WEB CALCULATOR EXERCISE 2

Z test & One sample t-test
1. A researcher is interested in whether students who attend private high schools have

higher average SAT Scores than students in the general population. A random sample of 90 students at a private high school is tested and and a mean SAT score of 1030 is obtained. The average score for public high school student is 1000 (= 200). a. Is this a one- or two tailed test? This is a one-tailed test because the alternative hypothesis predicts that students who attend private schools will have higher average SAT scores that students from the general population. What are H0 and Ha for this study? The H0 for this experiment is that the mean of the SAT scores of the private school students is less than the mean of the SAT scores from the general population.
b.

The Ha is the mean of the SAT scores from the private school students is greater than the scores from the general population. Compute Z obt The Standard error of the mean is the standard deviation divided by the square root of the sample size. So, it is 200/90. Z obt is 21.08
c.

For the Z test formula, it is the mean from the sample minus the population mean divided by the standard error of the mean. So it is (1030-1000)/ 21.08 Z= 1.42 http://web2.0calc.com/ d. What is the Z critical value (Z cv ) using a 0.05 alpha level? Zcv is +/- 1.64 http://easycalculation.com/statistics/z-critical-value.php
e.

Should H0 be rejected? What should the researcher conclude?

No, H0 should not be rejected because the test scores do not differ significantly in their difference. f. Determine the 95 % confidence interval for the population mean, based on the sample mean. 1030 1.96 (21.08) = lower 988.68 higher 1071.3

2. A researcher hypothesized that the pulse rates of long-distance athletes differ from those

of other athletes. He believed that the runners pulses would be slower. He obtained a random sample of 10 long-distance runners. He measured their resting pulses. Their pulses were 45, 45, 64, 50, 58, 49, 47, 55, 50, 52 beats per minute. The average resting pulse of athletes in the general population is normally distributed with a pulse rate of 60 beats per minute. a. What statistical test should be used to analyze the data? The single-sample t-test should be used to analyze the data. b. Is this a one- or two- tailed test? This is a one-tailed test because the researcher hypothesized than the runners pulses would be slower than the other athletes pulses.
c. What are H0 and Ha for this study?

The H0 is that the pulses of the runners will be slower than the pulse rates of the other athletes. The Ha is that the pulses of the other athletes will be slower than the runners pulse rates.
d. Find tcv from appendix A in Jacksons text.

Df = N 1. Df = 9 Alpha= .05 So, using p. 384 in Jackson (2009), tcv is 1.833

e. Compute t obt

t obt= - 4.46 http://studentsttest.com/

f. Should H0 be rejected? What should the researcher conclude?

Yes. The null hypothesis should be rejected because the pulse rates of the runners were found to be significantly slower than the other athletes.
3. A researcher hypothesizes that people who listen to music via headphones have greater

hearing loss and will thus score lower on a hearing test than those in the general population. On a standard hearing test, the overall mean for the general population is 22.5. The

researcher gives this same test to a random sample of 12 individuals who regularly use headphones. Their scores on the test are 15, 14, 20, 20, 25, 22, 21, 19, 16, 17, 21, 22. a. What statistical test should be used to analyze the data? A single-sample t-test should be used to analyze the date. b. Is this a one- or two- tailed test? This is a one-tailed test
c. What are H0 and Ha for this study?

The H0 is that people who listen to music via headphones will score higher on the hearing test than the general population. The Ha is that people who listen go music via headphones will score lower on the hearing test than the general population.
d. Compute t obt

t obt= -3.37 http://studentsttest.com/

e. Should H0 be rejected? What should the researcher conclude?

Yes, H0 should be rejected because the scores of the people using the headphones were significantly lower than the scores of the general population. Based on these statistics, this researcher can conclude that people who use headphones to listen to music will score lower on a hearing test than the general population will.
