Atheist RefeRence Book

Version .03

This book is meant as a reference for those intending to evangelize or debate in the name of reason. It references multiple pro-religious, pro-god argument types, and their common refutations. Its meant to be a guide to help recognize, classify, and refute arguments based on your developed knowledge and practice of these arguments, and to give you an opportunity to develop a base of knowledge that would help these guidelines become more effective. It is a not-for-profit compilation of a variety of texts, paraphrased for brevity and clarity, plus additional writing by myself and other volunteers.

PRologue: A conveRsAtion
Assume that you, a fine follower of reason, are chatting with an acquaintance over an espresso, and, as conversations sometimes do, the dialogue veers into religion. Perhaps you both agree that W. is a nut, and you comment about his claim that God sent him to invade Iraq. Your friend, curious at your tone, inquires as to whether you believe in God. Suddenly, your heart begins to beat rapidly. Youre on the verge of a theological debate, with a friend. You dont want to lie - that would undermine your personal integrity. You also dont want to get into a yelling match or have someone wagging a finger at you, condemning you to Hell on behalf of that persons personal god. (that would be, honestly, a huge waste of your time). However, you think that this person, your friend, might actually be curious about your beliefs. And, in turn, you become curious about your friends beliefs, perhaps in hope that you can bring someone else to the brink of reason. What do you do? Well, thats ultimately up to you. But, heres what I might do... Im somewhat passive aggressive, so, even if someone asks me whether I believe in God, I would likely respond, Do you believe in God? And, I would expect my friend to say yes. Then, Id follow up, Why? That can lead to some exciting conversation and perhaps some friendly debate. I have a general rule, though, about with whom I engage in conversation. First, I prefer one-on-one. Tag-team conversation/debates can get confusing, and easily shift through many different argument types, with your opponents arguments overlapping, often incoherently, inconsistently, and certainly illogically. Its not worth the headache. I also dont try to converse with street corner evangelicals who hold the bible, yelling at passersby. It doesnt matter what you say to that person, youre not getting anywhere. Youll either make a fool of yourself in front of others, or youll make yourself a hero martyr to nearby atheists and a vicious heathen dog to everyone else, regardless of what youre saying. Never try to out-shout anyone. Youll only look as if youre trying to be more obnoxious. Whom will I engage? Friends, acquaintances whom Ive known for long enough to feel out, relatives, and

seemingly rational people in the mood for good chat and debate. Feel free to deviate from these guidelines, especially if you want to find out why my guidelines are as such. When I ask the counter question of Why do you believe in God?, I will get one of a few initial, knee-jerk responses. Its what I consider the softball phase. Just about all believers faith runs deep to some extent, and they will try to use up all the on the face rational arguments before switching to faith-based arguments. I know Ill never be able to take faith from someone, and I wouldnt want to. What I do, my goal, is to challenge their reasoning with regard to their perceived rational arguments, giving them reason to doubt. Just a little doubt is all it takes to crumble faith, and having a bit of gentle, cordial guidance might be all thats needed. The handbook consists of basic arguments for and against religion, sub-categorized by what I call the Harris Conversation Categories, which are the fundamental arguments that all believers eventually revert to when confronted with reason: Religion is true, religion is useful, atheists are bad. Under Is Religion True? The book analyzes arguments that are commonly used to justify the necessity of religion: God exists, miracles happen, prophets existed as was written. Under Is Religion Useful? the book considers arguments regarding whether morality can exist without religion, and whether faith-based hope and prayer justify the existence of religious belief. Under Is Atheism Bad? the book summarizes Sam Harris ten myths and truths of atheism (which I also recite in full later in the book). The book then lists passages in the Bible that evoke the most disgust and rejection not only from atheists, but also from those who claim to be believers. The full verses are listed in the appendix. Many Christians state that the bible is the Word of God, and that its infallible. Show them why, if thats true, they shouldnt be following it anyway. Or, at least show them that they havent been following it. The book analyzes the Ten (or so) Commandments, which believ2

ers argue to be the firm, inerrant law of God, which is curious, because there is very little agreement or consistency regarding exactly which commandments apply, how they should be read, and why believers who justify their political and social decisions based on some of these commandments dont bother applying Gods Word by enforcing the biblical punishments for violations of the commandments. The book refutes the argument that the Bible must be divinely inspired because it spoke of scientific truths that would have been unknown or immeasurable by its writers. The counter, in sum, is that in the Bible, there are many instances of blatant ignorance of facts that no one questions today. So, was it a divinely inspired joke? Did God lack that knowledge? Did Gods interpreters get all of that wrong (as well as the other blatant contradictions in the Bible?). Or, more simply, was it not divinely inspired at all? The book contains a short list of prominent areas in which religion invades our lives, against our will, and against the Constitution. When a Christian asks you why you dont just mind your own business, respond, You first. The book also contains tools for the rational debater, and a compilation of lectures, essays, and hypothetical dialogues which attempt to explain in greater detail some of the methods of argumentation. The appendices contain full texts of many of the shortened versions in the first parts of the book, as well as a list of sources, suggested reading, and useful websites. Hope you enjoy and get good use from this little handbook.

BAsic ARguments foR And AgAinst Religion

= Arguments for = Arguments against (The argument that God Exists, and, thus religion ought to) Cosmological (a priori) (First Cause; Uncaused Cause; Thomas Aquinas) First cause, prime mover = God 1. Every finite and contingent being has a cause. 2. Nothing finite and dependent (contingent) can cause itself. 3. A causal chain cannot be of infinite length. 4. Therefore, there must be a first cause; or, there must be something that is not an effect. Argument from Contingency (Aquinas) . The existence of an effect requiring the concurrent existence and action of an efficient cause implies the existence and action of that cause. 2. The cosmos as a whole exists. 3. The existence of the cosmos as a whole is radically contingent (meaning that it needs an efficient cause of its continuing existence to preserve it in being, and prevent it from being annihilated, or reduced to nothing). 4. If the cosmos needs an efficient cause of its continuing existence, then that cause must be a supernatural being, supernatural in its action, and one the existence of which is uncaused, in other words, the Supreme Being, or God. Kalam Cosmological Argument (via Big Bang Theory) . Whatever begins to exist has a cause. 2. The universe began to exist. 3. Therefore, the universe had a cause. No excuse for First Cause not having its own cause. Infinite regression of causes is possible. (Axiom of Choice)

is Religion tRue?

If First Cause exists, does not identify with theistic god. No evidence of self-awareness or will. Lacks characteristics of theistic god. May be deistic. Universe was always in existence, no proof otherwise. Therefore, no first cause or need for first cause. Infiniteness of time and space.

Teleological (a posteriori) (Argument from Design - Intelligent Design Creationism; Aquinas; Paley (Watchmaker)) Complexity Implies Creator . X is too (complex, orderly, adaptive, apparently purposeful, and/or beautiful) to have occurred randomly or accidentally. 2. Therefore, X must have been created by a (sentient, intelligent, wise, and/or purposeful) being. 3. God is that (sentient, intelligent, wise, and/or purposeful) being. . Therefore, God exists. Complexity Implies Designer . Complexity implies a designer. 2. The universe is highly complex. 3. Therefore, the universe has a Designer. Irreducible complexity Behe: A single system which is composed of several interacting parts that contribute to the basic function, and where the removal of any one of the parts causes the system to effectively cease functioning. An irreducibly complex evolutionary pathway is one that contains one or more unselected steps (that is, one or more necessary-but-unselected mutations). The degree of irreducible complexity is the number of unselected steps in the pathway. Dembski: A system performing a given basic function is irreducibly complex if it includes a set of well-matched, mutually interacting, nonarbitrarily individuated parts such that each part in the set is indispensable to maintaining the systems basic, and therefore original, function. The set of these indispensable parts is known as the irreducible core of the system. General: Refers to biological systems and organs that supposedly could not have come about by any series of small changes. Anything less than the complete form of such a system or organ would not work at all, or would in fact be a detriment to the organism, and would therefore never survive the process of natural
7

selection. Although some complex systems and organs can be explained by evolution, organs and biological features which are irreducibly complex cannot be explained by current models, and an intelligent designer must have created life or guided its evolution. The debate on irreducible complexity concerns two questions: whether irreducible complexity can be found in nature, and what significance it would have if it did exist in nature. Kitzmiller v. Dover Area School District - Teaching intelligent design in public school biology classes violates the Establishment Clause of the First Amendment to the Constitution of the United States (and Article I, Section 3 of the Pennsylvania State Constitution) because intelligent design is not science and cannot uncouple itself from its creationist, and thus religious, antecedents. Complexity Does Not Imply Design Non-sequitur argument. - There are examples of systems that are non-random or ordered simply because it is following natural physical processes, for example diamonds or snowflakes. Argument from ignorance. (argumentum ad ignorantiam) (argument by lack of imagination), is a logical fallacy in which it is claimed that a premise is true only because it has not been proved false or that a premise is false only because it has not been proved true. Different objects can have similar properties for different reasons (stars & light bulbs). If proponent of ID cannot demonstrate that only intelligent design can cause orderly systems, the argument is invalid. Argument from Poor Design . An omnipotent, omniscient, omnibenevolent creator God would create organisms that have optimal design. 2. Organisms have features that are suboptimal. 3. Therefore, God either did not create these organisms or is not omnipotent, omniscient and omnibenevolent.

Does Not Prove Existence of God Voltaire: [F]rom this one argument, I cannot conclude anything more, except that it is probable that an intelligent and superior being has prepared and shaped matter with dexterity; I cannot conclude from this argument alone that this being has made the matter out of nothing or that he is infinite in any sense [i.e. that he is God]. Could just as well prove the existence of multiple gods. (no reason for single). Undesigned Designer No reasons given for why designer must be undesigned. Designer has to be at least as complex (in theory) as the design, which would, if that theory is to be held as valid, require that the designer also be designed, thus creating an infinite series of designed designers, which makes no sense. No Purpose for the Universe (design denotes purpose - watchmaker) Dawkins - Blind (biological) Watchmaker; Universe merely mimics purpose George C. Smith - Consider the idea that nature itself is the product of design. How could this be demonstrated? Nature, as we have seen, provides the basis of comparison by which we distinguish between designed objects and natural objects. We are able to infer the presence of design only to the extent that the characteristics of an object differ from natural characteristics. Therefore, to claim that nature as a whole was designed is to destroy the basis by which we differentiate between artifacts and natural objects. Evidences of design are those characteristics not found in nature, so it is impossible to produce evidence of design within the context of nature itself. Only if we first step beyond nature, and establish the existence of a supernatural designer, can we conclude that nature is the result of conscious planning.

Ontological (a priori) (Inconceivable! - Anselm, Descartes) Anselm/Modern 1. God is, by definition, a being greater than which nothing can be conceived (imagined). 2. Existence in reality is greater than existence in the mind. 3. God must exist in reality; if God did not, then God would not be that than which nothing greater can be conceived (imagined). Anselm . God is the entity greater than which no entity can be conceived. 2. The concept of God exists in human understanding. 3. God does not exist in reality (assumed in order to refute). . The concept of God existing in reality exists in human understanding. . If an entity exists in reality and in human understanding, this entity is greater than it would have been if it existed only in human understanding (a statement of existence as a perfection). . From , 2, 3, , and an entity can be conceived that is greater than God, the entity greater than which no thing can be conceived (logical self-contradiction). 7. Assumption 3 is wrong, therefore, God exists in reality (assuming , 2, , and are accepted as true). Anselm 2 . God is that entity compared to which nothing greater can be conceived. 2. It is greater to be necessary than not. 3. God must be necessary. . God necessarily exists. Descartes (5th Meditation) . Whatever I clearly and distinctly perceive to be contained in the idea of something is true of that thing. 2. I clearly and distinctly perceive that necessary existence is contained in the idea of God. 3. Therefore, God exists.

Descartes (3d Meditation) . I exist. 2. I have an idea of a supremely perfect being, i.e. a being having all perfections. 3. As an imperfect being I would be unable to create such a concept through my own thoughts. . The concept must have come from God. . To be a perfect being God must exist. . God exists. Hume . The only way to prove anything a priori is through an opposite contradiction. For example, I am a married bachelor. 2. The resulting contradiction makes something inconceivable. Obviously it is impossible to have a married bachelor. 3. It is possible to comprehend anything not existing. Thus it is not inconceivable to imagine anything not existing. . Nothing can be proven to exist a priori, including God. Gaunilos Island (Overload Objection) Think of the greatest, or most perfect, conceivable island. As a matter of fact, it is likely that no such island actually exists. However, we arent thinking of the greatest conceivable island, because the greatest conceivable island would exist, as well as having all those other desirable properties. Since we can conceive of this greatest or most perfect conceivable island, then it must exist. Necessary Nonexistence (Gasking) . The creation of the world is the most marvelous achievement imaginable. 2. The merit of an achievement is the product of (a) its intrinsic quality, and (b) the ability of its creator. 3. The greater the disability (or handicap) of the creator, the more impressive the achievement. . The most formidable handicap for a creator would be nonexistence. . Therefore if we suppose that the universe is the product of an
2

existent creator we can conceive a greater being namely, one who created everything while not existing. . Therefore, God does not exist. Existence as a Property Existence is not a predicate. A predicate is a quality, so it would be right to conclude God is great (since greatness is a predicate) but not right to conclude God is. This has come about because of the use of is by Anselm. Anselm uses is in the same way both for the predicate (God is great) as for the existential (God is), i.e. you cant define God into existence. In the simple equation 3x = 9 the answer is x = 3; however, x does not exist. x has the quality (the predicate) of 3 but this does not mean that there is an actual x. Another way to make this objection, first put forward by Descartes critic Pierre Gassendi and later developed by Immanuel Kant, was to argue that existence is not a quality of things at the same level of other qualities, such as the shape or the size of an object. If you think of a certain object conceptually, and if you think of the object existing, the two would essentially be the same as the idea behind the two remains unaltered as no other essential qualities are imposed on said object. The only difference between the two is that when an object exists, it merely shows that it corresponds to something that exists in the material world, without adding any other essential qualities to the object in question. In short, to think of a thing that exists and to think of that thing if it did not exist, is to in effect think of the same idea; existence does not do anything to change the idea in question.

Pascals Wager (Are you a betting person?) Pascals Wager You live as though God exists. If God exists, you go to heaven: your gain is infinite. If God does not exist, you gain nothing & lose nothing. You live as though God does not exist. If God exists, you go to hell: your loss is infinite. If God does not exist, you gain nothing & lose nothing. Atheists Wager You should live your life and try to make the world a better place for your being in it, whether or not you believe in God. If there is no God, you have lost nothing and will be remembered fondly by those you left behind. If there is a benevolent God, he may judge you on your merits coupled with your commitments, and not just on whether or not you believed in him. Wrong God (or inconsistent revelations) You believe in a god. If your god exists, you go to heaven: your gain is infinite. If you believe in the wrong god and the actual god is monotheistic, your loss may be infinite. Hell Avoidance Insurance - Does not constitute a true belief. (its hoping, based on fear) Assumes Infinite Punishment/Reward.

Personal Specific Proof or Disproof of the Existence of God Argument of: What would it take for you to believe in God? Response: Ill believe in God when 1. God is defined by a specific, unwavering set of characteristics, 2. Sufficient evidence of each and every one of those characteristics is presented to me in such a way that I believed those characteristics to exist, or very likely to exist, and 3. None of the evidence can be attributed to anything other than the God as defined. Note: A smart (or smart-ass) believer might respond: Well, what if I define God as the Moon, the Earth, and the Sun. You have sufficient evidence that those objects/characteristics exist, so that means you believe in God. I would reply: Except that under #3, those characteristics can be attributed to other things. Each object is a thing in and of itself, as well as part of a solar system, galaxy, and universe, all of which follow the same set of rules and guidelines. Therefore, your characteristics are not unique to your idea of God, and therefore your argument does not make me believe God exists. Basically: Nothing in the bible (which is merely a written work (you can write down anything, and that, in itself, is not sufficient evidence for the existence of anything other than the words, themselves, and, perhaps, a writer)) could suffice as evidence, so any time you receive bible passages in response to your request for proof, you can just sit there. Therefore, it requires other arguments for the existence of God, which are those usually mentioned (and already covered in this hint book). As long as any ONE characteristic is not sufficiently supported with evidence, then theres no reason to believe in a God with that characteristic. If your opponent then says, well, the other characteristics still hold, so you should still believe in God based on that, you can say, well, then you would have to remove that unproved characteristic from your definition of God, and maybe Id believe, based on characteristics sufficiently proven to me.
7

Argument of: How can you disprove God? Response: God is fully and wholly disproved when 1. God is defined by a specific, unwavering set of characteristics, 2. Sufficient proof is provided that at least one of those characteristics is not true.

Other Arguments Against the Existence of God Inconsistent revelations. Problem of Evil - omniscient, omnipotent, omnibenevolent god cannot exist if there is evil in the world. Poor Design. Nonbelief - a god who wants believers to believe would do a better job. Argument from parsimony - natural theories explain everything, so spiritual/religious explanations are superfluous, and may be dismissed unless proven. Omnipotence Paradox - Can an omnipotent god make a rock so heavy, even he couldnt lift it? If not, then not omnipotent? If so, then not omnipotent. Omniscience Paradox - How can an all-knowing being change its mind? (being omnipotent) Omniscience contradicts free will, in god or creations. If god knows everything now & in future, then there is no free will. Transcendental arguments against the existence of god: Logic: . Logic presupposes that its principles are necessarily true. 2. According to the brand of Christianity assumed by TAG, God created everything, including logic; or at least everything, including logic, is dependent on God. 3. If something is created by or is dependent on God, it is not necessary it is contingent on God. . If principles of logic are contingent on God, they are not logically necessary. . If principles of logic are contingent on God, God could arrange matters so that a proposition and its negation were true at the same time. But this is absurd. How could God arrange matters

so that New Zealand is south of China and that New Zealand is not south of it? 6. Hence logic is not dependent on God, and, insofar as the Christian world view assumes that logic so dependent, it is false. Science: 1. Miracles by definition are violations of laws of nature that can only be explained by Gods intervention. 2. Science assumes that insofar as an event has an explanation at all, it has a scientific explanation one that does not presuppose God. 3. Hence doing, science assumes that the Christian world view is false. Morality: . The type of Christian morality assumed by TAG is some version of the Divine Command Theory, the view that moral obligation is dependent on the will of God. 2. Such a view is incompatible with objective morality. On the one hand, on this view what is moral is a function of the arbitrary will of God; for instance, if God wills that cruelty for its own sake is good, then it is. On the other hand, determining the will of God is impossible since there are different alleged sources of this will (The Bible, the Koran, The Book of Mormon, etc) and different interpretations of what these sources say; moreover; there is no rational way to reconcile these differences. 3. Thus, the existence of an objective morality presupposes the falsehood of the Christian world view assumed by TAG. vs. Cosmological - What caused God? Theological Noncognitivism - god concept is unverifiable by scientific tests. Extra-temporal, active creator logical impossibility. Use this argument to reply to the assertion that God exists outside the box of normal space and/or time. If God is outside normal space/time, then God would have no influence on anything inside normal space/time. If God did have influence, then two things would occur: God would then at least be considered partially extant within
20

normal space/time. Gods influence would leave a trace, and thus be verifiable. Conclusions: Either God has no influence (being truly outside space/time), and therefore should be considered irrelevant, OR, God exists at least somewhat in normal space/time (thus defeating the extra-temporal deity argument), OR, God doesnt exist. The atheist argument for the non-existence of a perfect sentient being states that if existence precedes essence, it follows from the meaning of the term sentient that a sentient being cannot be complete or perfect. It is touched upon by Jean-Paul Sartre in Being and Nothingness. Sartres phrasing is that God would be a pour-soi [a being-for-itself; a consciousness] who is also an ensoi [a being-in-itself; a thing]: which is a contradiction in terms. The argument is echoed thus in Salman Rushdies novel Grimus: That which is complete is also dead. The no reason argument tries to show that an omnipotent or perfect being would not have any reason to act in any way, specifically creating the universe, because it would have no desires since the very concept of desire is subjectively human. As the universe exists, there is a contradiction, and therefore, an omnipotent god cannot exist. This argument is espoused by Scott Adams in the book Gods Debris. The Argument from a Proper Basis argues that the existence of god should be accepted despite being unprovable, because statements such as I see a chair or I feel pain can also not be proven through scientific method, when in fact they can. Seeing a chair can be verified by asking the subject to point in the direction of the chair, whilst pain can be detected through sudden elevated levels of serotonin and adrenaline in the brains frontal cortices responsible for the sensation of touch and pain. Taking statements like god exists at face value is more comparable to accepting similarly unprovable statements without question, such as pigs can fly.
2

The Need for an Answer argument states that if God needs no beginning and needs no end, why does the cosmos need a beginning and end so badly that humans need create concepts such as a divine creator and the apocalypse without proof. Occams Razor: Do not multiply entities unnecessarily. If you can explain something without supposing the existence of some entity, then do so. Take the simplest solution. There is an incredibly intricate and complex universe out there, which came into being as a result of natural processes. There is an incredibly intricate and complex universe out there, and there is also a God who created the universe. Clearly this God must be of non-zero complexity. Given that both explanations fit the facts, Occams Razor might suggest that we should take the simpler of the two -- solution number one. Unfortunately, some argue that there is a third even more simple solution: There isnt an incredibly intricate and complex universe out there. We just imagine that there is. This third option leads us logically towards solipsism, which many people find unacceptable.

22

(. If it is, it doesnt prove religion is True. 2. If its not, why bother with it at all?) The question of whether religion is useful is irrelevant with respect to the question of whether God exists. They are two entirely separate arguments, and should be treated as such. If an opponent tries to use religion is useful as an argument for the existence of God, merely make a reminder that the question at hand concerns religion, not God. Morality Believers tend to claim that without God (or religion), there could be no morality. Right and Wrong, Good and Bad Either: ) God decrees what is right and wrong, and thus morality equals obedience to God; or 2) Right and wrong are independent of God, and God simply recognizes good and evil. If there were intrinsic good and evil: Does God approve of something because it is right, or is something right because God approves of it? If God approves of something because it is right, we cannot know why it is right. Thus, morality exists outside of God, relieving the necessity for God, since people can merely choose to be moral by following right and wrong. In addition, it makes God subject to this independent morality. Therefore, an atheist can be moral. If something is right because God approves of it, then morality is arbitrary, based on the whims of a God. Thus, all of Gods commands (including those in the Bible) are, by definition, good because God gave the commands. Good becomes equal to God, and goodness becomes obedience. There is no intrinsic, absolute good and bad, without the idea of a superior moral dictator. If morality is divinely inspired, how do we know what it is?
23

is Religion useful?

If the answer is scripture, then examine the biblical passage section of the hint book, and ask why, then, are all the commands of scripture not followed, if the theist belief is that the Bible is inerrant or divinely inspired. If its not inerrant or divinely inspired, then it doesnt. Even if God doesnt exist, is the Bible (and 0 Commandments) a good source of moral behavior? The bits and pieces of the Bible that have any positive value can be analyzed and considered as much as the bits and pieces of any book, but the mere fact of the Bible having a few morally upright statements does not mean that the rest of it should be believed or followed, just as we dont follow the Iliad. Sources for Atheist Morality (If no Superior Moral Dictator, Why Not Kill?) Empathy, as tribal beings. Altruism Enlightened self-interest. Being kind can benefit the self and others, indirectly benefiting the self. Secular Ethics Humanism Utilitarianism Anthropocentrism

2

Hope/Prayer Proven ineffective. If argued that God doesnt work that way, or the Bible really doesnt say pray and receive what you pray for: If God exists, then is either: Inconsistently answers prayer, Doesnt answer prayer. Thus, no reason to pray to God with expectation of answer or receiving anything. If God doesnt exist, or if argued that hope/prayer are still valuable and positive with or without God: Alternative to prayer is to actively participate - take action to do something about situation instead of wishing for divine intervention. Thats false hope. Disappointment with Gods inaction, or having hope crumbled, is worse than having false hope. Prayer as a placebo is less desirable than relying on the kindness of other human beings, and much less reliable. Good Deeds Its often argued that religion is good because of its charity. However, the church brainwashes children and others into believing religions unrealistic philosophy. The church does some good, providing for the poor, and providing funding for other charities. Of course, it must do this, lest it have no redeeming qualities. Ultimately, the churchs foundation is a fabrication. There is no reason to help perpetuate its harmful superstitious activities merely because it also happens to do charitable work.

2

is Atheism BAd?
Atheism is not a religion, just as much as lack of belief in Atlantis doesnt make someone a follower of the religion of Anti-Atlanteanism. The question of whether atheism is bad is irrelevant with respect to the question of whether God exists. They are two entirely separate arguments, and should be treated as such. If an opponent tries to use atheism is bad as an argument for the existence of God, merely make a reminder that the question at hand concerns atheism, not God. Common Accusations about Atheism, and their Refutations (Harris 10 (Trimmed)) Atheists Believe that Life is Meaningless Religious people often worry that life is meaningless and imagine that it can only be redeemed by the promise of eternal happiness beyond the grave. Atheists tend to be quite sure that life is precious. Life is imbued with meaning by being really and fully lived. Atheism is Responsible for the Greatest Crimes in Human History Fascism and communism are too much like religions --dogmatic to the core and generally giving rise to personality cults that are indistinguishable from cults of religious hero worship. There is no society in human history that ever suffered because its people became too reasonable.

27

Atheism is Dogmatic Scriptures are so prescient of humanitys needs that they could only have been written under the direction of an omniscient deity? Atheists have considered this claim, read the books, found the claim to be ridiculous. One doesnt have to take anything on faith, or be otherwise dogmatic, to reject unjustified religious beliefs. I contend that we are both atheists. I just believe in one fewer god than you do. When you understand why you dismiss all the other possible gods, you will understand why I dismiss yours. Stephen Henry Roberts (1901-71). Atheists Think Everything in the Universe Arose by Chance No one knows why the universe came into being, if its not infinite. The diversity and complexity we see in the living world is not a product of mere chance. Evolution is a combination of chance mutation and natural selection. Darwin arrived at the phrase natural selection by analogy to the artificial selection performed by breeders of livestock. In both cases, selection exerts a highly non-random effect on the development of any species. Atheism Has no Connection to Science An engagement with scientific thinking tends to erode, rather than support, religious faith. U.S. polls show that about 0% of the general public believes in a personal God; yet 3% of the members of the National Academy of Sciences do not.

2

Atheists are Arrogant When scientists dont know something like why the universe came into being or how the first self-replicating molecules formed they admit it. Pretending to know things one doesnt know is a profound liability in science. And yet it is the life-blood of faith-based religion. Irony: people of faith praise themselves for their humility, while claiming to know facts about cosmology, chemistry and biology that no scientist knows. When considering questions about the nature of the cosmos and our place within it, atheists tend to draw their opinions from science. This isnt arrogance; it is intellectual honesty. Atheists are Closed to Spiritual Experience There is nothing that prevents an atheist from experiencing love, ecstasy, rapture, and awe; atheists can value these experiences and seek them regularly. What atheists dont tend to do is make unjustified (and unjustifiable) claims about the nature of reality on the basis of such experiences. There is no question that some Christians have transformed their lives for the better by reading the Bible and praying to Jesus. What does this prove? It proves that certain disciplines of attention and codes of conduct can have a profound effect upon the human mind. Do the positive experiences of Christians suggest that Jesus is the sole savior of humanity? Not even remotely because Hindus, Buddhists, Muslims and even atheists regularly have similar experiences. There is, in fact, not a Christian on this Earth who can be certain that Jesus even wore a beard, much less that he was born of a virgin or rose from the dead. These are just not the sort of claims that spiritual experience can authenticate.

2

Atheists Believe That There is Nothing Beyond Human Life and Human Understanding Atheists are free to admit the limits of human understanding in a way that religious people are not. It is obvious that we do not fully understand the universe; but it is even more obvious that neither the Bible nor the Koran reflects our best understanding of it. We do not know whether there is complex life elsewhere in the cosmos, but there might be. If there is, such beings could have developed an understanding of natures laws that vastly exceeds our own. Atheists can freely entertain such possibilities. They also can admit that if brilliant extraterrestrials exist, the contents of the Bible and the Koran will be even less impressive to them than they are to human atheists. From the atheist point of view, the worlds religions utterly trivialize the real beauty and immensity of the universe. One doesnt have to accept anything on insufficient evidence to make such an observation. Atheists Ignore the Fact That Religion is Extremely Beneficial to Society Those who emphasize the good effects of religion never seem to realize that such effects fail to demonstrate the truth of any religious doctrine. This is why we have terms such as wishful thinking and selfdeception. There is a profound distinction between a consoling delusion and the truth. In any case, the good effects of religion can surely be disputed. In most cases, it seems that religion gives people bad reasons to behave well, when good reasons are actually available. Ask yourself, which is more moral, helping the poor out of concern for their suffering, or doing so because you think the creator of the universe wants you to do it, will reward you for doing it or will punish you for not doing it?
30

Atheism Provides no Basis for Morality If a person doesnt already understand that cruelty is wrong, he wont discover this by reading the Bible or the Koran as these books are bursting with celebrations of cruelty, both human and divine. We do not get our morality from religion. We decide what is good in our good books by recourse to moral intuitions that are (at some level) hard-wired in us and that have been refined by thousands of years of thinking about the causes and possibilities of human happiness. We have made considerable moral progress over the years, and we didnt make this progress by reading the Bible or the Koran more closely. Both books condone the practice of slavery and yet every civilized human being now recognizes that slavery is an abomination. Whatever is good in scripture like the golden rule can be valued for its ethical wisdom without our believing that it was handed down to us by the creator of the universe.

It does *not* mean dung, and there is a perfectly adequate Hebrew word for that, which could have been used. Furthermore, the phrase translated chew the cud in the KJV is more exactly bring up the cud. Rabbits do not bring up anything; they let it go all the way through, then eat it again. The description given in Leviticus is inaccurate, and thats that. Rabbits do eat their own dung; they do not bring anything up and chew on it. Order of creation Here is the order in the first (Genesis 1), the Priestly tradition: Day : Sky, Earth, light Day 2: Water, both in ocean basins and above the sky(!) Day 3: Plants Day : Sun, Moon, stars (as calendrical and navigational aids) Day 5: Sea monsters (whales), fish, birds, land animals, creepycrawlies (reptiles, insects, etc.) Day 6: Humans (apparently both sexes at the same time) Day 7: Nothing (the Gods took the first day off anyone ever did) Note that there are days, evenings, and mornings before the Sun was created. Here, the Deity is referred to as Elohim, which is a plural, thus the literal translation, the Gods. In this tale, the Gods seem satisfied with what they have done, saying after each step that it was good. The second one (Genesis 2), the Yahwist tradition, goes: Earth and heavens (misty) Adam, the first man (on a desolate Earth) Plants Animals Eve, the first woman (from Adams rib)

How orderly were things created? #: Step-by-step. The only discrepancy is that there is no Sun or Moon or stars on the first three days. #2: God fixes things up as he goes. The first man is lonely, and is not satisfied with animals. God finally creates a woman for him. As is stated on the Clarifying Christianity website, they believe that The Bible is not a science book, yet it is scientifically accurate. We are not aware of any scientific evidence that contradicts the Bible. (http://www.clarifyingchristianity.com/science.shtml) Perhaps those at Clarifying Christianity havent actually read the whole Bible The point of this exercise is to show that the Bible is wrought with inaccuracies a divine, omniscient being ought to have known. It makes the Bible not inerrant, not proof of divine inspiration, and certainly not scientifically accurate. Here are just a few examples of where the Bible contradicts science:

This Bullshit Detector, a modernized tribute to the great Carl Sagan, is meant as a means to determine whether someone is trying either intentionally or unintentionally to dominate an argument by means of fallacies or fraudulent statements.

hoW to PResent A PRoPeR ARgument

Create and test multiple working hypotheses. Dont stick with the first hypothesis that comes to mind or that looks good. Dont get overly attached to your own hypothesis. Try to find reasons to reject it. Test to systematically disprove multiple alternative possibilities. Hypothesis that resists disproof among multiple working hypotheses is more likely right. We dont decide the winner among hypotheses, the experimentation decides. Independent confirmation of the facts. Substantive debate on the evidence by knowledgeable proponents of all points of view. Avoid arguments from authority. Quantify. Numerical quantities and measurements, are tools by which to discriminate among competing hypotheses. Vague and qualitative hypotheses are ambiguous. Sometimes there will be qualitative issues to confront, but quantify whenever possible. All the links in a chain argument must work, including the premise. Occams razor -- choose the simpler of two hypotheses that explain the data equally well. Falsifiability. A valid hypothesis must be, in principle, falsifiable -- shown to be false by unambiguous, duplicable experimentation. Untestable, unfalsifiable propositions are of little value. Use double blind control experimentation -- where neither the measurer nor the subjects are aware of the test and control

subjects. Separate the variables in an experiment. Isolate potential causes of effects by removing as many extra variables as possible.

hoW to detect fAllAcies

ad hominem -- attacking or appealing to the arguer, not the argument Opposite of appeal to authority. Can be used to challenge a persons credibility (as in a witness testimonial) ad hominem abusive / or ad personam -- insulting, belittling, an opponent, even if pointing out facts. ad hominem circumstantial -- attacks the bias of the opponent. ad hominem tu quoque -- an irrelevant accusation of hypocrisy. Guilt by association -- A makes claim X. C also makes claim X. A is B. Argument by authority/Appeal to authority -- basing the truth value of a claim on the authority, knowledge, or position of the claimant. The validity of a claim does not follow from the credibility of the source. Two forms: 1. Authority is influential, but not related to the subject of the claim -- an endorsement of a product by a celebrity, for instance. 2. Authority is related to the subject of the claim (often an expert in the field; and therefore makes the claim appear more likely true). Argument from adverse consequences -- were it not for the threat of hell, humans would be lawless and dangerous, thus hell, and God, must exist. Argument from ignorance -- claiming that a premise is true only because it has not been proved false or that a premise is false only because it has not been proved true. Absence of evidence is
70

not evidence of absence. Special pleading -- introducing favorable details or excluding unfavorable details by alleging a need to apply additional considerations without proper criticism of these considerations themselves. . Attempting to cite something as an exemption to a generally accepted rule, principle, etc. without justifying the exemption. 2. How can God be omnipotent and omnibenevolent and still commit all the atrocities detailed in the Bible? Special plead: Its not God, its free will. or, God works in mysterious ways. Begging the question/assuming the answer -- where the conclusion of an argument is implicitly or explicitly assumed in one of the premises. This is a material fallacy, not a logical fallacy. In other words, the argument will be valid (true premises), but not sound. Does not mean prompts the question. Format: p implies q, q implies r, r implies p, suppose p, therefore q, therefore r, therefore, p. Example: We know God exists because we can see the perfect order of His Creation, an order which demonstrates supernatural intelligence in its design. 1. Conclusion = God exists. 2. Premise assumes a Creator and Designer of the universe exists, i.e., that God exists. 3. Claimant should be made to provide support for the claim that the universe exhibits intelligent design. Observational selection/enumeration of favorable circumstances -- boasting of successes without mention of the failures, or dumbing down negatives. Statistics of small numbers -- You say one out of every five people is a homosexual. Thats obviously wrong, since I know hundreds of people, and none are homosexuals.
7

Misunderstanding of the nature of statistics -- does it surprise you that half the population is below average intelligence? Inconsistency Consider it reasonable for the Universe to continue to exist forever into the future, but judge absurd the possibility that it has infinite duration into the past. Prudently plan for the worst of which a potential military adversary is capable, but thriftily ignore scientific projections on environmental dangers because theyre not proved. non sequitur -- the conclusion does not follow from the premise. Common format: - If God loves us, we will win the war. We won the war. Therefore, God must love us. . If A is true, then B is true. 2. B is stated to be true. 3. Therefore, A must be true. Denying the antecedent: - If I am a citizen, then I am a human. Im not a citizen, therefore, I am not a human. . If A, then B. 2. Not A. 3. Therefore, not B. post hoc, ergo propter hoc -- false cause, coincidental correlation -- asserts that because one thing follows another, the first must be the cause of the second. False dichotomy/excluded middle - Youre either working for us or for XCorp. Youre not working for us, so you must be working for XCorp. Excludes the possibility of working for someone else, or no one. Short-term vs. long-term -- rejecting a long-term proposal by way of making a short-term proposal seem more pertinent. Slippery slope -- If we allow gay marriages, soon people will be wanting to marry their pets. Confusion of correlation and causation.
72

Meaningless question -- irresistible force vs. an immovable object? (the existence of one precludes the other, by definition, so the question is meaningless) Straw man -- to create a position easy to refute, then attribute that position to an opponent. Examples of straw man setups: . Present a misrepresentation of the opponents position, refute it, and pretend that the opponents actual position has been refuted. 2. Quote an opponents words out of context -- i.e., choose quotations that are not representative of the opponents actual intentions. 3. Present someone who defends a position poorly as the defender, refute that persons arguments, and pretend that every upholder of that position, and thus the position itself, has been defeated. 4. Invent a fictitious persona with actions or beliefs that are criticized, and pretend that the person represents a group of whom the speaker is critical. . Oversimplify a persons argument into a simple analogy, which can then be attacked. Weasel words -- intended to, or has the effect of, softening the force of a potentially loaded or otherwise controversial statement. Such as calling a bloody war an Operation.

Quotes
Remember, quoting a celebritys views on God or religion, no matter how insightful, no matter how intelligent, influential, or famous the celebrity, is an appeal to authority, and thus should not be used in actual argumentation. -Me I do not believe in God because I do not believe in Mother Goose. -Clarence Darrow If God kills, lies, cheats, discriminates, and otherwise behaves in a manner that puts the Mafia to shame, thats okay, hes God. He can do whatever he wants. Anyone who adheres to this philosophy has had his sense of morality, decency, justice and humaneness warped beyond recognition by the very book that is supposedly preaching the opposite. -Dennis McKinsey Calling Atheism a religion is like calling bald a hair color. -Don Hirschberg My atheism, like that of Spinoza, is true piety towards the universe and denies only gods fashioned by men in their own image to be servants of their human interests. -George Santayana When I told the people of Northern Ireland that I was an atheist, a woman in the audience stood up and said, Yes, but is it the God of the Catholics or the God of the Protestants in whom you dont believe? -Quentin Crisp Question with boldness even the existence of a God; because, if there be one, he must more approve of the homage of reason, than that of blind-folded fear. -Thomas Jefferson
7

I cannot believe in a God who wants to be praised all the time. -Friedrich Nietzsche I contend that we are both atheists. I just believe in one fewer god than you do. When you understand why you dismiss all the other possible gods, you will understand why I dismiss yours. -Stephen Roberts A thorough reading and understanding of the Bible is the surest path to atheism. -Donald Morgan It is an interesting and demonstrable fact, that all children are atheists and were religion not inculcated into their minds, they would remain so. -Ernestine Rose There can be but little liberty on earth while men worship a tyrant in heaven. -Robert Green Ingersoll A religion without a goddess is halfway to atheism. -Dion Fortune

Sam Harris 0 mythsand 0 TruthsAbout Atheism By Sam Harris December 2, 200 The Los Angeles Times SEVERAL POLLS indicate that the term atheism has acquired such an extraordinary stigma in the United States that being an atheist is now a perfect impediment to a career in politics (in a way that being black, Muslim or homosexual is not). According to a recent Newsweek poll, only 37% of Americans would vote for an otherwise qualified atheist for president. Atheists are often imagined to be intolerant, immoral, depressed, blind to the beauty of nature and dogmatically closed to evidence of the supernatural. Even John Locke, one of the great patriarchs of the Enlightenment, believed that atheism was not at all to be tolerated because, he said, promises, covenants and oaths, which are the bonds of human societies, can have no hold upon an atheist. That was more than 300 years ago. But in the United States today, little seems to have changed. A remarkable 7% of the population claims never to doubt the existence of God; fewer than 0% identify themselves as atheists and their reputation appears to be deteriorating. Given that we know that atheists are often among the most intelligent and scientifically literate people in any society, it seems important to deflate the myths that prevent them from playing a larger role in our national discourse. ) Atheists believe that life is meaningless.
7

On the contrary, religious people often worry that life is meaningless and imagine that it can only be redeemed by the promise of eternal happiness beyond the grave. Atheists tend to be quite sure that life is precious. Life is imbued with meaning by being really and fully lived. Our relationships with those we love are meaningful now; they need not last forever to be made so. Atheists tend to find this fear of meaninglessness well meaningless. 2) Atheism is responsible for the greatest crimes in human history. People of faith often claim that the crimes of Hitler, Stalin, Mao and Pol Pot were the inevitable product of unbelief. The problem with fascism and communism, however, is not that they are too critical of religion; the problem is that they are too much like religions. Such regimes are dogmatic to the core and generally give rise to personality cults that are indistinguishable from cults of religious hero worship. Auschwitz, the gulag and the killing fields were not examples of what happens when human beings reject religious dogma; they are examples of political, racial and nationalistic dogma run amok. There is no society in human history that ever suffered because its people became too reasonable. 3) Atheism is dogmatic. Jews, Christians and Muslims claim that their scriptures are so prescient of humanitys needs that they could only have been written under the direction of an omniscient deity. An atheist is simply a person who has considered this claim, read the books and found the claim to be ridiculous. One doesnt have to take anything on faith, or be otherwise dogmatic, to reject unjustified religious beliefs. As the historian Stephen Henry Roberts (0-7) once said: I contend that we are both atheists. I just believe in one fewer god than you do. When you understand why you dismiss all the other possible gods, you will understand why I dismiss yours. ) Atheists think everything in the universe arose by chance.
0

No one knows why the universe came into being. In fact, it is not entirely clear that we can coherently speak about the beginning or creation of the universe at all, as these ideas invoke the concept of time, and here we are talking about the origin of space-time itself. The notion that atheists believe that everything was created by chance is also regularly thrown up as a criticism of Darwinian evolution. As Richard Dawkins explains in his marvelous book, The God Delusion, this represents an utter misunderstanding of evolutionary theory. Although we dont know precisely how the Earths early chemistry begat biology, we know that the diversity and complexity we see in the living world is not a product of mere chance. Evolution is a combination of chance mutation and natural selection. Darwin arrived at the phrase natural selection by analogy to the artificial selection performed by breeders of livestock. In both cases, selection exerts a highly non-random effect on the development of any species. ) Atheism has no connection to science. Although it is possible to be a scientist and still believe in God as some scientists seem to manage it there is no question that an engagement with scientific thinking tends to erode, rather than support, religious faith. Taking the U.S. population as an example: Most polls show that about 0% of the general public believes in a personal God; yet 3% of the members of the National Academy of Sciences do not. This suggests that there are few modes of thinking less congenial to religious faith than science is. ) Atheists are arrogant. When scientists dont know something like why the universe came into being or how the first self-replicating molecules formed they admit it. Pretending to know things one doesnt know is a profound liability in science. And yet it is the life-blood of faithbased religion. One of the monumental ironies of religious discourse can be found in the frequency with which people of faith

praise themselves for their humility, while claiming to know facts about cosmology, chemistry and biology that no scientist knows. When considering questions about the nature of the cosmos and our place within it, atheists tend to draw their opinions from science. This isnt arrogance; it is intellectual honesty. 7) Atheists are closed to spiritual experience. There is nothing that prevents an atheist from experiencing love, ecstasy, rapture and awe; atheists can value these experiences and seek them regularly. These are just not the sort of claims that spiritual experience can authenticate. ) Atheists believe that there is nothing beyond human life and human understanding. Atheists are free to admit the limits of human understanding in a way that religious people are not. They also can admit that if brilliant extraterrestrials exist, the contents of the Bible and the Koran will be even less impressive to them
2

than they are to human atheists. From the atheist point of view, the worlds religions utterly trivialize the real beauty and immensity of the universe. One doesnt have to accept anything on insufficient evidence to make such an observation. 9) Atheists ignore the fact that religion is extremely beneficial to society. Those who emphasize the good effects of religion never seem to realize that such effects fail to demonstrate the truth of any religious doctrine. This is why we have terms such as wishful thinking and self-deception. 0) Atheism provides no basis for morality. If a person doesnt already understand that cruelty is wrong, he wont discover this by reading the Bible or the Koran as these books are bursting with celebrations of cruelty, both human and divine. Both books condone the practice of slavery and yet every civilized human being now recognizes that slavery is
3

an abomination. Whatever is good in scripture like the golden rule can be valued for its ethical wisdom without our believing that it was handed down to us by the creator of the universe. http://www.samharris.org/site/full_text/0-myths-and-0-truthsabout-atheism/

Gods Enemies Are More Honest Than His Friends Sam Harris For better or worse, I am partly responsible for the recent emergence of atheism as a topic of conversation. This is somewhat ironic, as I do not like the term and rarely use it. I did not, for instance, refer to myself as an atheist when I wrote The End of Faithand yet this book is my most substantial contribution to the discourse of atheism. As I pointed out in my subsequent book, Letter to a Christian Nation, we do not have a term for a person who rejects astrology, nor do we need one. If legions of astrologers sought to bend our public policy to their pseudo-science, we wouldnt need to dub ourselves non-astrologers to put them in their place. Words like reason, evidence, and commonsense would suffice. So it should be with religion. Still, one can only spend so much time quibbling over words, and there are far more consequential matters for believers and nonbelievers to discuss. Despite my misgivings about answering to the name atheist, I consider the stigma now associated with the term to be entirely unwarranted. This stigma is, of course, the continuous product of the inane and unctuous declarations that still pass for argument among the faithful. One need look no further than the responses to this weeks question to find some mesmerizing examples. As to whether atheists and believers can have a productive conversation, I am quite sure that the answer is yes. But I am uncertain whether this conversation can bear fruit quickly enough to keep civilization from becoming fully engorged by Iron Age stupidity and horror. Our capacity for self-destruction is now spreading with 21st century efficiency, and yet our beliefs about how we should pass our days and nights on this earth still spring from ancient literature. This marriage of modern technology and preliterate superstition

is a bad one, for reasons that I should not have to specify, much less argue forand yet, arguing for them has taken up most of my time since September th, 200, the day that nineteen pious men showed our pious nation just how beneficial religious certainty can be. As someone who has spent the last few years publicly criticizing religion, I have become quite familiar with how people of faith rise to the defense of God. As it turns out, there arent a hundred ways of doing this. There appear to be just three: either a person argues that a specific religion is true, or he argues that religion is useful, or he simply attacks atheism as intolerant, elitist, irrational, or otherwise worthy of contempt. Any conversation between atheists and believers is liable to fall into one or more of these ruts, or lurch back and forth between them: . Religion is true: There are two problems with arguing that any one of the worlds religions is true. First, as Bertrand Russell pointed out a century ago, the major religions make incompatible claims about God and about what human beings must believe in order to escape the fires of hell. Given the sheer diversity of these claims, every believer should expect damnation on mere, probabilistic grounds. The second problem with arguing for the truth of religion is that the evidence for the most common religious doctrines is terrible or nonexistentand this subsumes all claims about the existence of a personal God, the divine origin of certain books, the virgin birth of certain people, the veracity of ancient miracles, etc. For thousands of years, religion has been a haven for dogmatism and false certainty, and it remains so. There is not a person on this earth who has sufficient reason to be certain that Jesus rose from the dead or that Muhammad spoke to the angel Gabriel in his cave. And yet, billions of people profess such certainty. This is embarrassing. It is also dangerousand we should stop making apologies for it. 2. Religion is useful: The argument that religion is useful is also

problematicand many of its problems are enunciated daily by bomb-blasts. Can anyone seriously argue that it is a good thing that millions of Muslims currently believe in the metaphysics of martyrdom? Is it really so useful that many Jews imagine that the Creator of the universe gave them a patch of desert on the Mediterranean? How psychologically beneficial has Christianitys anxiety about sex been these last seventy generations? The worst problem with arguing for religions usefulness, however, is that it is utterly irrelevant to the question at hand: the fact that a belief might be useful is no argument that it is true. While there are many ways to illustrate this, here is how I recently made the point in an online debate: The fact that certain religious beliefs might be useful in no way suggests their legitimacy. I can guarantee, for instance, that the following religion, invented by me in the last ten seconds, would be extraordinarily useful. It is called Scientismo. Here is its creed: Be kind to others; do not lie, steal, or murder; and oblige your children to master mathematics and science to the best of their abilities or 7 demons will torture you with hot tongs for eternity after death. If I could spread this faith to billions, I have little doubt that we would live in a better world than we do at present. Would this suggest that the 7 demons of Scientismo exist? Useful delusions are not the same thing as true beliefs. 3. Atheism is bad: Rather than argue for the truth of their religious beliefs, or produce evidence that religion is useful, apologists for God often attack atheism as though it were another religion. We are told that atheism is dogmatic, intolerant, irrational, etc. This homily has the virtue of being easy to remember and reproduceand it now reverberates ceaselessly within the echo-chamber of American religious discourse. It relies, however, on a many false ideas about atheism. On Christmas eve of this year, I published an essay in the Los Angeles Times entitled 0 Myths and 0 Truths about Atheism in which I attempted to set the record straight. I wont repeat these points here. Those interested can find this article on my website.

Biblical Passages NT vs OT Argument (or: the argument that the coming of Jesus made the OT moot) * Deuteronomy :- See, I have taught you decrees and laws as the LORD my God commanded me, so that you may follow them in the land you are entering to take possession of it. Observe them carefully, for this will show your wisdom and understanding to the nations, who will hear about all these decrees and say, Surely this great nation is a wise and understanding people. What other nation is so great as to have their gods near them the way the LORD our God is near us whenever we pray to him? And what other nation is so great as to have such righteous decrees and laws as this body of laws I am setting before you today? * Matthew :7- Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. I tell you the truth, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished. Anyone who breaks one of the least of these commandments and teaches others to do the same will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever practices and teaches these commands will be called great in the kingdom of heaven. Slavery * Exodus 2:20-2 If a man beats his male or female slave with a rod and the slave dies as a direct result, he must be punished, but he is not to be punished if the slave gets up after a day or two, since the slave is his property. * Colossians 3:22-2 Slaves, obey your earthly masters in everything; and do it, not only when their eye is on you and to win their favor, but with sincerity of heart and reverence for the Lord. Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for men, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving.

* Ephesians : - Slaves, obey your earthly masters with respect and fear, and with sincerity of heart, just as you would obey Christ. * Peter 2:3 - Submit yourselves for the Lords sake to every authority instituted among men: whether to the king, as the supreme authority. * Peter 2: - Slaves, submit yourselves to your masters with all respect, not only to those who are good and considerate, but also to those who are harsh. * Timothy : - All who are under the yoke of slavery should consider their masters worthy of full respect, so that Gods name and our teaching may not be slandered. * Some Christians claim that Biblical slaves are supposed to be released after six years, and therefore Biblical slavery is more just than our modern conception of slavery. This is not the case. The passage in question, Exodus 2:-, only refers to freeing Hebrew slaves. Foreign slaves are forever your property, to be passed down to your children (in contrast to Israelite slaves): o Leviticus 2:- Your male and female slaves are to come from the nations around you; from them you may buy slaves. You may also buy some of the temporary residents living among you and members of their clans born in your country, and they will become your property. You can will them to your children as inherited property and can make them slaves for life, but you must not rule over your fellow Israelites ruthlessly. * God commands you to enslave people who you conquer in the course of normal, non-holy warfare: o Deuteronomy 20:0- When you march up to attack a city, make its people an offer of peace. If they accept and open their gates, all the people in it shall be subject to forced labor and shall work for you. If they refuse to make peace and they engage you in battle, lay siege to that city. When the LORD your God delivers it into your hand, put to the sword all the men in it. As for the women, the children, the livestock and everything else in the city, you may take these as plunder for yourselves. And you may use the plunder the LORD your God gives you from your enemies. This is how you are to treat all the cities that are at a distance from you and do not belong to the nations nearby.

Women * Leviticus 20:0 - If a man commits adultery with another mans wifewith the wife of his neighborboth the adulterer and the adulteress must be put to death. * Numbers :-3 - If a man suspects his wife of adultery, he can force her to undertake a trial by fire where she drinks a magic potion that makes her barren if she is guilty. This is similar to the trial by water in the Code of Hammurabi where suspected adulteresses are thrown into a river to see if they float. (Note that there is no such test for men suspected of adultery, only women.) * Virgins fetched a higher brideprice than non-virgins. As such, if a newlywed misrepresents her virginityby failing to prove she is a virgin on her wedding nightGod says she should be stoned to death on the doorstep of her fathers house. (Note: no such law is found in the Code of Hammurabi.) * Deuteronomy 22:3-2 If a man takes a wife and, after lying with her, dislikes her and slanders her and gives her a bad name, saying, I married this woman, but when I approached her, I did not find proof of her virginity, then the girls father and mother shall bring proof that she was a virgin to the town elders at the gate. The girls father will say to the elders, I gave my daughter in marriage to this man, but he dislikes her. Now he has slandered her and said, I did not find your daughter to be a virgin. But here is the proof of my daughters virginity. Then her parents shall display the cloth before the elders of the town, and the elders shall take the man and punish him. They shall fine him a hundred shekels of silver and give them to the girls father, because this man has given an Israelite virgin a bad name. She shall continue to be his wife; he must not divorce her as long as he lives. If, however, the charge is true and no proof of the girls virginity can be found, she shall be brought to the door of her fathers house and there the men of her town shall stone her to death. She has done a disgraceful thing in Israel by being promiscuous while still in her fathers house. You must purge the evil from among you. * Rape is not punishable as a crime in the Bible. If a man rapes a married or betrothed woman, he is punished for the crime of

adultery. If the victim fails to cry out loudly enough while she is raped, it is assumed that she is accomplice to adultery and she is killed as well. * Deuteronomy 22:23-27 - If a man happens to meet in a town a virgin pledged to be married and he sleeps with her, you shall take both of them to the gate of that town and stone them to deaththe girl because she was in a town and did not scream for help, and the man because he violated another mans wife. You must purge the evil from among you. But if out in the country a man happens to meet a girl pledged to be married and rapes her, only the man who has done this shall die. Do nothing to the girl; she has committed no sin deserving death. This case is like that of someone who attacks and murders his neighbor, for the man found the girl out in the country, and though the betrothed girl screamed, there was no one to rescue her. * If a man rapes a virgin who is not betrothedthat is, who does not belong to another manthere is no punishment. The rapist pays his victims father the brideprice and marries her. He cannot divorce her (apparently God thought this was for the girls benefit). Again, rape is not punished at all: this law essentially states, you break it, you buy it. o Deuteronomy 22:2-2 - If a man happens to meet a virgin who is not pledged to be married and rapes her and they are discovered, he shall pay the girls father fifty shekels of silver. He must marry the girl, for he has violated her. He can never divorce her as long as he lives. o Note that the 0 shekels the rapist pays for his victims brideprice is half of what a man must pay to a womans father if he unjustly slanders her virginity, per Deuteronomy 22:. God felt that sullying a fathers honor by accusing his daughter of having unmarried sex is worth twice as much monetary compensation as raping his daughter. Speaking of monetary values, God also makes it explicit that women are worth a little more than half as much as men: * Leviticus 27:2-7 - If anyone makes a special vow to dedicate persons to the LORD by giving equivalent values, set the value of a male between the ages of twenty and sixty at fifty shekels of silver, according to the sanctuary shekel; and if it is a female, set her value at thirty shekels. If it is a person between the ages of
2

five and twenty, set the value of a male at twenty shekels and of a female at ten shekels. If it is a person between one month and five years, set the value of a male at five shekels of silver and that of a female at three shekels of silver. If it is a person sixty years old or more, set the value of a male at fifteen shekels and of a female at ten shekels. * Women are considered worthless from a legal perspective -- the theology of both the Old and New Testament supports their inherent worthlessness. * Genesis 3: - To the woman he said, I will greatly increase your pains in childbearing; with pain you will give birth to children. Your desire will be for your husband, and he will rule over you. * Genesis :-- Before they had gone to bed, all the men from every part of the city of Sodomboth young and oldsurrounded the house. They called to Lot, Where are the men who came to you tonight? Bring them out to us so that we can have sex with them. Lot went outside to meet them and shut the door behind him and said, No, my friends. Dont do this wicked thing. Look, I have two daughters who have never slept with a man. Let me bring them out to you, and you can do what you like with them. But dont do anything to these men, for they have come under the protection of my roof. * Timothy 2:-2 A woman should learn in quietness and full submission. I do not permit a woman to teach or to have authority over a man; she must be silent. * Matthew 2: - At that time the kingdom of heaven will be like ten virgins who took their lamps and went out to meet the bridegroom. * Corinthians :3-0 - Now I want you to realize that the head of every man is Christ, and the head of the woman is man, and the head of Christ is God. Every man who prays or prophesies with his head covered dishonors his head. And every woman who prays or prophesies with her head uncovered dishonors her headit is just as though her head were shaved. If a woman does not cover her head, she should have her hair cut off; and if it is a disgrace for a woman to have her hair cut or shaved off, she should cover her head. A man ought not to cover his head,a since he is the image and glory of God; but the woman is the glory of
3

man. For man did not come from woman, but woman from man; neither was man created for woman, but woman for man. For this reason, and because of the angels, the woman ought to have a sign of authority on her head. * Corinthians :33-3 - For God is not a God of disorder but of peace. As in all the congregations of the saints, women should remain silent in the churches. They are not allowed to speak, but must be in submission, as the Law says. If they want to inquire about something, they should ask their own husbands at home; for it is disgraceful for a woman to speak in the church. God Demanding Murder * Exodus 3:2 For six days, work is to be done, but the seventh day shall be your holy day, a Sabbath of rest to the LORD. Whoever does any work on it must be put to death. * Deuteronomy 2:-2 If a man has a stubborn and rebellious son who does not obey his father and mother and will not listen to them when they discipline him, his father and mother shall take hold of him and bring him to the elders at the gate of his town. They shall say to the elders, This son of ours is stubborn and rebellious. He will not obey us. He is a profligate and a drunkard. Then all the men of his town shall stone him to death. You must purge the evil from among you. All Israel will hear of it and be afraid. * Leviticus 20:3 If a man lies with a man as one lies with a woman, both of them have done what is detestable. They must be put to death; their blood will be on their own heads. * Deuteronomy 25:11-12 If two men are fighting and the wife of one of them comes to rescue her husband from his assailant, and she reaches out and seizes him by his private parts, you shall cut off her hand. Show her no pity. * Deuteronomy 20:0- When you march up to attack a city, make its people an offer of peace. If they accept and open their gates, all the people in it shall be subject to forced labor and shall work for you. If they refuse to make peace and they engage you in battle, lay siege to that city. When the LORD your God delivers it into your hand, put to the sword all the men in it. As for the women, the children, the livestock and everything else in

the city, you may take these as plunder for yourselves. And you may use the plunder the LORD your God gives you from your enemies. This is how you are to treat all the cities that are at a distance from you and do not belong to the nations nearby. However, in the cities of the nations the LORD your God is giving you as an inheritance, do not leave alive anything that breathes. * Isaiah 3:3- Therefore I will make the heavens tremble; and the earth will shake from its place at the wrath of the LORD Almighty, in the day of his burning anger. Like a hunted gazelle, like sheep without a shepherd, each will return to his own people, each will flee to his native land. Whoever is captured will be thrust through; all who are caught will fall by the sword. Their infants will be dashed to pieces before their eyes; their houses will be looted and their wives ravished. * Numbers 31:14-18 Moses was angry with the officers of the armythe commanders of thousands and commanders of hundredswho returned from the battle. Have you allowed all the women to live? he asked them. They were the ones who followed Balaams advice and were the means of turning the Israelites away from the LORD in what happened at Peor, so that a plague struck the LORDs people. Now kill all the boys. And kill every woman who has slept with a man, but save for yourselves every girl who has never slept with a man. Absurdities * Leviticus 2:7-2 - Say to Aaron: For the generations to come none of your descendants who has a defect may come near to offer the food of his God. No man who has any defect may come near: no man who is blind or lame, disfigured or deformed; no man with a crippled foot or hand, or who is hunchbacked or dwarfed, or who has any eye defect, or who has festering or running sores or damaged testicles. No descendant of Aaron the priest who has any defect is to come near to present the offerings made to the LORD by fire. He has a defect; he must not come near to offer the food of his God. He may eat the most holy food of his God, as well as the holy food; yet because of his defect, he must not go near the curtain or approach the altar, and so desecrate my sanctuary. I am the LORD, who makes them holy. So

Moses told this to Aaron and his sons and to all the Israelites. * Genesis :-7 - The LORD was grieved that he had made man on the earth, and his heart was filled with pain. So the LORD said, I will wipe mankind, whom I have created, from the face of the earthmen and animals, and creatures that move along the ground, and birds of the airfor I am grieved that I have made them. * Luke :2 If anyone comes to me and does not hate his father and mother, his wife and children, his brothers and sistersyes, even his own lifehe cannot be my disciple. * Genesis 30:37-3 - Jacob, however, took fresh-cut branches from poplar, almond and plane trees and made white stripes on them by peeling the bark and exposing the white inner wood of the branches. Then he placed the peeled branches in all the watering troughs, so that they would be directly in front of the flocks when they came to drink. When the flocks were in heat and came to drink, they mated in front of the branches. And they bore young that were streaked or speckled or spotted. Killing Children * Exodus 2:2-30 - The Israelites did just what the LORD commanded Moses and Aaron. At midnight the LORD struck down all the firstborn in Egypt, from the firstborn of Pharaoh, who sat on the throne, to the firstborn of the prisoner, who was in the dungeon, and the firstborn of all the livestock as well. Pharaoh and all his officials and all the Egyptians got up during the night, and there was loud wailing in Egypt, for there was not a house without someone dead. * Isaiah 3:- - Whoever is captured will be thrust through; all who are caught will fall by the sword. Their infants will be dashed to pieces before their eyes; their houses will be looted and their wives ravished. See, I will stir up against them the Medes, who do not care for silver and have no delight in gold. Their bows will strike down the young men; they will have no mercy on infants nor will they look with compassion on children. * Jeremiah :20-2 - Therefore, hear what the LORD has planned against Edom, what he has purposed against those who

live in Teman: The young of the flock will be dragged away; he will completely destroy their pasture because of them. At the sound of their fall the earth will tremble; their cry will resound to the Red Sea. * Hosea 13:16 - The people of Samaria must bear their guilt, because they have rebelled against their God. They will fall by the sword; their little ones will be dashed to the ground, their pregnant women ripped open. * Deuteronomy 3:-7 - Next we turned and went up along the road toward Bashan, and Og king of Bashan with his whole army marched out to meet us in battle at Edrei. 2 The LORD said to me, Do not be afraid of him, for I have handed him over to you with his whole army and his land. Do to him what you did to Sihon king of the Amorites, who reigned in Heshbon. 3 So the LORD our God also gave into our hands Og king of Bashan and all his army. We struck them down, leaving no survivors. At that time we took all his cities. There was not one of the sixty cities that we did not take from themthe whole region of Argob, Ogs kingdom in Bashan. 5 All these cities were fortified with high walls and with gates and bars, and there were also a great many unwalled villages. We completely destroyed them, as we had done with Sihon king of Heshbon, destroying every citymen, women and children. 7 But all the livestock and the plunder from their cities we carried off for ourselves. (They massacred all the men, women and children in 0 cities at Gods request.) Sacrifice * Leviticus - The LORD called to Moses and spoke to him from the Tent of Meeting. He said, Speak to the Israelites and say to them: When any of you brings an offering to the LORD, bring as your offering an animal from either the herd or the flock. If the offering is a burnt offering from the herd, he is to offer a male without defect. He must present it at the entrance to the Tent of Meeting so that it a will be acceptable to the LORD. He is to lay his hand on the head of the burnt offering, and it will be accepted on his behalf to make atonement for him. He is to slaughter the young bull before the LORD, and then Aarons sons the priests shall bring the blood and sprinkle it against the altar
7

on all sides at the entrance to the Tent of Meeting. He is to skin the burnt offering and cut it into pieces. The sons of Aaron the priest are to put fire on the altar and arrange wood on the fire. Then Aarons sons the priests shall arrange the pieces, including the head and the fat, on the burning wood that is on the altar. He is to wash the inner parts and the legs with water, and the priest is to burn all of it on the altar. It is a burnt offering, an offering made by fire, an aroma pleasing to the LORD. If the offering is a burnt offering from the flock, from either the sheep or the goats, he is to offer a male without defect. He is to slaughter it at the north side of the altar before the LORD, and Aarons sons the priests shall sprinkle its blood against the altar on all sides. He is to cut it into pieces, and the priest shall arrange them, including the head and the fat, on the burning wood that is on the altar. He is to wash the inner parts and the legs with water, and the priest is to bring all of it and burn it on the altar. It is a burnt offering, an offering made by fire, an aroma pleasing to the LORD. If the offering to the LORD is a burnt offering of birds, he is to offer a dove or a young pigeon. The priest shall bring it to the altar, wring off the head and burn it on the altar; its blood shall be drained out on the side of the altar. He is to remove the crop with its contents b and throw it to the east side of the altar, where the ashes are. He shall tear it open by the wings, not severing it completely, and then the priest shall burn it on the wood that is on the fire on the altar. It is a burnt offering, an offering made by fire, an aroma pleasing to the LORD. * Leviticus 8:14-24 - He then presented the bull for the sin offering, and Aaron and his sons laid their hands on its head. Moses slaughtered the bull and took some of the blood, and with his finger he put it on all the horns of the altar to purify the altar. He poured out the rest of the blood at the base of the altar. So he consecrated it to make atonement for it. Moses also took all the fat around the inner parts, the covering of the liver, and both kidneys and their fat, and burned it on the altar. But the bull with its hide and its flesh and its offal he burned up outside the camp, as the LORD commanded Moses. He then presented the ram for the burnt offering, and Aaron and his sons laid their hands on its head. Then Moses slaughtered the ram and sprinkled the blood against the altar on all sides. He cut the ram into pieces and

burned the head, the pieces and the fat. He washed the inner parts and the legs with water and burned the whole ram on the altar as a burnt offering, a pleasing aroma, an offering made to the LORD by fire, as the LORD commanded Moses. He then presented the other ram, the ram for the ordination, and Aaron and his sons laid their hands on its head. Moses slaughtered the ram and took some of its blood and put it on the lobe of Aarons right ear, on the thumb of his right hand and on the big toe of his right foot. Moses also brought Aarons sons forward and put some of the blood on the lobes of their right ears, on the thumbs of their right hands and on the big toes of their right feet. Then he sprinkled blood against the altar on all sides. * Leviticus 7:2-3 - The LORD said to Moses, Say to the Israelites: Anyone who brings a fellowship offering to the LORD is to bring part of it as his sacrifice to the LORD. With his own hands he is to bring the offering made to the LORD by fire; he is to bring the fat, together with the breast, and wave the breast before the LORD as a wave offering. The priest shall burn the fat on the altar, but the breast belongs to Aaron and his sons. You are to give the right thigh of your fellowship offerings to the priest as a contribution. The son of Aaron who offers the blood and the fat of the fellowship offering shall have the right thigh as his share. From the fellowship offerings of the Israelites, I have taken the breast that is waved and the thigh that is presented and have given them to Aaron the priest and his sons as their regular share from the Israelites. Killing, Torturing Non-Believers * Deuteronomy 7:2- - If a man or woman living among you in one of the towns the LORD gives you is found doing evil in the eyes of the LORD your God in violation of his covenant, and contrary to my command has worshiped other gods, bowing down to them or to the sun or the moon or the stars of the sky, and this has been brought to your attention, then you must investigate it thoroughly. If it is true and it has been proved that this detestable thing has been done in Israel, take the man or woman who has done this evil deed to your city gate and stone that person to death.

* Deuteronomy 7:2 - Anyone arrogant enough to reject the verdict of the judge or of the priest who represents the Lord your God must die. In this way you will purge the evil from Israel. * 2 Chronicles :2-3 - They entered into a covenant to seek the LORD, the God of their fathers, with all their heart and soul. All who would not seek the LORD, the God of Israel, were to be put to death, whether small or great, man or woman. * Deuteronomy 3:2- - If you hear it said about one of the towns the LORD your God is giving you to live in that wicked men have arisen among you and have led the people of their town astray, saying, Let us go and worship other gods (gods you have not known), then you must inquire, probe and investigate it thoroughly. And if it is true and it has been proved that this detestable thing has been done among you, you must certainly put to the sword all who live in that town. Destroy it completely, both its people and its livestock. Gather all the plunder of the town into the middle of the public square and completely burn the town and all its plunder as a whole burnt offering to the LORD your God. It is to remain a ruin forever, never to be rebuilt. None of those condemned things shall be found in your hands, so that the LORD will turn from his fierce anger; he will show you mercy, have compassion on you, and increase your numbers, as he promised on oath to your forefathers, because you obey the LORD your God, keeping all his commands that I am giving you today and doing what is right in his eyes. * Deuteronomy 3:- - If your very own brother, or your son or daughter, or the wife you love, or your closest friend secretly entices you, saying, Let us go and worship other gods (gods that neither you nor your fathers have known, gods of the peoples around you, whether near or far, from one end of the land to the other), do not yield to him or listen to him. Show him no pity. Do not spare him or shield him. You must certainly put him to death. Your hand must be the first in putting him to death, and then the hands of all the people. Stone him to death, because he tried to turn you away from the LORD your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery. Then all Israel will hear and be afraid, and no one among you will do such an evil thing again. * Leviticus 2:3- - Then the LORD said to Moses: Take
00

the blasphemer outside the camp. All those who heard him are to lay their hands on his head, and the entire assembly is to stone him. Say to the Israelites: If anyone curses his God, he will be held responsible; anyone who blasphemes the name of the LORD must be put to death. The entire assembly must stone him. Whether an alien or native-born, when he blasphemes the Name, he must be put to death. * Exodus 22:20 - Whoever sacrifices to any god other than the LORD must be destroyed. * Corinthians :22 - If anyone does not love the Lorda curse be on him. * Mark :- - Later Jesus appeared to the Eleven as they were eating; he rebuked them for their lack of faith and their stubborn refusal to believe those who had seen him after he had risen. He said to them, Go into all the world and preach the good news to all creation. Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned. * Revelation 9:1-6 - The fifth angel sounded his trumpet, and I saw a star that had fallen from the sky to the earth. The star was given the key to the shaft of the Abyss. When he opened the Abyss, smoke rose from it like the smoke from a gigantic furnace. The sun and sky were darkened by the smoke from the Abyss. And out of the smoke locusts came down upon the earth and were given power like that of scorpions of the earth. They were told not to harm the grass of the earth or any plant or tree, but only those people who did not have the seal of God on their foreheads. They were not given power to kill them, but only to torture them for five months. And the agony they suffered was like that of the sting of a scorpion when it strikes a man. During those days men will seek death, but will not find it; they will long to die, but death will elude them. * . Revelation 2:- - Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and there was no longer any sea. I saw the Holy City, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride beautifully dressed for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, Now the dwelling of God is with men, and he will live with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God. He will wipe every
0

tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away. He who was seated on the throne said, I am making everything new! Then he said, Write this down, for these words are trustworthy and true. He said to me: It is done. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End. To him who is thirsty I will give to drink without cost from the spring of the water of life. He who overcomes will inherit all this, and I will be his God and he will be my son. But the cowardly, the unbelieving, the vile, the murderers, the sexually immoral, those who practice magic arts, the idolaters and all liarstheir place will be in the fiery lake of burning sulfur. This is the second death. Disgusting * Samuel :2-27 - Saul replied, Say to David, The king wants no other price for the bride than a hundred Philistine foreskins, to take revenge on his enemies. Sauls plan was to have David fall by the hands of the Philistines. When the attendants told David these things, he was pleased to become the kings son-in-law. So before the allotted time elapsed, David and his men went out and killed two hundred Philistines. He brought their foreskins and presented the full number to the king so that he might become the kings son-in-law. Then Saul gave him his daughter Michal in marriage. * Ezekiel 23:11-21 - Her sister Oholibah saw this, yet in her lust and prostitution she was more depraved than her sister. She too lusted after the Assyriansgovernors and commanders, warriors in full dress, mounted horsemen, all handsome young men. I saw that she too defiled herself; both of them went the same way. But she carried her prostitution still further. She saw men portrayed on a wall, figures of Chaldeans a portrayed in red, with belts around their waists and flowing turbans on their heads; all of them looked like Babylonian chariot officers, natives of Chaldea. b As soon as she saw them, she lusted after them and sent messengers to them in Chaldea. Then the Babylonians came to her, to the bed of love, and in their lust they defiled her. After she had been defiled by them, she turned away from them in disgust. When she carried on her prostitution openly and exposed
02

her nakedness, I turned away from her in disgust, just as I had turned away from her sister. Yet she became more and more promiscuous as she recalled the days of her youth, when she was a prostitute in Egypt. There she lusted after her lovers, whose genitals were like those of donkeys and whose emission was like that of horses. So you longed for the lewdness of your youth, when in Egypt your bosom was caressed and your young breasts fondled. * Judges 3:-23 - Again the Israelites cried out to the LORD, and he gave them a delivererEhud, a left-handed man, the son of Gera the Benjamite. The Israelites sent him with tribute to Eglon king of Moab. Now Ehud had made a double-edged sword about a foot and a half long, which he strapped to his right thigh under his clothing. He presented the tribute to Eglon king of Moab, who was a very fat man. After Ehud had presented the tribute, he sent on their way the men who had carried it. At the idols near Gilgal he himself turned back and said, I have a secret message for you, O king. The king said, Quiet! And all his attendants left him. Ehud then approached him while he was sitting alone in the upper room of his summer palace and said, I have a message from God for you. As the king rose from his seat, Ehud reached with his left hand, drew the sword from his right thigh and plunged it into the kings belly. Even the handle sank in after the blade, which came out his back. Ehud did not pull the sword out, and the fat closed in over it. Then Ehud went out to the porch ; he shut the doors of the upper room behind him and locked them. * Judges 4:21 - But Jael, Hebers wife, picked up a tent peg and a hammer and went quietly to him while he lay fast asleep, exhausted. She drove the peg through his temple into the ground, and he died. * Psalm :0 - The righteous will be glad when they are avenged, when they bathe their feet in the blood of the wicked. * Genesis :30-3 - Lot and his two daughters left Zoar and settled in the mountains, for he was afraid to stay in Zoar. He and his two daughters lived in a cave. One day the older daughter said to the younger, Our father is old, and there is no man around here to lie with us, as is the custom all over the earth. Lets get our father to drink wine and then lie with him and preserve our
03

family line through our father. That night they got their father to drink wine, and the older daughter went in and lay with him. He was not aware of it when she lay down or when she got up. The next day the older daughter said to the younger, Last night I lay with my father. Lets get him to drink wine again tonight, and you go in and lie with him so we can preserve our family line through our father. So they got their father to drink wine that night also, and the younger daughter went and lay with him. Again he was not aware of it when she lay down or when she got up. So both of Lots daughters became pregnant by their father. * Judges :2-30 - But the men would not listen to him. So the man took his concubine and sent her outside to them, and they raped her and abused her throughout the night, and at dawn they let her go. At daybreak the woman went back to the house where her master was staying, fell down at the door and lay there until daylight. When her master got up in the morning and opened the door of the house and stepped out to continue on his way, there lay his concubine, fallen in the doorway of the house, with her hands on the threshold. He said to her, Get up; lets go. But there was no answer. Then the man put her on his donkey and set out for home. When he reached home, he took a knife and cut up his concubine, limb by limb, into twelve parts and sent them into all the areas of Israel. Everyone who saw it said, Such a thing has never been seen or done, not since the day the Israelites came up out of Egypt. Think about it! Consider it! Tell us what to do! * Joshua 0:22-2 - Joshua said, Open the mouth of the cave and bring those five kings out to me. So they brought the five kings out of the cavethe kings of Jerusalem, Hebron, Jarmuth, Lachish and Eglon. When they had brought these kings to Joshua, he summoned all the men of Israel and said to the army commanders who had come with him, Come here and put your feet on the necks of these kings. So they came forward and placed their feet on their necks. Joshua said to them, Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged. Be strong and courageous. This is what the LORD will do to all the enemies you are going to fight. Then Joshua struck and killed the kings and hung them on five trees, and they were left hanging on the trees until evening. * Matthew :2-30 - If your right eye causes you to sin, gouge it out and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of
0

your body than for your whole body to be thrown into hell. And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to go into hell. * 2 Chronicles 21:18-19 - After all this, the LORD afflicted Jehoram with an incurable disease of the bowels. In the course of time, at the end of the second year, his bowels came out because of the disease, and he died in great pain. His people made no fire in his honor, as they had for his fathers. * 2 Kings :33-3 - Throw her down! Jehu said. So they threw her down, and some of her blood spattered the wall and the horses as they trampled her underfoot. Jehu went in and ate and drank. Take care of that cursed woman, he said, and bury her, for she was a kings daughter. But when they went out to bury her, they found nothing except her skull, her feet and her hands. * Numbers 2:- - While Israel was staying in Shittim, the men began to indulge in sexual immorality with Moabite women, who invited them to the sacrifices to their gods. The people ate and bowed down before these gods. So Israel joined in worshiping the Baal of Peor. And the LORDs anger burned against them. The LORD said to Moses, Take all the leaders of these people, kill them and expose them in broad daylight before the LORD, so that the LORDs fierce anger may turn away from Israel. So Moses said to Israels judges, Each of you must put to death those of your men who have joined in worshiping the Baal of Peor. Then an Israelite man brought to his family a Midianite woman right before the eyes of Moses and the whole assembly of Israel while they were weeping at the entrance to the Tent of Meeting. When Phinehas son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron, the priest, saw this, he left the assembly, took a spear in his hand and followed the Israelite into the tent. He drove the spear through both of themthrough the Israelite and into the womans body. Then the plague against the Israelites was stopped; but those who died in the plague numbered 2,000. * Judges :- - Inside the city, however, was a strong tower, to which all the men and womenall the people of the cityfled. They locked themselves in and climbed up on the tower roof. Abimelech went to the tower and stormed it. But as he approached the entrance to the tower to set it on fire, a woman
0

dropped an upper millstone on his head and cracked his skull. Hurriedly he called to his armor-bearer, Draw your sword and kill me, so that they cant say, A woman killed him. So his servant ran him through, and he died. * Psalms 37:- - O Daughter of Babylon, doomed to destruction, happy is he who repays you for what you have done to us he who seizes your infants and dashes them against the rocks. * Genesis 3:-0 - Then Judah said to Onan, Lie with your brothers wife and fulfill your duty to her as a brother-in-law to produce offspring for your brother. But Onan knew that the offspring would not be his; so whenever he lay with his brothers wife, he spilled his semen on the ground to keep from producing offspring for his brother. What he did was wicked in the LORDs sight; so he put him to death also.
