Language Policy and Implementation Plan/Language Indaba


(Items 6.1, dated 20 November 2008; 6.1, dated 7 May 2009, 5.1 8 September 2010)

Background: Resolved that in order for the Language Policy, which had been adopted in 2006, to remain applicable and up to date, the proposal for the revision of the Policy be supported; Prof PH Havenga convene a Task Team consisting of the following members to prepare a working document on the revision of the Language Policy for consideration at the next meeting of the Committee: 1. 2. 3. Senate report on Im plem entation of the Sena

On 8 September 2010, the Senate Language Committee resolved as follows: 1.The Language Policy be submitted to Senate for approval.

2.To

appoint a Task Team consisting of Prof PH Havenga, Prof RMH Moeketsi, Prof SB Mboup (Chairperson) and Dr M Ferreira to look for a suitable date before the end of the year or early in the next year for the holding of a Language Indaba. The language experts and other relevant people would be invited to attend the Language Indaba to advise on the implementation of the Language Policy.

3.The UNESCO document, the Disa report on language preferences of students at Unisa and the Language Policy form the basis of documents for discussion at the Language Indaba. On 4 April 2011, the Senate Language Committee resolved as follows: After considering the report of the task team, the Senate Language Committee resolved that a workshop to consider the implementation plan be arranged and that the task team make presentations regarding specific project plans for implementation

STANDING ITEM Academy of African Languages and Sciences


Background: Item 6.1, 4 April 2011 On 4 April 2011, the Senate Language Committee resolved that: 1. That Prof Mboup should consult with the Pan South African Language Board (PanSALB) and the Department of Language Services to clarify certain issues in the report. That the team should put short- and long-term plans in place to be able to achieve their goals. That a final document that would include the operational plan and the Strategy and Planning Coordination Committee. funding document be submitted to the committee at the next meeting.
