3:45 a.m. Naomie's Testimony of What
Happened Through the Night
] talked to you last at 10:30 p. m. last night. The
Lord allowed you to have your natural strength
back. Your session lightened up until midnight
again, when He took you back into very strong
training and atonement.
You had called Ernest Jessop earlier. You
called him and Jerold Williams, and David Allred
and gave them some instructions. You told Ernie
that you wouldn't be coming that way tomorrow.
After you went back into session -- you were in the
chair -- you had Patricia and Tammy and] in here
to rub you. You couldn't take it right then. As you
were taken back into session, you laid so that your
head was on the arm of the chair. Your body
jerked and trembled andjolted. You groaned and
sighed. You went unconscious for about ten
minutes and then came to again, still suffering and
atoning.
At 1:00 0 'clock a.m. you sat back up. You
hadn't really said anything during that time. At
1 :30 a.m. you groaned and sighed and said, "] will
do it. ] will do it." You said, "This work must go
on. 1f must contInue. At 1 :43 a.m. your body was
trembling, jerking and jolting. You said, "The
Lord is allowing me to make an atonement." At
2:000 'clock a.m. you said, "] tremble, yearn, and
weep for Zion. Who is Zion?" You said, "The
Lord is watching us so closely." You said, "] will
be sending a few back today. "
Did I name them?
You didn't name any names. You said, "Some
of my family." That is all you said. You didn't
name any names. At 2: 1 0 a.m. you said, "The Lord
allowed the wall of opposition to be put back a
little." You said, "If we would befaithful the Lord
wouldn't even allow the wicked to come upon this
land. They wouldfear to. " At 2:30 a.m. you said,
"The Lord will yet have me go to R17 by the 5
th
of
May. He wants me there on the 5
th
.
You said, "He is revealing more marriages to
be done, more trainings to give." You said that
you would be taking care of Joseph Fischer's wife
Beverly, also Uncle Joe's wife Janice, Louis
Barlow's wife Loana. You said that Janice would
be going to Richard Allred. You didn't name
where Beverley would go. You said that Loana
would be going to Stephen Harker for time only.
You said the Lord is showing you that if Louis
Barlow isn't careful, in his anger, he would turn
traitor. He has totally lost the Spirit of God. You
said, "Also his son Tom has lost the Spirit of God
and will not --. "
At 2:50 a.m. you said you would also be
training more men. You didn't name any names.
You said, "All these men professed great loyalty.
They must realize they haven't come to the full
repentance the Lord requires. They are not just on
a mission. This is a judgment on them. They must
accept it. "
At 3:00 0 'clock a.m. you groaned and sighed
and said, "Okay, okay." You said that you would
be going to do these weddings and give the
training before you left to go to R17. You would be
here for the weekend for whatever the Lord had in
mindfor you. You said, "There is still something]
must go through." You said the Lord is showing
you many things that He is not allowing you to say
but in time they will be revealed. You said, "He is
allowing us to continue on. The brethren must be
more united and stop thinking they can
compromise. They cannot." You said it with great
emphasis. You said, "The brethren will not and
cannot compromise or else] will send them away. "
You said, "For now the Lord has not named any
who should go, just some of my family." Then you
came to at 3: 15 a.m.
At 5:00 0 'clock a.m. this morning you said that
you would be sending a few people back, of your
family. You said that in order for the Lord to keep
us going there must be a greater oneness. You
said, "There is a degree of oneness growing.
There must be a greater oneness among us." At
5:15 a.m. your body jolted and trembled quite
severely. As you were trembling you were shining
so bright, so bright. ] moved closer to the wall to
give you room. As] looked back at you, ] couldn't
see you any more, but ] could feel the bed was
moving. So] sat up a little bit. Then you weren't
there. You were gone for about fifteen minutes,
until 5:45 a.m. As] saw you, that thrill of the
Record of President Warren Jeffs Page 1 Saturday, May 1,2004
all-consuming fire went through me. I felt that
rushing wind on my face. I could hear it. You were
still shining so bright. You said, "The Lord hath
done it. "
At 5:50 a.m. you said, "The Lord wants me to
send Jen and Jessica." You named one other
person but I couldn't tell what you said. It sounded
like you said, "Sheena," but she is already in Short
Creek. That is all you named.
You said, "There are a few others," but you
didn't name anyone else. You said, "The Lord has
a correction for the men at R23, for the
compromises they made, for even thinking to
compromise." You said you would be sending
Nathanael Allred back for a time. If he would
humble himself, he could quickly return because
he has been a strength. He has got to just quit
doubting himself, which takes away the greater
strength that he could be.
You came to at 6:00 0 'clock a.m. I started to
tell you what had been happening. At 6:20 a.m.
you said, "I well also be sending back little
Patricia and Jacob and Amber and Melissa." At
6:30 a.m. you said, "I cannot compromise the
redemption of Zion for anyone and I will not. We
must come up to the mark if we want to remain on
these places of refuge." You said, "The Lord's
schedule can and must be met without any
(;@1'HfJ!'@l'HiG9 @]G ]G96HJ@19ing :6i!W:6i!y who". 11'8 8:6i!m96( ti8
it. "
At 6:50 a.m. you said, "Oh, my. Oh, my. What
is happening? What is happening to me?" You
said, "If I have to send my whole family back, I
will. The Lord isn't having me do that right now.
Some of them are obtaining the faith necessary. "
You said, "We must come to it quickly. " That is the
last thing you said before you came to.
8:08 a.m. Calling R23
Correction to the Men
Good morning. You have them gathered? How
many men are there?
Response: Nineteen
Okay. The others got off in time. And what
trailers did they take? Okay. If you can put it on
speaker phone, I will see if they can hear me.
Good morning, brethren.
Response: Good morning!
I am grateful that I can talk to you. You can hear
me good?
Response: Yes.
I have a message from the Lord for you, both a
training and correction and desire the Spirit of God
to be with me and you. I love you and I have been
yearning for your success there. When the Lord
gives a commandment, He expects to be obeyed,
and as the Prophet Nephi explained a relationship
of obedience with the Lord, that when the Lord
gives a commandment, He always provides a way
to accomplish what He commands. We also know
how the Spirit of God touched the Prophet Joseph
Smith as a young man when he read the words of
James: "If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of
God." "Who giveth liberally and upbraideth not,"
means He is not trying to stop you. He wants to
bless you. But then the Prophet James declared,
"But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering, for he
that wavereth is as the wave of the sea, driven with
the wind and tossed." The wavering is the little
doubt where you start to wonder if it can really be
done, whatever the Lord calls on you to do. And
this is what the Lord has shown me is in the minds
and hearts of some of you. And even as you neared
the end of April 30, yesterday, even some of the
managers that were organizing started looking for
enetises: "Tftis w6tilti fttlf'l"en anti that h6tllti
happen to slow us up," or the attitude for the last
few days has been, "What is the priority? What do
we have to get done, and we will finish the rest
later;" also any compromises on what should be
done, trying to find a fast way, this or that to not do
it quite as the Lord directs. These attitudes are still
among the brethren.
I am so grateful how you have given your all
physically day and night, not being around your
families. But the Lord has shown me that we were
not favored there at R23 because there was some
that held on to the doubts and have not learned to
exert that devoted faith, that gift of oneness. Even
if you doubt yourself and your own abilities to do,
and wonder if you are holding this work back, you
are dwelling on the failure instead of the success.
The Lord loves this group of brethren very
greatly. Individuals are qualifying. I gave you the
Lord's message, how the power of oneness is
Saturday, May 1, 2004 Page 2 Record of President Warren Jeffs
exerted. Last Sunday I delivered that message and
you were put to the test this week. The Lord is
going to clean us up, those who need to go back to
Short Creek and develop the faith, build up the
good work there, will do so. Others will remain at
R23 and some go to R17 tomorrow.
I say to you brethren, when the Lord gives a
commandment, even in earthly affairs, don't even
think we can go a moment beyond what He says,
and you are seeking revelation and the gifts and
strength that it can be done. To even think, "Well,
what will we leave to do after April 30?" was a
declaration of failure in this mission, when all the
time we should have been reaching how to get
done earlier so we could be ready for the next
mission. Think how this would cloud the great
mission and the short time schedule at R17 if you
go there with a doubt. And this cannot be,
brethren. The power of oneness is heaven-sent,
not of earthly strength alone. You are being
trained to exert the faith like the Prophet Nephi,
like the brother of Jared, and this is what the Lord
expects of all of us. Now the Lord has named May
5 as a date that cannot be a failure. It must be a
success, the storehouse established there with the
goods there and the refrigerator and freezer rooms
done. There needs to be a strong effort there for
those who remain.
Can you still hear me? Brother Jerold and Ben
and Rich will be staying there, Mike Emack and
Luke Jessop, Warren Johnson Sr. and Warren
Johnson Jr., Guy Jessop. I have Nathaniel Allred,
and I will also leave Isaac Steed at R23, if you will,
until May 5. Tomorrow morning, Brother
Abraham Draper is to lead the rest of you to R 17,
going down 125 and on down the way you came.
Also Wendell Jeffs remain until May 5 with his
wife. We need this storehouse established and
operating by May 5, the Lord has directed. I have
sent David Allred back to Short Creek to
coordinate the flow of those goods with the
Bishop. So I hope that gives you sufficient help,
Brother Jerold, to carry this out. So on my list I
have Abraham Draper, Allan Keate, Jacob
Johnson, Joseph Steed, Jacob Allred, Paul Allred,
and Richard Barlow that will go to R17 tomorrow.
Is my list accurate?
Response: I think so.
This is a great training, brethren, and the Lord is
so patient with us. You must realize that this is
Zion's Camp, an advance company preparing the
way for our people against a time of life or death
need. That is how serious it will be. Though you
can't see it, even your own families will have great
need of blessings. The Lord has promised instant
renewal and strength when you are tired. And I
know you have given so much. And I say again,
individuals are qualifying. But for oneness to
exist, every person is needed to succeed in that
exercise of perfect faith, no doubt. And perfect
faith requires dwelling in revelation, what to do
next and how to do.
To even say, "Only so and so can do this kind of
work," and, "All this is on their shoulders," means
that others are not willing to learn where revelation
could be given you how to learn a skill quickly and
be a strength. For instance, to say, "Brother Mike
Emack and Luke Jessop have all this work to do,"
means you haven't been appointing by revelation
who else could learn those skills or assist and have
the Lord add to them a knowledge they didn't have
before. We limit ourselves and say, "So and so
knows this, but he doesn't know that." We all need
to be willing to learn quickly and believe the Lord
can reveal the skills needed.
You know the Lord is watching you so closely,
brethren, and He wants to bless you. Let us not
have another place where Zion was almost
redeemed. But the Lord is establishing that land
and will only leave there those that will be Zion. I
love you and He is giving you this time. You who
go to R17, go with full faith. Some of you still
reason in your thinking with earthly judgment,
earthly strength. It has displeased the Lord how
some of you brethren think, judging this project
through earthly judgment, and you begin to
compromise His schedule.
You look at all creation around you and see
there is a power beyond mortal man upholding all
things. This is the project of that great Creator that
we are involved with. He is able to add to us
knowledge and strength and skills beyond what we
know if we will have the faith and reach. And what
He is really after is to bring forth a group of men
who can receive those gifts and honor Him. You
should be, each one, a person developing the faith
of the brother of Jared, walking in revelation,
Record of President Warren Jeffs Page 3 Saturday, May 1, 2004
reaching for the gifts and skills to do as the Lord
commands without a compromise.
So let us go forward and learn the lesson. He is
reading your hearts. Those that do qualify will be
blessed. I yearn that all of you will be qualified so
that we can have the gift and power of oneness
exerted. You are not just doing a physical labor.
You are reaching for the strength of heaven,
developing a living power with God, walking and
talking with Him through prayer and revelation,
and the angels attend you, and the Lord is near. All
of you have been called by revelation. I yearn that
this Zion's Camp the Lord is bringing forth will
seek for the power from on high in all they do.
What you are really qualifying for is the presence
of God by living in the increase of His Spirit
through your living faith, and doing all that you do
with the strength of heaven.
I know the Presiding Elder there, Brother
Jerold, has been pleading with the Lord for
guidance and strength for himself and the crew.
For the Lord to honor our prayers, there must be
the exertion of oneness, and just one person with a
doubt destroys that oneness. And when you begin
reasoning in the ways of your own judgment, that
you have to set some things aside and get other
things done and not meet the Lord's schedule, that
means you have already declared your lack of
faith. So let us learn this lesson, brethren. This has
eXlste among us. There will be a people who will
have that faith to do whatever the Lord directs.
Why not us? Remember the promise of our time
that one will chase a thousand of the enemy and
two will chase ten thousand, when the enemy
thinks thousands are chasing after them. We so
easily tum to our earthly judgment and feelings
and introduce a compromise.
So let us learn this lesson, and I give this
message of the Lord and call upon you brethren to
reach for the gift of oneness, exert it, and let there
be no doubt, and meet the Lord's schedule.
Brother Jerold, send your drivers for the
storehouse goods. Be in contact with David, and I
will be calling the Bishop to make sure things are
in motion today on the storehouse goods.
The Lord bless you, brethren. I am right with
you in ways you don't understand. The Lord and
the Prophets are watching. Is this the group of
brethren that tum to the Lord in full faith and
receive the strength of heaven to do His will
without a compromise; giving your all physically,
yes, but reaching for and receiving a strength,
heaven-sent? Zion will be redeemed with power
from on high. I know the Lord has performed
many miracles for you. Some of you have
witnessed this. Our testimonies should be
increasing.
I pray the Lord to bless you and I will be in
contact. Continue on today, brethren, and thank
you for all you do. You who have come to this
project as your first project, this is your first
learning experience on this mission. Others have
been to several projects. Everyone humble
themselves, that perhaps even you could do better
in dwelling in the strength of heaven, the love of
the Father exerted, casting off all doubt and fearful
feelings.
Okay. Continue on. I love you, and let us meet
the Lord's schedule of May 5. Let me talk to
Jerold now, if you would pick up the phone.
Jerold? Hello
[Called back]
.... did they receive this message from the Lord,
if you would ask them. Okay. I have been directed
of the Lord to send Nathaniel Allred home. Do you
have a truck oin toward ?
Well, he is being sent back to not return for a time,
so he needs to go with a ride. I will talk to him on
the phone here for a minute, give him his
instructions. He is being released from the crew
and will stay in Short Creek until I call him forth
again. So if you have another person, for instance,
a truck going for storehouse goods or trailers, he
could ride along. All right. Let me talk to him,
please. When can you send a truck? Who will be
driving? Very good. Have him go back with
Mormon. That is why I gave you some other men
on your crew, okay? I will leave Wendell Jeffs and
Isaac Steed there till May 5. Let us get the
storehouse operating.
I will have David Allred some means by tonight
to put into your bank account, and we will get on
top of that. Be wise in the use of your cash so you
have some on hand for your travels and emergency
purchases, okay? And I will be able to send you
more cash soon. In your rides back and forth we
Saturday, May 1, 2004 Page 4 Record of President Warren Jeffs
can send a package to you. Heaven bless you on
your way. Let me talk to Nathaniel.
Good morning. Thank you for all you do. The
Lord has a correction for you, and I want you to
take it right. You are being released from this work
crew and you are to return to Short Creek as they
go get storehouse goods today in one of the trucks.
The Lord has shown me that you continue to carry
a doubt about yourself, being down on yourself,
and it weakens you so the strength of heaven
doesn't dwell in you as it should. But He wants
you to go back to Short Creek, work for David, be a
strength there and what I need done, perhaps even
help me when I come there. But if you will repent
and sacrifice this doubt and fear of yourself
qualifying, you can repent quickly and return ,
because we need your help. All isn't lost, but the
Lord is releasing you from the crew, wants you to
go back to Short Creek and develop the strength
you need to be one hundred percent faith with Him,
okay? I have just told Jerold that you will be
driving back with Mormon in the run to Short
Creek today.
Are you staying there on the property? Where
is your wife staying right now? Okay, I want you
and Sam, if Guy has room, both of you and your
ladies move over to Guy's house when you arrive.
I am moving others there. Robert will be there, and
Seth and his wife will be there, your brother. They
are moving back to Short Creek. Then you and
Sam move over to Guy's and just report to David
and help out on the projects there in Short Creek,
okay?
The Lord bless you and I will be in contact, and
you be in contact with me. Write me a good letter
of testimony and reveal what is in your mind and
heart, but look forward and not be discouraged.
Continue on, dear brother. I love you and want you
with us, okay? Good-bye.
12:31 p.m. Lunch at Rl
What have you been doing better today after
you heard that training? I would like to hear from
somebody. You learned how to be constantly
fervent in yoru love for Heavenly Father. Or have
you just been doing the same old thing? Any
blessing should do what? Remind you of what?
Of the Giver of the blessing, right? Have you just
been getting blessings today and not thinking a
thank-you prayer to Him? Have you just been
doing the same old thing? When a training is given
then the test is did you do it? So don't forget the
trianing. That means you are not living it. When
you forget the trianing, you are not living it. When
you live it you don't forget it. Okay.
Naomie, please. Come up, Kate. The Lord is
watching you, so all of you dress right. Go ahead,
Nomie.
Prayer: Naomie
2:00 p.m. Dictation
My last dictation was yesterday morning. I
spent much of yesterday reading the mail from the
people, the letters. There were many encouraging
letters. Some were from people whose mothers
were recently sealed to other fathers, former
children of these Barlow men. The letters that
were written to me were in full support of what the
Lord was having done. I did have letters from
some of the morals troubles people, yearning for
rebaptism. The Lord whispered to me that two
people should be rebaptized, and I called the
Bishop in Short Creek, William Jessop, and told
him to [have] he and his counselors take care of the
baptism of Martha Emack, and also I directed him
to rebaptize Marty Jessop, the son of Dee Jessop.
Both had written me letters, very humble and
sweet and the Good Spirit said go forward with
rebaptism. I read other letters from other people
who were asking for rebaptism, but the Spirit said,
"No," on the others for now.
In talking to William Jessop, last night -- put in
the record that those people were rebaptized -- I
asked William Jessop where all the baptism
records were and he said they are in the missionary
report envelopes. So we need to go through all
those missionary report envelopes and give to
Mother Merilyn because she is recording the Short
Creek ordinances for me. Ordinances are only
being performed for the people in Short Creek as
the Lord gives a specific directive.
I felt the yearning all day within for the laborers
to be strengthened, knowing that April 30
th
was the
scheduled time to have R23 houses complete. I
called R23 about 7:00 p.m. and in listening to Rich
Allred and Mike Emack, what was happening
there, the brethren there were taking on the attitude
of compromise. They had stopped thinking they
Record of President Warren Jeffs Page 5 Saturday, May 1, 2004
could get the work done and were deciding what
was most important to get done. And I understood
what that meant, that we had displeased the Lord
and not met His scheduled time of completion. So
I retired to my room around 7:30 p.m. and very
shortly after, feeling the weight of this, the Lord
took me into a heavenly session until about 9:30
p.m. where I was shown that the Lord was
displeased with the workers at R23 in South
Dakota and certain names of the workers were
given to travel to R17 at 4:00 a.m. in the morning
and others would stay another day and a few others
would stay until May 5
th

I was in the heavenly session through the night.
Marriages were named, corrections were named
for the brethren. One worker was to be sent back,
Nathanael Allred. Also names were given of who
to send to Short Creek from R17, from Texas. I
have had Isaac Jeffs there with the mobile home
waiting for my call. My scribe and helpmate
witnessed that I was taken away physically this
morning and in returning named the names of
certain people to be corrected and removed from
the places of refuge.
As I gained my strength this morning, I called
R23, where Jerold Williams is the presiding Elder.
The men gathered, and I called as they gathered. I
gave a strong warning and training on oneness and
that they had compromised this mission. I told
Jerold when he picked up the phone alone that
Nathaniel Allred was to be sent back with the next
trip to Short Creek. I then talked to Nathanael
Allred and told him he would return to Short Creek
and work on his faith and preparation and if he
would do it quickly, we would call him back into
serVIce.
Oh, the day before, I called David on Friday,
April 30
t
h, yesterday, and told him to leave by 4:00
a.m. in the morning and bring Mother Susan who
has an infection on her leg and now through her
bloodstream and also take back to Short Creek
Seth Allred and his wife Shirley Allred, my
daughter, who had been struggling in her feelings,
needing to learn greater faith. Seth Allred goes
with the approval of God and the Prophet. He has
done well. I instructed David to have Seth Allred
with Shirley move onto the property in the same
house as Robert Allred, the Jeffs block property,
and to have Nathanael Allred and Samuel Allred
move to Guy Allred's house, and we arranged this
morning for Nathanael Allred to move to that
apartment on David Allred's property.
I had called the Bishop last night and told him to
print up a previous handout that had three of my
talks, November 10, 2002, was the first meeting.
We found the disks and tapes here at Rl and I had
Seth leave about 2:00 a.m. in the morning and
travel to Short Creek with those tapes and he
arrived at 6:30 a.m. in time to fulfill the directive. I
had told William Jessop, the Bishop, to play the
recording of my talk and have a handout on every
chair where every person could read along with my
talk. These three sermons in the handout are on the
redemption of Zion and describe the revelation of
the darling idols we must let go of to qualify for
Zion. I instructed the Bishop that for the next two
Saturday work meetings to play the tape of the
remaining two sermons, one each time as the
people now have the handout.
The letters I have received from the people in
Short Creek, many of them express gratitude to
have heard the retraining again that describes the
qualifications to be part of the redemption of Zion.
There are many people writing me letters yearning
for Zion, "yearning to come where I am," they say.
"We want to be where you are," is what many of
the letters say. I have received letters from both
sons and daughters of the men who have proved
unworthy for their families. Some express
surprise, yearnings, but all of them that I have
received thus far, except for Tom Barlow, have
expressed they support what the Lord is doing.
In LeGrande Barlow Allred's letter he
described how since Louis Barlow was handled,
Louis Barlow, his earthly father, has deteriorated
in spirit. I placed Sidney Barlow over Louis
Barlow's family to teach and train them for a time
until they were taken care of and [LeGrande
described] how Louis Barlow almost daily is angry
at Sidney and the family. His spirit has
deteriorated. Louis Barlow's expressions to me in
his letters are that he has upheavals of feelings, up
and down, and in the last letter that I received, that
I read yesterday, Louis Barlow expressed that all
he wants is Priesthood and he can tell by his
feelings being so uncontrolled that perhaps his
family and wives were his darling idols.
Saturday, May 1, 2004 Page 6 Record of President Warren Jeffs
These men who have been handled are
maintaining the idea that they are just going
through a test. I have had many people who have
gone to visit them write to me and say, "It is a
marvel how they are passing this test in the
sacrifice of all earthly things." Some people have
foolishly expressed now these men have their
calling and election sure, having sacrificed all
earthly things. And it is just not true. These men
have not repented. They have proved themselves
unworthy of their families. They cannot exalt their
families. What has happened to them is a
judgment of God where blessings are lost and now
those ladies are sealed for time and eternity to
other worthy men. This is a work of gathering for
the redemption of Zion by placing beside these
worthy men these families that need a Priesthood
connection for the next great trials.
In talking to the Bishop this morning, I told the
Bishop, this is Saturday morning now, that we
were needing to start shipping storehouse goods to
another place of refuge. I have told Jerold
Williams and the brethren at R23 that the
storehouse is to be operating and fully stocked by
May 5
th
and to not compromise that date with their
excuses. So I called the Bishop in Short Creek to
tell him that I was sending David Allred back to
Short Creek to work with the Bishop and start
sending semi-trailer loads of goods to R23. The
CtUcting COmpany we are usIng tOr the places of
refuge is under David Allred's businesses names.
The Bishop told me about Val Jessop, that three
children he had through Laurene have disappeared
with Laurene and now Laurene has got a court order
against her sister wife Marie, to have nothing to do with
those children. The children were staying with Marie
Cooke. Val Jessop has been handled, has been staying
at a trailer in Canebeds next to Short Creek. I told the
Bishop he needs to gather up those girls, those
daughters, because Laurene has terrible mental troubles
and is on heavy medication. One of Val Jessop's errors
is that he stayed connected to his first wife, estranged
wife, who is apostate when the Prophet Rulon Jeffs told
him to let that woman go, and he constantly accused his
second wife. This is another example of a man
promoting his own marriages. Uncle Roy even
reproved him for it but then went ahead with the sealing
and they have had hell in their home ever since because
these daughters of Jack Cooke were abused but carried
their bad feelings into their marriage. Val Jessop has
been so unwise, allowing these girls to go to
psychiatrist and therapies where the doctors were
immoral and invited the ladies to commit adultery, and
Val Jessop allowed those connections. But he doesn't
hold Priesthood, and I have sent word that instead of
those girls being with Laurene who isn't mentally
competent, that Val should see that they are taken care
of. Now there is a court order in place not allowing
those children to be with the other mother in Short
Creek.
In our conversation, the Bishop told me that he
just got a call from Joseph I. Barlow, who is
staying in St. George with several of the men who
have been handled, and Joseph I. Barlow told the
Bishop, "We, down here at St. George, are
grieving. We need you to come and comfort us."
The Bishop asked me what I thought he should do,
and I said, "Don't touch it. If those men have the
true Spirit of repentance, they will have a prayer of
rejoicing for the privilege to repent. Grieving
means they are in despair. Despair cometh
because of iniquity says the scripture." And I told
the Bishop that all he should do with these men in
their connections with him is to read Section 20
verse 37, on the requirements of rebaptism; and if
they can fulfill those requirements, the Lord will
direct them to go forward and earn what salvation
is within their reach. I strongly warned the Bishop,
WIlham Jessop, mat If he goes to comfort mese
men, he could fall into the trap of having sympathy
against authority against the will of God. And
Brother William readily agreed and took the
counsel and said he will be very careful.
I told the Bishop that he needs to tell these men
they are out of order. They keep meeting together
and teaching each other when not one of them has
the authority to teach. They each one need to get
close to the Lord and fully repent. I told him these
men have not repented yet. Even in their
confessions they haven't come forward and told
the truth. In the many letters I have received from
some of these men they have declared that they are
on a mission and going through a test. The Lord
showed me, and I have it recorded in my record
previously, that many of these men are putting on a
show of repentance to me but among themselves
they don't see why they are bing handled.
Record of President Warren Jeffs Page 7 Saturday, May 1,2004
I read a letter from my brother Hyrum Jeffs,
wherein he questioned the revelation the Lord had
given, wondering if he really had lost Priesthood,
which shows he hasn't fully repented. More and
more of these men that have been handled, over
forty in number, are despairing.
The Lord has protected me from some tricks of
the devil. Tom Barlow was visited by one of his
former wives and I got a letter with his wife's name
on the letter, but it was him that typed it. In that
letter it declared that she hoped, but it was Tom
Barlow writing it, but she hoped that not only
would they be restored, but she felt that he would
receive additional wives. The Lord detected that
and it was Tom Barlow himself writing the letter.
Then I got a pack of letters from Lorin
Johnson's children and Lorin Johnson himself. He
has not been handled, but he won't let go of his
adulterous former wife, who has been in rebellion
all her married life and she finally committed
adultery with Mark Zitting, a young man, and she
has several children -- Martha Ann Jessop, Uncle
Fred's step daughter, Joe C. Jessop's daughter. All
these children were told to write how they yearned
that their mother could return to their home
through Priesthood marriage. The Lord gave me a
special revelation concerning her and others, that
when a woman commits adultery she can't even be
considered to be restored until she pays the
penalty, which would be into the next life, unless
the Lord gives a direct commandment. I have told
Lorin Johnson that he may not get his wife again.
She is not worthy. I received a letter from Joseph
Rohbock who said that this woman, Martha Ann
Jessop, in her dark moments was calling him for
counsel and comfort. So she continues calling
young men. I am very concerned that she is a
plague among us, destroying young men. I will do
what the Lord directs.
The Lord is cleaning up this people. The day of
the halfhearted people is past. Some have
wondered why they can't have it as it was. It is
because the Lord's schedule, the Lord's time table
is progressing and only the pure in heart can be
called forth in the redemption of Zion. The foolish
virgins are being detected and many are not
virgins. I received a letter yesterday from Jesse
Jessop Jr., his confession being with the Clarence
Wayman girls. And that reminds me I need to send
that family away from Short Creek. The Lord
directed that, you remember? I haven't done that
yet. He touched these girls sexually, he helped
destroy other boys. Now he wants to come back.
He shouldn't be in our community.
I am talking to the Bishop while I am here about
the Clarence Wayman family.
Calling the Bishop in Short Creek,
William Edson Jessop
Hello, Brother William, you can hear me? Will you
please take care of something? The Lord directed a
little while back and I am just remembering to do it
now, to send away the Clarence Wayman family away
from Short Creek. Tell Clarence that I and the Lord
acknowledge that he has a testimony but his wife does
not and these girls need to leave the community, so the
whole family needs to leave and not be part of our
community. Can you see to that?
William Edson Jessop: Yes, sir. I didn't hear that
last part.
His whole family needs to leave the community and
not come back unless the Lord directs. They need to
repent. They are a bad influence among us.
William Edson Jessop: Yes, sir.
Also Jesse Jessop Jr., did you hear the name?
William Edson Jessop: Yes, sir.
We SIlS eeBfBsse8 is SWliBg is 8S witk issse girls.
He needs to leave the community and repent from a
distance. Okay?
William Edson Jessop: Yes, sir. I just had
Richard Holm call .... [couldn't hear the rest]
He called you? Let's load it up into something, get
it offthat lot, and he can have his week where to put that
trailer, but don't give him a week. He will use a week
against us if you do. What did you say to him?
William Edson Jessop:???
Who were you going to use?
William Edson Jessop: His son Rick Holm ...
Just start today and get it going. That man is a snake
in the grass and I have already told you what the Lord
has told me about him. Don't give Richard Holm room
to attack us further.
Tell Clarence Wayman I love him. I have
confidence in him, personally, but his family must
Saturday, May 1, 2004 PageS Record of President Warren Jeffs
not be in Short Creek even another day if we can
help it. Give him a few days if they don't have a
place immediately, but his wife is apostate and
fighting against us and Clarence knows it. Tell
Clarence to stay in contact with me by letter and he
and his faithful sons can come to meetings, talking
of the work meeting and the work project.
[Discussed the handout.]
We love and appreciate you. Stand firm and let's do
it the Lord's way and His pace. Did you talk to Joseph
Barlow, that called you? Okay. You told them just to
fulfill Section 20, verse 377 Yes, you don't need to go
visit them and comfort their grieving. Just give them
my message that the Lord has told me they still have not
repented fully and they need to take on the true Spirit of
repentance and fulfill that verse in Section 20, and
remind them in all their getting together and teaching
each other, they have no authority to teach. They each
one need to get close to the Lord. Okay? The Lord
bless you. Thank you. Goodbye.
End of conversation.
I just talked to the Bishop, gave him instructions to
send away Clarence Wayman and his family and my
conversation is on the record here for my dictation. I
also said to send away Jesse Jessop Jr. Jesse Jessop Jr.
helped destroy Daniel Johnson Jr. who ran off and has
left the Priesthood, also Merlin Bateman, I think he is
David Bateman's son.
I just reiterated to the Bishop to tell Joseph I.
Barlow and those men to fulfill Section 20, verse
37, and they have no authority to even teach each
other. They each one need to get close to the Lord.
They have been sent away by the Lord, right away
from the community, because they do continue to
have people gather with them and hold meetings
and teach, which is out of order. It is a great
deception happening in many people's minds
when they visit those men who have been handled
and have lost their families. They are deceived to
think these men have a humble spirit of repentance
because they firmly declare loyalty to God and the
Prophet, but they haven't repented. They haven't
made it right with the Lord. So people need to be
careful or they will find themselves losing
Priesthood and Priesthood blessings through
sympathy against authority, sympathy against the
Lord's will. Oh, I yearn for this people. I just
yearn even for these men that have been handled,
that they won't tum traitor.
I have called R17 this morning to the family. I have
named certain ones to return back to Short Creek, my
wife Jen, Jenny Steed Jeffs, will take our daughter
Melissa and our son Shem back to Short Creek. My
young daughter Amber and son Jake will return to their
mother Barbara at Short Creek. Patricia is about six
years old. She will return to Short Creek to be with
Gloria, her mother. I have also sent back Jessica,
Esther and Ada -- so four ladies and five children. I ,
have called Short Creek and had two of the ladies move
back to the Jeffs block, the south house, so there will be
some young children on the property. We have warn
our welcome at most houses we have sent these
families to, these mothers and children to. Many of
those families have their own tests taking place. I still
have Sharon and little Samuel at LeRoy Jeffs house and
I still have Lori and little Elizabeth and also my wives
Ida Lorraine and Jennetta at Isaac Jeffs house.
Otherwise most of the people at Short Creek are at the
Jeffs Property.
The gathering to the places of refuge has
stopped except for a few more workers. The Lord
is cleaning up the places of refuge to accomplish
His mission of the fulness of the redemption of
Zion, and I just yearn after this people, yet I rej oice
that the Lord reads the hearts of His people and
judges them. I must not compromise the
redemption of Zion for anyone.
In talking to the Bishop just now he said he had
the people leave their copies ofthis handout of my
three sermons on the chairs so the handout would
be there the next Saturday for them to listen to the
next meeting. Again these meetings they are
listening to, these sermons, the Lord is describing
the qualifications to be part of Zion.
I talked to my daughter Lenora. I had that
revelation concerning her weakness of leaning
toward boys and even a brother in a wrong way --
evil thoughts and desires. The Lord showed me it
would be a large problem if it wasn't corrected.
She broke into tears when I talked to her this
morning, describing how she had been repenting
and was correcting her life. I told her to remain
there for now and be that good girl she can be. I
talked to Levi and he is doing well. There may be
others I send back. I am going the Lord's pace on
Record of President Warren Jeffs Page 9 Saturday, May 1, 2004
all of it. God bless the great mission and work of
the redemption of Zion. And may I have a place
with the Lord in Zion is my yearning prayer and
preparation and fervency exerted to do His will,
thus the Lord redeems Zion for He is Zion. God
among the people is Zion. End dictation.
4:19 p.m. Paging the Family
in Short Creek, Arizona
Hello, everyone. I hope you are all smiling. I
hope you can hear me. I am sending some people
back to the property there today. They will arrive
by morning. Prepare Jen's room and the children
where she was. Make sure you have Ada's room
and Jessica's rooms ready, and Esther's. I would
like Jacob to stay with Ammon, and Patricia will
be coming to be with Gloria. Amber will be there
with Barbara, as well as Jacob, so we will have a
few children there under their mother's direction.
Make sure they work hard, even teach these little
children to keep confidences. No one needs to ask
them all they know, what they have been doing.
Teach them to keep what father has had them do
quiet to be close to father. That is how you teach
children to respect and love their father. And all of
you prepare quickly. I hope you can hear this page.
Smile and pray. Continue on and I love you all.
We are in the midst of the redemption of Zion,
the training of a people by experience. Zion is the
fiIst two gteat COIlllllalldIllellts petfucted ill yOu.
The love of the Father is exerted by a constant
prayer of gratitude, a constant prayer of rejoicing.
When you think of any blessing, think of the Giver
of the blessing, your loving Heavenly Father. I
love you all. Smile and pray. Goodbye.
6:59 p.m. Calling the Family at R17
[Recording Cuts In] .. .1 counted all of you up
and it was twenty-five ladies, with the older
mothers, and how many children? Twenty three
still there. So there are lots of you there still, nearly
fifty of you.
Well hello, everyone. We all need to be more
sensitive. You know the families living in the
duplex have as much to deep clean as you do. Take
all their numbers and take all our numbers and we
see we have a lot more people that could help. The
call was deep clean everyone's house. I would like
to see all you ladies helping them finish that
mission instead of listening to a tape. Do your
prayer now and let it be your last group prayer for
the day. And stay at the job of helping Ernest's and
Raymond's family finish their deep cleaning until
it is done. And let's be more sensitive when a call
of the Lord is made, not feel like you are afraid to
help. Will you do it? Have you heard me?
[Phone connection/ailed and reconnected.]
Can you hear me? Did you already have
prayer? Are you there? I want everybody to go
over and help Ray Jessop's family finish their deep
cleaning tonight instead of listening to a disc. Did
you hear me? Okay. Help Ernest's family, too.
Let's be sensitive when others are needing help.
Go do it, everyone. Thank you.
7:17 p.m. Night Class with the Family at Rl
The Prayer of Faith
Good evening. Did you have prayer at seven?
You did not? Okay. Kate, say our prayer for our
class right now. Just stand up and do it.
Prayer: Mother Kate
This is an unusual occasion that I can meet with
you at night time. I seek Heavenly Father's Spirit
to be the Teacher. Through that Spirit of prayer
you listen. I learned to look upon my father as the
representative of God. I couldn't think of
Heavenly Father unless I t h o u ~ h t of father. I
couldn't think of father without thinking of
Heavenly Father because of the Keyholder
position he held. I learned to always pray to
Heavenly Father to guide me through my father,
especially in father's presence. I learned that the
silent prayer to be led was often answered through
father, where he had the impressions of what to say
and do.
We are on such a great and special mission here.
As the Prophet Joseph declared, "We are seeking
humility and great faith." I will use his words as he
described that he was promised to bring a people
into the presence of God.
TPJSPage 19
He has promised us great things; yea,
even a visitfrom the heavens to honor us with
His own presence. We greatly fear before the
Lord lest we should fail of this great honor,
which our Master proposes to confer on us;
Saturday, May 1, 2004 Page 10 Record of President Warren Jeffs
we are seeking for humility and great faith
lest we be ashamed in His presence.
In working with people in their preparation, one
of the most often asked questions and one of their
greatest concerns is, "How do we pray more
effectively?" which means that it works. So I feel
to give you a few thoughts from the Prophets and
the Lord on how prayers can be the prayer of faith.
Many people just say words. They say prayers. I
have seen and heard gentile prayers and the
prayers of other religions. Many people pray in
front of others to be heard of men and women.
Some religions they repeat the same words over
and over and over. Some religions they just sit
there silent and never say a word to anybody. But
we know one sure example is the spring of 1820,
Joseph Smith, a young man of fourteen years old,
went and voiced an out-loud prayer, and it made
the devil mad, so much so the devil tried to stop
him from talking. But he kept trying to talk and he
kept thinking that prayer, and the Lord allowed the
evil powers to test him to see ifhe really wanted an
answer. There is a key to prayer. You must pray
with real intent. You really want the answer.
When the Lord saw he really wanted the answer,
then the Father and the Son appeared to Joseph
Smith. And where the Spirit of God is, the evil
powers have to flee.
That was a special occasion, the only event in
the history of this earth where the Godhead met,
that we know of. Joseph Smith was foreordained
to be the Witness and Testator to witness and
testify to the whole world that he knew the
Godhead lived. His record awakens our minds to
the reality that God lives and He hears and answers
prayers. So if ever you wonder if our Heavenly
Father hears and answers prayers, remember that
First Vision in the spring of 1820 when Joseph
Smith knelt down and prayed.
So we want to offer prayers called the "prayer
of faith". So we need to study what faith means, or
what is faith in your prayers. The prayer of faith is
heard and answered. The prayer of faith often is
not just one prayer. As Uncle Roy taught us, say
your prayers in the morning, then get up off your
knees and go about your work, then repeat the
prayers as a yearning. The same prayer you
offered in the morning, you keep repeating it with
that same yearning. Staying at your prayers is a
key to having your prayers answered. Say one
prayer and forget it, that means you weren't
exerting a faith, really believing it would happen.
The prayer of faith is a prayer answered by
Heavenly Father. So all things have to be just right
for your prayers to be answered. You learn about
Heavenly Father and His character and you learn
He does only right. He never does a wrong. We
learn that He is our actual Father of our spirits and
of our bodies, a God coming to earth, our Father
Michael, coming to earth as Adam to start the
population of this earth. And the God over Him
became His Son in the flesh. Jesus Christ is
Jehovah Christ. So first you need to know who
you are talking to.
Uncle Roy taught us the God that we pray to is
our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. He is named the
Father and the Son. He is the God over Michael
before this earth was created, and He was able to
come here and become the Son of God to conquer
death and give us life. The God that Father Michael
prayed to when He was Adam is Jehovah, or Jesus
Christ. Jesus Christ is the God that appeared to the
brother of Jared, that appeared to Moses, and so on.
And His work is to bring us back into the presence
of our Heavenly Father, Father Michael.
So there is a special relationship between the
Father and the Son in the Godhead as to this earth.
ASB we are Bel"e B8 is 89t1"B: 9t is
Michael's eternal Celestial family on this earth
when it is Celestialized. That is where Priesthood
comes into all-importance in your life, and your
marriage covenants properly lived earns you that
place. Even your baptism, through Priesthood
power and authority, was an eternal gift unto
eternal life.
In Priesthood all things are done by prayer, in
the name of Jesus Christ. The Holy Spirit is the
power ofthe Gods that makes all things work. It is
the power that brings all blessings. So I voice
strongly that faith in your prayers means the Spirit
of God is in your prayers. And when the Holy
Spirit is with you, you automatically receive
revelation, or heavenly thoughts. Revelation gives
you Heavenly Father's thoughts and feelings to
where your prayers are in oneness with His will.
So there is another key of the prayer of faith. It is
proper to say, "Heavenly Father, we seek the Spirit
Record of President Warren Jeffs Page 11 Saturday, May 1, 2004
of prayer and to do your will only. May my or our
desires be in oneness with you." So the prayer of
faith is led, guided, where you feel the burning
peace as you pray, knowing what you are praying
for is Heavenly Father's will.
So once again, the prayers that are heard are
prayers offered through the Spirit of God burning
in you, being led by His whisperings. And as you
know you have the burning peace, and the thoughts
and desires you have are His will, Heavenly
Father's will, that gives you a confidence equal to
knowledge. So the prayer of faith is a prayer equal
to knowledge, as though it was already done -
what you are asking for will happen, always in the
Lord's time and way.
In talking about the Prophets, Brigham Young
described Joseph Smith this way: "Joseph Smith
had to pray all the time to perform his work."
Many people think, "Oh, the Prophet is the
Prophet. He just has power with God and what he
says happens," as though it the Prophet doing it.
But the Prophet is a servant of God sent to earth to
exert a constant living faith to bless the people of
God, the Lord doing it. The Prophet has to pray
constantly, even to know what to do next. So the
Lord establishes a Prophet among the people,
sends a Prophet among the people to show that
everyone has to pray in order to do Heavenly
Father's will.
In the prayer of faith that is heard and answered
- that is what a prayer of faith means; the prayer of
faith is a prayer that is heard and answered - that
prayer of faith has the assurance that you please
God, that what you are praying for is His will. But
just asking isn't enough. Just knowing His will
isn't enough.
So let us suppose you have a very real need and
it is Heavenly Father's will to give you the
blessing; but perhaps you haven't been real
obedient today, a little light-minded. You haven't
lived as He taught. A prayer of faith has to have
obedience backing it up. So as you approach your
Heavenly Father you have to be able to say, in all
humility, "With your help I have been obedient,
and I desire this blessing so I may be more
obedient." Your prayers have to be backed up.
You don't just throw some words out there and
hope the blessing lands on you. There is an
on-purpose preparation.
So know that when you need a blessing, you
need to make sure there is something backing it up,
backing up your prayer of faith. You have to be
able to say, "I am doing your will, Heavenly
Father, through the Priesthood over me." The
Prophet Joseph described it this way: "Through the
sacrifice of all earthly things is our faith strong."
And the sacrifice of all earthly things means
submit your will to the will of those over you, and
thus to Heavenly Father. Sweet, humble
obedience to God through Priesthood is the
sacrifice we always make.
You have been taught many, many truths lately,
and every training requires an obedience. So in
your prayers, to be a prayer of faith, you have to
think about what you have been taught, to see if
you have been obedient.
So I will give you an example of a prayer of
faith, and the Lord honoring my father's prayers
and Priesthood. You see my sister, Rachel, here on
this property. We were at Maxwell Park in Short
Creek, and we got word that she was bleeding to
death. And you know life or death matters means
you need the blessing this minute. In having a
child she was bleeding to death. The doctors came
out, told her former husband they didn't know if
!bey tbe bleediR:S me wefe
and the message came that they needed father's
prayers. Father had everybody be quiet, and he
said to me, "Pray." And I was mouth and he
prayed. We told the Lord we knew that He could
save her life and stop the bleeding. And the Lord
heard our Prophet's prayers, and very shortly
thereafter we got another call. The doctors came
out of the operating room and the bleeding had
stopped. And it was the Lord's will to preserve her
life. And we all offered up thank-you prayers,
rejoicing in the Lord for His mercy and kindness.
There is many examples people could give of
their prayers being answered, but most people
won't talk about it because it is so sacred and
special, they only talk about if they are told to give
testimony. Most of our prayers are given in secret,
our prayers of faith. When you join in group
prayer and hold hands in a show to Heavenly
Father that you want to be one, your group prayers
Saturday, May 1, 2004 Page 12 Record of President Warren Jeffs
are only effective if you bring your already
working silent prayers to the group prayer.
Praying always is in your heart, where you have a
want always there. You were born as a living
person with a living want. And the commandment
of God to pray always unto Him is how we
discipline that want to always want His will, and
thereby do His will. Your praying always is the
want to do Heavenly Father's will. Your mind has
to be busy on things, but your mind is guided by
your wants, and if you live in selfishness, you
easily forget prayer, because you want just what
you want, to serve yourself. But when you
discipline your desire to want the will of God and
do it, that is the eye single of praying always. And
it is a happy way of life, this praying always;
because the prayer of faith always exerted in your
heart, where your living desire is, that prayer of
faith brings an increase of Heavenly Father's
approval, called the burning peace of His Spirit.
Now all of you are innocent and pure enough
that you can feel Heavenly Father's Spirit, and you
feel good when you really mean a prayer, when
you really mean it. You can feel Heavenly
Father's approval. You can also feel His
disapproval, an emptiness when you say a prayer
that you really didn't mean. You just said words
and forgot it.
So you are learning the Spirit of God by
learning how to pray right. Through prayer will
you know Heavenly Father. One of the great
examples is the Twelve Apostles among the
Nephites. When Jesus came and appeared to them,
He said, "Pray," and they prayed to Him, and their
hearts were filled with desire, which means their
prayers were led. Heavenly Father's Spirit put in
their minds what to pray for, and it was Heavenly
Father's will; so that as they prayed more and
more, not just for themselves, but for the will of
God toward all people to be done, the Holy Spirit
flowed into them brighter and brighter until it
turned their clothes white, and their faces were
white, a heavenly whiteness. The Holy Spirit just
increased and increased as they prayed the prayer
of faith. That is an example of what prayers should
do.
Now if you kneel down and pray and you just
feel empty, and you don't know what words to say,
and you don't seem to be answered, that means
maybe you didn't do something you should have,
or maybe there is something you did wrong you
need to repent of. Maybe you don't have the
obedience backing up your prayers, and you need
to ask forgiveness for any weakness, yearn to
know what you need to do better, and sometimes
the Spirit of God will show you what you forgot to
do - something you were told to do and you didn't
do it. Go make it right. Go do that obedient thing
so that you can kneel down and know obedience
backs up your prayers. Other times the Lord is
testing you to see if you really mean it, that you
will stay at it, pray until the blessing comes.
I am praying and yearning fervently, with all
my heart, there will be a clean and prepared people
raised up from among this Priesthood people to
come into the presence of God and redeem Zion. I
can't say that prayer just once. It is my constant
yearning. And step by step, meeting this person
and that person, going to this place and that place,
week after week, month after month, that prayer
and yearning to raise up a people to redeem Zion is
always there. The blessing doesn't come all at
once. It is a step here, a step there; a person here, a
person there is converted; a blessing comes here,
another blessing comes there. That is an example
for you, because you have been given the mission
to become like God and come into His presence.
So that yearning prayer doesn't stop. And all other
prayers are part of triat one yearnmg prayer to
become like God and please Him and dwell with
Him.
So, young ladies and all here, you got to draw in
the wanderings of your mind, is how Uncle Roy
said it. A young mind is about as energetic as a
young body, and the young mind can go here and
there about as fast as you can run. You can think of
one thing, then another . You need to draw in the
wanderings and focus on the one right desire, the
one right prayer: "Heavenly Father, I want your
will, to become like you and dwell with you
again." Yearning to please your Heavenly Father
is the eye single, the one right prayer, and all other
prayers are part of fulfilling that one prayer. So
just like I have been praying for years, and will
pray for years for the fulness of Zion to be
established on this land, this land we call the land
of America, the promised land; so you must
Record of President Warren Jeffs Page 13 Saturday, May 1, 2004
continue your one constant prayer for years to
yearn to become like God, to please Him.
Prayer is our way oflife in the Priesthood, and it
is always a reaching to Heavenly Father to please
Him. You must learn to be led as you pray. Every
gift of the Spirit of God is earned and exerted
through prayer. Here are the Lord's words:
D.&C. 46
28. And it shall come to pass that he that
asketh in the Spirit shall receive in the
Spirit;***
30. He that asketh in the Spirit asketh
according to the will of God; wherefore it is
done even as he asketh.
31. And again, I say unto you, all things
must be done in the name of Christ,
whatsoever you do in the Spirit;
And then this key to prayer:
32. And ye must give thanks unto God in
the Spirit for whatsoever blessing ye are
blessed with.
When the Savior appeared to the Nephites, one
of the first things He taught them was how to pray.
He even gave an example of prayer that shows how
all our prayers should be patterned. He said:
3 Nephi 13
6. But thou, when thou prayest, enter into
thy closet,
01 a private plaCe.
6 .... and when thou hast shut thy door,
pray to thy Father who is in secret; and thy
Father, who seeth in secret, shall reward thee
openly.
6 ... .pray to thy Father who is in secret;
and thy Father, who seeth in secret, shall
reward thee openly.
7. But when ye pray, use not vain
repetitions,
Don't have empty prayers, just memorized
prayers.
7. .. . as the heathen, for they think that they
shall be heard for their much speaking.
8. Be not ye therefore like unto them, for
your Father knoweth what things ye have
need of before ye ask him.
Now, there is a truth that helps you understand
how to pray. Before you even start praying, He
knows what you need, and that is why you want
your prayer to be led to please Him.
There is an article here I have given a class. I
think you have heard the training, called "The
Holy Spirit". Here is where you learn and come to
know your Heavenly Father:
TPJS Page 247
We would say to the brethren, seek to
know God in your closets,
Or in your private place. The most private place
you have is within you. You come to know
Heavenly Father within your own mind and your
own heart. When you go to a private place where
you know only He can hear you, that humility of
prayer is to trust in Him that He sees all things. He
already knows what you need and He can hear you
wherever you are.
... call upon him in the fields. Follow the
directions of the Book of Mormon, and pray
over, and for your families, your cattle, your
flocks, your herds, your corn, and all things
that you possess; ask the blessing of God
upon all your labors, and everything that you
engage in. Be virtuous and pure; be men of
integrity and truth; keep the commandments
of God; and then you will be able more
perfectly to understand the difference
between right and wrong - between the
things of God and the things of men; and your
lnath wjll be Uke that qftbejust Ylhjcb sbjnetb
brighter and brighter unto the perfect day.
Now listen to the Lord's prayer. It begins with,
"Father, thy will be done." It ends with, "Father,
thy will be done, and all glory to you," just wanting
His will. So the Spirit of prayer is revelation,
obedience, and gratitude. Through prayer you
exert the Spirit of revelation, obedience, and
gratitude, reaching to be led. Listen to our Savior's
prayer.
3 Nephi 13
9. . .. Our Father who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy name.
That means, "You are great and above all, and
we love you above all." "Hallowed" means, "You
are great and holy and we love you."
10. Thy will be done on earth as it is in
heaven.
Before any asking, you put yourself in tune.
You make sure you have humbled yourself to say,
Saturday, May 1, 2004 Page 14 Record of President Warren Jeffs
"Thy will be done. Even what 1 ask 1 want to be
your will."
11. Andforgive us our debts,
That means our sins.
11 .... as we forgive our debtors.
"Forgive us for our sins and weaknesses. 1
forgive everyone and yearn all others to be blessed
by thee."
12. And lead us not into temptation, but
deliver us from evil.
And in His prayer He gave among the Jews, He
said, "And give us this day our daily bread." That
means, "We seek your blessings today to do your
will."
12. And lead us not into temptation, but
deliver us from evil.
That means, "Bless us with the Spirit of God.
Deliver us from the evil powers." Then it ends:
13. For thine is the kingdom, and the
power, and the glory, forever. * * *
"I just want your will and you to be glorified."
Now here is another key to prayer. If you have any
bad feelings present, your prayers don't work.
Prayer only is the prayer of faith if you have good
feelings.
14. For, ifyeforgive men their trespasses
your heavenly Father will also forgive you;
15. But if ye forgive not men their
trespasses neither will your Father forgive
your trespasses.
Then He said that if you remember your brother
has aught against you, then go make it right, and
then the Lord will hear our prayers. What about
this feeling to not pray? Where does it come from?
The Prophet Nephi explained it from the Lord:
2 Nephi 32
8. . .. For if ye would hearken unto the
Spirit which teacheth a man to pray ye would
know that ye must pray; for the evil spirit
teacheth not a man to pray, but teacheth him
that he must not pray.
When you have a feeling that you don't want to
pray, you are listening to an evil spirit, which is
usually a discouragement whispering, "Oh, 1 don't
deserve the blessing," or, "Will 1 really be heard?"
whatever thought that is wrong, it doesn't feel
right. Now dear ladies, all who will hear this, 1 say
to you, the prayer of faith is accompanied by the
Spirit of prayer, a feeling that is real. Ask for the
Spirit of prayer, Heavenly Father's Spirit. And
how does prayer work? You are a living person.
We are all sons or daughters of Heavenly Father.
He is in the heavens on His Celestial earth. His
light goes everywhere, called the Holy Spirit. He
sees everything at once, hears it all at once. He has
also assigned guardian angels to be near us. Our
minds are His creation, and He has made it so our
mind, when we think, He can hear what we are
thinking. Our Savior showed this, that while He
was even in this mortal life, He had all power and
He could hear the thoughts of the people around
Him. When people tried to hide it from Him, He
knew their thoughts.
So your brain, your mind, thinks. When the
Spirit of God goes into you, nothing is hidden and
Heavenly Father can hear you. When you ask for
the Spirit of prayer and you feel the peace in your
heart and your mind, then there is a signal. It is like
the wire is connected and the electricity flows
through it. When you have the Spirit of God, the
Spirit of prayer, the signal goes from your brain,
your mind, up to Heavenly Father that fast
[snappedjinger}, instantly. And then He answers
you back with the sweet whisperings, protection,
guidance, blessings.
So prayer works only through the Spirit of God.
The signal goes up, He returns His answer with the
burning peace, and then He causes His Spirit to
give the blessings. We pray the Lord will bless our
food. We should have a Spirit of peace as we pray,
and His Spirit affects the food. When you pray,
you should feel that Heavenly Father is listening,
through the burning peace. Heavenly Father's
Spirit will tell you, "Yes, He has heard your
prayer." But that doesn't mean the blessing will
come right this minute. You said in your prayer,
"Father, thy will be done," which includes His
time and way, when He wants to give the blessing.
So when you receive a witness that your prayers
are heard and will be answered, don't get all
discouraged if the blessing doesn't come when you
think it should. The witness that He heard your
prayers and the blessing will be given should cause
you to keep yearning for the blessing to come until
it comes, having the assurance that through your
obedience He will give you the blessing.
Record of President Warren Jeffs Page 15 Saturday, May 1,2004
Many of the men I have trained recently haven't
seen me for months. The Lord names their names
to me, that they should receive the training and be
part of the new Zion's Camp. And many of these
men, after I get done training them, they shake my
hand, give me a hug, and then often they say, "I
told the Lord last week or yesterday or recently, I
just wanted to be close to Uncle Warren and do the
Lord's will through him. My prayers were
answered." When they dedicated their all to do the
Lord's will, the blessing came, and they thrilled to
receive the training and be part of this mission.
Now in the Book of Mormon, this training from
the Prophet Alma to one of his sons applies to us.
This is how to pray over everything, like the
Prophet Joseph Smith declared. This Prophet used
the word "cry", "Cry unto God," to mean prayer.
Alma 37
36. Yea, and cry unto God for all thy
support; yea, let all thy doings be unto the
Lord,
That means through prayer.
36 .... and whithersoever thou goest
When you travel,
36 .... let it be in the Lord;
So I wonder even when you got in the car to
drive over to class, did you ask for the Lord's
protection, or did you just think you deserve the
blessing, you didn't have to ask or remember Him?
Wherever you go, it should be with a prayer.
36 .... yea, let all thy thoughts be directed
unto the Lord;
So the Lord said look unto him in every
thought, want to please Him in all things.
36 .... yea, let the affictions of thy heart be
placed upon the Lord forever.
Love Him above all.
37. Counsel with the Lord in all thy
doings,
That means talk to Him and listen. A lot of
people can talk a lot, but who can listen? You have
to be more quiet to listen.
37. ... and he will direct theefor good; yea,
when thou liest down at night lie down unto
the Lord, *** [May want the phrase missing
here}
That means say your prayers and have the
burning peace before you go to bed. Some people
are troubled with bad dreams, unrestful feelings in
the night. I tell you, ladies, before you go to bed,
make sure you have prayed fervently and done
every duty so you feel the burning peace. And use
the word "dedicate". "I dedicate myself and this
room unto thee, and ask for your Spirit and the
guardian angels to be here." Make sure you feel
the peace before you retire to bed.
37 .... and when thou risest in the morning
let thy heart be full of thanks unto God;
So your first thought should be a, "Thank you,
Heavenly Father," when you wake up. And if you
wake up in the middle of the night, that should be
your first thought: "I love you. Thank you. I
rejoice in you, Heavenly Father."
37 .... and ifye do these things, ye shall be
lifted up at the last day.
A person who doesn't pray will die spiritually.
Father called them dead people walking around,
darkened because they wouldn't reach for the light
through prayer. Prayer is our very way oflife. So
we have taught you prayer is to the spirit as the
breath of life is to the body. A moment without
breathing, you can feel it. Your body gets
desperate. Go very long without breathing and you
die. You know that. It is the same for our spirit.
you ~ Q yery Jo02 wjthout praying )lour spirit
begins to die. It becomes darkened and empty.
Your testimony becomes a doubt and a question.
You don't feel good. The evil spirits are there. An
evil spirit whispering selfish or bad feelings wants
you to not pray, because the instant you start
praying, the devil knows he has to go away. If you
learn to pray always with the Spirit of prayer
always in you, then you are in a dedicated
condition, and then you have, through Heavenly
Father's gifts, you bind satan and his whisperings
of temptation never touch you, because you are
living in God and unto Him through prayer and
revelation.
Suppose the Lord said to me, "Gather your
family and at 8:00 tonight," whatever day it was, "I
will come and visit you if you are ready." Let us
suppose it got right there to eight and one person's
mind was on the food you ate, another person's
mind was on this thing or that thing, and
everybody's mind was scatter-brained, and we
Saturday, May 1, 2004 Page 16 Record of President Warren Jeffs
came and just thought, "Well, the Lord will come."
If your mind is distracted from the oneness He
would be offended and He wouldn't come. When
a blessing is offered, when a promise is given for a
group of people, every mind and heart has to be
yearning, everyone, for that one thing. There has
to be a oneness. And so when we come in group
prayer, your mind can't be over here and over there
on other things. In group prayer, one person
speaks and everyone else repeats the exact words
spoken by that person; but inside of every one of us
there is a spiritual yearning, a reaching, a want to.
You yearn, like something goes up and out of you
to Heavenly Father, and all of us in group prayer
repeating the same words, and everyone with that
spiritual yearning, that is a prayer of faith for a
group of people that the Lord will hear. Then we
will have a dedicated home. We will be protected.
We will have the blessings everybody needs.
The Lord has called upon us to repent of our
selfish prayers. Selfish prayers are wanting the
gifts of the Spirit of God just for yourself, and you
stop there. The prayer of oneness is the prayer of
faith. And a prayer of oneness is to reach for the
gifts and return them by praying for our Priesthood
head and thus the work of God to be blessed, and
use our energies and gifts to do the will of those
over us. So your prayers, to be prayers of faith,
must be in oneness with the Priesthood over you.
If you are dIfferent In your deSIres, then you don't
have a prayer of faith.
My prayer of oneness was always, "Heavenly
Father, I want to do your will through my father
whom you have placed over me." In oneness with
the Priesthood over me, my prayers were exerted,
and only then would the Lord hear my prayers to
do my father's will. So my very life is swallowed
up to do the will of my father, swallowed up in his
will, and thus Heavenly Father's. Any prayer
outside of the will of the Priesthood over you is a
selfish prayer. So if the will of those over you is
going a certain direction, and you have a desire
outside of that, different, you don't have a prayer
of faith. Your prayers have to be in oneness with
the prayers of those over you, where those over
you are inspired in doing the will of God.
You need to know God. You will know Him
through His Spirit. You receive His Spirit through
prayer. And prayer is our way ofthinking, feeling,
desiring. Think through prayer. Feel through
prayer, the burning peace of the Holy Spirit. Faith
is the first step of all good. Faith, or prayer, is the
first principle of the Gospel. A principle is a way
oflife. Prayer must become your very way of life.
Then you can become like God.
It is so beautiful to read in the scriptures that
even our Savior, appearing to the Nephites, after
He was resurrected, able to dwell in heaven, when
He came among the Nephites, even He prayed.
Listen to these beautiful prayers.
3 Nephi 19
16. And it came to pass that he
Jesus,
16. ...spake unto the multitude, and
commanded them that they should kneel
down again upon the earth, and also that his
disciples should kneel down upon the earth.
17. And it came to pass that when they
had all knelt down upon the earth, he
commanded his disciples that they should
pray.
18. And behold, they began to pray; and
they did pray unto Jesus, calling him their
Lord and their God.
19. And it came to pass that Jesus
departed out of the midst of them, and went a
little way offfrom them and bowed himself to
the earth, and he said:
Look how natural His prayers are:
20. Father, I thank thee that thou hast
given the Holy Ghost unto these whom I have
chosen; and it is because of their beliefin me
that I have chosen them out of the world.
21. Father, Ipray thee that thou wilt give
the Holy Ghost unto all them that shall
believe in their words.
22. Father, thou hast given them the Holy
Ghost because they believe in me; and thou
seest that they believe in me because thou
hearest them, and they pray unto me; and
they pray unto me because I am with them.
23. And now Father, I pray unto thee for
them, and also for all those who shall believe
on their words, that they may believe in me,
that I may be in them as thou, Father, art in
me, that we may be one.
That whole prayer was a prayer for other
people, and in that prayer He was praying for us as
Record of President Warren Jeffs Page 17 Saturday, May 1,2004
the believers in this Book of Mormon. So here was
our Savior, an exalted God, and yet all His
communication with His Father was prayer. He
went back to look at the disciples and the answer
was there. His Father answered Him. He didn't
stop there and just say , "Yes, we got the blessing."
He went back and prayed again a thank-you
prayer.
24. And it came to pass that when Jesus
had thus prayed unto the Father, he came
unto his disciples, and behold, they did still
continue, without ceasing, to pray unto him;
He was praying for them. They were praying
unto Him and for Him. The channel of prayer was
open. That meant there could be a free flow of the
Holy Spirit to them.
24 .... and they did not multiply many
words, for it was given unto them what they
should pray, and they were filled with des ire.
With revelation of what to pray for.
25. And it came to pass that Jesus blessed
them as they did pray unto him; and his
countenance did smile upon them, and the
light afhis countenance did shine upon them,
and behold they were as white as the
countenance and also the garments of Jesus;
and behold the whiteness thereof did exceed
all the whiteness, yea, even there could be
nothing upon earth so white as the whiteness
tlrefetJoj
26. And Jesus said unto them: Pray on;
nevertheless they did not cease to pray.
27. And he turnedfrom them again, and
went a little way off and bowed himself to the
earth; and he prayed again unto the Father,
saying:
28. Father, I thank thee that thou hast
purified those whom I have chosen, because
oftheirfaith, and Iprayfor them, andalsofor
them who shall believe on their words, that
they may be purified in me, through faith on
their words, even as they are purified in me.
29. Father, I pray not for the world, but
for those whom thou hast given me out of the
world, because of their faith, that they may be
purified in me, that I may be in them as thou,
Father, art in me, that we may be one, that I
may be glorified in them.
30. And when Jesus had spoken these
words he came again unto his disciples; and
behold they did pray steadfastly, without
ceasing, unto him; and he did smile upon
them again;
That meant they were living in His approval.
30 .... and behold they were white, even as
Jesus.
31. And it came to pass that he went again
a little way off and prayed unto the Father;
32. And tongue cannot speak the words
which he prayed, neither can be written by
man the words which he prayed.
After they did all this, He told them to stand and
stop praying out loud, but He told them they
should not cease to pray in their hearts. A prayer is
a sacred covenant with Heavenly Father, a sacred
promise. Whenever you pray, asking for His
blessings, you are also promising you will obey
Him and use His blessings to do His will. Prayer is
so special. Prayer is the exertion of the mind
through words with a spiritual energy exerted,
reaching up to Heavenly Father; and you listen and
you obey through prayer.
I would like to see all of us - the Lord would
like to see all of us - pray before we speak. To
please Him in your praying always, you should ask
Him what to do next, as you complete ajob or do a
thing. And it would be wise for all of you to ask
Him where you need to do better and also to think
tbe tbat U7Q'lld ile Him iR. QR.eR.eilil
with the Priesthood over you.
Some of you have witnessed to me that
something has awakened you in the night with the
thought, "Pray for Warren." Even the angels want
you to exert faith for the Priesthood over you to be
strengthened, because it is for your benefit for you
to be blessed. So prayer has to be in oneness with
the Priesthood over you, centered in Heavenly
Father to do His will through the Priesthood over
you.
Whenever you sit down with a good Priesthood
book, first ask the Lord that He will help you
understand. Tell Him, "I do believe what 1 am
about to read from your words through the
Prophets. Bless me with your Spirit. Show me
where to do better or to learn something new."
Read the scriptures with a prayer. Through prayer
you open your mind and heart to listen and receive
the sweet whisperings.
Saturday, May 1, 2004 Page 18 Record of President Warren Jeffs
I was impressed with the story of one of the
wives of Joseph Smith the Prophet, how as a young
girl she would go out in the wilderness and pray
many times in the day, and she would invite other
girls to come pray with her. She was out in the
world, but she loved to pray and feel the Spirit of
prayer. When the elders came to her father's
family and taught the Gospel, she believed. She
felt the Spirit of God witness to her the truth of the
Prophet Joseph Smith. And this girl that prayed
always was recognized by the Lord and the
Prophet as a girl who would receive His message.
In Joseph Smith's time, plural marriage was very
private, and the Prophet Joseph had to be careful
who he talked to about it. But the Prophet was led
to that certain girl, and when she heard His
testimony, she prayed, and through prayer she
already knew how to listen and follow the sweet
whisperings, and she received his message and she
willingly was sealed to the Prophet.
You are only close to me through your prayers
to Heavenly Father. You will only know Him and
me through prayer. You will only accomplish this
mission through constant prayer. And prayer
should become ajoy. It is not a burden or a pain or
a hardship. As you are walking along, you have a
yearning after Heavenly Father. Prayer should be
your very thoughts and feelings so that you are
always led by the Holy Spirit. The Spirit of God
operates mtough the prayers Of me people who
have the Spirit of God, and the Lord does it.
There are stories in the Book of Mormon where
we are shown there is a greater degree of the Spirit
of God. That greater degree can even be seen as
fire.
Helaman 5
22. And after they
Nephi and his brother Lehi,
22 .... had been cast into prison many days
without food, behold, they
The Lamanites,
22. ... went forth into the prison to take
them that they might slay them.
23. And it came to pass that Nephi and
Lehi were encircled about as if by fire, even
insomuch that they durst not lay their hands
upon them for fear lest they should be burned.
The heavenly fire is the Spirit of life.
23 .... Nevertheless, Nephi and Lehi were
not burned; and they were as standing in the
midst offire and were not burned. ***
When the Lamanites prayed, then this
happened:
43. And it came to pass that when they
cast their eyes about, and saw that the cloud
of darkness was dispersed from
overshadowing them, behold, they
The Lamanites,
43 .... saw that they were encircled about,
yea every soul, by a pillar offire.
44. And Nephi and Lehi were in the midst
of them; yea, they were encircled about; yea,
they were as if in the midst of a flaming fire,
yet it did harm them not, neither did it take
hold upon the walls of the prison; and they
were filled with that joy which is unspeakable
and full of glory.
45. And behold, the Holy Spirit of God
did come down from heaven, and did enter
into their hearts, and they were filled as if
w ith fire,
A burning peace and joy within.
45. ...and they could speak forth
marvelous words.
And then they saw the angels come down out of
hell v eft, and th:e l l n : ~ e h ettme ttftd talked t6 tftem:.
Why? Because they were filled with the Spirit of
God. The Holy Ghost is heavenly fire. It can be
felt. Everything I have described here is that
heavenly fire giving the blessing, and the Spirit of
God obeys Heavenly Father's will. It only obeys
Heavenly Father's will and carries out His will. So
for your prayers to be prayers of faith, they must be
within the will of Heavenly Father. Every prayer
must be a prayer of oneness with God and the
Priesthood over you, oneness with the will of God
and the will of the Priesthood over you. If your
prayers don't seem to be answered, just maybe
your will isn't perfectly in tune with the will of
those over you.
Now what are you going to do about this? I
hope when you go to your rooms tonight you will
ask for faith in your prayers, which is the Spirit of
God to be in your prayers, and tell Heavenly Father
you want to know Him. You want to know His
Record of President Warren Jeffs Page 19 Saturday, May 1, 2004
Spirit and learn it, and you want to be close to Him
and the Priesthood over you. Don't just go to your
room and have a habit of memorized prayer and go
to bed. Go to your room, kneel down, or wherever
you say your private prayer, and want to know
Heavenly Father and His Spirit. You have been
sent here to do this work. It is because we don't
want it strong enough that we are not getting the
blessing yet. We are so satisfied with the blessings
we have, we are not wanting the blessing we have
been sent here to get, strong enough, which is to
know God, to know His Spirit, to be filled with that
all-consuming heavenly fire in His time, that you
will know Him when He appears. You must know
that fire from heaven, that feeling within. For you
to have eternal life you must know God yourself
through prayer and through His Spirit.
Okay, ladies. I hope you will take this as a
review training, and if anything new has been said,
thank the Lord for it and come alive. I assure you
that heaven is a place of praying always. And to be
there and to stay there, you can't have even one
minute without prayer. The best feeling you can
ever have is the heavenly fire burning within, the
Holy Spirit of God. It lifts you up. It is heavenly
joy. It is every good thing. And it flows from
heaven through Priesthood to you. That is why
you pray for the Priesthood over you to have a
proper prayer. I think you are doing it. The Lord
showed me that the people on this land of refuge
need to be more fervent. We pray, but we have to
have that spiritual energy exerted and not stop.
Beware of pride also means beware of forgetting
your prayers. A spiritual mind is a prayerful mind,
reaching for the strength of heaven. I love you all.
Let us close this with prayer and have our
kneel-down nightly prayer together.
