of Baroda. 10.0 SIGNIFICANCE OF THE PROPOSED RESEARCH STUDY In such a competitive environment maintaining organization relation is very difficult. In organization where the level of hierarchy is very complex the subordinate will feel unsecured due to communication gap. Thus for achieving sound industrial relation it is essential to have union at the work place. The main significance of the study is to study role and function of trade union and its effects on the organization viz; Bank of Baroda. The project will provide an insight of the employees in the views of subject. The project will also show that how roles of trade union have definitely evolved from simply being protagonists of workers to ensuring better quality of work life, equipping members with knowledge, social welfare, industrial actions, political activities etc. 11.0 LIMITATIONS OF PROPOSED RESEARCH STUDY Every research conducted has certain limitations as: This survey covers only limited area of Bank of Baroda. Time to carry out survey will be limited. The primary data will be collected in the form of responses and it will be subjected to the involvement and information provided by respondents of the study.
