Progress Monitoring Norms for AIMSweb

Response to Intervention in Print!

Welcome to the first edition of The Intervention Insider. The goal of this newsletter is to provide you with information to help you navigate the world of RtI with a little bit more ease. I hope to use this newsletter to keep you updated with the progress that we are making in the world of RtI at the elementary level. This will also be another way to communicate and clarify our steps in developing a uniform RtI model for our district. You will see answers to commonly asked questions throughout the district, updates on whats new concerning RtI, resources for interventions, and a whole host of other things as we work through implementing this model. If you would like to see information on a particular topic, dont hesitate to contact me about including it in the newsletter. There will also be times when you may notice the same information re-appearing in these newsletters. Please note that this information is important and always something to consider when working through RtI issues. I am so excited to begin sending information through a newsletter in addition to the blog that I have established. It is my hope that having a variety of ways to access information will keep confusion to a minimum and allow for a more unified approach to RtI between all of the elementary schools. Thank you for taking the time to read through this newsletter. As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please contact me and I will be happy to assist you in any way that I can.

As many of you are beginning to enter progress monitoring data for students using AIMSweb, I have been asked what norms to use. For fluency probes (R-CBM) please refer to the Rasinski Norms. Choose the Spring rate on the grade level of which you are assessing to set as the students goal. You may set it at the lowest in the range that is listed under Spring. These norms are located on my blog in case you have misplaced the information that was distributed at the trainings. For all other types of probes, refer to the AIMSweb Norms in those particular areas which can be found under the Reports tab when you are logged in to AIMSweb. If you need a more detailed explanation as to how to locate these norms please contact me. I can also email a pdf file to you with the norms in the other areas if you send me a request for this information.

October RtI Meeting Days Benton Oct. 26th Calvert Oct. 17th Central Oct. 27th Jonathan Oct. 13th Sharpe Oct. 12th South Oct. 18th I appreciate all of the support Ive seen from the faculty and administrators at these meetings. I know it seems like weve gotten off to a slow start, but all of the organization will pay off and next year it should be an even smoother start. I LOVE the discussions we are having about our kids! I leave these days feeling like you are all truly committed to each and every student in your classroom. Thank you for sacrificing a planning time to meet with me!

RTI AWARENESS TRAINING HI-LIGHTS

I first want to thank you all for attending the RtI awareness training for your grade level. I truly appreciate your interest in wanting to learn more about the RtI process and the steps involved to creating a successful model for our district. You will notice in the left-hand column of this page, I have included key points that were made during the training. If you need more information on anything that was discussed I will be happy to meet with you and go over it. The most important point that I want to make sure that everyone understands about RtI is that it is very prescriptive to each particular child. We are all, in a way, like doctors (however, the pay is slightly less). We diagnose the deficit, prescribe the intervention, and then intervene. More and more I feel that the RtI mantra should be, Diagnose. Prescribe. Intervene. It is important to keep this in mind when selecting interventions for our students.

KEY POINTS OF INTEREST: RtI is a general education initiative. High-quality instruction and interventions are matched to student need. Progress needs to be monitored frequently to make decisions about change in instruction. In order to reduce number of RtI students in Tiers II and III, work to improve the quality of Tier I instruction differentiate!!! Tier II Frequency 60 150 min. weekly in addition to core Tier III Frequency 180 300 min. weekly in addition to core A Learning Disability is a gap or discrepancy between what a student should be able to do (IQ/ability) and what a student is actually doing (performance/achievement).

This year has gotten off to a great start with PBIS in all of the schools! Remember that PBIS is the Universal or Tier I level of the behavior pyramid. It is so important to follow the policies and procedures that your school has established. Consistency is key and it helps us target those students that do not respond to the universal procedures that we have in place. I truly appreciate all of the hard work that has gone in to establishing this system in your school. Pat your PBIS team members on the back the next time you see them they have been doing an outstanding job. Now that we are returning from Fall Break, it is a good idea to review the policies and procedures with your students. I have seen several schools encourage positive practice in common areas to remind students of the expectations we have set for them. We cant assume they know what to do, we must continue to teach them and show them what we expect. Let me know if I can be of further assistance. Jason Teague

TECH BYTES As I mentioned in the last few moments of the RtI awareness training, we are currently working on developing software to track student progress. Yes, I know we use AIMSweb to track certain skills and I know we can create our own graphs for other areas we are progress monitoring, but wouldnt it be great to have it all in one location? One user-friendly program that we could use to enter all of our progress monitoring data from reading to math to writing to behavior and beyond? Well, thats what we are hoping to attempt. Over fall break I met with our programmer again and we discussed lay-outs and basic information that we want for this program. The most important component that we want this program to include is not only graphing and progress monitoring data, but a database that houses all of the information unique to that particular student. So in a nutshell, when we pull up that student in our computer files, we will be able to access everything we have been putting in our student Support Plans. We will be able to see what they are receiving in their core, all of the interventions they have received and are receiving, how many weeks they have been receiving interventions, classroom accommodations/modifications, etc. all attached to their goals for each area and the graphs with progress monitoring data. This is still a work in progress, but were hoping to have a base model design in the near future. There are also several spin-off ideas weve had as weve begun the initial design which we hope to develop and enhance as we begin to use this software. Im just very excited to get the opportunity to work on something like this that will possibly make the world of RtI monitoring much easier. I am also starting to see how this could possibly benefit our special education department as well. All in all, it is very excitingwell, a nerdy kind of exciting, but exciting nonetheless. Ill keep you updated as we progress.

AND NO, WE DON'T KNOW WHERE IT WILL LEAD. WE JUST KNOW THERE'S
SOMETHING MUCH BIGGER THAN ANY OF US HERE.
